MESSAGES FROM THE BOARD HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

For a safe and happy holiday, please dispose of your fireworks responsibly. • Do not set the trash from your fireworks next to your home or in your garage. • Wet down the trash thoroughly. • Clean any trash in your yard and street promptly! • Remember, celebrating the Fourth of July is fun, but respect your neighbors who have to go to work the next morning and wrap up your celebrations in a timely manner. Thanks! Yard of Month Continues! Top ten tips to be a winner: 1. Mow and edge yard weekly. 2. Remove any stains in driveway. 3. Remove weeds in seams of driveway or sidewalk. 4. Make sure your trash cans are not in sight from street. 5. Remove any dead plants or trees. 6. No mismatched plastic plant/flower containers. 7. You don’t need flowers to be a winner - a well manicured yard and nicely maintained shrubbery can be a winner, too! 8. Please make sure the gutters are free of debris. 9. Front door looks marvelous! No fading or peeling paint! 10. Garden hose is neatly stored. Remember, there will be eight winners a month. Every winner receives a $25 gift card and a Yard of the Month sign for their yard! Keep up the good work! “Why I Love Westfield” Poster Contest: For ages 5 through 15. Entries are due by July 20th. They can be turned in to either of the two pools: Misty Cove or Brandon Oaks. A complete list of the rules for the contest are posted at each pool. Enter now for your chance to win a prize! Summer Time Crime Watch • Report suspicious activity to the Sheriff non-emergency number, 713-221-6000. For emergencies call 911.

• Turn on your front porch lights at night. It is a simple and effective way to deter crime. • If you back up to a park or field, turn on your back porch light at night. • Lock your car and remove all valuables from it. Tip: if you can avoid parking your car in the street, do so. Cars that are parked in the street are broken into more often than cars parked in driveways. • If you are at home during the day, please report any suspicious activity or any suspicious persons. • Make sure when you go on vacation that you make arrangements to have your newspaper held or picked up. • Make sure when you go on vacation that you make arrangements to have your yard mowed. An overgrown lawn is a sign to criminals that you are away.

Deed restriction violations are recorded on monthly drive by inspections through all sections of Westfield. These are performed by Spectrum Association Management. Homeowners with violations are notified by a series of letters according the Deed Restriction Enforcement Policy. This Policy serves as procedure for Spectrum Association Management to follow. If you receive a letter, don’t take it as an insult or a call to battle. The worst action is to ignore the letter. If you have resolved the problem, need more time or circumstances do not allow you to resolve the problem at this time, notify Spectrum Association Management as per the instructions in the letter. If you wish to report a deed restriction violation in your neighborhood, please complete the form on the web Site.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

Katie Morrison, a senior at Mayde Creek High School, was selected to have her play “Pamoja Na Wema” read and performed at the Alley Theatre as part of their Playwriting 360˚ Residency. Pamoja Na Wema, which means kindness in Swahili, examines the effect of one random act of kindness on the life of the protagonist, Isobel. Katie’s play is one of only six plays selected from Houston area schools. The showcase took place on the Alley Theatre’s Neuhaus Stage, May 13th. Mayde Creek High School is a partner school with the Alley Theatre, including the Playwriting 360˚ Residency. The partnership is made possible by a grant from Wood Group.
