PARENTS’ DAY
Kids, don’t forget that July 28th is Parents’ Day! Make sure to let your parents know how much you appreciate them and maybe you could do something special that day to help out. Some ideas are: make a card telling them why you think they are such wonderful parents, clean your room without being told, help clean the table after dinner (if you are old enough, make dinner), help watch your younger siblings so mom and dad can get a break.
FUN FACTS ABOUT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY
If you have ever visited the Statue of Liberty in person, you already know she’s an imposing figure, but consider the following fun facts: • Official dedication ceremonies held on Thursday, October 28, 1886. • Total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches. • Height of the Statue from her heel to the top of her head is 111 feet, 6 inches. • The face on the Statue of Liberty measures more than 8 feet tall. • There are 154 steps from the pedestal to the head of the Statue of Liberty. • A tablet held in her left hand measures 23’ 7” tall and 13’ 7” wide inscribed with the date JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776). • The Statue has a 35-foot waistline. • There are seven rays on her crown, one for each of the seven continents, each measuring up to 9 feet in length and weighing as much as 150 pounds. • Total weight of the Statue of Liberty is 225 tons (or 450,000 pounds). • At the feet of the Statue lie broken shackles of oppression and tyranny. • During the restoration completed in 1986, the new torch was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold. • The exterior copper covering of the Statue of Liberty is 3/32 of an inch thick (less than the thickness of two pennies) and the light green color (called a patina) is the result of natural weathering of the copper.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients - remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.
SUMMER PET SAFETY TIPS
Hot weather can make us all uncomfortable and it poses special risks for your dog. Keep the following safety concerns in mind as the temperature rises and follow our tips to keep your dog cool. Heat Hazards • If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child’s wading pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in. • Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. • Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water. • Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks

in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun’s heat is less intense. • Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can burn your dog’s paws. • Dogs that are brachycephalic (short-faced), such as Bulldogs, Boxers, Japanese Chins and Pekingese, have an especially hard time in the heat because they do not pant as efficiently as longer-faced dogs. Keep your brachycephalic dog inside with air-conditioning. General Health • Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, especially since dogs tend to stay outdoors longer and come into contact with other animals more during the summer months. • Keep dogs off of lawns that have been chemically treated or fertilized for 24 hours (or according to package instructions) and away from potentially toxic plants and flowers. • Keep your dog well brushed and clean. • Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes, which carry heartworm disease, are more prevalent in warmer months. Ask your veterinarian for an effective preventive to keep these parasites off your dog. Beach Tips • Make sure your dog has a shady spot to rest in and plenty of fresh water. • Dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur and pink skin, can sunburn. Limit your dog’s exposure during the day and apply sun block to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside. • Check with a lifeguard for daily water conditions. Dogs are easy targets for sea lice and jellyfish. • Running on the sand is strenuous exercise. A dog that is out of shape can easily pull a tendon or ligament, so keep a check

on your dog’s activity. • Do not let your dog drink seawater; the salt will make him sick. • Salt and other minerals in ocean water can damage your dog’s coat, so rinse him off at the end of the day. • Not all beaches permit dogs; check local ordinances before heading out. Water Safety • Most dogs enjoy swimming, but some cannot swim and others may hate the water. Be conscious of your dog’s preferences and skills before trying to make them swim. • If you’re swimming for the first time with your dog, start in shallow water and coax him in by calling his name. Encourage him with toys or treats. Or, let him follow another experienced dog he is friendly with. • Never throw your dog into the water. • If your dog begins to paddle with his front legs, lift his hind legs and help him float. He should quickly catch on and keep his back end up. • Don’t let your dog overdo it; swimming is very hard work and he may tire quickly. • If swimming at the ocean, be careful of strong tides. • If you have your own pool, make sure your dog knows where the stairs or ladder are located. Be sure that pool covers are firmly in place; dogs have been known to slip in under openings in the covers and drown. • Never leave your dog unattended in water. Travel • By Air: Many airlines will not ship animals during summer months due to dangers caused by hot weather. Some will only allow dogs to fly in the early morning or in the evening. Check with your airlines for specific rules. If you do ship a dog, put icepacks or an ice blanket in the dog’s crate. (Two-liter soft drink bottles filled with water and frozen work well.) Provide a container of fresh water, as well as a container of frozen water that will thaw over the course of the trip. • By Car: Keep your dog cool in the car by putting icepacks in his crate. Make sure the crate is well ventilated. Put a sunshade on your car windows. Bring along fresh water, a bowl and a tarp or tent so you can set up a shady spot when you stop. Keep a spray bottle filled with water to spritz on your dog to cool him down. • By RV: A dog’s safety should not depend on the air conditioning and generator systems in an RV or motor home. These devices can malfunction, with tragic results. If you leave your dog in an RV with the generator running, check it often or have a neighbor monitor it. Some manufacturers have devices that will notify you if the generator should malfunction. Never leave an RV or motor home completely shut up, even if the generator and AC are running. Crack a window or door or run the exhaust fan. Never, ever leave a dog unattended in a vehicle in the summer months. Heatstroke and death can occur within minutes in warm temperatures. Heatstroke Heatstroke can be the serious and often fatal result of a dog’s prolonged exposure to excessive heat. Below are the signs of heatstroke and the actions you should take if your dog is overcome. Early Stages: Heavy panting; rapid breathing;

excessive drooling; bright red gums and tongue; or standing 4-square, posting or spreading out in an attempt to maintain balance. Advanced Stages: White or blue gums; lethargy, unwillingness to move; uncontrollable urination or defecation; labored, noisy breathing; and shock. If your dog begins to exhibit signs of heatstroke, you should immediately try to cool the dog down by: Apply rubbing alcohol to the dog’s paw pads; apply ice packs to the groin area; hose down with water; allow the dog to lick ice chips or drink a small amount of water; offer Pedialyte to restore electrolytes; and check your dog’s temperature regularly during this process. Once the dog’s temperature has stabilized at between 100 to 102 degrees, you can stop the cool-down process. If you cannot get the dog cooled down and you begin to see signs of advanced heatstroke, take the dog to the veterinarian immediately. www.akc.org

JULY IS NATIONAL HOT DOG MONTH
July is National Hot Dog Month and according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans will be consuming the infamous little red tubes of “meat” in record numbers this summer. The Council estimates that over seven billion hot dogs will be eaten by Americans between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During the July 4th weekend alone (the biggest hot-dog holiday of the year), 155 million will be downed. Every year, Americans eat an average of 60 hot dogs each. They are clearly one of the country’s most loved, but most misunderstood, comfort foods. For more information, visit the Council’s website at www.hot-dog.org, bon appétit.
NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY & ICE CREAM MONTH
July is National Ice Cream Month and the 3rd Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day. In the USA, more ice cream is consumed per head than any other country in the world - such is the love of ice cream among Americans. This is reflected in other ways too, not least by the fact that the USA has its own “National Ice Cream Month.” Since 1984, when President Reagan proclaimed that National Ice Cream Month be celebrated annually, every July has been a focus for greater attention to ice cream in the United States with the 3rd Sunday of that month each year being National Ice Cream Day.

A POOL IS COOL, BUT ONLY WHEN IT’S SAFE
Pools make for great summer fun, but they can be an accident waiting to happen. Pools are a great way to beat the heat, but they can be dangerous. Drowning and waterborne infections are threats for adults and children alike. To make sure your memories of pools are happy ones, follow these tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Make safety a priority. It’s easier than you might think for someone - especially a child - to accidentally fall into a pool. Children can also quietly make their way to a pool before anyone knows they’re missing. If you have a pool on your property, take these precautions: • Completely surround the pool with walls or fences that are at least 5 feet high. Make sure gates are self-closing, self-latching and out of small children’s reach. • If your house makes up the barrier of one side of the pool, equip doors leading from the house with an alarm that will sound if the door is unexpectedly opened. • For above-ground pools, secure or remove steps or ladders when the pool isn’t in use. • Consider using a power safety cover. The cover is a motor-powered barrier that can be placed over the water when the pool isn’t in use. • Think about a pool alarm. The CPSC recommends an underwater alarm, which detects movement under the water, with remote receivers placed inside the house. Take extra precautions with children. Learning to swim is always a good idea, but according to the AAP, children aren’t developmentally ready for swimming lessons until at least age 4. Even then, swimming lessons don’t guarantee a child will be safe in the water. Keep these points in mind concerning pools and children: • Never leave a child alone in a pool, even for a moment. • Avoid air-filled “swimming aids,” such as water wings. They can give children a false sense of security. • Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren’t tempted to reach for them. • Protect your child from sunburn by applying a sunscreen with a sun

protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Reapply after swimming. • Make sure an adult is always within arm’s length whenever an infant or toddler is in the water. • If a child is missing, always check the pool first. Seconds count when a child has fallen in the water. Be prepared for an emergency. Ideally, no one will have a problem in your pool. But if they do, you need to be ready. • Keep rescue equipment, such as a shepherd’s hook (a long pole with a hook on the end of it) and a life preserver near the pool. • Make sure a telephone is at the pool when the pool is in use. • Make sure you or other adults watching young children in the pool know CPR and can rescue a child if necessary. Guard against infection. A pool is basically a bath that a lot of people share at once. As a result, germs can easily be transmitted, especially through fecal matter. While chlorine kills most germs, it can’t kill all of them. Some precautions are necessary. • Don’t get in the water if you have diarrhea. • Never swallow pool water. • Wash your hands and bottom and those of your child, thoroughly with soap and water after having a bowel movement. • Take your child to the toilet for bathroom breaks often. • Change diapers in a bathroom, not near the pool. Germs can contaminate surfaces in and near the water. Have fun! Just a few safety precautions can mean the difference between a refreshing way to spend the day and an experience that may be painfully hard to forget. Be safe and you’ll get along swimmingly. www.christusstcatherine.org

A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping.
