CY-SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL CY-SPRINGS PANTERA DANCE TEAM CAR WASH

JULY 4 TH SAFETY With warm weather and family events, the Fourth of July can be a fun time with great memories. But before your family celebrates, make sure everyone knows about fireworks safety. • Kids should never play with fireworks! • Buy only legal fireworks and store them in a cool, dry place. • Never try to make your own fireworks. • Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents. • Steer clear of others. Never throw or point fireworks at someone, even in jest. • Don’t hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting. Wear some sort of eye protection and avoid carrying fireworks in your pocket. • Point fireworks away from homes and keep away from brush and leaves and flammable substances. • Light one firework at a time (not in glass or metal containers) and never relight a dud. • Don’t allow kids to pick up pieces of fireworks after an event. Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in the trashcan. • Think about your pet. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they’ll run loose or get injured.

Happy Birthday America !!!

The Cypress Springs High School Pantera Dance Team Will be having a car wash Saturday, August 3rd, 9 AM - 3 PM in the Fuddruckers parking Lot (7250 Hwy. 6 North, Houston, TX 77095). By placing second in the statewide competition, Ali advanced to compete in the National History Day competition, held June 9th at the University of Maryland College Park campus. “Advancing to the National History Fair competition is a huge accomplishment and Maryam is the first student from CyLakes to go,” said Ashley Petry, world history team leader at Cypress Lakes. “Her time and efforts have paid off tremendously. This is a huge opportunity for her and I am so proud of and excited for her.” Additionally, Cypress Lakes students Kelley Fairman, Amanda Guerra and Veronica Leal won a distinguished achievement award in the Group Exhibit category. More than 1,000 students participate in the state-level History Day contest, which is the culmination of a yearlong education program for students in grades 6 - 12. It provides an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge of history, critical thinking, analytical reading, writing, presentation, media design and public performance skills through creative and original papers, performances, documentaries, websites or exhibits. 2

BUS BUDDIES, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2013 - 2014 SCHOOL YEAR

Come be a part of the “Bus Buddies Volunteer Program” in our Cypress-Fairbanks ISD schools. What is Bus Buddies? Bus Buddies is a partnership between the Cy-Fair community and CypressFairbanks Independent School District to provide assistance to elementary students helping them get off the bus at the correct location. The program requires one “Bus Buddy” per elementary bus the first three days of school. The approximate time commitment is from 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM on August 26th, 27th and 28th. You may choose to volunteer one, two or all three days. Your job is to simply assist the bus driver with

making sure the children get off the bus at their correct stops. What is Required? (1) Attend one of the training sessions, if not previously trained. (2) Arrive and sign in at your assigned school where campus staff will assist you. (3) Enjoy helping the kids and driver! When and Where is the 1 Hour Training? Training is held at our Berry Center located at 8877 Barker Cypress Rd., Cypress, TX. August 19th - 9:30 AM -10:30 AM August 20th - 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM (evening session) August 21st - 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM The Partners in Education (PIE) department is looking for the same strong Bus Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the Cy-Fair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. We do encourage all Bus Buddy volunteers to wear a shirt indicating the business or organization they are representing so that our employees, parents and the community will be aware of your organization’s support of CFISD. Volunteers wear many hats! We are askingYOU to wear the very important “Bus Buddy Hat” and support our number one priority goal - the safety and security of our students! Please, register for a training session and choose your school by visiting www.cfisd.net and selecting “Bus Buddies.” For additional information about the program, please contact the CFISD Partners in Education Department at 281-894-3949.

LOST YOUR PET?

Veterinary Public Health DIVISION (Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website. www.countypets.com.

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet

TIMELY TIPS FOR JULY GARDENERS Summer is upon us and your garden may be feeling the heat. Mulch can help your garden plants weather the summer heat and still thrive. REDUCE WATER USE Mulch provides several healthy benefits to Texas gardens in the summertime. One of the most well-known benefits of mulch is to reduce evaporation and water use. In the heat of summer conserving water can be particularly important. Mulch provides a softer layer covering the hard ground, which serves as to insulate the ground from the heat of the day and as a moisture

holding area after watering or rain. Water passes more easily into the mulch than into the hard ground giving the soil more time to absorb the water from the mulch layer rather than having the water runoff into the street. Mulch helps hold the moisture in the ground by reducing evaporation. More moisture in the ground reduces the temperature of the soil around plant roots. REGULATE SUB-SURFACE TEMPERATURES Another very important benefit to mulch in the heat of summer is regulation of ground temperature. A 3 to 4 inch blanket of mulch is excellent insulation, protecting the ground from direct sun and greatly reducing the temperature several inches below ground level. This is where your plants’ roots live, thrive and do the hard work of absorbing moisture and nutrients. They will be much healthier and more productive with the reduction in temperature that mulch provides. TYPES OF MULCH As for types of mulch, Cornelius Nursery recommend hardwood or cedar wood for most gardens. Some gardeners prefer pine mulch, but while it is somewhat less expensive, it also breaks down more

(281) 371-4888 quickly and will need to be reapplied frequently. Cedar is the most expensive of the three but does help reduce garden pests in some instances, due to its natural repellant properties.

To apply mulch, simply place it in the garden from the bag or with a shovel and carefully spread it around your plants by hand or with a rake. Mulch will reduce your water use, reduce the time required to weed, as well as reduce soil loss due to wind and runoff. Plus it will help your plants to thrive through the summer heat!

with below expected rainfall. While projections can be wrong, we need to be prepared if they are correct. Houston Department of Health and Human Services offers the information below on being safe in the heat. Remember that small children, older adults and those suffering long term illnesses are often the first to suffer from high heat situations. Know your neighbors and be sure to check on anyone who falls into the above categories. Be sure to check on outdoor pets as well. www.houstontx. gov/health/heatillness.html.

HOUSTON HEAT PRECAUTIONS AND WATER CONSERVATION

While the spring has been a bit cooler than normal and the beginning of June saw some wonderful rain, the projected outlook for rain during the rest of summer is not good. While last summer did not have many days over 100˚F, 2012 was still the hottest year on record for the cities of Houston and Galveston and Hobby Airport. (www. srh.noaa.gov/images/hgx/climate/ Annual_Climate_Article_2012.pdf). Based on their current charts, Houston is predicted to be very hot this summer 17

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
