MORE THAN 50 U.S. CITIES TO HOLD EVENTS IN SUPPORT OF WILLIAMS SYNDROME AWARENESS WEEK Our family lives in Pin Oak Village and we are the parents of Lila (10) who was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome at 6 months old. Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic condition, which affects 1 in 10,000 people worldwide. Lila was born in Katy at St. Catherine Hospital and attends Hutsell Elementary in the Life Skills program. In the Katy area alone, we have 4 families with children in elementary, 1 who attends HS and 1 who has graduated. As with any disability, awareness, inclusion and acceptance are our goals for our children. On June 1, 2013, we will be hosting our Walk4Williams and family picnic event. There is more specific information on the walk in the dated events section of the newsletter. ABOUT THE WILLIAMS SYNDROME ASSOCIATION The Williams Syndrome Association (WSA) is a volunteer organization formed in 1982 by family members of people living with the disorder. Today, the WSA is the most comprehensive resource for people and families living with Williams syndrome as well as doctors, researchers and educators, providing programs and support in the areas of education, enrichment and research. For more information on the Williams Syndrome Association, please visit www.williams-syndrome.org

To schedule lifeguards for any pool party, contact Michelle with Sweetwater pools at 281-300-6077. There is an additional form for Pool Rental, as well as cost, that must be filled out and paid prior to scheduling lifeguards. No pool party can be had without the approval of Sweetwater and at least one additional guard. Feel free to contact Martha at 281-392-8007. Martha’s address is 24606 Mt. Auburn Drive. Martha’s email address is as follows: rbaxter724@aol.com. Due to the many clubs and church groups that have reserved weekly dates being sought for by residents, the preference for use will be given to residents needs over weekly functions. Jeff will do his best to accommodate both weekly reservations and resident’s use.

Each pole has a number on it and you will need to give this number to the operator as well as the names of the closest streets. 281-617-2231 When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

SUMMER MEANS SWIM TIME
Summer is almost here, which means pools will be opening for the summer. Please take time to review water safety with your children before they even enter the pool. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children age 14 and under. Believe it or not, the majority of children who drown do so in residential swimming pools while being cared for by one or both parents. In the time it takes you to run into the house to answer the phone, your child could drown - in as little as one inch of water.
Recommended by The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you not install Tom swimming Tynan, pools at all until your children are over 5 years of610 age. SportsRadio amIf you do have a pool, install a four-sided fence, about 5 feet high, with a self-closing latch that’s out of the reach of children. In open bodies of water and on boats, always use personal flotation devices, making sure that they fit properly. But floats and swimming lessons often give parents a false sense of
Pin Oak Village June 2013
security; they’re no replacement for supervision. At community pools, do not solely lean on the lifeguards to supervise your children. You are your child’s best safety net. Keep an eye on your children, learn CPR and keep a telephone with emergency numbers near the pool.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.

The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels - D’Addieco team continued their impressive start to the season with another 1st place finish in the March 30th Houston Premier Spring Madness tournament in The Woodlands, TX. After a shaky first half in the first game, the Rebels mounted a 14 point comeback in the second half and held on to win by 3 points. They won the championship against the host team by an impressive 22 points while battling foul trouble and physical play. Again, hustle and intensity, along with some clutch free throws, late game execution and a solid zone defense proved to be the difference. The team has demonstrated the ability to win gritty, close games, which should serve them well later in the season. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on another excellent tournament!

CHURCH NEWS LIVING WORD LUTHERAN CHURCH BRINGING THE STORY OF PALESTINE TO THE WORLD Bright Stars of Bethlehem was born out of the dream and vision of Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb. In 1995, Rev. Raheb began an outreach ministry in Bethlehem, Palestine from the congregation he serves, Christmas Lutheran Church. As this ministry grew, it attracted the attention of several supporters in the United States. In 2003, Bright Stars of Bethlehem was incorporated “to support the health, education, cultural and spiritual development of the people of the Middle East in order to promote peace and harmony in the region.” Today,
Bright Stars of Bethlehem has an ever-increasing network of supporters in the U.S., which impacts the lives of over 60,000 men, women and children in Palestine. Born and raised in Bethlehem, Palestine, Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb serves as the President of Bright Stars of Bethlehem. In February of 2012, he was awarded the prestigious German Media Prize award and is an internationally-acclaimed author and speaker. Rev. Raheb has been featured on many major international media outlets and networks including CNN, ABC, BBC, ARD, ZDF, DW, BR, Premiere, Raiuno, Stern, The Economist and Newsweek. He was a key subject of an April 2012 CBS News “60 Minutes” segment on Palestinian Christians. Described as “the most widely published Palestinian theologian,” Rev. Raheb has authored more than 16 books. He is skilled in more than seven languages and participates in theological dialogue, peace building and dream making throughout the world. Living Word Lutheran Church is pleased to host Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb as a guest speaker during their worship services on Sunday, June 2nd at 8, 9:30 and 11 AM. The Katy community is cordially invited to join us at this unique event. Living Word is located at 3700 S. Mason Road, Katy 77450.

Exciting free activities - from game days and movie nights to cookie decorating and scrapbooking classes - are being planned, while area teens discover the wonders of the world that can be found between the pages of a book! Library programs and activities begin during the week of June 10th and continue through August 3rd. The theme for this year is “Beneath the Surface.” Teens in grades 6 and up are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total number of hours they spend reading or the number of reading-related activities they complete. When the online registration form has been completed, the teens will then have their own online page on which to record their hours and activities. For the first ten activities completed, each teen will receive a mystery prize. The rewards continue with a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. Reading rewards can be redeemed beginning Monday, June 10th. The last day to pick up awards is August 31st. The names of participants will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card that will be awarded to several lucky readers completing 20 activities or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location. BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

Students should prepare major scales and chromatic scales specific to the student’s instrument, as well as a band camp audition etude. Students will be ability grouped with the number of bands being determined by total enrollment for the camp. Registration Form, Audition materials and Medical Form and Permission to Travel are to be downloaded by campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage www.katyisd. org/finearts - An email confirmation is sent out upon receipt of registration and follow up reminders from the camp coordinator will be sent before the camp begins, so make sure your email address is clearly printed on the registration form. The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over the summer due to scheduling and/or costs. YOUR HEALTH NOW! - EASY WAYS TO CUT CALORIES, WITHOUT TRYING! We have to reduce 3,500 calories to lose one pound. Sounds difficult? It is very easy. Check out these easy ways to cut calories and not even notice! • Use a smaller plate or bowl - this forces you to put less on your plate/bowl. • Put your fork/spoon down between each bite - it takes 15-20 minutes for your brain to sense your stomach is full. Savor each bite of food by putting down your fork/spoon. • Chew your food more - this is a BIG must. Mom always said “chew your food. Your stomach doesn’t have teeth in it.” Experts say to chew each bite 39 times. This makes us eat slower and enjoy each bite. • Power down - turn off the TV, put away the phone and focus on your food! Else we end up eating more. • START your meal with a salad - say no to the bread basket or chips. Say yes to the salad with dressing on the side. It’s a few extra dollars that will help you shed many more calories! • Make fruits and veggies the biggest part of your meal - Nutrition experts say your plate should be as colorful as the rainbow. Aim for fresh veggies with your meals and end with fresh fruit for dessert!
