ATTENTION DOG OWNERS ACMP has received complaints concerning people walking their dogs in the park and letting them do their “business.” By law you are supposed to clean up after your pet. Pet owners should have respect for our park and the others who wish to use this park. This is not a dog park, this area is for residents to enjoy. Please keep your dogs out of the park. ACC requests Friends, we respectfully request that you submit an ACC request to the Westminster Village HOA, Inc, for changes to your yard or home. Things like sheds and back yard patios, visible from the street, require prior approval from the ACC committee. Changes to your yard, including even minor landscaping, rocks and bushe,s require approval from the Home Owner Association. The rule of thumb is you can’t make any changes to your yard or home that are visible from the street without prior approval. Please help keep expenses down by first getting permission to make changes instead of the HOA having to mail you a deed restriction letter.

Residents Bee-wary, Bee-safe This Summer As summer approaches, we want to remind residents that as weather warms bee infestation can be a problem for property residents. Bee and wasp colonies can be a hazard to homes and neighbors, especially those with small children or the elderly. Homeowners that see bees coming and going likely have a colony, which will continue to grow if not removed. The larger the colony, the likelihood for danger increases. Moreover, greater expense can be incurred for removal and potential liability to homeowners. Inspect Your Property • Listen for buzzing and look for bees entering or leaving the same area indicating a nest or swarm of bees. • Examine work areas prior to using noisy power equipment such as lawn mowers, weed cutters and chain saws. • Examine areas for bees before tying up or penning pets. • Never disturb a swarm or colony of bees - contact a bee removal service or pest control company. • Teach children to be cautious around and respectful to, all bees. • If you know you are allergic to bee stings, check with your doctor about a sting kit. Bee-proof your property • Inspect outside walls and eves of your house and other buildings. • Seal openings greater than one-eighth inch in diameter (1/8-inch) in walls, around chimneys, masonry, pluming and any other openings. • Install screens (1/8-inch hardware cloth) over rain spouts, vents, cavities of trees and fence posts, water meter, utility boxes, etc. • From spring through fall, inspect 1-2 times per week for bee activity around your house and yard. What to do if you discover a bee infestation • Do not disturb a swarm or colony. • Bees should not be allowed to live in a house or other structure. The longer a colony lives in a structure the more defensive they will become and the more costly removal and repair will become. • Call a professional bee removal service or pest control operator. Potential Bee nesting sites Bees will choose a nesting site in many places where people may disturb them. Nesting cavities may include: buckets, cans, empty boxes, old tires or any container ranging in volume from as little as 2 to 10 gallons and more. Bees will also choose infrequently used vehicles, lumber piles, holes and cavities in fences, trees, even in the ground, in sheds, garages and other outbuildings between walls or in the open, low decks or spaces under buildings. Like all living organisms, honey bees need water for hydration. This becomes especially evident during hot dry weather when natural sources dry up and bees begin to collect water from sources close to people and domestic animals. We all want to help bees survive, but sometimes that’s just not practical, especially when children are competing with bees for water. Bees will collect water whereever it can be found. It could be from a dirty puddle, a pond, a brook, your swimming pool, irrigation system, birdbath, dripping outdoor faucet...etc. Tips on keeping bees away from pools: When you first notice bees around your pool, spray them with a soap-water solution.

Soap-water solution: Mix 1 part dish soap to 4 parts water in spray bottle. Spray all bees around your pool with this solution. The soap-water solution will kill the bees, but doesn’t leave a harmful residue like an insecticide. Spray every bee until no bees return for at least one day. This will kill those water foragers telling others in the colony where your swimming pool is located. Eventually, you will kill all those bees foraging at your pool and prevent them from telling others about your pool. Other water foragers will find a different source of water, so don’t worry. It’s unlikely your pool is the only source of water within foraging distance. In reality, you’re only eliminating a very small proportion of the foraging population and an even smaller proportion of the total colony population. Pet water and birdbaths: 1 part vinegar to 256 parts water (2 tablespoons vinegar to 1 gallon water). celebrate mother’s day - give her what she really wants! What does mom really want for Mother’s Day? The results of recent surveys offer some indication. Here are some factoids, tips and survey data points to help guide the search for last-minute Mother’s Day gifts: Been procrastinating? You’re not alone. As of May 1st, more than half of the consumers in one survey said they hadn’t purchased a gift yet. Most people will spend under $100. A survey from PriceGrabber indicates that 62% of consumers plan on dropping under $100 on Mother’s Day presents. Some consumers plan on kissing up to Mom more than others: 8% say they’ll spend over $250. There are free things you can “give” Mom. Many stores and restaurants offer freebies and specials on Mother’s Day: Some businesses dish out free frozen yogurts to moms on Sunday, movie rentals may allowing customers to send one free night’s rental to moms (and anyone who has a mom) via Facebook and there may be stores giving moms a free breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes and coffee before 11 AM. Everybody can at least pick up the phone, right? Roughly 20% of men admit to having forgotten about Mother’s Day, compared to just 8% of women, according to a survey conducted for RetailMeNot. This makes guys look bad, but women have an obvious advantage to help them remember the holiday - many of them are mothers, after all. Sons are more likely to give mom what she really wants. In another survey, the most popular gift selected by moms was to be taken out for a meal - preferred by 34% of mothers, compared to 10% who’d like jewelry. While 26% of sons say they’re likely to take mom out for brunch, dinner or another meal on Mother’s Day, just 20% of daughters will do so. Men drop more money on Mother’s Day too. According to the National Retail Federation, men will spend an average of $189.74 to celebrate Mother’s Day, while women can be expected to drop $117.42, on average. About two-thirds of survey respondents who plan on giving Mother’s Day gifts will hand over flowers, the most popular gift item. Paying off mom’s bills may be the best gift of all. The top financial wish of mothers with kids living at home is that they could get out of debt. So, in theory, paying off your mother’s credit card balance - or at least maybe $189.74 of it - would make her dreams come true. Something tells me many moms wouldn’t exactly appreciate the gesture, though.

While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
White chicken enchiladas
slightly adapted from mommas kitchen 8 flour tortillas 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken (I used half of a rotisserie chicken) 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese 3 Tbsp butter 3 Tbsp flour 2 cups chicken broth 1 cup sour cream 1 (4 oz) can diced green chilies Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9x13 pan with cooking spray. Mix chicken and 1 cup cheese. Roll up in tortillas and place in pan seam side down. In a small sauce pan over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook 1 minute. Add broth and whisk until smooth. Allow sauce to thicken. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream and chilies. Pour sauce over enchiladas and top with remaining cheese. Bake 20-25 minutes and then broil for a few minutes to brown the cheese.

Our Scout Troop participates in the local council activities and has a campout each month at locations that the boys pick. Each summer we send a group of boys on a High Adventure Trek and or a group of boys to a summer camp. We would like to invite you and your scouter to join the Boy Scouts of America. Houston Family Arts Center Actors Academy Announces 2013 Summer Camps Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces their 2013 Summer Performing Arts Camps. This summer, the HFAC’s Actors Academy is offering 25 different 1 and 3-week performing arts camps for grades 1-12. HFAC camps run June 10 through August 24, 2013 and feature acting, singing and dance instruction, as well as performance opportunities in musicals, dramas and comedies - especially designed for kids and teens.

The HFAC Actors Academy 3-week Musical Theatre Performance Camps for grades 1-6 and 4-8 are Honk, Jr, The Hobbit, Pinocchio and Once on this Island, Jr. HFAC is offering eleven 1-week camps for grades 1-6 that include “Clowning Around,” “Acting Up Improv,” “Imagination Theatre,” “Disney Magic,” “Lights of Broadway,” “American Idol Boot Camp,” “Triple Threat,” “Fractured Fairy Tales,” “Dancing through the Decades,” “Melodrama Madness” and “Glee.” HFAC has numerous performance opportunities for teens in grades 7-12. The teen 3-week performance camps are Shake speare’s Taming of the Shrew and Once on this Island. The 1-week camps for teens are “Stage Combat,” “Acting for Stage and Film,” “Dialects,” “Triple Threat Boot Camp” and “Shakespeare Intensive.” A new addition to the HFAC summer program for teens is the audition show Steel Magnolias. This show rehearses Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings beginning July 16th. Performances for Steel Magnolias will be the last week of Aug. Dance classes will also be offered this summer. There will be eight ballet 1, ballet 2, pointe, jazz 2 and tap 2 classes taught Tuesday evenings, June 11th-Aug 6th. The HFAC Royal Academy of Dance program is offering an Alice in Wonderland Ballet Camp that meets Monday and Wednesday evenings, July 22nd-August 24th. New this summer is a 2-week lighting and sound engineering camp for teens who want to learn how to provide technical support for musicals, comedies and dramas. The HFAC Summer 2013 line-up offers maximum scheduling flexibility at rates that are lower than anywhere in Houston. The average performing arts camp in Houston costs in excess of $11 per hour. HFAC camp tuition ranges from $5.23-$5.57 per hour before discounts. The 3-week camps are $575 or $5.23/hr and the 1-week camps are $195 or $5.57 per hour. HFAC offers multiple camp discounts and beforeand-after care for working parents.

ACL started in February 2010 with members from area private and public middle schools that feed into the two primary high schools in the Memorial area. Our 160 members (7th and 8th grade boys and their Moms) performed 1300+ hours of community service and had a ball! We work with charities that the boys introduced to the League and have developed long-term, in-depth relationships with them so we can continue to interact with our approved Charities in a very meaningful way. ACL currently has 800+ members in the Memorial, Katy, Tomball/The Woodlands, Copperfield and San Antonio Chapters.

GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY • Last chance to prune and fertilize azaleas. Keep mulch several inches thick at all times. Fertilize camellias lightly for second time. • Fertilize crepe myrtles monthly from spring through summer with a high phosphorous fertilizer for bloom. If iron deficiencies appear (yellow leaves) use Green Light Iron and soil Acidifier according to label directions. • This is the time of year for aphids and mildew. Each problem has many solutions, but to handle both at once you can use either Orthenex Insect & Disease Control Formula III or just plain soapy water (Liquid Ivory 1 tsp. - 1 Tbsp. for insects and 4 tsp. baking soda for fungus in every gallon of water. Keep solution mixed and apply to upper and lower sides of the leaves. Rinse with clear water 3 to 4 hours later. Frequency caution should be used.
Adoptable Dog of the Month Lily is still looking for her very own family. You may recognize her from last month’s newsletter. Won’t you consider opening up your home and heart to this beauty? Lily, a German Shepherd mix, was surrendered to BARC, the Houston city shelter, because her owners had “two many.” She was very thin, had just had a litter of pups and was high heartworm positive and was going to be euthanized at the shelter. Her owners kept the puppies, but dumped poor ol’ mom at the shelter to die. She has filled out beautifully and been treated for the heartworms. She is now ready to find a home of her own. Lily loves people and loves attention. Her favorite way of showing her love is to hug you and give you a kiss or two or three! Everyone that meets her loves her. She is probably too interested in cats and even though she is learning about cats, life would probably be simpler if she went to to a home without cats and very small dogs. Lily is a very smart dog, which is helpful with training, but she is so smart she can open gates and needs a secure backyard with a locked gate and tall fence. She is very loving and likes spending time with her people. People with Shepherd experience will probably understand her needs more than those who have not known Shepherds. She is close to 60 lbs., could probably still stand to gain another 5 lbs., she is up-to-date on her vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. She is crate trained and is most likely housebroken. She is looking to join a family and she will be very loyal to her person or family. Seems to be fine with children, older children would probably be best.
