CHAPTER AWARDS • The Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest is directed at students in the 4th and 5th grades. This year Katie Greene was awarded 5th place in the State of Texas Poster Contest. Katie was our chapter’s 1st place winner while her twin sister, Madie, was our 2nd place winner. • In The George & Stella Knight Essay Contest, students in grades 9-12 write about events that shaped American History. Penny Rosas, AP History teacher at Mayde High School, encouraged her students to submit essays. Chapter winners were Amber ChenGoodspeed 1st place and Jonathan Amstutz 2nd place. • The JROTC Recognition Program is designed to foster the principle of the “citizen-soldier,” exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. This year the chapter awarded Medals and Certificates to 18 Outstanding High School students who participate in their High School JROTC programs. • We honor Eagle Scouts for their achievements and Daniel Schwin was our 1st place chapter winner of the Eagle Scout Contest. • The American History Teacher Award is given to a teacher whose instruction on the Revolutionary War excels above curriculum requirements. Joan Linsley was the 1st place winner of our chapter and Texas. Joan teaches social studies at Pin Oak Middle School. This is the second time the Rankin Chapter winner has won at the state level. • The Rankin Chapter was awarded a Star for Service to Children of the American Revolution (CAR), for promoting various youth programs. This is Rankin’s 4th consecutive year winning this award. Patriot Bobby Smith is the CAR Liaison Chairman. • This was Rankin’s 7th consecutive year to win a Star for the Furlong Award (Flag Certificates) and is the unofficial leader in Texas. The Board of Directors of Special Pals, a limited-intake, nokill animal shelter located in west Houston, announced that Yvonne David has left her post as executive director of the organization. “We are grateful for Yvonne David’s years of service and commitment to the mission of Special Pals, and we wish her luck on future endeavors,” said Joycelyn Urech, Chairman of the Special Pals Board of Directors. The Board has appointed shelter staff veteran Elizabeth Trick as the interim executive director, and has established a transition team to ensure seamless operations during this time. Trick will support the Board’s oversight and the shelters’ ongoing work during the interim period, during which time the team will assess Special Pals’ executive leadership needs. “I am pleased to accept the position as interim executive director and I look forward to providing leadership and continuing our mission as a no-kill organization,” says Trick. “I am dedicated to making the necessary changes to improve our performance, broaden our scope and enhance our impact in the community.” During the transition period, Special Pals will continue to host low-cost wellness clinics on scheduled Saturdays and perform spay and neuter surgeries, while also continuing its primary mission: finding permanent, qualified homes for the over 65 cats and dogs currently residing at the shelter.

1. Cut a plastic 2-liter bottle in two, halfway between the bottom and the top. 2. Mix 1/4 cup of brown sugar with 1 cup of hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the 2-liter bottle. 3. Add 1 gram of yeast. No need to mix. One packet of Fleischman’s active dry yeast is usually 1/4 ounce or 7 grams, so just a pinch is enough and you’ll have plenty left over from the packet for subsequent refills for your trap (put the leftover yeast packet in a ziplock bag and place in your refrigerator). 4. Place the funnel (top) part of the bottle, upside down, into the bottom half of the bottle, making sure the opening doesn’t extend into the water mixture. Tape the two halves of the bottle together securely with electrical (black) tape so there are no gaps. The black color attracts mosquitoes. 5. Place the trap in an area outside that is away from your normal gathering/activities area. 6. Change the solution every 2 weeks.

PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.
• Privacy & Security Fences • Breezeway & Pool Fences • Custom Designs
VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

GORDON ROSEL EARNS EAGLE AWARD Gordon Rosel, 18, of Katy, has earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts. Rosel was recognized in ceremonies on Sunday, April 29, 2013 at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Katy. He earned the rank of Eagle on February 27, 2013. A member of Troop 209, chartered by St. Peter’s Methodist Church, Rosel is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a service project that benefits a non-profit organization or the community. To earn his Eagle, Rosel developed a Land Navigation Course in George Bush Park that benefits the National Guard Armory, the Boy Scouts and the general public. Rosel began scouting in kindergarten in Cub Scout Pack 443. As a Cub, he earned ranks of Tiger, Wolf and Webelos. When asked what was the most difficult badge to earn he stated; “It was the rock climbing, because I didn’t know how to tie all those knots.” His favorite activity was camping (with over 100 nights of overnight camping to his credit) and admits his favorite camping staple is Pop-Tarts. Gordon received the Triple Crown last summer by completing all three national high-adventure bases operated by the Boy Scouts of American (Northern Tier in Minnesota and Canada, Philmont in New Mexico and Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys). Rosel has been a member of the swim and football teams, as well as the FFA at Faith West Academy, where he is a senior. In the fall, Rosel plans to attend Sam Houston University to major in Criminal Justice. He was inspired by Scoutmaster Drew Young, a scoutmaster of Troop 209, who is on Houston’s bomb squad. Rosel wants to one day be on the SWAT, because “I see a need for justice and this where I am suppose to go,” he said. He is the son of Jeff Rosel and Kendra Rose both of Katy.

THEATER/ARTS MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON! FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder,’ arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equineassisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? ADOPT A US SOLDIER
Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving
in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.

With warm weather and family events, the Fourth of July can be a fun time with great memories. But before your family celebrates, make sure everyone knows about fireworks safety. • Kids should never play with fireworks! • Buy only legal fireworks and store them in a cool, dry place. • Never try to make your own fireworks. • Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents. • Steer clear of others. Never throw or point fireworks at someone, even in jest. • Don’t hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting. Wear some sort of eye protection and avoid carrying fireworks in your pocket. • Point fireworks away from homes and keep away from brush and leaves and flammable substances. • Light one firework at a time (not in glass or metal containers) and never relight a dud. • Don’t allow kids to pick up pieces of fireworks after an event. Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in the trashcan. • Think about your pet. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they’ll run loose or get injured.

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

America celebrates July 4th as Independence Day because it was on July 4, 1776, that members of the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. Following its adoption, the Declaration was read to the public in various American cities. Whenever they heard it, patriots erupted in cheers and celebrations. In 1777, Philadelphians remembered the 4th of July. Bells were rung, guns fired, candles lighted and firecrackers went off. However, while the War of Independence dragged on, July 4th celebrations were modest at best. When the war ended in 1783, July 4th became a holiday in some places. In Boston, it replaced the date of the Boston Massacre, March 5th, as the major patriotic holiday. Speeches, military events, parades and fireworks marked the day. In 1941, Congress declared July 4th a federal holiday.
