SUPPORT OUR TROOPS PROJECT

As we enjoy our Independence Day celebrations, remember our freedom has come at a price and for that, we truly thank our veterans and those currently serving to keep us safe. Together our neighborhood has a wonderful opportunity to encourage our troops overseas by supporting Operation Interdependence (www.oidelivers.org), an organization that sends care packages with notes to our servicemen and women overseas. Cypress Mill HOA would like to support this effort by collecting specific items that will go into care packages for our troops. Two boxes will be set up; one in the fitness room and one in the meeting room at the recreation center where you can drop off any of the following suggested items. Socks, Monkey’s Butt Foot Powder, Moist Wipes, Chapstick, Toothpaste (Crest is suggested as best) and individual portion food items such as Energy Bars, Nuts/Seeds/single powered drink mixes, crackers, cookies and/or dried fruit. Items should be placed in the boxes on or before July 4th. Another way we can support our troops is by writing notes to be included in the care packages, but there are guidelines for the notes. If you would like the guidelines for the notes or would be interested in having a “group notewriting effort up at the clubhouse,” contact Marilynmeyers9@comcast.net.

FIREWORK SAFETY TIPS

Using consumer fireworks on July 4th is a tradition. And it can be safe if a few common sense rules are followed, says Ralph Apel, the spokesperson for the National Council on Fireworks Safety. Consumer fireworks go through vigorous third party testing in China before being shipped to the United States. But he notes, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”), there were an estimated 9,600 fireworks related injuries during the Fourth of July season in 2011. Most of these injuries would not have occurred if the fireworks had been used under close adult supervision and if some basic safety steps had been taken. The National Council on Fireworks Safety offers these common sense safety tips for using consumer fireworks in hopes that injuries to consumers can be greatly reduced this season:

• Know your fireworks; Read the warning labels and performance descriptions before igniting. • Have a designated shooter to organize and shoot your family show. • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Save your alcohol for after the show. • Parents and caretakers should always closely supervise teens if they are using fireworks. • Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks. • Fireworks should only be used outdoors. • Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks. • Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them. • Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks. • Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water. • Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can. • Never attempt to alter or modify consumer fireworks and use them only in the manner in which they were intended. • Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department.

They are creamy and delicious with a hint of honey and lemon to compliment the flavors of fresh berries on the top. Best of all, you won’t have to turn on your oven to make them. 1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin (from .25-oz envelop) 1/4 cup half-and-half 2 cups Golden Grahams® cereal, crushed (about 1 cup after crushing) 1/4 cup butter, melted 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened 1 container (6 oz.) Yoplait® Greek honey vanilla yogurt 1/4 cup honey 1 tablespoon grated lemon peel Garnish Blueberries, raspberries, chopped or halved strawberries 1 tablespoon red currant jelly In glass measuring cup, soften gelatin in half-and-half for 3 to 5 minutes. Microwave gelatin mixture on high for 30 to 45 seconds; stir until completely dissolved. Set aside. Spray mini cheesecake pan with cooking spray. In medium bowl, mix cereal and butter. Firmly press about 1 rounded tablespoonful cereal mixture into bottom of each cheesecake cup. In medium bowl, beat cream cheese with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Add gelatin mixture, yogurt, honey and lemon peel. Beat on low speed until smooth. Spoon about 2 tablespoons cream cheese mixture into each cheesecake cup. Gently giggle pan to smooth batter in cups. Refrigerate 1-1/2 hours or until set. To garnish, place 2 to 3 pieces of fruit on top of each cheesecake. In microwavable dish, microwave jelly on high for 10 to 15 seconds or until melted. Tips: These cheesecakes can also be made with blueberry, Key Lime or strawberry yogurt. To make pressing cereal mixture into pans easier, use a shot glass to pack down the crust inside the mini cheesecake cups.

ATTENTION PET OWNERS

As much as we love our pets and consider them part of the family, please be respectful of your neighbors and remember the following: • If your yard backs onto a retention pond, please do not throw feces (or other trash) over the fence. Often this lands on the walking path which is both an eyesore for walkers and hazardous, especially for small children. • Do not leave your dog(s) outside for extended periods if consistent barking is likely to annoy your neighbors. If this is not corrected, you may get a visit from your local deputy. • Please restrain your dog from pounding against your neighbor’s fence. There have been several instances where dogs have broken through the fence into a neighbor’s yard. If your dog does break a picket, then replace it as soon as possible.

TRASH/RECYCLING COLLECTION BINS

TRASH PICKUP

Please remember that there is no trash pickup on public holidays. Trash will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day. If the weather is particularly windy and you are setting your trash cans out on the previous evening, make sure that the items inside are secure. Nobody wants to be picking up their neighbor’s trash because the wind has blown the contents out of the bin.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE

Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

IMPORTANT DATES June 5th - Last day of school!

MESSAGES FROM THE SUPERINTENDANT EVERY CHILD MATTERS

The child was only a couple weeks shy of his 10th birthday when he passed away, no longer able to fight the brain tumors and their devastating effects on his body. There are a number of ways I could describe this young man. He was bright. He was full of energy. He was an avid baseball fan. He was a full-faced smile waiting to happen. And as I sat among those celebrating his all-too-short life at his funeral last week, I couldn’t help but think of another important characteristic that defined him. He was a public school student. Before he had even turned 3, the child was receiving special education services from his local public school. The extent of his impairments required continual services from medical personnel, diagnosticians and therapists. The beauty of our public education system is that we do what is necessary for our brightest students, those who are most challenged and everything in between - no questions asked. When our students are not initially successful, we find another way to help them succeed. We do whatever it takes until their needs are met. When the child’s parents first enrolled him in school, they knew he was only expected to live until about 4 or 5 years of age. Even so, the school only sought ways to make his life better. The excellent care, support and love

Cypress Mill

he received from public educators allowed this young man to bless those around him for four more great years. A comparison I often make is that public educators are modern-day missionaries, helping improve the lives of children from all backgrounds. Our teachers are being asked to do more today for our students than ever and our students are leaving our schools with both a quality education and quality role models. Although the child I referenced is no longer with us, the lesson he leaves behind is a valuable one. Every child matters and we will care for each one who walks through our doors. TEXAS SENATE PASSES HOUSE BILL 5 On Monday, May 6th, the Texas Senate unanimously passed House Bill 5! HB 5 changes the graduation plan to maintain rigor while affording Texas students more flexibility with their course selection. HB 5 also reduces the number of End-of-Course (EOC) exams needed for graduation from 15 to 5. The session is not over, but we are in the home stretch. The House and Senate must now collaborate to work out their differences. Thank you to all of you who have called, emailed and/or visited with our legislators regarding these important issues. There are still additional bills that we will be monitoring closely and we will keep you informed. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D, Superintendent of Schools
