The third Sunday in June is Dad’s time in the sun. And contrary to what some cynics contend, this holiday was not the invention of a greeting card company - commercial greeting cards as we know them didn’t even exist when Sonora Smart Dodd thought up Father’s Day in 1909. Father’s Day was the brainchild of Sonora Smart Dodd, whose mother had died giving birth to her. At a time when many widowed men sent their offspring to live with relatives, Sonora’s father reared her and her five siblings alone on a farm in eastern Washington. In 1909, grown and married, Sonora was in church listening to a Mother’s Day sermon when the thought struck her that fathers deserved credit too, especially hers. Through her efforts, Spokane, Washington held the first Father’s Day observance the following year. By 1924, the custom had spread through the country and Calvin Coolidge made the first presidential proclamation in support of Father’s Day. Nearly 60 years later, President Richard Nixon made it permanent in 1972, when he requested that Congress pass a joint resolution making the third Sunday in June a National Day of Observance in honor of fathers everywhere.

We all know that eating right and exercising are important for our families; however, many times we don’t know where to start. Going into a grocery store, parents are faced with a variety of products that claim to be healthy but in actuality may not be the best option. Additionally, finding time to exercise may be hard for a family’s busy schedule and even when we find the time, knowing what the best workout will be is difficult.

Stretches should be held for 10 to 30 seconds. Remember to breath and do not bounce with the stretch. We also suggest that you stretch opposite muscles equally to promote improved strength overall. For instance, in addition to stretching the right and left quadriceps (the front thigh muscle) you should also stretch the right and left hamstrings. The sooner that a stretch program can be started the better the outcome.
Brian Scully, a pediatric physical therapist and Lauren Scott, a pediatric clinical dietician, both with Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus help answer some of the most common questions we’ve received about exercising and nutrition. Is stretching really important? Yes! Stretching is a fantastic tool to help with the growth and development phase that all young people go through. When the growth plates are wide open, the bones grow longer and at a faster pace than the corresponding muscles; therefore, the muscles need the added stretching to help them keep up with the bone development. The growth of bones and muscles go hand-in-hand. If muscle growth is ignored, there is an increased chance of injury. Stretching also helps improve flexibility, relaxes and lengthens the muscles and can help in sports coordination as well. One important note is that stretching is most advantageous after a light warm up. You should never stretch “cold” muscles as it increases the risk for injury.

What are some of the best exercises for children and adolescents? Any type of physical activity is great. The more time children can spend exercising, playing outside or participating in sports will help to promote a healthier lifestyle. That being said, there are a number of activities children and young adults can engage in that can help in other areas as well. For instance, taking a walk outside can provide an opportunity for the family to do something together and allows everyone to take advantage of an important source of vitamin D. Another great example is playing ball (any type). This not only gets kids moving but can help improve their coordination and motor skills as well. How can I limit my child’s sugar and caloric intake? Many parents are surprised to learn how much sugar is in juice. While you can replace one serving of whole fruit with 6 to 8 ounces of 100 percent fruit juice, we recommend limiting your child to one serving of juice per day as a single serving can have 20 grams of sugar or more. Juice also digests very quickly, lacking any sort of satiety and possibly contributing to excess calories at the end of the day. The best alternative is to eat the fruit as opposed to drinking the juice. Not only will it help limit the amount of calories and added sugar your child takes in, but eating the fruit provides fiber as well to help keep your child full and energized until their next meal. Should my child be taking a multi-vitamin? A balanced diet is essential for all children and young adults. For the most

part, children and adolescents get the necessary vitamins and minerals directly from the food their eating and for these children supplements are not necessary. Vitamins and multivitamins can be recommended, but this usually happens on an individual basis. If a multivitamin is suggested for a child, for example a picky eater who isn’t getting the necessary levels of vitamins and nutrients, parents should enforce the fact that vitamins are not candy to avoid overconsumption and vitamin toxicity. Vitamin supplements can start as young as infancy depending on the situation. For example, iron supplementation is recommended after two weeks of life for low birth weight and premature infants receiving breast milk. By 6 months of age, most babies should be incorporating iron fortified foods into their diet. However, some breastfed babies with insufficient intake may require supplementation. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends breastfed infants should have a minimum intake of 400 international units of supplemental Vitamin D per day, within the first days of life. Beyond the age of 1, the hope is that most children maintain a well-balanced diet and do not necessarily need vitamin supplementation. Although, for various reasons, vitamin supplements may be recommended and should be done so under the supervision of a doctor or dietitian.

PICK UP YOUR DOG’S WASTE
When walking your dog, please do not allow them to walk in people’s yards. In the event your dog does wander onto someone’s property and uses the bathroom please pick up all of the waste. A single gram (about the size of a dime) of dog feces contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria. Dog feces may harbor dangerous bacteria and viruses such as: whipworms, roundworms, tapeworms, parvo, giardiasis, salmonellosis and cryptosporidiosis.

Pet waste is not fertilizer. It actually kills plants and grasses. Improperly disposed of or left unchecked, dog waste pollutes our environment and can even filter into our water supply. Uncollected dog waste that washes into streams and storm drains is the #3 contributor to water contamination. Pick up your dog’s waste. Not only will it help the environment, but it will ensure you and your dog a clean and safe area to enjoy together!
Parking in the Street
Did you know it is against Cinco Ranch Covenants for residents to park in the street (Article XII, Section 2(a))? Additionally, when a number of vehicles park in the street, emergency vehicles have a difficult task maneuvering down the street. Due to the size and clearance needs of these emergency vehicles, a street lined with parked cars obstructs the passage and delays response time. While it is understood that during certain events, vehicles parking on the street is an unavoidable circumstance, please be aware of clearance needed for traffic. Ask your guests to park their car as close to curb as possible and not line both sides of the street. Be a courteous neighbor by communicating you are having a gathering at your home and may need additional parking. Ask if they would mind guests parking in front of their homes to help eliminate the congestion on the street. Remember, parking on the street for residents is prohibited and can impact the ability of emergency services to reach you or a neighbor in an emergency. Your cooperation will ensure Cinco Ranch retains its reputation as the premiere area to live in.

Cinco Ranch Lost and Found Pets Networking Volunteers & Short-term Fosters Needed
With over 8,700 homes in Cinco Ranch, we need volunteers from each “neighborhood” to receive email blasts for lost and found pets in our community. Would you be willing to receive occasional emails when there is a lost or found pet in your area? We need additional caring, animal-friendly neighbors to help us network to get them back home quickly. If you would like to help reunite lost and found pets with their grateful families, please send your name and contact information to our volunteer coordinator at paigh618@hotmail.com **Also, please get a registered microchip implant for your pets through your vet and make sure they have on collars and tags with contact information to quickly get them back home safely. If you find a lost pet, always contact us FIRST by email at: LostAndFound@CincoRanchLife.org, so we can help with securing a place for a short term foster until the owner is located or they are placed into rescue.
Street Parking Near the Schools
Did you know that each area of Cinco Ranch has Neighborhood Representative Committee (NRC) Representatives positions? While not every position is filled (we’re looking for volunteers who want to get involved!), most have an NRC rep and many have 1st and 2nd alternate reps. These are volunteers from your neighborhood. Your NRC rep is a tremendous source of information and a resource you should use. But, you have to know who
With the Katy ISD bus changes this year, many parents are dropping off and picking up their children at school. This means there are many more cars parked along the streets near the schools. Please be extra cautious in these areas and be alert to the parked cars and the children walking to and from the cars. Thank you.

Help Keep Our Lights On
Cinco Ranch Residents pay a maintenance fee where a large portion includes the electricity to light our streets. Each streetlight costs the Cinco Ranch Associations approximately $30 dollars a month. This fee is billed to us whether the light is working or not. If you see a light(s) burned out, please help us by getting the number on the pole. You may submit the work order to Centerpoint Energy or report it to the Associations Office. To report the outage yourself you will either fill out the form available at: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage or you can call the information into Centerpoint Energy at 713Â-207-2222. The electronic form is much faster as you won’t be put on “hold.â€? You can also report dim lights, leaning poles, etc. on the electronic form. Copy the email to the Cinco Ranch Residential Office at: CincoRanchCustomerCare@pcmi-Âus.com so we can keep the list of lights reported. Thank you for your help in this matter. PET LEASH LAWS IN THE CINCO RANCH AREA Harris County - LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances:

When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. Ft. Bend County - LEASH LAW
Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Fort Bend County Animal Control - 1210 Blume Road - Rosenberg, TX 77471 - 281-342-1512 - AnimalServices@co.fort-bend.tx.us

Do you have a transformer in your yard? If you do, please do not directly surround it with mulch or dirt. Transformers must have the sides exposed so they can cool properly. Otherwise they will over heat and burn out. Also, the sides of a transformer can rust through due to mulch holding moisture against them. Please do your part and clear the area around transformers in your yard.

DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!
Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake.

It only takes a few minutes to inform local police that you are away from home. Take measures to secure your home and cars. Let your neighbors know that you will be away and when you plan to return. Inform neighbors and law enforcement if you plan on having maintenance services stop by while you are on vacation. It is advised that you have newspapers stopped, mail held and any advertisement left on your property picked up by someone. Cinco Ranch Residents Do You Have This Phone Number in Your Cell Phone?
Two phone numbers suggested you save in your cell phone are the nonemergency Harris County Precinct 5 Constables and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s numbers. 911 should always be used in case of an emergency, but many times we need to contact the Sheriff’s department and need to do so quickly. Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff’s department if something in your neighborhood seems questionable. This will give our contract deputies probable cause to investigate. This would include suspicious vehicles (vehicles exhibiting unsafe or erratic driving behavior), suspicious persons or behavior, activity at you neighbors home when you know they are on vacation and anything else that may be out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. Don’t take a chance on you or your family’s safety. Harris County Precinct 5 Constables 281-463-6666 Fort Bend County Sheriff 281-341-4665

The Neighborhood Representative Committee is requesting residents to submit their contact information to their neighborhood rep. Your email is the best form of communication amongst the neighborhoods. Each representative will collect a listing for their neighborhoods to help with community communication. This information will be used for community awareness only. The NRC meets every month on the third Monday at 7 PM. Meetings are held at the Association Office located at 3022 Windemere Park Lane. PROTECT STORM DRAINS
Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of $5,000 for each offense. PLEASE CALL 281-398-8211 TO REPORT OFFENDERS.
Cinco MUD 8 says Spruce Up Your Sprinkler System and Save
It’s been a long, hard winter for your yard. While your plants go dormant to cope with the colder weather, your sprinkler system can feel the effects of winter, too. Cracks in the pipes can lead to costly leaks and broken sprinkler heads can waste water and money. You could be losing up to 25,000 gallons of water and more than $90 over a six-month irrigation season - the cost of about 300 daffodil bulbs! Now is the perfect time to spruce up your irrigation system before you ramp up your watering efforts this spring and summer. To get started, follow these four simple steps - inspect, connect, direct and select:

21218 Kingsland Blvd., Katy, Texas 77450 • Inspect. Check your system for clogged, broken or missing sprinkler heads. If you’re not the do-it-yourself type, go with a pro - look for an irrigation professional certified through a WaterSense labeled irrigation program. • Connect. Examine points where the sprinkler heads connect to pipes/ hoses. If water is pooling in your landscape or you have large wet areas, you could have a leak in your system. A leak as small as the tip of a ballpoint pen (1/32nd of an inch) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month. • Direct. Are you watering the driveway, house or sidewalk instead of your yard? Redirect sprinklers to apply water only to your lawn or prized plants. • Select. An improperly scheduled irrigation controller can waste a lot of water and money. Update your system’s schedule with the seasons or select a WaterSense labeled controller to take the guesswork out of scheduling. Don’t forget to add “sprinkler spruce-up” to your spring cleaning list this year. Learn more about maintaining a water-smart yard by visiting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense website at www.epa.gov/ watersense/outdoor See www.cincomud8.com/documents.html for REBATE information.
Greater Houston Pool Management, Inc.
The Greater Houston Pool Management, Inc. Team would like to welcome you to the 2013 swim season. We sincerely look forward to serving you and your guests throughout this summer! GHPMI was founded on three guiding principles: safety, customer service and cleanliness. With safety as our # 1 priority, we spend a great deal of our time and resources making sure that every GHPMI employee that enters your swimming facility has the appropriate tools and training to be proactive in their efforts to avoid problems and effective during an emergency situation. We also feel that it is important that when any community member visits the swimming pool for an outing, they are greeted by a smiling, friendly and professional lifeguard staff. The overall cleanliness of your facility is just as important to our team. Clear and properly-maintained pool water, pleasantsmelling bathrooms that are cleaned and stocked daily and a debris-free pool deck are what you should expect when visiting your facility. Please take

the time to introduce yourself to your lifeguard team this summer! We truly enjoy getting to know the members we so proudly serve. Our whole team is working hard to hire and train Lifeguards and Pool Managers, ordering pool chemicals and supplies and hiring the support staff that will enable your facilities to run well during the summer. This is an excellent opportunity for all the young adults who live in the Cinco Ranch community! We are always looking for hard working individuals within the community to fulfill our summer staff needs. We are also actively hiring swim instructors that are looking to have a positive, exciting and skill-building job this summer. They learn important skills such as job responsibility, risk management, customer service and key leadership skills. Opportunities are also available to any adult (especially teachers!) that may also be looking for a rewarding summer job. Applications for employment can be found on our employment website, www.BeALifeguard.com The GHPMI Programs Department is excited to offer your community programs that will help enhance your family’s summer experience. GHPMI provides a variety of programs, such as: group and private learn to swim classes, Guard Start, water aerobics, pool parties and more. For a detailed list of what is available at your facility, please visit us at www.takeaswimlesson. com for classes and www.haveapoolparty.com for pool parties. If something is not currently offered at your facility, please let us know of your interest. We make every effort to accommodate all requests. We want your visit to the pool to be a safe and positive experience. We pride ourselves in maintaining excellent communication between our team and the community members. Year-in and year-out, we receive many compliments on our proactive approach. We believe you will agree that GHPMI goes to great lengths to see to it that we stay ahead of all potential situations. We are pleased to provide an on-call person, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year that can take care of any emergency that may arise. Residents may also contact us through our website, www.greaterhoustonpool. com to take advantage of a variety of services including anonymous contact forms, details about their child’s summer job, online registration for community CPR or First Aid classes, babysitting courses, as well as company news and highlights.

Finally, please allow us to start the swim season off on a positive note by offering some valuable safety reminders. With your support we are confident that the 2013 swim season will be a safe and fun experience for all. • Parents must closely supervise their children at all times. Remember, it only takes seconds for a child to drown. • Remember that there are several different types of people who like to use the pool throughout the summer. Whether young or old, recreational or competitive, everyone wants to have a good time. • The safety of the children in the baby pool is the parents/guardians responsibility. The lifeguards will always enforce the pool rules throughout the facility, but children who cannot swim must have an adult within arms reach at all times. The same rule applies even if the child is wearing a floatation device. • Define a safe zone for your children where they can always touch the bottom. One of the most common saves a lifeguard must make is when a swimmer strays to an area that is too deep for them to stand. • Do not dive in areas marked “NO DIVING.” Nearly 90 percent of all spinal injuries occur in the shallow end of the pool. • Keep children from playing with or around the main drain. The main drain suction can be very powerful. • Breath-holding games can be very dangerous and may cause cardiac arrhythmia or seizures. Games like who can hold their breath the longest and swimming the longest distance underwater should be avoided at all times. • Access rules to the facility will be strictly enforced and is the responsibility of each member to understand and follow the rules as set forth by your Association. It is a very awkward and uncomfortable situation for everyone when a lifeguard must ask a member to go back home to get the appropriate access tag. If you should ever have a question about the pool rules, just ask a lifeguard or manager. It is better to be safe than sorry! We look forward to a safe, funfilled summer in 2013. Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
MR. SOLD
Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

Texas Christian School
Each year the four year olds through the eighth grade students at Texas Christian School become published authors! Students collaborated to write and illustrate their very own hardbound books. The students of Texas Christian School are celebrating the publication of their books in a big way. While writing their books, the students learned that hard work really does pays off and that writing is a lot of work. Students went through the entire process from first rough draft, many revisions and finally the publication process where they now own their very own book as the author. Texas Christian’s writing program is designed to motivate students to learn through publishing by enabling students to write, illustrate and publish full-color, hardbound books that they will enjoy for years. Texas Christian School is extremely proud of their student’s hard work and they look forward to many more books from their young authors.

Katy Rebels are TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS at Spring Madness Tourney in The Woodlands, TX
The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels - D’Addieco team continued their impressive start to the season with another 1st place finish in the March 30th Houston Premier Spring Madness tournament in The Woodlands, TX. After a shaky first half in the first game, the Rebels mounted a 14 point comeback in the second half and held on to win by 3 points. They won the championship against the host team by an impressive 22 points while battling foul trouble and physical play. Again, hustle and intensity, along with some clutch free throws, late game execution and a solid zone defense proved to be the difference. The team has demonstrated the ability to win gritty, close games, which should serve them well later in the season. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on another excellent tournament!

Church News
Living Word Lutheran ChurchBringing the Story of Palestine to the World
Bright Stars of Bethlehem was born out of the dream and vision of Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb. In 1995, Rev. Raheb began an outreach ministry in Bethlehem, Palestine from the congregation he serves, Christmas Lutheran Church. As this ministry grew, it attracted the attention of several supporters in the United States. In 2003, Bright Stars of Bethlehem was incorporated “to support the health, education, cultural and spiritual development of the people of the Middle East in order to promote peace and harmony in the region.” Today, Bright Stars of Bethlehem has an ever-increasing network of supporters in the U.S., which impacts the lives of over 60,000 men, women and children in Palestine. Born and raised in Bethlehem, Palestine, Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb serves as the President of Bright Stars of Bethlehem. In February of 2012, he was awarded the prestigious German Media Prize award and is an internationallyacclaimed author and speaker. Rev. Raheb has been featured on many major international media outlets and networks including CNN, ABC, BBC, ARD, ZDF, DW, BR, Premiere, Raiuno, Stern, The Economist and Newsweek. He was a key subject of an April 2012 CBS News “60 Minutes” segment on Palestinian Christians. Described as “the most widely published Palestinian theologian,” Rev. Raheb has authored more than 16 books. He is skilled in more than seven languages and participates in theological dialogue, peace building and dream making throughout the world. Living Word Lutheran Church is pleased to host Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb as a guest speaker during their worship services on Sunday, June 2nd at 8, 9:30 and 11 am. The Katy community is cordially invited to join us at this unique event. Living Word is located at 3700 S. Mason Road, Katy 77450.

Foxfinder by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder’, arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-4974904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org

Houston
June 2013
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.
The Cinco Spirit
There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.
The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.

The U.S. Department of State sponsors exchange programs that bring high school students from over 50 countries from all over the world in the United State for an academic year to live with an American host family, attend high school and learn about American society. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.
Fry Rd.
There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.

This would be perfect for someone who has time and a calling to help people or for students who are looking for community service and teaching experience. Even if you are new to art, you would have something to offer. Just give them what you know. That will be more than enough. (Paint mixing, pallets, brush choices, hand positions, perspective, shading, blending, etc.) All would be a great help to someone recovering from Aphasia. The times/days/number of students are all flexible. For more information, contact Stephanie Schmadeke, 713-628-9973 or to learn more about Aphasia, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphasia.
