NEIGHBORHOOD/CRIME WATCH We can all participate in our Neighborhood/Crime Watch! It is easy! It’s about neighbors looking out for each other. When suspecting criminal activities, you are encouraged to contact the police and not to intervene. Call Fort Bend Sheriff at 281-341-4665. An alert and supportive neighborhood is the greatest single defense against crime. By getting to know your neighbors and their vehicles, you will most likely be aware of suspicious people, vehicles and/or sounds that could indicate criminal activity. Be a good neighbor. Report suspicious activity to the police and send an email alert to parkwaylakescommunity@ inbox.com so that it can be shared with our neighbors. Some neighbors are interested in organizing a neighborhood watch. We need a Co-chair and committee members. Please let us know you are interested!

WATER BILL INCREASE Many have been noticing an increase in their water bills. A visit to the monthly Fort Bend MUD 50 meeting (see their new website for more info: www.fortbendmud50.com) revealed that the increase is due to the Subsidence District’s groundwater reduction mandate, which has necessitated the expense of converting to surface water usage. For more information on this, go to the North Fort Bend Water Authority website at: www.nfbwa.com -From Helaine Fuss Clendennen
FREE WATER IRRIGATION SYSTEM EVALUATION Any homeowner in MUD 50 can get a FREE evaluation of their irrigation/sprinkler system. There’s a program being offered by your water supplier and the North Fort Bend Water Authority! You are invited to sign up today for the FREE evaluation by a licensed irrigator… The W.I.S.E Guys. There is no obligation on a homeowner’s part to purchase anything. You have nothing to lose, but you could learn a lot. You will be provided with a comprehensive evaluation of your system - checking the water patterns of your sprinklers and frequency settings of the controller. You will have access to the results on-line to help you learn how to use water more efficiently on yard and landscaped areas. That’s it…no pressure… you decide how to use the information. Why waste any more water… or money? Make an appointment now! Look for the details on-line at: www.nfbwa.com/wiseguys

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients-remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
If you have ever visited the Statue of Liberty in person, you already know she’s an imposing figure, but consider the following fun facts: • Official dedication ceremonies held on Thursday, October 28, 1886. • Total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches. • Height of the Statue from her heel to the top of her head is 111 feet, 6 inches. • The face on the Statue of Liberty measures more than 8 feet tall. • There are 154 steps from the pedestal to the head of the Statue of Liberty. • A tablet held in her left hand measures 23’ 7” tall and 13’ 7” wide inscribed with the date JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776). • The Statue has a 35-foot waistline. • There are seven rays on her crown, one for each of the seven continents, each measuring up to 9 feet in length and weighing as much as 150 pounds. • Total weight of the Statue of Liberty is 225 tons (or 450,000 pounds). • At the feet of the Statue lie broken shackles of oppression and tyranny. • During the restoration completed in 1986, the new torch was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold. • The exterior copper covering of the Statue of Liberty is 3/32 of an inch thick (less than the thickness of two pennies) and the light green color (called a patina) is the result of natural weathering of the copper.

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP (YES, IT’S SKEETER TIME!)
1. Cut a plastic 2-liter bottle in two, halfway between the bottom and the top. 2. Mix 1/4 cup of brown sugar with 1 cup of hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the 2-liter bottle. 3. Add 1 gram of yeast. No need to mix. One packet of Fleischman’s active dry yeast is usually 1/4 ounce or 7 grams, so just a pinch is enough and you’ll have plenty left over from the packet for subsequent refills for your trap (put the leftover yeast packet in a ziplock bag and place in your refrigerator). 4. Place the funnel (top) part of the bottle, upside down, into the bottom half of the bottle, making sure the opening doesn’t extend into the water mixture. Tape the two halves of the bottle together securely with electrical (black) tape so there are no gaps. The black color attracts mosquitoes. 5. Place the trap in an area outside that is away from your normal gathering/activities area. 6. Change the solution every 2 weeks.
Skeeter repellent - Slice a lime in half and press about 10-12 whole cloves into each half. Place in your gathering area. This only works if the smell of cloves doesn’t repel you and your guests too!
PLEASE, CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOGS! Please, for all the neighbors’ enjoyment of our beautiful community, please remove any “gifts” your dog leaves on private and/or common property.

PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.
• Privacy & Security Fences • Breezeway & Pool Fences • Custom Designs
VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

The Robert Rankin Chapter (Katy area) was awarded the Outstanding Texas Chapter by the Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (TXSSAR) for the 9th time in eleven years for its efforts to encourage patriotism, participate in historical programs and educate the public. This is the 6th consecutive year that Robert Rankin has won the Americanism Award. This is the highest award that may be earned by a chapter in outreach programs for youth, adults and general public.
CHAPTER AWARDS • The Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest is directed at students in the 4th and 5th grades. This year Katie Greene was awarded 5th place in the State of Texas Poster Contest. Katie was our chapter’s 1st place winner while her twin sister, Madie, was our 2nd place winner. • In The George & Stella Knight Essay Contest, students in grades 9-12 write about events that shaped American History. Penny Rosas, AP History teacher at Mayde High School, encouraged her students to submit essays. Chapter winners were Amber Chen-Goodspeed 1st place and Jonathan Amstutz 2nd place. • The JROTC Recognition Program is designed to foster the principle of the “citizen-soldier,” exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. This year the chapter awarded Medals and Certificates to 18 Outstanding High School students who participate in their High School JROTC programs. • We honor Eagle Scouts for their achievements and Daniel Schwin was our 1st place chapter winner of the Eagle Scout Contest. • The American History Teacher Award is given to a teacher whose instruction on the Revolutionary War excels above curriculum requirements. Joan Linsley was the 1st place winner of our chapter and Texas. Joan teaches social studies at Pin Oak Middle School. This is the second time the Rankin Chapter winner has won at the state level. • The Rankin Chapter was awarded a Star for Service to Children of the American Revolution (CAR), for promoting various youth programs. This is Rankin’s 4th consecutive year winning this award. Patriot Bobby Smith is the CAR Liaison Chairman. • This was Rankin’s 7th consecutive year to win a Star for the Furlong Award (Flag Certificates) and is the unofficial leader in Texas. Patriot Theron MacLaren is our flag certificate chairman. By Terry Richardson

The theme for this year is “Beneath the Surface.” Teens in grades 6 and up are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total number of hours they spend reading or the number of readingrelated activities they complete. The reading activities may include watching a movie based on a book, attending a teen library program or making a bookmark or poster based on a book. Listening to audio books and reading magazines and newspapers may also be counted. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online by going to the FBCL website. When the online registration form has been completed, the teens will then have their own online page on which to record their hours and activities. For the first ten activities completed, each teen will receive a mystery prize. The rewards continue with a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. Reading rewards can be redeemed beginning Monday, June 10th. The last day to pick up awards is August 31st. The names of participants will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card that will be awarded to several lucky readers completing 20 activities or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location. There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Club and it is open to all teens, regardless of the county of residence. All programs are free and open to the public. The Summer Reading Club programs are sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries, the Friends organizations that support the county library system and the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading program materials for public libraries.

Dr. Cynthia Aswad has wanted to be a veterinarian for as long as she can remember. She fulfilled that dream in 2010 when she earned a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M. Her professional interests include small animal medicine and surgery, but she particularly enjoys being a part of the special bond with clients and their pets. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Jacob, and their four legged child, Pearl. She also enjoys playing tennis, baking and decorating cakes, and crafting. Please help us welcome Dr. Aswad as she fulfills her life long dream of building long-term relationships with not just Katy residents and their pets but also Fulshear and all of the surrounding neighborhoods.

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder,’ arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www. mildredsumbrella.com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

GORDON ROSEL EARNS EAGLE AWARD Gordon Rosel, 18, of Katy, has earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts. Rosel was recognized in ceremonies on Sunday, April 29, 2013 at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Katy. He earned the rank of Eagle on February 27, 2013. A member of Troop 209, chartered by St. Peter’s Methodist Church, Rosel is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a service project that benefits a non-profit organization or the community. To earn his Eagle, Rosel developed a Land Navigation Course in George Bush Park that benefits the National Guard Armory, the Boy Scouts and the general public. Rosel began scouting in kindergarten in Cub Scout Pack 443. As a Cub, he earned ranks of Tiger, Wolf and Webelos. When asked what was the most difficult badge to earn he stated;

“It was the rock climbing, because I didn’t know how to tie all those knots.” His favorite activity was camping (with over 100 nights of overnight camping to his credit) and admits his favorite camping staple is Pop-Tarts. Gordon received the Triple Crown last summer by completing all three national high-adventure bases operated by the Boy Scouts of American (Northern Tier in Minnesota and Canada, Philmont in New Mexico and Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys). Rosel has been a member of the swim and football teams, as well as the FFA at Faith West Academy, where he is a senior. In the fall, Rosel plans to attend Sam Houston University to major in Criminal Justice. He was inspired by Scoutmaster Drew Young, a scoutmaster of Troop 209, who is on Houston’s bomb squad. Rosel wants to one day be on the SWAT, because “I see a need for justice and this where I am suppose to go,” he said. He is the son of Jeff Rosel and Kendra Rose both of Katy.

Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equineassisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. July 2013
Parkway Lakes
Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year.
