"Doing business from the same location since 1978"
As a reminder, it is critical to be able to recognize something that is out of the ordinary. Although many residents don’t know all their neighbors, they usually know a few. They also become familiar with patterns of living, like when people leave for work, the cars normally seen in a driveway, etc. It is these patterns that become what we consider “normal.” Whenever we see something that is not normal, it should warrant our attention. It may be a vehicle parked in a driveway or street, it may be someone walking on the street from house to house or it may even look like someone who is working on a project. If anything looks suspicious, call the Sheriff (713-221-6000). If someone knocks on your door, make certain you know who it is, before you open the door, it if sounds out of the ordinary call the Sheriff. If you in any way think something may be suspicious, call it in to the Sheriff (713-221-6000)! Please continue to call in any and all suspicious activity you observe at any time, to the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 713-221-6000 (Option 1 for dispatch). For life threatening emergencies call 911.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to

cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems. Langham
USING LEMONS, VINEGAR AND BAKING SODA AS NATURAL CLEANING PRODUCTS IN YOUR HOME
Vinegar Vinegar naturally cleans like an all-purpose cleaner. Mix a solution of 1 part water to 1 part vinegar in a new store bought spray bottle and you have a solution that will clean most areas of your home. Vinegar is a great natural cleaning product as well as a disinfectant and deodorizer. Always test on an inconspicuous area. It is safe to use on most surfaces and has the added bonus of being incredibly cheap. Improperly diluted vinegar is acidic and can eat away at tile grout. Never use vinegar on marble surfaces. Don’t worry about your home smelling like vinegar. The smell disappears when it dries. Here are some uses for vinegar in the rooms of your house. Use it in the… Bathroom - Clean the bathtub, toilet, sink and countertops. Use pure vinegar in the toilet bowl to get rid of rings. Flush the toilet to allow the water level to go down. Pour the undiluted vinegar around the inside of the rim. Scrub down the bowl. Mop the floor in the bathroom with a vinegar/water solution. The substance will also eat away the soap scum and hard water stains on your fixtures and tile. Make sure it is safe to use with your tile. Kitchen - Clean the stovetop, appliances, countertops and floor. Laundry Room - Use vinegar as a natural fabric softener. This can be especially helpful for families who have sensitive skin. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle in place of store bought fabric softener. Vinegar has the added benefit of breaking down laundry detergent more effectively. (A plus when you have a family member whose skin detects every trace of detergent.) Lemon Juice Lemon juice is another natural substance that can be used to clean your home. Lemon juice can be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits. Lemon is a great substance to

clean and shine brass and copper. Lemon juice can be mixed with vinegar and or baking soda to make cleaning pastes. Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle baking soda on the cut section. Use the lemon to scrub dishes, surfaces and stains. Mix 1 cup olive oil with 1/2 cup lemon juice and you have a furniture polish for your hardwood furniture. A favorite use for the fruit is to put a whole lemon peel through the garbage disposal. It freshens the drain and the kitchen. Orange peels can be used with the same results.
Mix together in a spray bottle and you’ll have your own multipurpose cleaner. Most useful in the bathroom and kitchen on surfaces.
Baking Soda Baking soda can be used to scrub surfaces in much the same way as commercial abrasive cleansers. Baking soda is great as a deodorizer. Place a box in the refrigerator and freezer to absorb odors. Put it anywhere you need deodorizing action. Try these three kitchen ingredients as natural cleaning products in your home.
Heat Hazards • If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child’s wading pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in. • Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. • Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water. • Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun’s heat is less intense. • Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can burn your dog’s paws. • Dogs that are brachycephalic (short-faced), such as Bulldogs, Boxers, Japanese Chins and Pekingese, have an especially hard time in the heat because they do not pant as efficiently as longer-faced dogs. Keep your brachycephalic dog inside with air-conditioning.
• Recipe For Homemade Furniture Polish 1 cup olive oil 1/2 cup lemon juice Mix together in a clean new spray bottle. To use, remember to shake before each application. Apply a small portion to your cleaning cloth. Spread the polish over the furniture, trying to polish evenly. Use another clean cloth to polish the surface dry. • Recipe For Homemade Glass Cleaner 1 cup rubbing alcohol 1 cup water 1 tablespoon vinegar Using isopropyl alcohol and white vinegar together makes a quickly evaporating spray glass and mirror cleaner that competes with national brands. This can also be used to give a nice shine to hard tiles, chrome and other surfaces. • Recipe For Homemade Surface Cleaner 1 cup white vinegar 1 cup water

SUMMER PET SAFETY TIPS
Hot weather can make us all uncomfortable and it poses special risks for your dog. Keep the following safety concerns in mind as the temperature rises and follow our tips to keep your dog cool.
General Health • Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, especially since dogs tend to stay outdoors longer and come into contact with other animals more during the summer months. • Keep dogs off of lawns that have been chemically treated or fertilized for 24 hours (or according to package instructions) and away from potentially toxic plants and flowers. • Keep your dog well brushed and clean. • Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes, which carry heartworm disease, are more prevalent in warmer months. Ask your veterinarian for an effective preventive to keep these parasites off your dog.

Beach Tips • Make sure your dog has a shady spot to rest in and plenty of fresh water. • Dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur and pink skin, can sunburn. Limit your dog’s exposure during the day and apply sun block to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside. • Check with a lifeguard for daily water conditions. Dogs are easy targets for sea lice and jellyfish. • Running on the sand is strenuous exercise. A dog that is out of shape can easily pull a tendon or ligament, so keep a check on your dog’s activity. • Do not let your dog drink seawater; the salt will make him sick. • Salt and other minerals in ocean water can damage your dog’s coat, so rinse him off at the end of the day. • Not all beaches permit dogs; check local ordinances before heading out. Water Safety • Most dogs enjoy swimming, but some cannot swim and others may hate the water. Be conscious of your dog’s preferences and skills before trying to make them swim. • If you’re swimming for the first time with your dog, start in shallow water and coax him in by calling his name. Encourage him with toys or treats. Or, let him follow another experienced dog he is friendly with. • Never throw your dog into the water. • If your dog begins to paddle with his front legs, lift his hind legs and help him float. He should quickly catch on and keep his back end up. • Don’t let your dog overdo it; swimming is very hard work and he may tire quickly. • If swimming at the ocean, be careful of strong tides. • If you have your own pool, make sure your dog knows where the stairs or ladder are located. Be sure that pool covers are firmly in place; dogs have been known to slip in under openings in the covers and drown. • Never leave your dog unattended in water. Travel • By Air: Many airlines will not ship animals during summer months due to dangers caused by hot weather. Some will only allow dogs to fly in the early morning or in the evening. Check with your airlines for specific rules. If you do ship a dog, put icepacks or an ice blanket

in the dog’s crate. (Two-liter soft drink bottles filled with water and frozen work well.) Provide a container of fresh water, as well as a container of frozen water that will thaw over the course of the trip. • By Car: Keep your dog cool in the car by putting icepacks in his crate. Make sure the crate is well ventilated. Put a sunshade on your car windows. Bring along fresh water, a bowl and a tarp or tent so you can set up a shady spot when you stop. Keep a spray bottle filled with water to spritz on your dog to cool him down. • By RV: A dog’s safety should not depend on the air conditioning and generator systems in an RV or motor home. These devices can malfunction, with tragic results. If you leave your dog in an RV with the generator running, check it often or have a neighbor monitor it. Some manufacturers have devices that will notify you if the generator should malfunction. Never leave an RV or motor home completely shut up, even if the generator and AC are running. Crack a window or door or run the exhaust fan. Never, ever leave a dog unattended in a vehicle in the summer months. Heatstroke and death can occur within minutes in warm temperatures. Heatstroke Heatstroke can be the serious and often fatal result of a dog’s prolonged exposure to excessive heat. Below are the signs of heatstroke and the actions you should take if your dog is overcome. Early Stages: Heavy panting; rapid breathing; excessive drooling; bright red gums and tongue; or standing 4-square, posting or spreading out in an attempt to maintain balance. Advanced Stages: White or blue gums; lethargy, unwillingness to move; uncontrollable urination or defecation; labored, noisy breathing; and shock. If your dog begins to exhibit signs of heatstroke, you should immediately try to cool the dog down by: Apply rubbing alcohol to the dog’s paw pads; apply ice packs to the groin area; hose down with water; allow the dog to lick ice chips or drink a small amount of water; offer Pedialyte to restore electrolytes; and check your dog’s temperature regularly during this process. Once the dog’s temperature has stabilized at between 100 to 102 degrees, you can stop the cool-down process. If you cannot get the dog cooled down and you begin to see signs of advanced heatstroke, take the dog to the veterinarian immediately. www.akc.org

STUDENTS NOMINATE TEACHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE MOST POSITIVE INFLUENCE IN THEIR LIVES On the morning of Saturday, April 13th, over 50 Cy-Fair educators representing 15 schools were honored at a teacher appreciation brunch for their excellence in teaching. The event was sponsored by two Fairfield area congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held in their newly-completed building on Fairfield Place Drive. “This is actually the first event we’ve hosted in our new meetinghouse,” said Chris Crawford, bishop of one of the congregations. “We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to give back to those who so selflessly give every day to our most prized possessions, our children.” The program included a children’s choir, a video presentation, speakers and a brunch. Stirling D. Pack, Jr. was the keynote speaker. He told the teachers, “These young students under your care have chosen you as their outstanding teachers and mentors in all of the respective schools represented here today. We are assembled to honor you for what you do every day as teachers and administrators, making a lasting impression on their lives.” Pack noted that directing, mentoring and encouraging children to fully reach their innate potential is both a great quest and significant challenge to those who teach. Another speaker, Avery Smith, a junior at Cy-Ranch High School, said, “I invited Coach Holly Bowman because she has formed me to be a hard worker, dedicated teammate and student. She has helped me through some of my hardest classes. And as my swim coach, of course, she’s also taught me so much about swimming and being a

great coach. Both of those skills have helped me become a better swimmer and a better teacher myself when I give swim lessons to younger children.” Bowman said, “I am honored to be invited here today, especially by someone like Avery, who is a motivator to me. I feel very encouraged by what I’ve heard at this event. I’ve even received some inspiration today. I’ve actually thought of a new way to approach a current challenge by being more loving and ready to help.” Dean Fantasia, a first grader at Ault Elementary, also spoke. He chose Lillian Cunningham as his special teacher and directed all of his remarks at the podium to her. “Dean has touched my heart today,” Cunningham said. “He just said everything any teacher would love to hear! I feel appreciated and loved.” “This has been a wonderful event,” said Ashley Clayburn, Ed.D., assistant superintendent of school improvement and accountability in Cy-Fair I.S.D. She attended the brunch on behalf of Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent. “We thank you for taking the time to honor our teachers for the outstanding work they do each and every day. I know the teachers and students will remember this celebration for a long time to come!” Avery Smith summed up the collective feelings of all assembled when she concluded her talk by saying, “With my fellow students, we thank you for making the difference, for shaping our lives and for unlocking our future opportunities.”

A comparison I often make is that public educators are modern-day missionaries, helping improve the lives of children from all backgrounds. Our teachers are being asked to do more today for our students than ever and our students are leaving our schools with both a quality education and quality role models. Although the child I referenced is no longer with us, the lesson he leaves behind is a valuable one. Every child matters and we will care for each one who walks through our doors.
TEXAS SENATE PASSES HOUSE BILL 5
On Monday, May 6th, the Texas Senate unanimously passed House Bill 5! HB 5 changes the graduation plan to maintain rigor while affording Texas students more flexibility with their course selection. HB 5 also reduces the number of End-of-Course (EOC) exams needed for graduation from 15 to 5. The session is not over, but we are in the home stretch. The House and Senate must now collaborate to work out their differences. Thank you to all of you who have called, emailed and/or visited with our legislators regarding these important issues. There are still additional bills that we will be monitoring closely and we will keep you informed. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D - Superintendent of Schools
The child was only a couple weeks shy of his 10th birthday when he passed away, no longer able to fight the brain tumors and their devastating effects on his body. There are a number of ways I could describe this young man. He was bright. He was full of energy. He was an avid baseball fan. He was a full-faced smile waiting to happen. And as I sat among those celebrating his all-too-short life at his funeral last week, I couldn’t help but think of another important characteristic that defined him. He was a public school student. Before he had even turned 3, the child was receiving special education services from his local public school. The extent of his impairments required continual services from medical personnel, diagnosticians and therapists. The beauty of our public education system is that we do what is necessary for our brightest students, those who are most challenged and everything in between - no questions asked. When our students are not initially successful, we find another way to help them succeed. We do whatever it takes until their needs are met. When the child’s parents first enrolled him in school, they knew he was only expected to live until about 4 or

TEXAS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL STUDENT AUTHORS
Each year the four year olds through the eighth grade students at Texas Christian School become published authors! Students collaborated to write and illustrate their very own hardbound books. The students of Texas Christian School are celebrating the publication of their books in a big way. While writing their books, the students learned that hard work really does pays off and that writing is a lot of work. Students went through the entire process from first rough draft, many revisions and finally the publication process where they now own their very own book as the author. Texas Christian’s writing program is designed to motivate students to learn through publishing by enabling students to write, illustrate and publish fullcolor, hardbound books that they will enjoy for years. Texas Christian School is extremely proud of their student’s hard work and they look forward to many more books from their young authors.

TCS SENIOR HEADING FOR THE MARINES
Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible. Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

BEDTIME STORIES FOR KINDERGARTENERS AT CCS
It was a line-up that would have challenged any Hollywood premier including Abe Lincoln, Pinkalicious, Fancy Nancy, Pete the Cat, Cindy Moo, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and even Miss Ima Hogg. They were all at Cypress Christian School for the annual and quite famous “Bedtime Stories with Cookies and Milk” event. Current and future CCS kindergarten parents and students attended this star-studded gala for an evening of fellowship, stories and goodies. The children and parents shared many laughs as they listened to teachers read some of their favorite stories while dressed to the hilt! Even Elementary Principal Robert White joined in the fun as he became “Abe Lincoln.”

Twenty-six CCS students committed their Saturday to spend time with at-risk youth in the Houston area. They played games, performed a skit, led worship and shared a verse from 1 Timothy 4:12 with the message how God gives direction for young people to make a difference in His Kingdom by being an example in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. God really used the CCS students to make heart connections with abused and neglected youth and to share God’s love in a fun and unique way.
CYPRESS CHRISTIAN RENAISSANCE AND REFORMATION FESTIVAL
Fifth graders participated in the 2013 Cypress Christian Annual Renaissance and Reformation Festival. Students introduced their guests to historical characters such as John Wycliffe, Martin Luther and leaders of the Reformation who gave their lives to ensure the Bible was available to all. In addition, students told visitors about famous scientists such as Isaac Newton, Copernicus, Pascal and Galileo. Guests enjoyed learning details about people and events who invested their lives to ensure that all have access to truth and knowledge.

CCS WARRIOR TRAVIS CHAFFIN PASSES AWAY
CCS Warrior Travis Chaffin passed away on Saturday, May 4th. Travis was a junior at CCS, a great friend to his classmates, an excellent student, a standout member of the baseball team and a godly role model for his friends and family members. Travis was always thinking about others and how he could serve them. His personal goal was to always honor the Lord in his actions. Travis wrote these words not long before his passing...”I want to be a role model for others. I want my actions in school, on the baseball field and elsewhere to display Christ in my life.” In his time at CCS, Travis did indeed touch many lives with the love of Christ. He placed his trust and hope in Jesus Christ and while we grieve his loss, we are comforted in knowing he is now safely home with his Lord. On Sunday, May 5th, the CCS gym was filled with over 500 people as CCS students and families came together with the Chaffin family to meet, to grieve, to pray and to comfort each other. On Monday morning, the school day began with a special assembly for secondary students in remembrance of Travis. Students were reminded that through Jesus Christ, while we grieve, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. Instead, we can find the strength to continue, even while we process the loss of such a treasured friend.

COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Corners Service Unit held a Bridging ceremony on May 2nd. Family and friends were present as members of twelve different troops made the change to their next Girl Scouting level. The evening began with a flag ceremony and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Girl Scout Promise. When each troop came forward, their leaders spoke about the troop’s activities and service projects for the year to the applause of the audience. As each girl’s name was called, she walked across a wooden bridge to be greeted by a sister Girl Scout from her new level. Many of the girls wore their new vests or sashes for the first time. Daisy troops bridging to Brownies were troops 16048, 16171, 16460, 16462, 16465 and 16467. Brownie troops bridging to the Junior level were troops 16407 and 16320. National Lemonade Day on May 5th was a troop effort for 16100. They held their troop lemonade stand at a local Kroger. The day is designed to “teach kids the business of business” and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit. Selling Girl Scout cookies also helps develop many business skills. Troop 16464 participated in Geocache at Sheldon Lake State Park. While summer may slow the activities of individual troops, many Girl Scouts participate in resident, day and twilight camps. There are many opportunities to learn new skills and make new friends and it is not too late to sign up! Camp information (and lots of other information!) can be found on the Council website, www.gssjc.org.

Girl Scouts from the Copper Corners Service Unit have been participating in a variety of activities. Brownie troop (now Junior troop) 16320 presented an Earth Day program for our service unit. Troop 16398 reports that they “had a blast” when they visited “Color Me Mine” in Cypress. They would like to thank Wren Hartley for making the day so special. Menchie’s has been a popular destination for field trips. Troops 16172 and 16109 were recent visitors. Troop 16109 discovered that 11 girls could fit in a Menchie’s freezer…they can really claim to have had a “cool” time!

The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@ gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK PROVIDES FREE COUNSELING TO TROOPS AND FAMILIES
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling. com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY RELAY FOR LIFE CY FAIR
We held an All Night walk on April 26, 2013 at Cy-Falls High School. There were 62 teams, with a total of 1,200+ participants, raising $130,000 thus far. The event is made up of teams who set up camp all night to walk. We raise money all year and end with a “carnival type” atmosphere with the profits going to the American Cancer Society. We start the event with the first lap to honor our survivors and their caregivers. We then transition into a luminary lighting ceremony at 9:30 PM where luminary bags are lit and the lights turned out to remember all of those whom we have lost to cancer. We walk all night with music, games, booths, dancing and just plain fun to keep the energy going. We end with a closing ceremony at 7 AM and release balloons in the air at sunrise. It is a beautiful way to “give back” in our fight against cancer. For more information on how to get involved, call Tory DeArmond at 713-2052850. I lost my husband recently to cancer and am doing my part as a volunteer to “make a difference!” Relay For Life Cy-Fair is my choice! The money we raise provides research to fight cancer, free rides to and from chemo/radiation treatment, 24-hour 800 line support, the new HOPE Lodge being built in the medical center to house families of patients going through treatment and so much more! NOTE: We are continuing to raise money. If you anyone is interested in donating, please visit our website at www.relayforlife.org/cyfairtx.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
