I recently received an email from a new NC homeowner inquiring about the potential of a Mothers’ Club in NC. She said she is finding it hard to connect with other young mothers in the community and would like to establish a means whereby moms and kids could meet for play dates, community events and other activities. I think this is a great idea. We do have a good mix of elderly homeowners and young families in NC. Please see the article that Jaclyn Robertson wrote on this subject, which is in this newsletter. NCCIA will try to assist in making this a viable new entity in our community. Thank you Jaclyn for taking the time to put something like this together! Don Mach NCCIA President

JULY 4 TH - INDEPENDENCE DAY
Geyer roofinG
America celebrates July 4th as Independence Day because it was on July 4, 1776, that members of the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence.
Specializing in Re-Roofing
Following its adoption, the Declaration was read to the public in various American cities. Whenever they heard it, patriots erupted in cheers and celebrations.

In 1777, Philadelphians remembered the 4 of July. Bells were rung, guns fired, candles lighted and firecrackers went off. However, while the War of Independence dragged on, July 4th celebrations were modest at best.

When the war ended in 1783, July 4 became a holiday in some places. In Boston, it replaced the date of the Boston Massacre, March 5th, as the major patriotic holiday. Speeches, military events, parades and fireworks marked the day. In 1941, Congress declared July 4th a federal holiday. th
FUN FACTS ABOUT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
If you have ever visited the Statue of Liberty in person, you already know she’s an imposing figure, but consider the following fun facts: • Official dedication ceremonies held on Thursday, October 28, 1886. • Total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches. • Height of the Statue from her heel to the top of her head is 111 feet, 6 inches. • The face on the Statue of Liberty measures more than 8 feet tall. • There are 154 steps from the pedestal to the head of the Statue of Liberty. • A tablet held in her left hand measures 23’ 7” tall and 13’ 7” wide inscribed with the date JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776). • The Statue has a 35-foot waistline. • There are seven rays on her crown, one for each of the seven continents, each measuring up to 9 feet in length and weighing as much as 150 pounds. • Total weight of the Statue of Liberty is 225 tons (or 450,000 pounds). • At the feet of the Statue lie broken shackles of oppression and tyranny. • During the restoration completed in 1986, the new torch was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold. • The exterior copper covering of the Statue of Liberty is 3/32 of an inch thick (less than the thickness of two pennies) and the light green color (called a patina) is the result of natural weathering of the copper.

NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS
Raise your hand if you love our trees.
Most of us live in Nottingham because we love the big beautiful trees we have. Wouldn’t it be a shame to lose them? All right, the situation isn’t that dire, but it is serious enough that I’m asking you to be aware of it. Some of you may remember us writing about Oak Wilt disease in 2009, which affected several trees on Cramer Ct. The homeowner and NCCIA representatives met with the Texas Forestry Service and learned that Oak Wilt is a very contagious and dangerous disease that can wipe out entire areas of oak trees. You know it’s serious when you have eight scientists come down from Texas A&M University to survey the situation. The homeowner treated the trees and all was fine until recently, when we were informed that the trees on that property are again showing signs of the disease. Only a few instances of Oak Wilt have been found in the entire Houston area, although the Hill Country of Texas has experienced a great loss of oak trees as a result of the disease. Treatment is very expensive, so I am asking homeowners who start to see issues with their oak trees to immediately call the Texas Forestry Department and report it: 936-632-TREE (8733). If you go to their website (www.texasforestry.org), there is a great deal of information about the disease and what to look for. This is a very serious fungal disease that is spread by the root system. Our trees are one of our best assets and we surely don’t want to lose them. NO PARKING ON THE DANCE FLOOR NCCIA has received numerous complaints about the Auto Nation Ford automotive dealership at the I-10 service road at Windsor Glen. Complaints are primarily related to the dealership and their employees parking cars on both sides of Windsor Glen. The truth is that Harris County owns the streets and we do not. But the news is not all bad: Harris County is conducting a traffic study to see if “No parking” signs should be posted on one or both sides of Windsor Glen. We’ll certainly keep you informed on this issue. Also the dealership previously maintained the pipeline easement, which separates their property and that of the homeowners along Laverton. Their management has decided to no longer maintain that area. Frankly they do not own it and have

no obligation to do so. I spoke to the company management and we agreed that they will maintain it four months of the year and NCCIA will maintain it for four months. We feel it probably does not need mowing between November and February. Of course this is an additional cost to NCCIA, but we have no choice at this point and we do own the property.
WOOF! WOOF! (REALLY?!?!?)
Lions and tigers and bears we do not have, but - OH MY - we DO have barking dogs and there’s nothing Dorothy can do about that. I love animals and could not imagine life without a dog. Some of you may have seen me cruising the neighborhood with my Keeshond, whose name is Beau. And he, like every other dog in this world, barks. It’s actually part of their job description in this world. However, no one wants to listen to a dog barking incessantly and we have been receiving complaints about this recently. Please understand that the people on the NCCIA Board are volunteers and cannot go around the neighborhood listening for barking dogs. If you are in a situation where your neighbor’s barking dogs are driving you crazy, please address the issue with the homeowner. That typically takes care of the problem. However, as we all know, not all neighbors are good ones. If you have addressed the issue with your neighbor to no avail, you should know that we do have deed restrictions that state that homeowners are not permitted to cause loud noises and actions that disturb the peace of the community. In these cases, please call the Constable at 281.463.6666. The bottom line here is that if you have a dog, please be a responsible pet owner and be considerate to your neighbors.

Summer is here and fortunately, we have had regular rain, which means the grass is growing and therefore needs to be mowed (imagine that!). Incredibly, our management company has to send out over 100 letters EACH MONTH to homeowners telling them to mow and edge their lawns. This should NEVER be necessary. Yards need to be mowed about once per week! If you are going to be out of town, ask a neighbor to mow for you or hire a service for a month. Return the favor to your neighbor when they are out of town. Keeping our neighborhood in tip-top shape keeps our home values up and who could argue with that?

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP (YES, IT’S SKEETER TIME!)
1. Cut a plastic 2-liter bottle in two, halfway between the bottom and the top. 2. Mix 1/4 cup of brown sugar with 1 cup of hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the 2-liter bottle. 3. Add 1 gram of yeast. No need to mix. One packet of Fleischman’s active dry yeast is usually 1/4 ounce or 7 grams, so just a pinch is enough and you’ll have plenty left over from the packet for subsequent refills for your trap (put the leftover yeast packet in a ziplock bag and place in your refrigerator). 4. Place the funnel (top) part of the bottle, upside down, into the bottom half of the bottle, making sure the opening doesn’t extend into the water mixture. Tape the two halves of the bottle together securely with electrical (black) tape so there are no gaps. The black color attracts mosquitoes. 5. Place the trap in an area outside that is away from your normal gathering/activities area. 6. Change the solution every 2 weeks.

PACK 353
Cub Scout Pack 353, based out of St. Peter’s UMC, culminated another successful year as 40 boys advanced in rank at the annual end of the year May Picnic, held recently at Green Trails Park. Throughout the year the boys participated in various learning, fun filled activities and community service projects. Most recently, they were honored by Nottingham Country Elementary for their yearly coordination and participation in the Spring Carnival clean up. The Scouts have several fun activities planned this summer. If you are interested in learning more about Scouts, please contact Victoria Salinas at vc_conde@hotmail.com or visit www.katycubscouts.com.
GORDON ROSEL EARNS EAGLE AWARD Gordon Rosel, 18, of Katy, has earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts. Rosel was recognized in ceremonies on Sunday, April 29, 2013 at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Katy. He earned the rank of Eagle on February 27, 2013. A member of Troop 209, chartered by St. Peter’s Methodist Church, Rosel is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a service project that benefits a non-profit organization or the community. To earn his Eagle, Rosel developed a Land Navigation Course in George Bush Park that benefits the National Guard Armory, the Boy Scouts and the general public. Rosel began scouting in kindergarten in Cub Scout Pack 443. As a Cub, he earned ranks of Tiger, Wolf and Webelos. When asked what was the most difficult badge to earn he stated; “It was the rock climbing, because I didn’t know how to tie all those knots.” His favorite activity was camping (with over 100 nights of overnight camping to his credit) and admits his favorite camping staple is Pop-Tarts. Gordon received the Triple Crown last summer by completing all three national high-adventure bases operated by the Boy Scouts of American (Northern Tier in Minnesota and Canada, Philmont in New Mexico and Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys).
Nottingham Country July 2013
Rosel has been a member of the swim and football teams, as well as the FFA at Faith West Academy, where he is a senior. In the fall, Rosel plans to attend Sam Houston University to major in Criminal Justice. He was inspired by Scoutmaster Drew Young, a scoutmaster of Troop 209, who is on Houston’s bomb squad. Rosel wants to one day be on the SWAT, because “I see a need for justice and this where I am suppose to go,” he said. He is the son of Jeff Rosel and Kendra Rose both of Katy.

There is no “typical” American host family and Ayusa welcomes all interested families, with or without children, from both urban and rural communities. Host families provide three meals a day and a bedroom (either private or shared). Each student is supported by a professionally trained community representative from Ayusa who works with the family and student for the entire program. All host families must pass a criminal background check and a home visit by an Ayusa representative. Ayusa is a 501(c)3 and an official U.S. Department of State designated Exchange Visitor Program Sponsor. Families interested in learning more about hosting an exchange student can visit www.ayusa.org. Ayusa has been a member of the Council of Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET) for more than 25 years - since its foundation.

LOST YOUR PET? HARRIS COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL The Harris County Animal Control posts photos of all animals found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website. www.countypets.com.
LEASH LAW Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a

dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
