DEERFIELD VILLAGE PET HOT LINE MARIE NUGENT 281-859-1104

One very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet, they can scan the chip and find the owner, just remember to change the info on it if need be. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it?” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and let you know your pet has been found and if necessary, bring your pet to you. For all new Deerfield residents, I now have a Pet Hotline tag for your pet. When a pet is in a new location, it will not know how to find its new home if it gets out. The Pet Hotline tag will have my home and cell #. I will keep a log with a photo, breed, pet’s name, your name, address and your phone contact numbers. Here’s to keeping our “best friends” SAFE.

Congratulations! Class of 2013

PLEASE, CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOGS! Please, for all the neighbors’ enjoyment of our beautiful community, please remove any “gifts” your dog leaves on private and/or common property.

LOST YOUR PET?

Veterinary Public Health DIVISION (Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website. www.countypets.com.

VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

Summer is almost here, which means pools will be opening for the summer. Please take time to review water safety with your children before they even enter the pool. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children age 14 and under. Believe it or not, the majority of children who drown do so in residential swimming pools while being cared for by one or Recommended by both parents. In the time it takes you to run into the house Tom Tynan, to answer the phone, your child could drown - in as little as SportsRadio 610water. am one inch of The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you not install swimming pools at all until your children are over 5 years of age. If you do have a pool, install a four-sided fence, about 5 feet high, with a self-closing latch that’s out of the reach of children. In open bodies of water and on boats, always use personal flotation devices, making sure that they fit properly. But floats and swimming lessons often give parents a false sense of security; they’re no replacement for supervision. At community pools, do not solely lean on the lifeguards to supervise your children. You are your child’s best safety net. Keep an eye on your children, learn CPR and keep a telephone with emergency numbers near the pool.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE

Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage.

Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

FREDDY’S PAINTING TCS STUDENT AUTHORS

Each year the four year olds through the eighth grade students at Texas Christian School become published authors! Students collaborated to write and illustrate their very own hardbound books. The students of Texas Christian School are celebrating the publication of their books in a big way. While writing their books, the students learned that hard work really does pays off and that writing is a lot of work. Students went through the entire process from first rough draft, many revisions and finally the publication process where they now own their very own book as the author. Texas Christian’s writing program is designed to motivate students to learn through publishing by enabling students to write, illustrate and publish full-color, hardbound books that they will enjoy for years. Texas Christian School is extremely proud of their student’s hard work and they look forward to many more books from their young authors.

TCS SENIOR HEADING FOR THE MARINES

Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible. Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM.
