Contact Harris County Animal Control at 281-999-3191 or 3194.
LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises of the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower beds might keep cats away. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Harris County Health Department, Rabies/Animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-3588 www.countypets.com

PET HOTLINE NEWS
A very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all. Marie Nugent - 281-859-1104 6

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Bear Creek June 2013
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums t o encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

TEXAS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL N E WS TCS STUDENT AUTHORS
Each year the four year olds through the eighth grade students at Texas Christian School become published authors! Students collaborated to write and illustrate their very own hardbound books. The stud e n t s o f Te x a s Christian School are celebrating the publication of their books in a big way. While writing their books, the students learned that hard work really does pays off and that writing is a lot of work. Students went through the entire process from first rough draft, many revisions and finally the publication process where they now own their very own book as the author. Texas Christian’s writing program is designed to motivate students to learn through publishing by enabling students to write, illustrate and publish fullcolor, hardbound books that they will enjoy for years. Texas Christian School is extremely proud of their student’s hard work and they look forward to many more books from their young authors.
TCS SENIOR HEADING FOR THE MARINES
Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible. Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

The Houston Family Arts Center is in its 8th season, an exciting line-up of plays and musicals all of which reflect the theme of “memories and traditions.” The season includes a timeless American classic, a stunning Tennessee Williams drama, three Tony Award-winning Best Musicals, the “revival” version of a musical with characters created by cartoonist Charles M. Schultz and two hilarious comedies. Patrons can purchase their tickets online at www.houstonfac.com or call the HFAC box office at 281-685-6374. free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre.
FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain

SUMMER MEANS SWIM TIME
Summer is almost here, which means pools will be opening for the summer. Please take time to review water safety with your children before they even enter the pool. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injuryrelated death among children age 14 and under. Believe it or not, the majority of children who drown do so in residential swimming pools while being cared for by one or both parents. In the time it takes you to run into the house to answer the phone, your child could drown - in as little as one inch of water. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you not install swimming pools at all until your children are over 5 years of age. If you do have a pool, install a four-sided fence, about 5 feet high, with a self-closing latch that’s out of the reach of children. 24

In open bodies of water and on boats, always use personal flotation devices, making sure that they fit properly. But floats and swimming lessons often give parents a false sense of security; they’re no replacement for supervision. At community pools, do not solely lean on the lifeguards to supervise your children. You are your child’s best safety net. Keep an eye on your children, learn CPR and keep a telephone with emergency numbers near the pool.

MOSQUITO TRAP (YES, IT’S SKEETER TIME!)
JP Roofing & Gutters
1. Cut a plastic 2-liter bottle in two, halfway between the bottom and the top. 2. Mix 1/4 cup of brown sugar with 1 cup of hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the 2-liter bottle. 3. Add 1 gram of yeast. No need to mix. One packet of Fleischman’s active dry yeast is usually 1/4 ounce or 7 grams, so just a pinch is enough and you’ll have plenty left over from the packet for subsequent refills for your trap (put the leftover yeast packet in a ziplock bag and place in your refrigerator). 4. Place the funnel (top) part of the bottle, upside down, into the bottom half of the bottle, making sure the opening doesn’t extend into the water mixture. Tape the two halves of the bottle together securely with electrical (black) tape so there are no gaps. The black color attracts mosquitoes. 5. Place the trap in an area outside that is away from your normal gathering/activities area. 6. Change the solution every 2 weeks. Skeeter repellent - Slice a lime in half and press about 10-12 whole cloves into each half. Place in your gathering area. This only works if the smell of cloves doesn’t repel you and your guests too!

Please call HPCA OFFICE at 281-463-1216 to reach a board member.
PURPOSE OF HUNTER’S PARK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Hunter’s Park Community Association handles the financial and legal affairs of the subdivision. Each lot owner is required to pay an annual maintenance fee which is used to pay street lights; pay taxes on and maintain the common areas, such as the swimming pools, tennis courts, etc.; pay for security; and pay legal expenses incurred to enforce the deed restrictions. The Board meets every other month at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the community building. Residents are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to place an item on the agenda should call the HPCA office in advance. The Annual Meeting of Members is held on the 4th Thursday of January. Members hold three year staggered terms and are elected. The election process is as follows: 1) Mail in ballots will be mailed out with the Annual Maintenance fee statements. 2) Voting in person will begin on the 1st Monday after the Annual Meeting ending on the following Saturday at 7pm.
HPCA Office
Office Phone: 281 463-1216 Office Hrs: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon- Fri. Closed Weekends and Major Holidays HPCA employs two workers to provide coverage for the office. Every effort is made to have one of the two employees in the office at all times. Occasionally business of the association may require us to be out of the office for a short period of time. If we are out of the office when you call or if you call after hours, please leave a message on the answering machine and your calls will be returned as soon as possible during office hours.
DEED RESTRICTIONS Deed restrictions are strictly enforced by Hunter’s Park Community Association. Copies of the restrictions are available at the association’s office or by mail (call 281 463-1216). Complaint forms are included in every Bear Creek Newsletter for your convenience. The association’s office verifies complaints and writes letters to violators. HPCA will initiate legal action when warranted, to enforce the deed restrictions. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL You must submit any plans for improvements or modifications of your home to the Hunter’s Park Community Association Office. Your plans will be checked to insure that they comply with the deed restrictions. This includes re-roofing, playforts (8 ft. height limit), temporary storage buildings, etc. Please call the office at 281 463-1216 if you need any additional help or assistance. SECURITY Hunter’s Park Community Association provides additional security currently through a contract with Commissioners Court for four Harris County Constables. HPCA also hires off-duty deputies on an as-needed basis for additional coverage. Please call the Constable’s Office at 281 463-6666 to report any suspicious person, activity or for vacation watch. There is a voluntary $2.00 security contribution on the M.U.D. #6 water bill that goes to each homeowner. The voluntary contributions can only be used to pay for security. This contribution enables HPCA to provide more coverage without raising maintenance fees. Judy - Security Directory - HPCA - (281) 463-1216
