ROBERT RANKIN CHAPTER BEST IN STATE WINS OUTSTANDING CHAPTER AND AMERICANISM AWARDS The Robert Rankin Chapter (Katy area) was awarded the Outstanding Texas Chapter by the Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (TXSSAR) for the 9th time in eleven years for its efforts to encourage patriotism, participate in historical programs and educate the public. This is the 6th consecutive year that Robert Rankin has won the Americanism Award. This is the highest award that may be earned by a chapter in outreach programs for youth, adults and general public.
CHAPTER AWARDS • The Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest is directed at students in the 4th and 5th grades. This year Katie Greene was awarded 5th place in the State of Texas Poster Contest. For your convenience, we have highlighted in this letter information we consider important and can be helpful to you as a new homeowner in WoodCreek Reserve. Pool and Tennis Courts: To obtain a gate access card to the pool and tennis courts, complete the enclosed “gate access card request” form and return it to our office. The pool and tennis courts are located at 26519 Kingsland Blvd., Katy, TX 77494. Pool Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 9:00 AM thru 10:00 PM Monday: Closed for cleaning (unless Monday is a holiday, then the pool will be closed Tuesday) Tennis Court Hours: Everyday 5:00 AM thru 11:00 PM Car Stickers: The car stickers are to be placed on the upper corner of the windshield on the passenger side of your automobile. Please make note on your “gate access request form” how many stickers are needed for your family. These stickers are numbered for accountability and are tied to your address. You must take the stickers off and mail them back to Crest Management when you move from the community or sell the vehicle. The stickers will not be reused, but this will keep unauthorized persons from visiting the community without being noticed. Keeping Your Family Informed: Our office would like to gather 100% of all homeowners email addresses for easy notification of any community updates, alerts and meeting notices. In the body of your email provide your name, mailing address and phone number. Thank you for helping us keep you informed and up to date. Please email information to info@crest-management.com Newsletter: The WoodCreek Reserve official Newsletter is published by Krenek Printing, 281-463-8649 or www.krenekprinting.com; this is a wonderful source of information regarding your community at no cost to you. Please contact them (news@ krenekprinting.com) with your mailing information to receive this wealth of information. Friendly Katy Neighbors: Did you know that you can participate in Crime Watch as easily as being a “nosy neighbor?” If you have not already done so, talk to the neighbors next to you, across the street and down the street. Introduce yourself; get to know them and who lives in the household. Encourage them to do the same and pledge to watch out for each other. Don’t hesitate to report suspicious persons to the City of Katy Police or Fort Bend Co. Sheriffs and don’t assume someone else will do it. Reports from citizens are the best sources of information for law enforcement. They can best help us if we help them. Emergencies or crimes in progress should be immediately reported to “911.” Non-emergency calls should go to City of Katy Police at 281-391-4848 or Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. 281-341-4665.

SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOP
Please remember to be respectful of your neighbors’ yards and the community grounds. When you take your pet for a walk, come prepared with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. If your pet poops during your walk, please scoop and trash. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show that you respect your fellow neighbors’ and our beautiful community.
REMINDERS
Reminder that trashcans are to be stored out of public view, except for on designated trash days. This helps keep the community looking good.
KATY ANIMAL CONTROL
Katy Animal Control works in conjunction with the Katy Police Department enforcing City and State laws. Lost pets are kept in a 3,000 sq. ft. temperature controlled, state-inspected building.
The Katy Animal Shelter does not adopt out animals, therefore, it is extremely important that pets are licensed and vaccinated at six months of age. The department strives to make the licensing process as convenient as possible and can be scheduled by calling the shelter at 281-391-4740 or email dbrown@ katypd.com. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM and can be reached at 281-391-4740 (all calls are logged and returned, so please leave a message). For after hour emergencies, please call the Katy Police Department at 281-391-4848. It is unlawful to dump animals at the shelter. Dogs and/or cats are not allowed to run at large on private property and must wear collar and tags at all times. Any person or entity raising, keeping and maintaining livestock and/or fowl on tracts of land larger than one acre shall obtain an annual permit from the city, except that no permit is required for single tracts of land larger than five acres. Live animal traps are available with a deposit and signed contract.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY • Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP (YES, IT’S SKEETER TIME!)
1. Cut a plastic 2-liter bottle in two, halfway between the bottom and the top. 2. Mix 1/4 cup of brown sugar with 1 cup of hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the 2-liter bottle. 3. Add 1 gram of yeast. No need to mix. One packet of Fleischman’s active dry yeast is usually 1/4 ounce or 7 grams, so just a pinch is enough and you’ll have plenty left over from the packet for subsequent refills for your trap (put the leftover yeast packet in a ziplock bag and place in your refrigerator). 4. Place the funnel (top) part of the bottle, upside down, into the bottom half of the bottle, making sure the opening doesn’t extend into the water mixture. Tape the two halves of the bottle together securely with electrical (black) tape so there are no gaps. The black color attracts mosquitoes. 5. Place the trap in an area outside that is away from your normal gathering/activities area. 6. Change the solution every 2 weeks.

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder,’ arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn

King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre.

A POOL IS COOL, BUT ONLY WHEN IT’S SAFE Pools make for great summer fun, but they can be an accident waiting to happen. Pools are a great way to beat the heat, but they can be dangerous. Drowning and waterborne infections are threats for adults and children alike. To make sure your memories of pools are happy ones, follow these tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Make safety a priority. It’s easier than you might think for someone - especially a child - to accidentally fall into a pool. Children can also quietly make their way to a pool before anyone knows they’re missing. If you have a pool on your property, take these precautions: • Completely surround the pool with walls or fences that are at least 5 feet high. Make sure gates are self-closing, selflatching and out of small children’s reach.

Woodcreek Reserve
281-391-SOLD (7653) www.lizcarter.com Our Family Serving Your Family Since 1976 • If your house makes up the barrier of one side of the pool, equip doors leading from the house with an alarm that will sound if the door is unexpectedly opened. • For above-ground pools, secure or remove steps or ladders when the pool isn’t in use. • Consider using a power safety cover. The cover is a motorpowered barrier that can be placed over the water when the pool isn’t in use. • Think about a pool alarm. The CPSC recommends an underwater alarm, which detects movement under the water, with remote receivers placed inside the house. Take extra precautions with children. Learning to swim is always a good idea, but according to the AAP, children aren’t developmentally ready for swimming lessons until at least age 4. Even then, swimming lessons don’t guarantee a child will be safe in the water. Keep these points in mind concerning pools and children: • Never leave a child alone in a pool, even for a moment. • Avoid air-filled “swimming aids,” such as water wings. They can give children a false sense of security. • Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren’t tempted to reach for them. • Protect your child from sunburn by applying a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Reapply after swimming. • Make sure an adult is always within arm’s length whenever an infant or toddler is in the water. • If a child is missing, always check the pool first. Seconds count when a child has fallen in the water. Be prepared for an emergency. Ideally, no one will have a problem in your pool. But if they do, you need to be ready.

Guard against infection. A pool is basically a bath that a lot of people share at once. As a result, germs can easily be transmitted, especially through fecal matter. While chlorine kills most germs, it can’t kill all of them. Some precautions are necessary. • Don’t get in the water if you have diarrhea. • Never swallow pool water. • Wash your hands and bottom and those of your child, thoroughly with soap and water after having a bowel movement. • Take your child to the toilet for bathroom breaks often. • Change diapers in a bathroom, not near the pool. Germs can contaminate surfaces in and near the water. Have fun! Just a few safety precautions can mean the difference between a refreshing way to spend the day and an experience that may be painfully hard to forget. Be safe and you’ll get along swimmingly. www.christusstcatherine.org

10 WAYS TO STAY HYDRATED THIS SUMMER While it’s always a good idea to stay hydrated, it’s especially important when the temps of Summer start rising. Whether you’re spending your vacation camping and hiking or just doing more outdoor daily activities like biking and walking, I’ve got some tips for how you can stay hydrated during the warm weather months. • Eat your water. Chowing down on water-filled foods like watermelon, is an easy and refreshing way to keep hydrated. • Swap soda for sparkling water. If you’re trying to kick a soda habit, sparkling water is a healthy, but still fizzy, alternative. • Hydrate before exercising. Be sure to drink water before exercising to maximize your workout. • Drink water on the plane. If you’re traveling this Summer, don’t forget to drink up the H2O on the plane. • Stay hydrated at work. Even when working indoors, it’s important to keep the fluids handy. • There are five more ways, so read more. • Drink water before meals. By drinking water before meals, not only will you stay hydrated but you’re less likely to overeat. • Have enough on hand. When you’re spending the day camping or biking, it’s important to bring enough water to last the trip. • Spice it up with healthy flavoring. If you’re having a hard time getting enough water, spice it up with some natural flavoring. • Keep track of your daily water intake. Try this tasty and handy way to keep track of your H2O intake. • Keep a reusable bottle with you. Having a water bottle with you at all times is the easiest way to stay hydrated without even thinking about it.

Hot weather can make us all uncomfortable and it poses special risks for your dog. Keep the following safety concerns in mind as the temperature rises and follow our tips to keep your dog cool. Heat Hazards • If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child’s wading pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in. • Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. • Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water. • Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun’s heat is less intense. • Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can burn your dog’s paws. • Dogs that are brachycephalic (short-faced), such as Bulldogs, Boxers, Japanese Chins and Pekingese, have an especially hard time in the heat because they do not pant as efficiently as longer-faced dogs. Keep your brachycephalic dog inside with air-conditioning. General Health • Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date, especially since dogs tend to stay outdoors longer and come into contact with other animals more during the summer months. • Keep dogs off of lawns that have been chemically treated or fertilized for 24 hours (or according to package instructions) and away from potentially toxic plants and flowers. • Keep your dog well brushed and clean. • Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes, which carry heartworm disease, are more prevalent in warmer months. Ask your veterinarian for an effective preventive to keep these parasites off your dog.

281-788-2047 Beach Tips • Make sure your dog has a shady spot to rest in and plenty of fresh water. • Dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur and pink skin, can sunburn. Limit your dog’s exposure during the day and apply sun block to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside. • Check with a lifeguard for daily water conditions. Dogs are easy targets for sea lice and jellyfish. • Running on the sand is strenuous exercise. A dog that is out of shape can easily pull a tendon or ligament, so keep a check on your dog’s activity. • Do not let your dog drink seawater; the salt will make him sick. • Salt and other minerals in ocean water can damage your dog’s coat, so rinse him off at the end of the day. • Not all beaches permit dogs; check local ordinances before heading out. Water Safety • Most dogs enjoy swimming, but some cannot swim and others may hate the water. Be conscious of your dog’s preferences and skills before trying to make them swim. • If you’re swimming for the first time with your dog, start in shallow water and coax him in by calling his name. Encourage him with toys or treats. Or, let him follow another experienced dog he is friendly with. • Never throw your dog into the water. • If your dog begins to paddle with his front legs, lift his hind legs and help him float. He should quickly catch on and keep his back end up. • Don’t let your dog overdo it; swimming is very hard work and he may tire quickly.

• If swimming at the ocean, be careful of strong tides. • If you have your own pool, make sure your dog knows where the stairs or ladder are located. Be sure that pool covers are firmly in place; dogs have been known to slip in under openings in the covers and drown. • Never leave your dog unattended in water. Travel • By Air: Many airlines will not ship animals during summer months due to dangers caused by hot weather. Some will only allow dogs to fly in the early morning or in the evening. Check with your airlines for specific rules. If you do ship a dog, put icepacks or an ice blanket in the dog’s crate. (Two-liter soft drink bottles filled with water and frozen work well.) Provide a container of fresh water, as well as a container of frozen water that will thaw over the course of the trip. • By Car: Keep your dog cool in the car by putting icepacks in his crate. Make sure the crate is well ventilated. Put a sunshade on your car windows. Bring along fresh water, a bowl and a tarp or tent so you can set up a shady spot when you stop. Keep a spray bottle filled with water to spritz on your dog to cool him down. • By RV: A dog’s safety should not depend on the air conditioning and generator systems in an RV or motor home. These devices can malfunction, with tragic results. If you leave your dog in an RV with the generator running, check it often or have a neighbor monitor it. Some manufacturers have devices that will notify you if the generator should
malfunction. Never leave an RV or motor home completely shut up, even if the generator and AC are running. Crack a window or door or run the exhaust fan. Never, ever leave a dog unattended in a vehicle in the summer months. Heatstroke and death can occur within minutes in warm temperatures. Heatstroke Heatstroke can be the serious and often fatal result of a dog’s prolonged exposure to excessive heat. Below are the signs of heatstroke and the actions you should take if your dog is overcome. Early Stages: Heavy panting; rapid breathing; excessive drooling; bright red gums and tongue; or standing 4-square, posting or spreading out in an attempt to maintain balance. Advanced Stages: White or blue gums; lethargy, unwillingness to move; uncontrollable urination or defecation; labored, noisy breathing; and shock. If your dog begins to exhibit signs of heatstroke, you should immediately try to cool the dog down by: Apply rubbing alcohol to the dog’s paw pads; apply ice packs to the groin area; hose down with water; allow the dog to lick ice chips or drink a small amount of water; offer Pedialyte to restore electrolytes; and check your dog’s temperature regularly during this process. Once the dog’s temperature has stabilized at between 100 to 102 degrees, you can stop the cool-down process. If you cannot get the dog cooled down and you begin to see signs of advanced heatstroke, take the dog to the veterinarian immediately. www.akc.org
