LAKES ON ELDRIDGE BIBLE STUDY
Due to the fire at our Beach Club on Christmas night, the Lakes on Eldridge Bible Study moved to the activity center at Lakes on Eldridge North. We so appreciate their kindness and generosity in letting us share their facility on the same day and same hour as we had before the fire. Our new study focuses on Becoming A Woman Who Listens To God in a 16 week study by Sharon Jaynes. The author of this study, addresses How God still speaks to us today, identifies whose voice we hear, suggests barriers that block our hearing and remedies for learning to listen and hear when and what God speaks to us. Please join us every Tuesday morning from 9:15 AM to 12:00 Noon for fellowship, praise, study and prayer. Study guide books are available at the meetings and cost $13. The Lakes On Eldridge North is located at Tanner Rd. and Lakes On Eldridge North, between North Eldridge Parkway and Brittmoore Roads. Enter through the visitor’s gate on Tanner Rd. and give your name to the guard. Then, continue to the stop sign and turn left on Catalina Shores then continue until you see the activity center on your right. If you need additional information, please contact Stephanie at 713-560-0042.
SWANS CAN BE DANGEROUS
This time of the year, Mother Nature provides our LOE swans with some common sense. It is mating, nesting, then egg-laying season and they feel the need to protect their territory against predators including humans, dogs and other waterfowl. Most of the swans in our neighborhood are not old enough to mate but some will go through the motions of even building a nest. The pairs of swans that are old enough to produce young (cygnets) are normally gentle and can be fed while posing no threat. However, our males (cobs) will become aggressive and territorial in trying to protect their mate and their nest. This is usually temporary until mating season is over. If you are walking past a lake and a swan swims to your side and follows you, BEWARE! If you see a swan with his neck back and feathers up such as the one in the picture, please stay away, do not attempt to feed him and walk on the other side of the street as he is in ATTACK position. Please warn your nannies and sitters not to stroll babies around the swans. We must try to remember that the swans are protecting their territory and readying it for their young.

CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are, please consider and suggest rescuing vs. buying a dog from a breeder. We have every breed of purebred dog available in our Texas pounds and shelters, in great quantities. This is because of the complete lack of any regulations or limit on breeding in Texas. • Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in pounds involve purebred animals. • Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no chance of making it out of the pounds alive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these dogs; they just had the misfortune of being owned by people who did not provide for their needs and care and obviously had no real commitment to their pet. • Countless numbers of people turn their own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality that most dog lovers do not understand. • When you or someone you know considers adopting a dog, please check out one of our five local animal shelters: 1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city pound 2. Harris County Animal Control 3. Houston SPCA 4. Houston Humane Society 5. CAP - Citizens for Animal Protection Or check the following breed specific rescue organizations: www.petfinder.com www.adoptapet.com www.houstonpettalk.com/resources/rescue-groups/ We will also feature a dog in need as “The Adoptable Dog of the Month” in our Lakes on Eldridge newsletter in every issue. For any questions contact the Pet Safety Committee at www.lakesoneldridge. net or through i-neighbors.org.

THE ADOPTABLE DOG OF THE MONTH - MARLEY
Call anytime 24 hour emergency service available

Have you thought about a new best friend for your family? If so, please consider Marley, a one year old Pointer mix (maybe with a smidgen of Dalmation and maybe something else too). Marley was picked up as a stray by the City of Houston Animal Control (BARC) and was rescued just a few minutes before he was to be put down because his short hold time was up. Many volunteers work tirelessly to get dogs out of BARC and Marley was one of the lucky ones. Rescue dogs have had the misfortune of being lost or abandoned by their owners, but still make wonderful companions. No-kill shelters are not prevalent in Texas and the euthanasia rate at pounds is very high.

Marley weighs about 42 lbs., is up-to-date on all shots, neutered, heartworm negative and microchipped. He is crate trained, housebroken and also had over a month’s professional training and knows basic commands. Our boy has a very sweet and loving disposition and gets along with dogs, cats and children. He is energetic, loves to run and would be a great companion for an active family with a secure fenced backyard and children over 7. Marley’s favorite time is laying next to his person and getting tummy rubs. If you would like to meet Marley in person, please contact Nahid Haize at 832-723-8157, email: nbhaize@sbcglobal.net or Cindi Hohle at cindi.hohle@c-a-m.com. He can also be visited at Ace Hardware at 14455 Memorial Dr between Dairy Ashford and Kirkwood. If you cannot adopt Marley at this time, please also consider being a parttime foster at night, which can also be very rewarding. Meanwhile, please be certain pets you already have are wearing I.D. tags even if they are microchipped, with your phone number. We’ve spent countless hours returning lost LOE dogs who get out during the evening or on weekends and when found there is no place to keep them until owner is located. Any turned into Animal Control (Harris County or BARC) usually have only a short 72 hrs. to be claimed. Our streets are especially not safe for lose dogs at night when drivers may have trouble seeing them.

Summer is almost here, which means pools will be opening for the summer. Please take time to review water safety with your children before they even enter the pool. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children age 14 and under. Believe it or not, the majority of children who drown do so in residential swimming pools while being cared for by one or both parents. In the time it takes you to run into the house to answer the phone, your child could drown - in as little as one inch of water. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you not install swimming pools at all until your children are over 5 years of age. If you do have a pool, install a four-sided fence, about 5 feet high, with a self-closing latch that’s out of the reach of children. In open bodies of water and on boats, always use personal flotation devices, making sure that they fit properly. But floats and swimming lessons often give parents a false sense of security; they’re no replacement for supervision. At community pools, do not solely lean on the lifeguards to supervise your children. You are your child’s best safety net. Keep an eye on your children, learn CPR and keep a telephone with emergency numbers near the pool.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

“This is actually the first event we’ve hosted in our new meetinghouse,” said Chris Crawford, bishop of one of the congregations. “We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to give back to those who so selflessly give every day to our most prized possessions, our children.” The program included a children’s choir, a video presentation, speakers and a brunch. Stirling D. Pack, Jr. was the keynote speaker. He told the teachers, “These young students under your care have chosen you as their outstanding teachers and mentors in all of the respective schools represented here today. We are assembled to honor you for what you do every day as teachers and administrators, making a lasting impression on their lives.” Pack noted that directing, mentoring and encouraging children to fully reach their innate potential is both a great quest and significant challenge to those who teach.
IMPORTANT DATES
June 5th - Last day of school!
Another speaker, Avery Smith, a junior at Cy-Ranch High School, said, “I invited Coach Holly Bowman because she has formed me to be a hard worker, dedicated teammate and student. She has helped me through some of my hardest classes. And as my swim coach, of course, she’s also taught me so much about swimming and being a great coach. Both of those skills have helped me become a better swimmer and a better teacher myself when I give swim lessons to younger children.” Coach Holly Bowman (left) and her student, Avery Smith, a junior at Cy-Ranch High School.

Bowman said, “I am honored to be invited here today, especially by someone like Avery, who is a motivator to me. I feel very encouraged by what I’ve heard at this event. I’ve even received some inspiration today. I’ve actually thought of a new way to approach a current challenge by being more loving and ready to help.” Dean Fantasia, a first grader at Ault Elementary, also spoke. He chose Lillian Cunningham as his special teacher and directed all of his remarks at the podium to her. “Dean has touched my heart today,” Cunningham said. “He just said everything any teacher would love to hear! I feel appreciated and loved.” “This has been a wonderful event,” said Ashley Clayburn, Ed.D., assistant superintendent of school improvement and accountability in Cy-Fair I.S.D. She attended the brunch on behalf of Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent. “We thank you for taking the time to honor our teachers for the outstanding work

TEXAS SENATE PASSES HOUSE BILL 5
On Monday, May 6th, the Texas Senate unanimously passed House Bill 5! HB 5 changes the graduation plan to maintain rigor while affording Texas students more flexibility with their course selection. HB 5 also reduces the number of End-of-Course (EOC) exams needed for graduation from 15 to 5. The session is not over, but we are in the home stretch. The House and Senate must now collaborate to work out their differences. Thank you to all of you who have called, emailed and/or visited with our legislators regarding these important issues. There are still additional bills that we will be monitoring closely and we will keep you informed.

MESSAGES FROM THE SUPERINTENDANT EVERY CHILD MATTERS
The child was only a couple weeks shy of his 10 birthday when he passed away, no longer able to fight the brain tumors and their devastating effects on his body. There are a number of ways I could describe this young man. He was bright. He was full of energy. He was an avid baseball fan. He was a full-faced smile waiting to happen. And as I sat among those celebrating his all-too-short life at his funeral last week, I couldn’t help but think of another important characteristic that defined him. He was a public school student. Before he had even turned 3, the child was receiving special education services from his local public school. The extent of his impairments required continual services from medical personnel, diagnosticians and therapists. The beauty of our public education system is that we do what is necessary for our brightest students, those who are most challenged and everything in between - no questions asked. When our students are not initially successful, we find another way to help them succeed. We do whatever it takes until their needs are met. When the child’s parents first enrolled him in school, they knew he was only expected to live until about 4 or 5 years of age. Even so, the school only sought ways to make his life better. The excellent care, support and love he received from public educators allowed this young man to bless those around him for four more great years. A comparison I often make is that public educators are modern-day missionaries, helping improve the lives of children from all backgrounds. Our teachers are being asked to do more today for our students than ever and our students are leaving our schools with both a quality education and quality role models. Although the child I referenced is no longer with us, the lesson he leaves behind is a valuable one. Every child matters and we will care for each one who walks through our doors.

GIRL SCOUTS COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Corners Service Unit held a Bridging ceremony on May 2nd. Family and friends were present as members of twelve different troops made the change to their next Girl Scouting level. The evening began with a flag ceremony and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Girl Scout Promise. When each troop came forward, their leaders spoke about the troop’s activities and service projects for the year to the applause of the audience. As each girl’s name was called, she walked across a wooden bridge to be greeted by a sister Girl Scout from her new level. Many of the girls wore their new vests or sashes for the first time. Daisy troops bridging to Brownies were troops 16048, 16171, 16460, 16462, 16465 and 16467. Brownie troops bridging to the Junior level were troops 16407 and 16320. Junior troop 16464 bridged to Cadette Girl Scouts. Cadette troops 16137 and 16170 bridged to Senior Girl Scouts. Senior troop 5131 crossed the bridge to become Ambassador Girl Scouts. We are very proud of all our bridging Girl Scout!

Girl Scouts from the Copper Corners Service Unit have been participating in a variety of activities. Brownie troop (now Junior troop) 16320 presented an Earth Day program for our service unit. Troop 16398 reports that they “had a blast” when they visited “Color Me Mine” in Cypress. They would like to thank Wren Hartley for making the day so special. Menchie’s has been a popular destination for field trips. Troops 16172 and 16109 were recent visitors. Troop 16109 discovered that 11 girls could fit in a Menchie’s freezer…they can really claim to have had a “cool” time! National Lemonade Day on May 5th was a troop effort for 16100. They held their troop lemonade stand at a local Kroger. The day is designed to “teach kids the business of business” and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit. Selling Girl Scout cookies also helps develop many business skills. Troop 16464 participated in Geocache at Sheldon Lake State Park. While summer may slow the activities of individual troops, many Girl Scouts participate in resident, day and twilight camps. There are many opportunities to learn new skills and make new friends and it is not too late to sign up! Camp information (and lots of other information!) can be found on the Council website, www.gssjc.org. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) to 18 who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Copper Corners service unit serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle schools and the corresponding high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls! It is not too late to join Girl Scouts now! We welcome girl members and adult volunteers. Please contact Dianne Massie at 281-5509148 (Dianne.massie@att.net) for more information. We would like to thank all our leaders and other volunteers for a great year. Special thanks to our steering committee, Windee Falla, Felicia Ferguson and Donna Fontenot for all their hard work!

BOY SCOUTS BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School. Please contact Paul Cowan, Copperhead District Executive (713689-9703 or email eaglewithpalms@yahoo.com) to find join a Scouting unit near you.

Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes to High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer. FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre.

CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK
During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@ gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

TEXAS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL STUDENT AUTHORS
For info packet call 281-363-0600 or email us at admin@hdas.biz
Each year the four year olds through the eighth grade students at Texas Christian School become published authors! Students collaborated to write and illustrate their very own hardbound books. The students of Texas Christian School are celebrating the publication of their books in a big way. While writing their books, the students learned that hard work really does pays off and that writing is a lot of work. Students went through the entire process from first rough draft, many revisions and finally the publication process where they now own their very own book as the author. Texas Christian’s writing program is designed to motivate students to learn through publishing by enabling students to write, illustrate and publish fullcolor, hardbound books that they will enjoy for years. Texas Christian School is extremely proud of their student’s hard work and they look forward to many more books from their young authors.

TCS SENIOR HEADING FOR THE MARINES
Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible. Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

BEDTIME STORIES FOR KINDERGARTENERS AT CCS
It was a line-up that would have challenged any Hollywood premier including Abe Lincoln, Pinkalicious, Fancy Nancy, Pete the Cat, Cindy Moo, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and even Miss Ima Hogg. They were all at Cypress Christian School for the annual and quite famous “Bedtime Stories with Cookies and Milk” event. Current and future CCS kindergarten parents and students attended this star-studded gala for an evening of fellowship, stories and goodies. The children and parents shared many laughs as they listened to teachers read some of their favorite stories while dressed to the hilt! Even Elementary Principal Robert White joined in the fun as he became “Abe Lincoln.”

Twenty-six CCS students committed their Saturday to spend time with at-risk youth in the Houston area. They played games, performed a skit, led worship and shared a verse from 1 Timothy 4:12 with the message how God gives direction for young people to make a difference in His Kingdom by being an example in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. God really used the CCS students to make heart connections with abused and neglected youth and to share God’s love in a fun and unique way.

CCS Warrior Travis Chaffin passed away on Saturday, May 4th. Travis was a junior at CCS, a great friend to his classmates, an excellent student, a standout member of the baseball team and a godly role model for his friends and family members. Travis was always thinking about others and how he could serve them. His personal goal was to always honor the Lord in his actions. Travis wrote these words not long before his passing...”I want to be a role model for others. I want my actions in school, on the baseball field and elsewhere to display Christ in my life.” In his time at CCS, Travis did indeed touch many lives with the love of Christ. He placed his trust and hope in Jesus Christ and while we grieve his loss, we are comforted in knowing he is now safely home with his Lord. On Sunday, May 5th, the CCS gym was filled with over 500 people as CCS students and families came together with the Chaffin family to meet, to grieve, to pray and to comfort each other. On Monday morning, the school day began with a special assembly for secondary students in remembrance of Travis. Students were reminded that through Jesus Christ, while we grieve, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. Instead, we can find the strength to continue, even while we process the loss of such a treasured friend.
