PICK UP YOUR DOG’S WASTE

When walking your dog, please do not allow them to walk in people’s yards. In the event your dog does wander onto someone’s property and uses the bathroom please pick up all of the waste. A single gram (about the size of a dime) of dog feces contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria. Dog feces may harbor dangerous bacteria and viruses such as: whipworms, roundworms, tapeworms, parvo, giardiasis, salmonellosis and cryptosporidiosis. Pet waste is not fertilizer. It actually kills plants and grasses. Improperly disposed of or left unchecked, dog waste pollutes our environment and can even filter into our water supply. Uncollected dog waste that washes into streams and storm drains is the #3 contributor to water contamination. Pick up your dog’s waste. Not only will it help the environment, but it will ensure you and your dog a clean and safe area to enjoy together!

CINCO RANCH LOST AND FOUND PETS NETWORKING VOLUNTEERS & SHORT-TERM FOSTERS NEEDED

With over 8,700 homes in Cinco Ranch, we need volunteers from each “neighborhood” to receive email blasts for lost and found pets in our community. Would you be willing to receive occasional emails when there is a lost or found pet in your area? We need additional caring, animal-friendly neighbors to help us network to get them back home quickly. If you would like to help reunite lost and found pets with their grateful families, please send your name and contact information to our volunteer coordinator at paigeh618@hotmail.com

2

July 2013

**Also, please get a registered microchip implant for your pets through your vet and make sure they have on collars and tags with contact information to quickly get them back home safely. If you find a lost pet, always contact us FIRST by email at: LostAndFound@CincoRanchLife.org, so we can help with securing a place for a short term foster until the owner is located or they are placed into rescue.

PARKING IN THE STREET

Did you know it is against Cinco Ranch Covenants for residents to park in the street (Article XII, Section 2(a))? Additionally, when a number of vehicles park in the street, emergency vehicles have a difficult task maneuvering down the street. Due to the size and clearance needs of these emergency vehicles, a street lined with parked cars obstructs the passage and delays response time. While it is understood that during certain events, vehicles parking on the street is an unavoidable circumstance, please be aware of clearance needed for traffic. Ask your guests to park their car as close to curb as possible and not line both sides of the street. Be a courteous neighbor by communicating you are having a gathering at your home and may need additional parking. Ask if they would mind guests parking in front of their homes to help eliminate the congestion on the street. Remember, parking on the street for residents is prohibited and can impact the ability of emergency services to reach you or a neighbor in an emergency. Your cooperation will ensure Cinco Ranch retains its reputation as the premiere area to live in.

All Recreation Facilities are open to both Cinco and Cinco Southwest Residents. This includes pools, tennis courts, parks, hike and bike trails and the Lake House Recreation Facility. There are charges for renting some of the facilities.

HELP KEEP OUR LIGHTS ON

Members must purchase their Pool Key Cards from their appropriate Management Company. If you live east of Katy Gaston Road, you are in the Cinco Association and can purchase your Pool Key Cards at 3022 Windemere Park Lane. If you live west of Katy Gaston Road, you are in the Cinco Southwest Association and can purchase your Pool Key Cards at the Lake House at 25202 Springwood Lake Drive.

If you make tennis reservations and decide that you cannot play, please go online and cancel your reservations. This will ensure that the courts will be open for other residents to then reserve the courts. Thank you.

Cinco Ranch Residents pay a maintenance fee where a large portion includes the electricity to light our streets. Each streetlight costs the Cinco Ranch Associations approximately $30 dollars a month. This fee is billed to us whether the light is working or not. If you see a light(s) burned out, please help us by getting the number on the pole. You may submit the work order to Centerpoint Energy or report it to the Associations Office. To report the outage yourself you will either fill out the form available at: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage or you can call the information into Centerpoint Energy at 713-207-2222. The electronic form is much faster as you won’t be put on “hold.” You can also report dim lights, leaning poles, etc. on the electronic form. Copy the email to the Cinco Ranch Residential Office at: CincoRanchCustomerCare@pcmi-us.com so we can keep the list of lights reported.

CINCO AND CINCO SOUTHWEST SHARED USE AGREEMENT

Cinco has 9 pools available during the swim season. Starting in April, the Greenway Village pool will open. This pool stays open through the end of October. Cinco Southwest has two pools - The Lake House Pool and the Rosewood Pool. All of these pools are available for use by both Cinco and Cinco Southwest Residents.

FT. BEND COUNTY - LEASH LAW

Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program

The shared use agreement was signed in October of 2009 through the end of 2013. At that time, the shared use agreement will be reviewed.

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies.

HELP AVOID POWER OUTAGES IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Do you have a transformer in your yard? If you do, please do not directly surround it with mulch or dirt. Transformers must have the sides exposed so they can cool properly. Otherwise they will over heat and burn out. Also, the sides of a transformer can rust through due to mulch holding moisture against them. Please do your part and clear the area around transformers in your yard.

WHO DO I CALL?

• Street Light Outages - Report to CenterPoint Energy via their website, thereby eliminating a lot of “hold time” on the phone. The website address is: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage. Give them as much information as possible, including the address and/or pole number. If you prefer to call, the number is 713-207-2222. • Street sign or stop sign down or missing - Please contact the county. Bend County, call Road & Bridge at 800690-ROAD (800-690-7623) and if you are in Harris County, you can call 281463-8703 for Service Requests & Road Maintenance. If you see any curbs needing repair around the islands in the Cul de Sac or along the boulevards, please call and report these, too. If you live in a gated section, the streets and curbs are maintained by the Association with funds from the separate assessment billed annually. On a related note, the driveway “apron” is the responsibility of the individual property owner, no matter who maintains your street. Also, the sidewalks adjoining residential lots are the responsibility of the owner. The association maintains sidewalks in common areas only. • Leaking fire hydrants or storm drain problems - Please contact your

DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!

Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake. Thank you for your consideration and attention. - Management

Two phone numbers suggested you save in your cell phone are the nonemergency Harris County Precinct 5 Constables and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s numbers. 911 should always be used in case of an emergency, but many times we need to contact the Sheriff’s Department and need to do so quickly. Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff’s Department if something in your neighborhood seems questionable. This will give our contract deputies probable cause to investigate. This would include suspicious vehicles (vehicles exhibiting unsafe or erratic driving behavior), suspicious persons or behavior, activity at you neighbors home when you know they are on vacation and anything else that may be out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. PROTECT STORM DRAINS

Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of $5,000 for each offense.

CINCO MUD 8 SAYS SPRUCE UP YOUR SPRINKLER SYSTEM AND SAVE

It’s been a long, hard winter for your yard. While your plants go dormant to cope with the colder weather, your sprinkler system can feel the effects of winter, too. Cracks in the pipes can lead to costly leaks and broken sprinkler heads can waste water and money. You could be losing up to 25,000 gallons of water and more than $90 over a six-month irrigation season - the cost of about 300 daffodil bulbs! Now is the perfect time to spruce up your irrigation system before you ramp up your watering efforts this spring and summer. To get started, follow these four simple steps - inspect, connect, direct and select: • Inspect. Check your system for clogged, broken or missing sprinkler heads. If you’re not the do-it-yourself type, go with a pro - look for an irrigation professional certified through a WaterSense labeled irrigation program. • Connect. Examine points where the sprinkler heads connect to pipes/ hoses. If water is pooling in your landscape or you have large wet areas, you could have a leak in your system. A leak as small as the tip of a ballpoint pen (1/32nd of an inch) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month. • Direct. Are you watering the driveway, house or sidewalk instead of your yard? Redirect sprinklers to apply water only to your lawn or prized plants. • Select. An improperly scheduled irrigation controller can waste a lot of water and money. Update your system’s schedule with the seasons or select a WaterSense labeled controller to take the guesswork out of scheduling. Don’t forget to add “sprinkler spruce-up” to your spring cleaning list this year. Learn more about maintaining a water-smart yard by visiting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense website at www.epa.gov/ watersense/outdoor. See www.cincomud8.com/documents.html for REBATE information.

FORMATION OF SENIOR CITIZEN TENNIS CLUB AND VOLLEYBALL CLUB

We are looking for active Senior Citizens interested in forming a Tennis Club and a Sand Volley Ball Club to be played at the beach club (Between Peek/ Mason and Cinco Ranch Blvd./Westheimer Park). If interested, call 713298-4030. The purpose is to keep ACTIVE and FLEXIBLE in declining ages rather than to play a professional game.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients - remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible. Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

OKE WHEELCHAIR SWING RIBBON CUTTING

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Thursday, May 22nd at 4 PM at Odessa Kilpatrick Elementary in KISD to celebrate a wheelchair swing permanently installed on the playground. We are proud to offer total inclusion inside and outside to all our children. OKE is the first and only school at this time to have a permanent wheelchair swing outside on the school playground. The kids love it. The swing has been a huge motivator for our special needs students to work harder in the classroom. We have seen the students do things we were not sure possible all because they want their swing time. The vestibular system is awakened and the results are remarkable, as we have seen here at OKE. Over stimulated children might relax on the swing while an under stimulated child might seek out a feeling of excitement.

We can all remember enjoying the swing while growing up. However, for a special needs child, swinging is not only an activity that he/she enjoys, it is helping our students develop harder work habits and develops relationships with their peers. Children with disabilities can now have as much fun on the swings as their able bodied friends. No more sitting on the edge of the playground and wondering what it would be like to fly through the air and feel the breeze on their faces. Childhood has many challenges and these challenges are even greater when a child has a disability. Recognizing the opportunity we have to make a positive difference in our school environment, including outside on the playground the OKE mission of, “You’ve got a friend in me!” has allowed us to make a difference in all our settings at OKE.

Join us for Summer Fun!

When classes returned to the playground after summer break they were surprised to see a new piece of equipment on the playground. When we brought our children in wheel chairs outside all the kids flocked to the new swing. What is that? How does it work? Who gets to use it? Were some of the questions that flooded the teachers right away. The excitement was unbelievable. As we showed them how the swing worked they became very excited and cheered, “now everyone has something they can do on the playground.” It was so heartwarming. We thank the many donors it took to achieve this goal. OKE is also one of the few schools here in KISD to offer a Special Buddies program. The program was founded by Monica McDivitt in 2007. OKE put the program into place in 2010. Our vision is to create an environment where differences are accepted and attempts are made to educate those whom may be fearful or unaware in the relation to the culture of disability. We teach all children to embrace differences and become caring friends. If we empower our children to make this choice, then we install the values of honesty, responsibility, diversity, respect and social interaction. Our goals of the program are to eliminate any fears or misconceptions that children who do not have disabilities might have about children with disabilities. To help all children learn that everyone has strengths, abilities, hopes and dreams and that they each have something special to contribute to our school and community. With the new swing in place, our students now have a new and fun way to interact with each other. We would LOVE to have you join us!!!

As the junior division first runner-up, Garg traveled with his father and his teacher to Orlando, FL, for an expenses-paid awards trip, along with the other three DuPont Challenge winners. The trip included a stay at The Walt Disney World Resort and a visit to the NASA Kennedy Space Center. Garg also received a $3,000 U.S. Savings Bond and materials from Britannica Digital Learning and NBC Learn. The DuPont Challenge was created in 1986, in honor of heroic men and women lost in the Challenger space shuttle disaster of that year. Scouts GORDON ROSEL EARNS EAGLE AWARD

Gordon Rosel, 18, of Katy, has earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts. Rosel was recognized in ceremonies on Sunday, April 29, 2013 at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Katy. He earned the rank of Eagle on February 27, 2013. A member of Troop 209, chartered by St. Peter’s Methodist Church, Rosel is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a service project that benefits a non-profit organization or the community. To earn his Eagle, Rosel developed a Land Navigation Course in George Bush Park that benefits the National Guard Armory, the Boy Scouts and the general public. Rosel began scouting in kindergarten in Cub Scout Pack 443. As a Cub, he earned ranks of Tiger, Wolf and Webelos. When asked what was the most difficult badge to earn he stated; “It was the rock climbing, because I didn’t know how to tie all those knots.” His favorite activity was camping (with over 100 nights of overnight camping to his credit) and admits his favorite camping staple is Pop-Tarts. Gordon received the Triple Crown last summer

Cinco Ranch II

by completing all three national high-adventure bases operated by the Boy Scouts of American (Northern Tier in Minnesota and Canada, Philmont in New Mexico and Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys). Rosel has been a member of the swim and football teams, as well as the FFA at Faith West Academy, where he is a senior. In the fall, Rosel plans to attend Sam Houston University to major in Criminal Justice. He was inspired by Scoutmaster Drew Young, a scoutmaster of Troop 209, who is on Houston’s bomb squad. Rosel wants to one day be on the SWAT, because “I see a need for justice and this where I am suppose to go,” he said.

Theater, Arts & Music MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder,’ arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery.

Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.
