HOME IMPROVEMENT – ACC APPLICATION
The Architectural Control Committee would like to remind you that approval is needed before you begin an exterior project or change to your home. This includes exterior painting, new roofs, fences, pools, basketball goals, etc. With your completed ACC form, please note what is needed for your type of improvement such as, photos, paint samples, solar screen samples, drawings, brochure, lot survey and your signature. If these items are not submitted with your application, your request is denied and returned to you for completion. Please read the application carefully. • A lot survey is an architectural drawing of your property showing your home, easements and building lines. A copy usually comes with your closing papers.
• Please show on the survey in a distinguishable color, other than black ink, the location of your project. • Faxed pictures come across as a solid black picture, so please mail or email pictures. Faxed pictures cannot be used. You will be notified by letter after the ACC committee has made a decision. They have at least 30 days to review and respond to your application. You will find an ACC form at www.crest-management.com or you may contact Sam Simmons at Crest Management at 281-579-0761, ext. 630 for more details.
NEIGHBORLY REMINDER
This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard - for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!
SUMMER MEANS SWIM TIME
Summer is almost here, which means pools will be opening for the summer. Please take time to review water safety with your children before they even enter the pool.

Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children age 14 and under. Believe it or not, the majority of children who drown do so in residential swimming pools while being cared for by one or both parents. In the time it takes you to run into the house to answer the phone, your child could drown - in as little as one inch of water. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you not install swimming pools at all until your children are over 5 years of age. If you do have a pool, install a four-sided fence, about 5 feet high, with a self-closing latch that’s out of the reach of children. In open bodies of water and on boats, always use personal flotation devices, making sure that they fit properly. But floats and swimming lessons often give parents a false sense of security; they’re no replacement for supervision. At community pools, do not solely lean on the lifeguards to supervise your children. You are your child’s best safety net. Keep an eye on your children, learn CPR and keep a telephone with emergency numbers near the pool.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
281-463-4982
Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

IMPORTANT DATES June 5th - Last day of school!
CY-FAIR EDUCATORS HONORED AT TEACHER APPRECIATION EVENT IN FAIRFIELD
Students nominate teachers who have had the most positive influence in their lives. On the morning of Saturday, April 13th, over 50 Cy-Fair educators representing 15 schools were honored at a teacher appreciation brunch for their excellence in teaching. The event was sponsored by two Fairfield area congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held in their newly-completed building on Fairfield Place Drive. “This is actually the first event we’ve hosted in our new meetinghouse,” said Chris Crawford, bishop of one of the congregations. “We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to give back to those who so selflessly give every day to our most prized possessions, our children.” The program included a children’s choir, a video presentation, speakers and a brunch. Stirling D. Pack, Jr. was the keynote speaker. He told the teachers, “These young students under your care have chosen you as their outstanding teachers and mentors in all of the respective schools represented here today.
Villages of Cypress Lakes West
We are assembled to honor you for what you do every day as teachers and administrators, making a lasting impression on their lives.” Pack noted that directing, mentoring and encouraging children to fully reach their innate potential is both a great quest and significant challenge to those who teach. Another speaker, Avery Smith, a junior at Cy-Ranch High School, said, “I invited Coach Holly Bowman because she has formed me to be a hard worker, dedicated teammate and student. She has helped me through some of my hardest classes. And as my swim coach, of course, she’s also taught me so much about swimming and being a great coach. Both of those skills have helped me become a better swimmer and a better teacher myself when I give swim lessons to younger children.” Bowman said, “I am honored to be invited here today, especially by someone like Avery, who is a motivator to me. I feel very encouraged by what I’ve heard at this event. I’ve even received some inspiration today. I’ve actually thought of a new way to approach a current challenge by being more loving and ready to help.” Dean Fantasia, a first grader at Ault Elementary, also spoke. He chose Lillian Cunningham as his special teacher and directed all of his remarks at the podium to her. “Dean has touched my heart today,” Cunningham said. “He just said everything any teacher would love to hear! I feel appreciated and loved.” “This has been a wonderful event,” said Ashley Clayburn, Ed.D., assistant superintendent of school improvement and accountability in Cy-Fair I.S.D. She attended the brunch on behalf of Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent. “We thank you for taking the time to honor our teachers for the outstanding work they do each and every day. I know the teachers and students will remember this celebration for a long time to come!”

MESSAGES FROM THE SUPERINTENDANT EVERY CHILD MATTERS
The child was only a couple weeks shy of his 10th birthday when he passed away, no longer able to fight the brain tumors and their devastating effects on his body. There are a number of ways I could describe this young man. He was bright. He was full of energy. He was an avid baseball fan. He was a full-faced smile waiting to happen. And as I sat among those celebrating his all-too-short life at his funeral last week, I couldn’t help but think of another important characteristic that defined him. He was a public school student. Before he had even turned 3, the child was receiving special education services from his local public school. The extent of his impairments required continual services from medical personnel, diagnosticians and therapists. The beauty of our public education system is that we do what is necessary for our brightest students, those who are most challenged and everything in between - no questions asked. When our students are not initially successful, we find another way to help them succeed. We do whatever it takes until their needs are met. When the child’s parents first enrolled him in school, they knew he was only expected to live until about 4 or 5 years of age. Even so, the school only sought ways to make his life better. The excellent care, support and love

he received from public educators allowed this young man to bless those around him for four more great years. A comparison I often make is that public educators are modern-day missionaries, helping improve the lives of children from all backgrounds. Our teachers are being asked to do more today for our students than ever and our students are leaving our schools with both a quality education and quality role models. Although the child I referenced is no longer with us, the lesson he leaves behind is a valuable one. Every child matters and we will care for each one who walks through our doors. TEXAS SENATE PASSES HOUSE BILL 5 On Monday, May 6th, the Texas Senate unanimously passed House Bill 5! HB 5 changes the graduation plan to maintain rigor while affording Texas students more flexibility with their course selection. HB 5 also reduces the number of End-of-Course (EOC) exams needed for graduation from 15 to 5. The session is not over, but we are in the home stretch. The House and Senate must now collaborate to work out their differences. Thank you to all of you who have called, emailed and/or visited with our legislators regarding these important issues. There are still additional bills that we will be monitoring closely and we will keep you informed. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D, Superintendent of Schools
PASS IN REVIEW

CYPRESS RANCH KEY CLUB AIDS WEST, TEXAS
When Cypress Ranch Key Club members heard about the devastation that rocked the West, Texas community on April 17th, they immediately wanted to help. After some investigation, the club learned that several of the schools in the West school district were damaged following the cement plant explosion. Key Club officers decided that the best way our club could help was through a Wal-Mart gift card drive. Contact was made with officials of the West school district and they confirmed that many of the items they would need to restore normalcy to their schools could be purchased at Wal-Mart. The gift card drive lasted just a week and a half, but Key Club members definitely had time to purchase a gift card in support of the West ISD schools and students. Club members donated 110 gift cards, totaling an amazing $2,215. The gift cards have been delivered to the West school district. The Cypress Ranch Key Club hopes that the donation will be helpful in the huge job facing the citizens of West following the horrible tragedy they have faced. The Cypress Ranch Key Club actively works to support those in need in our community and world and volunteers with most charities in the Houston area. If you have any questions about Cypress Ranch Key Club, please contact Faculty Advisor Jennifer Hydes at jennifer.hydes@cfisd.net.

CYPRESS RANCH SENIORS EARN KEY CLUB GRADUATION STOLES
Forty-three Cypress Ranch senior Key Club members have earned the right to wear a Key Club stole at graduation. The stoles were presented to the seniors at the club’s recent Awards and Installation Banquet. They were presented by Key Club Faculty Advisors and senior English teachers Katie Lauver and Diane Reitmyer. Senior Sara Gates who serves as one of the club’s Vice President this year said, “I know that it is such an honor to receive this stole. It wasn’t just given out; it was earned.” Key Club seniors had to meet the following requirements to wear a graduation stole: • Be an active club member for at least one and a half years, including the entire senior year. • Serve as “Senior in Charge” at an event. • Write an essay about their Key Club membership experience. The Cypress Ranch Key Club actively volunteers in the Cypress community and Cy-Fair schools. For more information about the award-winning Key Club, visit the club’s website at www.ranchkey.com. At the end of the one-week cap drive, the club had collected nearly 250 caps. The caps were delivered to the Cy-Fair Vipers baseball team, who delivered them to Texas Children’s Hospital. The Vipers had collected over 250 caps on their own. Together, over 500 caps were donated through a joint effort of the Ranch Key Club and the Cy-Fair Vipers.

MILDRED’S
UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www. mildredsumbrella.com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.
