June 2013 NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS Here’s the scoop on summer! It’s 10 o’clock. Do you know where your children are? It’s almost summer time and as we all know, kids will be kids. Summer sometimes results in boredom, which leads to mischief. We have many great families in NC, but we would still like to remind parents that it’s a good idea to keep tabs on your children at all times. Because what teen doesn’t love texts from his or her parents? Summer also means more kids in the streets, so we would like to remind drivers to SLOW DOWN when driving through the subdivision. You never know when a youngster will dart out into the street without looking. We have been fortunate not to have had any tragic accidents in recent years and knock wood, let’s keep it that way. Also, please roll up this newsletter and give your teen a friendly bonk on the head as you remind them not to text and drive. Summertime is also a good season for Garage Sales and we do permit them in NC as long as a homeowner does not have “perpetual” garage sales. One or two per year is enough. If you are holding a garage sale, please go back and take down and all of your signs after the sale is over. This keeps our neighborhood from looking junky. Signs are not allowed in NC, but we have taken a common sense approach about garage sales IF owners will be responsible about removal. So far this year, we seem to be getting ample rain. Due to the drought of 2011, we had many dead trees in our neighborhood. It appears that they have now been removed and we thank you for taking them down. I can assure you that the cost of tree removal is far more expensive than watering your trees on a regular basis. It makes sense to water your yards and plants at least weekly if the weather conditions dictate such action. You will definitely save money in the long run.

Summer is also the time of the year when the board receives emails about the replacement of common fences between neighbors’ yards. There are no rules or laws that govern this. Normally, the fence is built right on the property line of each homeowner. That means it’s owned by both neighbors. When the time comes to replace the fence, neighbors normally discuss it and agree to how it will be done. The practical approach is for each party to pay half of the cost and if one neighbor prefers a particular side of the fence, then that party pays an additional amount of the cost for the privilege of having the smooth side. Hopefully this information will help those of you who will be tackling this issue, and of course, we would encourage you to do so.

Oh, the places you’ll go Many of you were in attendance at the NCE School Carnival in April. After living here for 30 years, I am embarrassed to say this was my first time at the carnival. I was so impressed with the hundreds of parents and children who attended the event. It made me feel very proud to be part of such a great community. By the way, I was one of the guys grilling that great sausage! For those of you that may have some free time on your hands, this school is a great place to do some volunteer work. Pavilion in progress NCCIA is in the process of having another pavilion built in Rennie Park. If any homeowner has suggestions as to how we might be able to improve the park, please let us know by sending an email to the board. NCCIA IS SEEKING NEW DIRECTORS NCCIA is seeking two homeowners to serve as directors replacing Bruce Hamelin and Tom Brown. We sadly report that Tom passed away a few months ago. Bruce & Beverly Hamelin are moving out of the Houston area to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Both Bruce and Tom were instrumental in many positive ways in making NC a fine community. Bruce Hamelin served on the board for about 12 years and I am proud to have served with Bruce. Bruce was on the board back when there were major issues regarding NCCIA over 10 years ago. I cannot even begin to count the number of homeowners that Bruce counseled with regarding deed restriction issues, etc. There is no doubt that by him taking his personal time to speak to homeowners, he saved many folks a great

deal of money in past due penalties and legal fees. He was also instrumental in negotiating with our existing solid waste vendor along with some of the past vendors. Bruce took a leading role a few years ago when a real estate developer tried to build low-income housing near our community. His role in organizing the community was instrumental in the project being stopped. When Hurricane Ike came through and destroyed the fence along Westgreen, Bruce stepped up and negotiated with all of the homeowners on Abbotswood, which resulted in a nice new fence being built which fronts Westgreen. He and Beverly will truly be missed both as great neighbors and friends. We certainly wish them continued good health and much happiness in the future. So the time has come for someone else to step up and serve the community. We have a great board, at least in my opinion, but we are in need of two individuals to fill those open slots. Spring Yard of the Season - 2013 It is a wonderful time of the year to enjoy the beauty of Nottingham Country. We may be in for a dry season; however, right now, all is well here. The mature landscaping in our community, along with the busy gardeners and their spring planting continues to be a blessing to our community. If anyone is aware of shrubs or trees needing attention, please let us know and we will have the landscaping crew check on it as soon as possible. In some areas with the beautiful large oak trees it is not possible to have additional plants, so we are trying to have mulch distributed to enhance the area. We are asking the families living on cul-de-sacs and courts to PLEASE share the responsibility of turning on and off the sprinklers again this year. We can all help to keep it as green as possible. If the sprinkler system is not working properly, please let us know and we will have it repaired as soon as possible. Let’s also hope for a little more rain this season to keep our neighborhood shining bright! 281-617-2231 on activity from March, the homes in our neighborhood are on the market for an average of 20 - 30 days before going under contract. From March 15th through April 18th, Multiple Listing Service has recorded 19 home sales. This is remarkable for any neighborhood; however, it says a lot for our location and the true value of our neighborhood. Price per square foot is the important number to think about, not the sales price. Nottingham Country has a wide variety of homes, age and size. Keeping this in mind, the price per sq. ft. sold during the months of March and April range from a few foreclosures as low as $54 sq. ft. to as high as $101 per sq. ft. The majority of homes are selling at $88 - $90 per sq. ft. Usually, the price per square foot is driven by the updates within; however, curb appeal gets them in the front door! Once they are inside, there are a few important factors to help market the house. Fresh paint is always a plus and be sure to de-clutter. If you are one of the many considering the market, contact a realtor that knows the area, the updates that are needed to sell the house and be sure you are working with someone you are “at home” with. DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 450° or build a medium-high grill in campfire or barbecue.

Double fold top and ends to seal making one large foil packet or place ingredients in an aluminum cooking bag and seal carefully. Leave room for heat circulation inside. ELEVENTH ANNUAL KATY ISD JUNIOR HIGH SUMMER BAND CAMP The eleventh annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7th, 8th and 9th grade KISD band students, will be held at Seven Lakes High School from July 15th to July 19th. The camp will include daily section rehearsals, full band rehearsals and fun music based electives. Lunch is also part of the camp. The cost of the camp is $100 and will include a t-shirt if postmarked by June 7th. Late registration is an additional $25 if postmarked after June 7th. The camp concludes with the Grand Finale Concert on Friday morning at 9 AM. After the concert, those students wishing to extend the fun a little longer can join in the group’s optional trip to Splashtown Water Park in Spring, Texas for an additional $35 (park ad-

The KISD JH Summer Band Camp has been a huge success each year and we anticipate a large enrollment this year. Plan to register early in order to secure a spot. Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement the first day of camp, beginning promptly at 8 AM. Students should prepare major scales and chromatic scales specific to the student’s instrument, as well as a band camp audition etude. Students will be ability grouped with the number of bands being determined by total enrollment for the camp. Registration Form, Audition materials and Medical Form and Permission to Travel are to be downloaded by campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage www.katyisd. org/finearts - An email confirmation is sent out upon receipt of registration and follow up reminders from the camp coordinator will be sent before the camp begins, so make sure your email address is clearly printed on the registration form. The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over the summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will receive top quality instruction on their instruments from our own great KISD and Houston area Band Directors. Texas Christian School Each year the four year olds through the eighth grade students at Texas Christian School become published authors! Students collaborated to write and illustrate their very own hardbound books. The students of Texas Christian School are celebrating the publication of their books in a big way. While writing their books, the students learned that hard work really does pays off and that writing is a lot of work. Students went through the entire process from first rough draft, many revisions and finally the publication process where they now own their very own book as the author. Texas Christian’s writing program is designed to motivate students to learn through publishing by enabling students to write, illustrate and publish full-color, hardbound books that they will enjoy for years. Texas Christian School is extremely proud of their student’s hard work and they look forward to many more books from their young authors.

Christ Church Vacation Bible School Get ready to gear up for a fantastic summertime adventure! July 22-26, 2013, Christ Church PCA will hold its annual Vacation Bible School daily from 8:30 AM until 12:00 PM. Living Word Lutheran Church Bringing the Story of Palestine to the World Bright Stars of Bethlehem was born out of the dream and vision of Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb. In 1995, Rev. Raheb began an outreach ministry in Bethlehem, Palestine from the congregation he serves, Christmas Lutheran Church. As this ministry grew, it attracted the attention of several supporters in the United States. In 2003, Bright Stars of Bethlehem was incorporated “to support the health, education, cultural and spiritual development of the people of the Middle East in order to promote peace and harmony in the region.” Today, Bright Stars of Bethlehem has an ever-increasing network of supporters in the U.S., which impacts the lives of over 60,000 men, women and children in Palestine. St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Katy is pleased to announce that Dr. Pat Sparks has been named our new senior pastor. Dr. Sparks is currently serving as Southwest District Superintendent in the Texas Annual Conference. He will begin transitioning into his new duties April 14 and will be at St. Peter’s full time by mid-May. “I am very excited to be part of such a wonderful church,” Dr. Sparks said. “God is doing great things through St. Peter’s and it will be a blessing to join them in the work of connecting the world with God’s love.” Pat and his wife, Gina, have a 14-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter. Prior to his appointment as District Superintendent, Pat served the Jefferson Circuit, South Texarkana, Tennison Memorial in Mount Pleasant, Avinger and Mims Chapel Circuit, Bridges Chapel and Greenhill Circuit, First UMC in Conroe, First UMC in Linden, Pleasant Retreat in Tyler, First UMC in Lindale, Bear Creek UMC in Houston and First UMC in Longview. He graduated from East Texas State University in 1980. While attending Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University, he was ordained as a Deacon in 1981. After earning his Master of Divinity degree in 1983 he was ordained as an Elder in 1986. He earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Brite Divinity School in 2002.

The HFAC Royal Academy of Dance program is offering an Alice in Wonderland Ballet Camp that meets Monday and Wednesday evenings, July 22nd-August 24th. New this summer is a 2-week lighting and sound engineering camp for teens who want to learn how to provide technical support for musicals, comedies and dramas. The HFAC Summer 2013 line-up offers maximum scheduling flexibility at rates that are lower than anywhere in Houston. The average performing arts camp in Houston costs in excess of $11 per hour. HFAC camp tuition ranges from $5.23-$5.57 per hour before discounts. The 3-week camps are $575 or $5.23/hr and the 1-week camps are $195 or $5.57 per hour. Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.

The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels - D’Addieco team continued their impressive start to the season with another 1st place finish in the March 30th Houston Premier Spring Madness tournament in The Woodlands, TX. After a shaky first half in the first game, the Rebels mounted a 14 point comeback in the second half and held on to win by 3 points. They won the championship against the host team by an impressive 22 points while battling foul trouble and physical play. Again, hustle and intensity, along with some clutch free throws, late game execution and a solid zone defense proved to be the difference. As a Boy Scout, Tex has earned 43 merit badges and has held several leadership positions including Senior Patrol Leader, Instructor, Patrol Leader and Chaplain’s Aide. In addition, Tex received the Texas Award, completed the Mile Swim and attended National Youth Leadership Training. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow. For his service project, Tex led a team of scouts and adults in the design and construction of a crushed granite pathway leading up to and around a gazebo at Church on the Rock in Katy. The son of Kenn and Peggy Loch, Tex is a member of Kingsland Baptist Church and an 8th grader at McMeans Junior High, where he serves as Student Council President, Yearbook coeditor and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society.
