July 2013 A POOL IS COOL, BUT ONLY WHEN IT’S SAFE

Pools make for great summer fun, but they can be an accident waiting to happen. Pools are a great way to beat the heat, but they can be dangerous. Drowning and waterborne infections are threats for adults and children alike. To make sure your memories of pools are happy ones, follow these tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Make safety a priority. It’s easier than you might think for someone - especially a child - to accidentally fall into a pool. Children can also quietly make their way to a pool before anyone knows they’re missing. If you have a pool on your property, take these precautions: • Completely surround the pool with walls or fences that are at least 5 feet high. Make sure gates are self-closing, self-latching and out of small children’s reach. • If your house makes up the barrier of one side of the pool, equip doors leading from the house with an alarm that will sound if the door is unexpectedly opened. • For above-ground pools, secure or remove steps or ladders when the pool isn’t in use. • Consider using a power safety cover. The cover is a motor-powered barrier that can be placed over the water when the pool isn’t in use. • Think about a pool alarm. The CPSC recommends an underwater alarm, which detects movement under the water, with remote receivers placed inside the house. Take extra precautions with children. Learning to swim is always a good idea, but according to the AAP, children aren’t developmentally ready for swimming lessons until at least age 4. Even then, swimming lessons don’t guarantee a child will be safe in the water. Keep these points in mind concerning pools and children: • Never leave a child alone in a pool, even for a moment. • Avoid air-filled “swimming aids,” such as water wings. They can give children a false sense of security. • Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren’t tempted to reach for them. • Protect your child from sunburn by applying a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Reapply after swimming. • Make sure an adult is always within arm’s length whenever an infant or toddler is in the water. • If a child is missing, always check the pool first. Seconds count when a child has fallen in the water. Be prepared for an emergency. Ideally, no one will have a problem in your pool. But if they do, you need to be ready. • Keep rescue equipment, such as a shepherd’s hook (a long pole with a hook on the end of it) and a life preserver near the pool. • Make sure a telephone is at the pool when the pool is in use.

Child Safe • Pet Safe Lawn & Plant Safe

• Make sure you or other adults watching young children in the pool know CPR and can rescue a child if necessary. Guard against infection. A pool is basically a bath that a lot of people share at once. As a result, germs can easily be transmitted, especially through fecal matter. While chlorine kills most germs, it can’t kill all of them. Some precautions are necessary. • Don’t get in the water if you have diarrhea. • Never swallow pool water. • Wash your hands and bottom and those of your child, thoroughly with soap and water after having a bowel movement. • Take your child to the toilet for bathroom breaks often. • Change diapers in a bathroom, not near the pool. Germs can contaminate surfaces in and near the water. Have fun! Just a few safety precautions can mean the difference between a refreshing way to spend the day and an experience that may be painfully hard to forget. Be safe and you’ll get along swimmingly. www.christusstcatherine.org

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

TEXAS CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS TEAM WINS 3RD IN STATE!

TCS SENIOR HEADING FOR THE MARINES

Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the reallife story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible. Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

Katy ISD

Elisa Kendall, Afton Otwell and Bao Truong qualified to play in the TAPPS State Tennis Competition on April 24th – 25th in Waco, TX. Elisa Kendall won the 1A State Title while Afton Otwell and Bao Truong tied for 5th place in each of their divisions. The combined points earned by Elisa and Afton allowed Texas Christian High School to place 3rd over all in the 1A Girls Division. TCS could not be more proud of the team’s accomplishment! Way to go Tigers!!!

Theater, Arts & Music MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder,’ arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season.

SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. Dr. Cynthia Aswad has wanted to be a veterinarian for as long as she can remember. She fulfilled that dream in 2010 when she earned a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M. Her professional interests include small animal medicine and surgery, but she particularly enjoys being a part of the special bond with clients and their pets. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Jacob, and their four legged child, Pearl. She also enjoys playing tennis, baking and decorating cakes, and crafting. Please help us welcome Dr. Aswad as she fulfills her life long dream of building long-term relationships with not just Katy residents and their pets but also Fulshear and all of the surrounding neighborhoods.

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

If you have ever visited the Statue of Liberty in person, you already know she’s an imposing figure, but consider the following fun facts: • Official dedication ceremonies held on Thursday, October 28, 1886. • Total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches. • Height of the Statue from her heel to the top of her head is 111 feet, 6 inches. • The face on the Statue of Liberty measures more than 8 feet tall. • There are 154 steps from the pedestal to the head of the Statue of Liberty. • A tablet held in her left hand measures 23’ 7” tall and 13’ 7” wide inscribed with the date JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776). • The Statue has a 35-foot waistline. • There are seven rays on her crown, one for each of the seven continents, each measuring up to 9 feet in length and weighing as much as 150 pounds. • Total weight of the Statue of Liberty is 225 tons (or 450,000 pounds). • At the feet of the Statue lie broken shackles of oppression and tyranny. • During the restoration completed in 1986, the new torch was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold. • The exterior copper covering of the Statue of Liberty is 3/32 of an inch thick (less than the thickness of two pennies) and the light green color (called a patina) is the result of natural weathering of the copper.

JULY 4TH - INDEPENDENCE DAY

America celebrates July 4th as Independence Day because it was on July 4, 1776, that members of the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. Following its adoption, the Declaration was read to the public in various American cities. Whenever they heard it, patriots erupted in cheers and celebrations.

! e l i m S 1260 Pin Oak Rd. Ste. 208 Katy, TX 77494 In 1777, Philadelphians remembered the 4th of July. Bells were rung, guns fired, candles lighted and firecrackers went off. However, while the War of Independence dragged on, July 4th celebrations were modest at best. When the war ended in 1783, July 4th became a holiday in some places. In Boston, it replaced the date of the Boston Massacre, March 5th, as the major patriotic holiday. Speeches, military events, parades and fireworks marked the day. In 1941, Congress declared July 4th a federal holiday.

THE LIBERTY BELL, THE BELL’S MESSAGE

The Liberty Bell’s inscription conveys a message of liberty, which goes beyond the words themselves. Since the bell was made, the words of the inscription have meant different things to different people. When William Penn created Pennsylvania’s government he allowed citizens to take part in making laws and gave them the right to choose the religion they wanted. The colonists were proud of the freedom that Penn gave them. In 1751, the Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly ordered a new bell for the State House. He asked that a Bible verse to be placed on the bell “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10). As the official bell of the Pennsylvania State House (today called Independence Hall) it rang many times for public announcements, but we remember times like July 8, 1776 when it rang to announce the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. The old State House bell was first called the “Liberty Bell” by a group trying to outlaw slavery. These abolitionists remembered the words on the bell and, in the 1830’s, adopted it as a symbol of their cause. Beginning in the late 1800’s, the Liberty Bell traveled around the country to expositions and fairs to help heal the divisions of the Civil War. It reminded Americans of their earlier days when they fought and worked together for independence.

In 1915, the bell made its last trip and came home to Philadelphia, where it now silently reminds us of the power of liberty. For more than 200 years people from around the world have felt the bell’s message. No one can see liberty, but people have used the Liberty Bell to represent this important idea.

JULY IS NATIONAL HOT DOG MONTH

July is National Hot Dog Month and according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans will be consuming the infamous little red tubes of “meat” in record numbers this summer. The Council estimates that over seven billion hot dogs will be eaten by Americans between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During the July 4th weekend alone (the biggest hot-dog holiday of the year), 155 million will be downed. Every year, Americans eat an average of 60 hot dogs each. They are clearly one of the country’s most loved, but most misunderstood, comfort foods. For more information, visit the Council’s website at www.hot-dog.org, bon appétit.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY & ICE CREAM MONTH

July is National Ice Cream Month and the 3rd Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day. In the USA, more ice cream is consumed per head than any other country in the world - such is the love of ice cream among Americans. This is reflected in other ways too, not least by the fact that the USA has its own “National Ice Cream Month.” Since 1984, when President Reagan proclaimed that National Ice Cream Month be celebrated annually, every July has been a focus for greater attention to ice cream in the United States with the 3rd Sunday of that month each year being National Ice Cream Day.
