NOTES FROM THE BOARD
Correction: In the May newsletter, we inadvertently posted the wrong email address for contacting the Copper Village Board. The correct address is; coppervillageca-0296@amitx.com. As previously noted, we welcome our resident’s questions, comments, concerns and feedback regarding our community. Spring is here and as the Texas heat begins to set in, many homeowners will be increasing the watering schedule for their lawn and flowerbeds to keep the grass a lush green and the flowers bright and colorful. This means it’s probably time for some sprinkler maintenance. To save money on your water bill, check each sprinkler head to ensure there are no leaks, no dirt, debris or plants restricting the spray, station timers are not over watering/ looding any areas and that each head is adjusted so that you’re not watering your sidewalk/driveway… literally water and money “down the drain.” “LIKE” us on Facebook: From Community projects and events, to lost pets and crime alerts. Facebook is a great tool to connect with your neighbors and our HOA has joined in an effort to help expand communication. Like, share and follow “Copper Village HOA,” we look forward to having you as our FRIEND! BOARD HOUSEKEEPING: • As more and more residents are getting out and about to enjoy the weather, the Board is receiving more and more complaints regarding pet owners not picking up after their pets. Please be a responsible pet owner and cleanup after your animal. • Attention Tennis Players. Our lighted courts provide extended hours of access and play in the cooler night air increases as spring and summer set in. But we do ask that you be conscious of your neighbors near the courts and the expense of “keeping the lights on” when setting the automatic light timer. Your cooperation in seeing to it that the lights go OFF within minutes of completion of your match may afford us electrical cost savings that can be allocated for other community improvements and maintenance to all areas, including the tennis courts and park. Good Neighbors, GREAT Neighbors: We all strive to keep our property well kept and welcoming for our families and guest, please be considerate of this in maintaining your own property and encourage your neighbors to do the same.

Yellow jackets, paper wasps and hornets are the most common types of wasps that build their nests right where you don’t want them - in and around the lawn and garden. While these insects are often seen as pests due to their nasty stings, they’re actually important for the garden as both predatory insects and pollinators. However, when their nests get a little too close for comfort, like in the yard, it’s sometimes necessary to eliminate wasps to avoid any future problems that may arise. Wasp Deterrent The best way to deal with wasps is to minimize their numbers by deterring them from the area. Do not keep any food (including your pet’s) lying around. Keep drinks covered when outdoors and always ensure that garbage cans are tightly sealed. Also, keep any fallen fruits from nearby trees or shrubs, as well as in the garden, picked up, as their sweet juices attract the wasps. How to Get Rid of Wasps If you already have a wasp problem and you need to know how to kill wasps, then it helps to understand what type you are dealing with and their particular nesting habits. Yellow jackets, for instance, normally build their nests in the ground and unfortunately, you may not even know they’re there until it’s too late. Nothing is worse than going out to the garden and coming back with a dozen or so stings. These aggressive wasps can also be found nesting in trees and shrubs, beneath eaves and within other areas like wall voids in old buildings. Hornets, too, commonly nest in trees or under the eaves of buildings. Paper wasps, which are the least aggressive, can be found just about anywhere, building their nests under nearly any

horizontal surface - including eaves, overhangs, tree limbs and within abandoned structures. Most of the time all of these wasps prefer quiet, out-of-theway places. Of course, it doesn’t always seem to work out like that. This is when getting rid of wasps is our only option through the use of sprays or other means. How to Kill Wasps Generally, spring is the most ideal time for killing wasps, before the queen has established her colony. By late summer and fall, their nests decline as they become more interested in collecting pollen or foraging for sugary sweets. If the nest is large or you’re dealing with the more aggressive types, like yellow jackets and hornets, you may want to call in reinforcements (professionals) to handle the job. Otherwise, you can grab the can of wasp and hornet spray and following label instructions, spray the insecticide into the nest entrance or saturate the paper wasp nest during evening hours when the wasps are less active. In addition to regular wasp spray, some people also use WD40. However, when killing wasps in a plant (such as a tree or shrub), this isn’t always practical. That’s when using a home remedy to remove a wasp nest is necessary. For aerial nests, cover with a trash bag and seal it shut. Cut the nest from the tree and leave it in the sun the next day or freeze it to kill the wasps inside. For those in the ground, pour a soapy solution (preferably hot) down the entrance and then seal it off with dirt or a large boulder. Keep in mind these usually have two entrances, so locating the back entrance is a good idea before you start. www.gardeningknowhow.com

SUMMER MEANS SWIM TIME
Summer is almost here, which means pools will be opening for the summer. Please take time to review water safety with your children before they even enter the pool. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children age 14 and under. Believe it or not, the majority of children who drown do so in residential swimming pools while being cared for by one or both parents. In the time it takes you to run into the house to answer the phone, your child could drown - in as little as one inch of water. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you not install swimming pools at all until your children are over 5 years of age. If you do have a pool, install a four-sided fence, about 5 feet high, with a self-closing latch that’s out of the reach of children. In open bodies of water and on boats, always use personal flotation devices, making sure that they fit properly. But floats and swimming lessons often give parents a false sense of security; they’re no replacement for supervision. At community pools, do not solely lean on the lifeguards to supervise your children. You are your child’s best safety net. Keep an eye on your children, learn CPR and keep a telephone with emergency numbers near the pool.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest

part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

16100 Cairnway, Suite 285 LADYBUG ROCKS
By: Amanda Formaro Difficulty: Very Easy Age: 3 and up Your kids can make these adorable ladybug rocks craft as shelf decorations or make a large one as to be used on Mom’s desk as a paperweight. While the average ladybug is red, ours come in several vibrant colors. Let your kids pick their favorite! What you’ll need: • Smooth, round or oval rocks, washed and dried • Acrylic craft paint in colors of our choice • Black acrylic craft paint • 2 wiggle eyes for each ladybug • Black permanent marker • Acrylic matte sealer spray • White craft glue (recommended: Tacky Glue) How to make it: • Completely wash and dry all rocks. • Paint rocks in desired colors, allow them to dry. Apply second and third coats if needed, lighter colors will require more coats than darker shades. • Paint heads on using black acrylic craft paint. There is no pattern needed, simply paint about 1/4 of the rock black in the “front.” • Use a black permanent marker to draw a straight line down the center of the rock, starting at the center of the base of the “head.” • Dip the end of a large paint-brush or the eraser of a pencil, in black craft paint. Dot on the spots, reloading with paint after every dot. • Once the paint is dry, spray the rock(s) with acrylic sealer spray. Allow sealer to dry completely. • Using white craft glue, attach wiggle eyes and let dry. Tips: • If you are doing this in a group setting such as scouts or a classroom, you may find it easier to prepare the rocks ahead of time. Wash, dry and apply a coat of gesso (recommended: Liquitex Basics Gesso) to each rock. This is a craft medium (white) that works well with many projects. It will also create a base so that less coats of color paint will be required. • Bigger rocks are easier for small hands to manipulate. They are also heavier, so be sure that there are enough adult helpers for a group of little ones. • White and black paint can be used instead of wiggle eyes. Simply dot on white paint, allow to dry then use a smaller tool to dot on the black. • If you cannot find suitable rocks outside, you can purchase them at most craft stores.

CY-FAIR EDUCATORS HONORED AT TEACHER APPRECIATION EVENT IN FAIRFIELD
STUDENTS NOMINATE TEACHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE MOST POSITIVE INFLUENCE IN THEIR LIVES On the morning of Saturday, April 13th, over 50 Cy-Fair educators representing 15 schools were honored at a teacher appreciation brunch for their excellence in teaching. The event was sponsored by two Fairfield area congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held in their newly-completed building on Fairfield Place Drive. “This is actually the first event we’ve hosted in our new meetinghouse,” said Chris Crawford, bishop of one of the congregations. “We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to give back to those who so selflessly give every day to our most prized possessions, our children.” The program included a children’s choir, a video presentation, speakers and a brunch. Stirling D. Pack, Jr. was the keynote speaker. He told the teachers, “These young students under your care have chosen you as their outstanding teachers and mentors in all of the respective schools represented here today. We are assembled to honor you for what you do every day as teachers and administrators, making a lasting impression on their lives.” Pack noted that directing, mentoring and encouraging children to fully reach their innate potential is both a great quest and significant challenge to those who teach. Another speaker, Avery Smith, a junior at Cy-Ranch High School, said, “I invited Coach Holly Bowman because she has formed me to be a hard worker, dedicated teammate and student. She has helped me through some of my hardest classes. And as my swim coach, of course, she’s also taught me so much about swimming and being a great coach. Both of those skills have helped me become a better swimmer and a better teacher myself when I give swim lessons to younger children.” Bowman said, “I am honored to be invited here today, especially by someone like Avery, who is a motivator to me. I feel very encouraged by what I’ve heard at this event. I’ve even received some inspiration today. I’ve actually thought of a new way to approach a current challenge by being more loving and ready to

He chose Lillian Cunningham as his special teacher and directed all of his remarks at the podium to her. “Dean has touched my heart today,” Cunningham said. “He just said everything any teacher would love to hear! I feel appreciated and loved.” “This has been a wonderful event,” said Ashley Clayburn, Ed.D., assistant superintendent of school improvement and accountability in Cy-Fair I.S.D. She attended the brunch on behalf of Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent. “We thank you for taking the time to honor our teachers for the outstanding work they do each and every day. I know the teachers and students will remember this celebration for a long time to come!” Avery Smith summed up the collective feelings of all assembled when she concluded her talk by saying, “With my fellow students, we thank you for making the difference, for shaping our lives and for unlocking our future opportunities.”
MESSAGES FROM THE SUPERINTENDANT EVERY CHILD MATTERS
The child was only a couple weeks shy of his 10th birthday when he passed away, no longer able to fight the brain tumors and their devastating effects on his body. There are a number of ways I could describe this young man. He was bright. He was full of energy. He was an avid baseball fan. He was a full-faced smile waiting to happen. And as I sat among those celebrating his all-too-short life at his funeral last week, I couldn’t help but think of another important characteristic that defined him. He was a public school student. Before he had even turned 3, the child was receiving special education services from his local public school. The extent of his impairments required continual services from medical personnel, diagnosticians and therapists. The beauty of our public education system is that we do what is necessary for our brightest students, those who are most challenged and everything in between - no questions asked. When our students are not initially successful, we find another way to help them succeed. We do whatever it takes until their needs are met. When the child’s
Copper Village

parents first enrolled him in school, they knew he was only expected to live until about 4 or 5 years of age. Even so, the school only sought ways to make his life better. The excellent care, support and love he received from public educators allowed this young man to bless those around him for four more great years. A comparison I often make is that public educators are modern-day missionaries, helping improve the lives of children from all backgrounds. Our teachers are being asked to do more today for our students than ever and our students are leaving our schools with both a quality education and quality role models. Although the child I referenced is no longer with us, the lesson he leaves behind is a valuable one. Every child matters and we will care for each one who walks through our doors.
TEXAS SENATE PASSES HOUSE BILL 5
On Monday, May 6th, the Texas Senate unanimously passed House Bill 5! HB 5 changes the graduation plan to maintain rigor while affording Texas students more flexibility with their course selection. HB 5 also reduces the number of End-of-Course (EOC) exams needed for graduation from 15 to 5. The session is not over, but we are in the home stretch. The House and Senate must now collaborate to work out their differences. Thank you to all of you who have called, emailed and/or visited with our legislators regarding these important issues. There are still additional bills that we will be monitoring closely and we will keep you informed. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D - Superintendent of Schools
PASS IN REVIEW
The 11th annual Cypress-Fairbanks ISD JROTC Pass in Review took place on April 20th at the Berry Center. Approximately 900 cadets representing CFISD’s eight JROTC units and all 10 high schools showcase their skills before a crowd that district AFJROTC coordinator Judy Reidy called “the best spectator turnout in the event’s 11-year history.”

The choir banquet this year, held at Northwest Forrest Conference Center, was a huge success. Masquerade Ball was the theme on May 17th, as many adorned elaborate masks or displayed their own facial perfection! The students always shine so bright when they dress up. A huge thank you to Sandra Greer for organizing and decorating for the event. It was a magical evening as the exiting student choir board presented their successors; they will no doubt carry on in commanding style. The power point presentation of past events and happenings is always a delight, as the students recall fond times throughout their training, performing and enjoyment. May 24th found the school taking over as the all choir lock-in took place. The games they come up with are such a blast and statue is always a favorite. Food consumed by the pound and fun exploding through the evening. Thanks to all who participated, as it all occurs because of you! Schlitterbahn was high school city on the 25th as our students and chaperones, along with some other schools, took over the water city. The cool waters are always so refreshing and the technology of the water runs/coasters is always amazing and enjoyed. Who can go wrong with fun AND sun? It was a quite ride home and no doubt, there were heavy sleepers that night!
FAREWELL SENIORS! CYPRESS FALL HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR
We have had an outstanding year!!! Newsweek magazine noted us as one of the best public high schools in the nation! Most effective in turning out college ready graduates. All of our choirs received “ones,” superior ratings, which no other high school choir has achieved this year. And all due to our fantastic students under the exceptional direction of Mrs. Deidre Douglas and Matt Perez.

Our final spring concert was held on May 7th, in our school auditorium. We bid adieu to our outgoing seniors and many achievement awards are presented. The highest of these is the all around outstanding student, decided by the choral directors. This award was recieved by Abi Amadin. In addition, two scholarships, one academic and one musical, funded by the Choir Board Members. The musical scholarship to Lauren Lafferty, followed by the academic scholarship going to Abi Amadin. Congratulations to these well deserving students! Congratulations continue as we acknowledge our seniors

PET OF THE MONTH, RED
The heat and sun were just too much. So, I broke the chain and hit the road. I stopped at the office supply store and went on in, but nobody seemed very excited to see me. Thankfully, a kind lady was passing by and offered me a ride. My medical exam, shots and heartworm treatment are behind me now with no lasting damage and I am looking for my real forever family. Call me a love bug – I adore humans in all shapes and sizes. I roll over for tummy rubs and want to snuggle on the couch for movie night. Other dogs are ok, but I would rather have my people close by. Cats are very interesting, and given my lineage, I do want to give chase. Things I love: long walks, rawhide chewies and lots of hugs. Hello Neighbors, a big happy end of the school year to each of you. This is SPAA (Students Protecting America’s Animals) again. Just to remind everyone we are a student organization at Cypress Falls High School. We are helping Loving Arms to find homes for their animals. TEXAS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL STUDENT AUTHORS
Each year the four year olds through the eighth grade students at Texas Christian School become published authors! Students collaborated to write and illustrate their very own hardbound books. The students of Texas Christian School are celebrating the publication of their books in a big way. While writing their books, the students learned that hard work really does pays off and that writing is a lot of work. Students went through the entire process from first rough draft, many revisions and finally the publication process where they now own their very own book as the author. Texas Christian’s writing program is designed to motivate students to learn through publishing by enabling students to write, illustrate and publish fullcolor, hardbound books that they will enjoy for years. Texas Christian School is extremely proud of their student’s hard work and they look forward to many more books from their young authors.

TCS SENIOR HEADING FOR THE MARINES
Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible. Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

BEDTIME STORIES FOR KINDERGARTENERS AT CCS
It was a line-up that would have challenged any Hollywood premier including Abe Lincoln, Pinkalicious, Fancy Nancy, Pete the Cat, Cindy Moo, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and even Miss Ima Hogg. They were all at Cypress Christian School for the annual and quite famous “Bedtime Stories with Cookies and Milk” event. Current and future CCS kindergarten parents and students attended this star-studded gala for an evening of fellowship, stories and goodies. The children and parents shared many laughs as they listened to teachers read some of their favorite stories while dressed to the hilt! Even Elementary Principal Robert White joined in the fun as he became “Abe Lincoln.”

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN STUDENTS SERVE AT-RISK YOUTH
Twenty-six CCS students committed their Saturday to spend time with at-risk youth in the Houston area. They played games, performed a skit, led worship and shared a verse from 1 Timothy 4:12 with the message how God gives direction for young people to make a difference in His Kingdom by being an example in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. God really used the CCS students to make heart connections with abused and neglected youth and to share God’s love in a fun and unique way.

Fifth graders participated in the 2013 Cypress Christian Annual Renaissance and Reformation Festival. CCS WARRIOR TRAVIS CHAFFIN PASSES AWAY
CCS Warrior Travis Chaffin passed away on Saturday, May 4th. Travis was a junior at CCS, a great friend to his classmates, an excellent student, a standout member of the baseball team and a godly role model for his friends and family members. Travis was always thinking about others and how he could serve them. His personal goal was to always honor the Lord in his actions. Travis wrote these words not long before his passing...”I want to be a role model for others. I want my actions in school, on the baseball field and elsewhere to display Christ in my life.” In his time at CCS, Travis did indeed touch many lives with the love of Christ. He placed his trust and hope in Jesus Christ and while we grieve his loss, we are comforted in knowing he is now safely home with his Lord. On Sunday, May 5th, the CCS gym was filled with over 500 people as CCS students and families came together with the Chaffin family to meet, to grieve, to pray and to comfort each other. On Monday morning, the school day began with a special assembly for secondary students in remembrance of Travis. Students were reminded that through Jesus Christ, while we grieve, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. Instead, we can find the strength to continue, even while we process the loss of such a treasured friend.

GIRL SCOUTS COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Corners Service Unit held a Bridging ceremony on May 2nd. Family and friends were present as members of twelve different troops made the change to their next Girl Scouting level. The evening began with a flag ceremony and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Girl Scout Promise. When each troop came forward, their leaders spoke about the troop’s activities and service projects for the year to the applause of the audience. As each girl’s name was called, she walked across a wooden bridge to be greeted by a sister Girl Scout from her new level. Many of the girls wore their new vests or sashes for the first time. Daisy troops bridging to Brownies were troops 16048, 16171, 16460, 16462, 16465 and 16467. Brownie troops bridging to the Junior level were troops 16407 and 16320. Junior troop 16464 bridged to Cadette Girl Scouts. Cadette troops 16137 and 16170 bridged to Senior Girl Scouts. Senior troop 5131 crossed the bridge to become Ambassador Girl Scouts. We are very proud of all our bridging Girl Scout! Girl Scouts from the Copper Corners Service Unit have been participating in a variety of activities. Brownie troop (now Junior troop) 16320 presented an Earth Day program for our service unit. Troop 16398 reports that they “had a blast” when they visited “Color Me Mine” in Cypress. They would like to thank Wren Hartley for making the day so special. Menchie’s has been a popular destination for field trips. Troops 16172 and 16109 were recent visitors. Troop 16109 discovered that 11 girls could fit in a Menchie’s freezer…they can really claim to have had a “cool” time! National Lemonade Day on May 5th was a troop effort for 16100. They held their troop lemonade stand at a local Kroger. The day is designed to “teach kids the business of business” and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit. Selling Girl Scout cookies also helps develop many business skills. Troop 16464 participated in Geocache at Sheldon Lake State Park. While summer may slow the activities of individual troops, many Girl Scouts participate in resident, day and twilight camps. There are many opportunities to learn new skills and make new friends and it is not too late to sign up! Camp information (and lots of other information!) can be found on the Council website, www.gssjc.org. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) to 18 who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Copper Corners service unit serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle schools and the corresponding high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls! It is not too late to join Girl Scouts now! We welcome girl members and adult volunteers. Please contact Dianne Massie at 281-5509148 (Dianne.massie@att.net) for more information. We would like to thank all our leaders and other volunteers for a great year. Special thanks to our steering committee, Windee Falla, Felicia Ferguson and Donna Fontenot for all their hard work!

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson.

his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella.com - info@ mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK
During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@ gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
