NEW - WESTHEIMER LAKES FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: What might get built in the commercial areas near our community? A. Since these are commercial areas, the options are open. However, there are deed restrictions that will dictate the structure design and appearance. The deed restrictions and the Board will also not permit questionable or undesirable businesses to enter the development. The Board will still retain some input on this matter, while in sales negotiations in the future. Have a question that you would like to submit? Contact Anna Lyons alyons@canyongate.com to post your question and with answer from PCMI, your property managers.

Congrats Class of 2013!

OIL STAIN CLEAN UP 1. Clean up any fresh oil stains by blotting the surface with newspaper. 2. Sprinkle a layer of clay-based cat box litter over the top of the oil stain. You want to completely cover the stain so that you can no longer see it through the litter. The litter will soak up the oil from the concrete. 3. Monitor the color of the litter several times while it is sitting on the stain. As the oil becomes absorbed into the litter, it will change to a darker color. When the litter changes colors, remove the old litter by sweeping it up with a broom. Dispose of the discolored litter as you did the oil-soaked newspapers. Sprinkle more litter onto the stain the same way you did in the prior step and continue to let it soak up the oil. Leave the stain covered with litter for a minimum of one day. Clean away all the litter after 24 hours. Sweep up the litter and dispose of it. 4. Apply a liquid dish detergent with grease-cutting agents to the oil stain. Use a scrub brush to rub the detergent into the stain.

5. Allow the detergent to settle for five minutes, then scrub the detergent into the stain again using short, circular movements. 6. Poor 1 cup of boiling water on to the dish detergent covered stain. Use your scrub brush to rub the water and soap into the stain. Take care not to burn yourself. 7. Blot up the now oily and soapy water with newspaper after the mixture has cooled for several minutes. Dispose of the newspaper. Continue to blot the area until you have absorbed all of the oily water. 8. Pour another 2 cups of boiling water over the stain. This will wash away any oily water that was not absorbed by the newspaper. Be careful not to burn yourself. If the stain is still present, repeat the process.

LET US KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS LITTER FREE! Take responsibility for yourself and be a good neighbor! Keep our streets and neighborhood trash and litter free! Make it a habit, be a good neighbor and do your part! If each person did their own part (around the outside of their home including their little stretch of street in front of their house), what a better place this would be to live! A clean environment/neighborhood makes people feel good about themselves. They will keep it clean. Some need to be

reminded. Others need to be continually reminded. It takes time to change habits. Keeping your neighborhood clean is a habit that takes conscious effort.

ANIMAL / PET CONTROL Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space… remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not be allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. To report loose dogs and cats, please call Ft. Bend Animal Control: 281-342-1512.

BASKETBALL GOALS Basketball is a fun sport that many like to play. As a reminder, please make sure that all basketball goals are kept in an upright position in your driveway. Basketball goals should not be left in the street at anytime or left on the side of your home when not in use. Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be a nuisance to drivers in the community and a hazard should there be a need for an emergency vehicle to gain access to your street. Please note this is also a violation of deed restrictions and if you receive violation letters regarding this matter you could be sent to the attorney and be liable for those charges.

UNWANTED SOLICITORS NO SOLICITING signs are posted throughout the entrances of the community. If this continues to be a growing issue at your residence and would like to place a NO SOLICITING sign in your yard, you may certainly do so. Please be sure that the sign is placed by your front door and place only (1) sign at your home. If you feel in danger and think the solicitor will be in the community long enough to call the authorities, we suggest you call the local Police Department. Thank you and please be safe…

SUMMER MEANS SWIM TIME Summer is almost here, which means pools will be opening for the summer. Please take time to review water safety with your children before they even enter the pool. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children age 14 and under. Believe it or not, the majority of children who drown do so in residential swimming pools while being cared for by one or both parents. In the time it takes you to run into the house to answer the phone, your child could drown - in as little as one inch of water.

ing l l o nr 13-14 E Now the 20 Year for chool S

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you not install swimming pools at all until your children are over 5 years of age. If you do have a pool, install a four-sided fence, about 5 feet high, with a self-closing latch that’s out of the reach of children.

With a great education, nothing is out of reach! 281-341-9910 www.westlakeprep.org 23300 Bellaire Blvd.

Conveniently located southwest of the Grand Parkway & FM1093

• Kindergarten - 5th • PK3 and PK4 (Full Day Program)

In open bodies of water and on boats, always use personal flotation devices, making sure that they fit properly. But floats and swimming lessons often give parents a false sense of security; they’re no replacement for supervision. At community pools, do not solely lean on the lifeguards to supervise your children. You are your child’s best safety net. Keep an eye on your children, learn CPR and keep a telephone with emergency numbers near the pool.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.

Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

24

Westheimer Lakes June 2013

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder’, arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre.

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.

Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. KATY REBELS ARE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS AT SPRING MADNESS TOURNEY IN THE WOODLANDS, TX The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels - D’Addieco team continued their impressive start to the season with another 1st place finish in the March 30th Houston Premier Spring Madness tournament in The Woodlands, TX. After a shaky first half in the first game, the Rebels mounted a 14 point comeback in the second half and held on to win by 3 points. They won the championship against the host team by an impressive 22 points while battling foul trouble and physical play. Again, hustle and intensity, along with some clutch free throws, late game execution and a solid zone defense proved to be the difference. The team has demonstrated the ability to win gritty, close games, which should serve them well later in the season. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on another excellent tournament!

Bright Stars of Bethlehem was born out of the dream and vision of Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb. In 1995, Rev. Raheb began an outreach ministry in Bethlehem, Palestine from the congregation he serves, Christmas Lutheran Church. As this ministry grew, it attracted the attention of several supporters in the United States. In 2003, Bright Stars of Bethlehem was incorporated “to support the health, education, cultural and spiritual development of the people of the Middle East in order to promote peace and harmony in the region.” Today, Bright Stars of Bethlehem has an ever-increasing network of supporters in the U.S., which impacts the lives of over 60,000 men, women and children in Palestine. Born and raised in Bethlehem, Palestine, Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb serves as the President of Bright Stars of Bethlehem. In February of 2012, he was awarded the prestigious German Media Prize award and is an internationally-acclaimed author and speaker. Rev. Raheb has been featured on many major international media outlets and networks including CNN, ABC, BBC, ARD, ZDF, DW, BR, Premiere, Raiuno, Stern, The Economist and Newsweek. He was a key subject of an April 2012 CBS News “60 Minutes” segment on Palestinian Christians. Described as “the most widely published Palestinian theologian,” Rev. Raheb has authored more than 16 books. He is skilled in more than seven languages and participates in theological dialogue, peace building and dream making throughout the world. YOUR HEALTH NOW! - EASY WAYS TO CUT CALORIES, WITHOUT TRYING! We have to reduce 3,500 calories to lose one pound. Sounds difficult? It is very easy. Check out these easy ways to cut calories and not even notice! • Use a smaller plate or bowl - this forces you to put less on your plate/bowl. • Put your fork/spoon down between each bite - it takes 15-20 minutes for your brain to sense your stomach is full. Savor each bite of food by putting down your fork/spoon. • Chew your food more - this is a BIG must. Mom always said “chew your food. Your stomach doesn’t have teeth in it.” Experts say to chew each bite 39 times. This makes us eat slower and enjoy each bite. • Power down - turn off the TV, put away the phone and focus on your food! Else we end up eating more. • START your meal with a salad - say no to the bread basket or chips. Say yes to the salad with dressing on the side. It’s a few extra dollars that will help you shed many more calories! • Make fruits and veggies the biggest part of your meal - Nutrition experts say your plate should be as colorful as the rainbow. Aim for fresh veggies with your meals and end with fresh fruit for dessert!
