HIT THE BRAKES…

Speeding in Lone Oak has been a hot topic of discussion lately. There have been numerous reports of speeding and of running stop signs. We have notified the Sheriff of these reports and have asked that tickets be issued to offenders. Several surrounding schools and residents have purchased kid alert safety signs to be placed in front of their homes and or buildings to remind people to slow down. If you would like to purchase a safety sign, here are a couple websites that sell the signs, www.kaplantoys.com and www. discountschoolsupply.com

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Lone Oak Homeowners Association (HOA) Board encourages all Lone Oak residents to let us know if you would like to post information for the community to read. You may send your articles and or information to Mary Warren at MaryW365@aol.com

LONE OAK CRIME WATCH NEEDS YOUR HELP

Lone Oak’s Crime Watch Chairperson would like to encourage more residents to become involved in the Lone Oak Crime Watch Program. More Block Captains are needed! Each Block Captain is responsible for contacting the residents who are assigned to them when there is information to pass along regarding incidents in Lone Oak or surrounding areas. Most Block Captains set up their distribution list via email, so it is important for residents to know who their Block Captain is. The time required is minimal - attend a few periodic meetings, distribute information, be aware of happenings in your neighborhood and host a National Night Out Party once a year! If you would like to volunteer or would just like more information, please contact your Board.

SUMMER MEANS SWIM TIME

Summer is almost here, which means pools will be opening for the summer. Please take time to review water safety with your children before they even enter the pool. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children age 14 and under. Believe it or not, the majority of children who drown do so in residential swimming pools while being cared for by one or both parents. In the time it takes you to run into the house to answer the phone, your child could drown - in as little as one inch of water. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you not install swimming pools at all until your children are over 5 years of age. If you do have a pool, install a four-sided fence, about 5 feet high, with a self-closing latch that’s out of the reach of children. In open bodies of water and on boats, always use personal flotation devices, making sure that they fit properly. But floats and swimming lessons often give parents a false sense of security; they’re no replacement for supervision. At community pools, do not solely lean on the lifeguards to supervise your children. You are your child’s best safety net. Keep an eye on your children, learn CPR and keep a telephone with emergency numbers near the pool.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE

Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.

Lone Oak

Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

TEXAS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NEWS

TEXAS CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS TEAM WINS 3RD IN STATE! Elisa Kendall, Afton Otwell and Bao Truong qualified to play in the TAPPS State Tennis Competition on April 24th – 25th in Waco, TX. Elisa Kendall won the 1A State Title, while Afton Otwell and Bao Truong tied for 5th place in each of their divisions. The combined points earned by Elisa and Afton allowed Texas Christian High School to place 3rd over all in the 1A Girls Division. TCS could not be more proud of the team’s accomplishment! Way to go Tigers!!!

TCS STUDENT AUTHORS Each year the four year olds through the eighth grade students at Texas Christian School become published authors! Students collaborated to write and illustrate their very own hardbound books. The students of Texas Christian School are celebrating the publication of their books in a big way. While writing their books, the students learned that hard work really does pays off and that writing is a lot of work. Students went through the entire process from first rough draft, many revisions and finally the publication process where they now own their very own book as the author. Texas Christian’s writing program is designed to motivate students to learn through publishing by enabling students to write, illustrate and publish full-color, hardbound books that they will enjoy for years. Texas Christian School is extremely proud of their student’s hard work and they look forward to many more books from their young authors.

TCS SENIOR HEADING FOR THE MARINES Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United

FREDDY’S PAINTING

Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NEWS BEDTIME STORIES FOR KINDERGARTENERS AT CCS It was a line-up that would have challenged any Hollywood premier including Abe Lincoln, Pinkalicious, Fancy Nancy, Pete the Cat, Cindy Moo, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and even Miss Ima Hogg. They were all at Cypress Christian School for the annual and quite famous “Bedtime Stories with Cookies and Milk” event. Current and future CCS kindergarten parents and students attended this star-studded gala for an evening of fellowship, stories and goodies. The children and parents shared many laughs as they listened to teachers read some of their favorite stories while dressed to the hilt! Even Elementary Principal Robert White joined in the fun as he became “Abe Lincoln.”

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN STUDENTS SERVE AT-RISK YOUTH Twenty-six CCS students committed their Saturday to spend time with at-risk youth in the Houston area. They played games, performed a skit, led worship and shared a verse from 1 Timothy 4:12 with the message how God gives direction for young people to make a difference in His Kingdom by being an

example in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. God really used the CCS students to make heart connections with abused and neglected youth and to share God’s love in a fun and unique way.

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN RENAISSANCE AND REFORMATION FESTIVAL Fifth graders participated in the 2013 Cypress Christian Annual Renaissance and Reformation Festival. Students introduced their guests to historical characters such as John Wycliffe, Martin Luther and leaders of the Reformation who gave their lives to ensure the Bible was available to all. In addition, students told visitors about famous scientists such as Isaac Newton, Copernicus, Pascal and Galileo. Guests enjoyed learning details about people and events who invested their lives to ensure that all have access to truth and knowledge. CCS WARRIOR TRAVIS CHAFFIN PASSES AWAY CCS Warrior Travis Chaffin passed away on Saturday, May 4th. Travis was a junior at CCS, a great friend to his classmates, an excellent student, a standout member of the baseball team and a godly role model for his friends

and family members. Travis was always thinking about others and how he could serve them. His personal goal was to always honor the Lord in his actions. Travis wrote these words not long before his passing...”I want to be a role model for others. I want my actions in school, on the baseball field and elsewhere to display Christ in my life.” In his time at CCS, Travis did indeed touch many lives with the love of Christ. He placed his trust and hope in Jesus Christ and while we grieve his loss, we are comforted in knowing he is now safely home with his Lord. On Sunday, May 5th, the CCS gym was filled with over 500 people as CCS students and families came together with the Chaffin family to meet, to grieve, to pray and to comfort each other. On Monday morning, the school day began with a special assembly for secondary students in remembrance of Travis. Students were reminded that through Jesus Christ, while we grieve, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. Instead, we can find the strength to continue, even while we process the loss of such a treasured friend.

On the morning of Saturday, April 13th, over 50 Cy-Fair educators representing 15 schools were honored at a teacher appreciation brunch for their excellence in teaching. The event was sponsored by two Fairfield area congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held in their newly-completed building on Fairfield Place Drive. “This is actually the first event we’ve hosted in our new meetinghouse,” said Chris Crawford, bishop of one of the congregations. “We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to give back to those who so selflessly give every day to our most prized possessions, our children.” The program included a children’s choir, a video presentation, speakers and a brunch.

Stirling D. Pack, Jr. was the keynote speaker. He told the teachers, “These young students under your care have chosen you as their outstanding teachers and mentors in all of the respective schools represented here today. We are assembled to honor you for what you do every day as teachers and administrators, making a lasting impression on their lives.” Pack noted that directing, mentoring and encouraging children to fully reach their innate potential is both a great quest and significant challenge to those who teach. Another speaker, Avery Smith, a junior at Cy-Ranch High School, said, “I invited Coach Holly Bowman because she has formed me to be a hard worker, dedicated teammate and student. She has helped me through some of my hardest classes. And as my swim coach, of course, she’s also taught me so much about swimming and being a great coach. Both of those skills have helped me become a better swimmer and a better teacher myself when I give swim lessons to younger children.”

Lone Oak

Bowman said, “I am honored to be invited here today, especially by someone like Avery, who is a motivator to me. I feel very encouraged by what I’ve heard at this event. I’ve even received some inspiration today. I’ve actually thought of a new way to approach a current challenge by being more loving and ready to help.” Dean Fantasia, a first grader at Ault Elementary, also spoke. He chose Lillian Cunningham as his special teacher and directed all of his remarks at the podium to her. “Dean has touched my heart today,” Cunningham said. “He just said everything any teacher would love to hear! I feel appreciated and loved.” “This has been a wonderful event,” said Ashley Clayburn, Ed.D., assistant superintendent of school improvement and accountability in Cy-Fair I.S.D. She attended the brunch on behalf of Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent. “We thank you for taking the time to honor our teachers for the outstanding work they do each and every day. I know the teachers and students will remember this celebration for a long time to come!” Avery Smith summed up the collective feelings of all assembled when she concluded her talk by saying, “With my fellow students, we thank you for making the difference, for shaping our lives and for unlocking our future opportunities.”

MESSAGES FROM THE SUPERINTENDANT EVERY CHILD MATTERS

The child was only a couple weeks shy of his 10th birthday when he passed away, no longer able to fight the brain tumors and their devastating effects on his body.

Lone Oak

There are a number of ways I could describe this young man. He was bright. He was full of energy. He was an avid baseball fan. He was a full-faced smile waiting to happen. And as I sat among those celebrating his all-too-short life at his funeral last week, I couldn’t help but think of another important characteristic that defined him. He was a public school student. Before he had even turned 3, the child was receiving special education services from his local public school. The extent of his impairments required continual services from medical personnel, diagnosticians and therapists. The beauty of our public education system is that we do what is necessary for our brightest students, those who are most challenged and everything in between - no questions asked. When our students are not initially successful, we find another way to help them succeed. We do whatever it takes until their needs are met. When the child’s parents first enrolled him in school, they knew he was only expected to live until about 4 or 5 years of age. Even so, the school only sought ways to make his life better. The excellent care, support and love he received from public educators allowed this young man to bless those around him for four more great years. A comparison I often make is that public educators are modern-day missionaries, helping improve the lives of children from all backgrounds. Our teachers are being asked to do more today for our students than ever and our students are leaving our schools with both a quality education and quality role models. Although the child I referenced is no longer with us, the lesson he leaves behind is a valuable one. Every child matters and we will care for each one who walks through our doors.

TEXAS SENATE PASSES HOUSE BILL 5 On Monday, May 6th, the Texas Senate unanimously passed House Bill 5! HB 5 changes the graduation plan to maintain rigor while affording Texas students more flexibility with their course selection. HB 5 also reduces the number of End-of-Course (EOC) exams needed for graduation from 15 to 5. The session is not over, but we are in the home stretch. The House and Senate must now collaborate to work out their differences. Thank you to all of you who have called, emailed and/or visited with our legislators regarding these important issues. There are still additional bills that we will be monitoring closely and we will keep you informed. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D Superintendent of Schools

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.

Open Doors

The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.

Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment they receive from helping others. The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to attend a volunteer tour and orientation by calling Tara Rauch 281-955-7683 or email at tarar@cypressassistance.org. For a description of the services provided at Cypress Assistance Ministries, Food Pantry requests, and a detailed description of volunteer opportunities, please see our web site, www.cypressassistance.org.

According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. What volunteers can do to show that they care is everything from providing caregiver relief, being the friendly visitor with the smile, holding someone’s hand, providing that extra loving care and being a good listener. Volunteering can include music or pet therapy and much much more. All those interested in volunteering, please contact Adrienne Harris at adharris@odyshealth.com or 281-463-3697 (VistaCare).
