HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB JUNE YARD OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Judy and Mickey Herrmann at 7114 Quail Field Drive. June’s Yard of the Month looks beautiful with white caladiums bordered by red begonias. This month’s Yard of the Month is a beautiful example of using colorful mass plantings in a residential landscape.
Caladiums are bulbs and begonias are annuals that thrive in our hot summers with a minimum of care. Both grow in light: sun, part sun or shade. Mass planting one color of the same kind of plant is an easy way to add color to your yard. Putting two mass plantings next to each other in contrasting colors or light against dark adds emphasis to your color choices. Consistent watering and dead heading tired blooms and leaves will keep the plants thriving and beautiful during our hot months. Enjoy your summer gardens.

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients - remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

The House and Senate successfully negotiated a two-year budget that will restore approximately $4 billion of the $5.4 billion in cuts to public education that were made by the 82nd Legislature in 2011. While the budget still needs to be approved by the full House and Senate and signed by the governor, this key negotiation between five members from each side is expected to be the basis for the new funding system through 2015. This is a huge step in the right direction for Texas public schools and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and I commend the members of the 83rd Legislature - specifically those within the CFISD delegation - who worked diligently to make this education budget replenishment happen. I would especially like to thank Sens. Dan Patrick, John Whitmire, Joan Huffman and Glenn Hegar and Reps. Patricia Harless, Allen Fletcher, Bill Callegari, Gary Elkins, Dwayne Bohac, Sylvester Turner and Jessica Farrar for using the power of their votes to keep our students’ best interests in mind. We have been fortunate in CFISD to maintain academic excellence amid financial constraints, but the additional infusion of money will be paramount as we seek to provide students with the best possible educational experience. Thank you for any feedback you gave to our local legislators that stressed the need for a properly funded education system in Texas. Although we didn’t recoup all of the money cut during the last biennium, we will be in much better shape moving forward. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D

BUS BUDDIES, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2013 - 2014 SCHOOL YEAR
Come be a part of the “Bus Buddies Volunteer Program” in our CypressFairbanks ISD schools. What is Bus Buddies? Bus Buddies is a partnership between the Cy-Fair community and CypressFairbanks Independent School District to provide assistance to elementary students helping them get off the bus at the correct location. The program requires one “Bus Buddy” per elementary bus the first three days of school. The approximate time commitment is from 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM on August 26th, 27th and 28th. You may choose to volunteer one, two or all three days. Your job is to simply assist the bus driver with making sure the children get off the bus at their correct stops. What is Required? (1) Attend one of the training sessions, if not previously trained. (2) Arrive and sign in at your assigned school where campus staff will assist you. (3) Enjoy helping the kids and driver!

August 19th - 9:30 AM -10:30 AM August 20th - 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM (evening session) August 21st - 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM The Partners in Education (PIE) department is looking for the same strong Bus Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the CyFair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. We do encourage all Bus Buddy volunteers to wear a shirt indicating the business or organization they are representing so that our employees, parents and the community will be aware of your organization’s support of CFISD. Volunteers wear many hats! We are askingYOU to wear the very important “Bus Buddy Hat” and support our number one priority goal - the safety and security of our students! Please, register for a training session and choose your school by visiting www.cfisd.net and selecting “Bus Buddies.” For additional information about the program, please contact the CFISD Partners in Education Department at 281-894-3949.

DCON 2013: CYPRESS FALLS IS NEVER AFRAID TO SERVE
The Cypress Falls Key Club recently attended the 2013 “Don’t Be Afraid to Serve” District Convention (DCON) in Dallas, Texas. Held at the Sheraton Hotel, DCON is a gathering of over 1,100 high school volunteers as well as 200 chaperones. “As soon as you arrive at the opulent Sheraton Hotel,” immediate past treasurer and current vice president Blake Jones said, “you are enveloped in a sense of unity and passion. Everyone there is just like you. Not in the sense that we all look or dress the same, but that everyone there wants to change the world and DCON is the place to get it done.” The participants spent the four-day event contributing to fun service activities, attending character-building workshops, competing in exciting contests and electing their leaders for the upcoming year. “DCON was such a life-changing experience this year,” immediate past president and current Lieutenant Governor Gabi Bradshaw said, “I learned so much about how to become a leader in my community and how to inspire members to serve. I also developed many new friendships with Key Clubbers from around Texas and Oklahoma.” Out of over 470 clubs in the Texas-Oklahoma district, nine of which are from CFISD, Cypress Falls was celebrated in the Top 25 Clubs as the fourth best Key Club. In addition, the individual members won numerous awards. Maryam Arjomandi was awarded for her service with a $1,000 scholarship, which will go toward the cost of her books and fees at the University of Texas next year. Mohammed Syed won first place for the Club Video while Sachit Saksena won first place for the District Project. Tashrima Hossain also took home first place for the Club Newsletter and third place in the Oratory contest. During the Texas vs. Oklahoma Quiz Bowl, Jones and Hannah Norem were two of the five students to represent Texas. After an intense match, Jones, Norem, Martin High School’s Osman Moneer, Bellaire High School’s Jenny Li and Lamar High School’s Gregory Ross were able to snag the Quiz Bowl title back from Oklahoma. Cypress Falls also earned three additional patches to add to their distinguished Key Club banner. The club won patches for participating in the Eliminate Project, an organization designed to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus, as well as the Governor’s B.R.O. Project, which concentrated on working with the Children’s Miracle Network. Moreover, Louis Kirkley won a patch for his Distinguished website (http://www.cyfallskey.me). “I am so proud to work with such an amazing group,” club sponsor Kathie Kiklas said, “They always go beyond what is asked of them. DCON is wonderful training to enhance leadership skills.”

Several Cypress Falls students were elected to divisional and district-level leadership positions for the upcoming school year. Bradshaw was elected as the Division 3N Lieutençant governor and she will serve as the head of Key Clubs throughout Cy-Fair and Katy. Roshni Chandwani not only coordinated the four-day weekend as the immediate past Convention Liaison, but she was also endorsed to run for International Trustee during the summer International Convention at Washington D.C. Hossain was elected as the District Editor and she will serve the District by creating bimonthly magazines and overseeing clubs’ publications during the 2013 - 2014 year. “District Convention was exquisite,” current president Amy Jiang said, “Perhaps ecstatic would be the word to show the feelings of our Key Club as we won numerous awards. Committed was our attitude as we grew stronger and better as a group. Inspiration sparked within us at the forums as we learned more about this international, monumental organization. Leaders, is what we came back from District Convention as.”

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Corners Service Unit is changing! Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is changing to a new “neighborhood” format. We will be combining with Blue Bonnet Meadows and Bear Creek Service units in the fall. Members from all three service units have been working together to make the transition run smoothly. We don’t have a name yet for our new group, but our troops have been submitting some great suggestions. Look for more information to come! Copper Corners would like to thank all our troop leaders, service team and especially our steering committee for all their hard work in the past year. We are looking forward to all the fun things we’re going to be doing next year! Girl Scout camp is on the horizon for many of our Copper Corners Girl Scouts. San Jacinto Council offers a variety of day, twilight and resident camps for Girl Scouts of all ages and interests. Camp is a great place to make new friends and learn new skills. Whether you are going through the “people washer” at day camp, making ‘smores at twilight camp or canoeing across the lake, you will have a great time with fellow Girl Scouts. The council website with information on all these camps is www.gssjc.org. Brownie troop 16451 finished up the year with a pool party and a special “Brownie Vest “cake. Daisy troop 16109 had a great time at Build a Bear. Some of the bears they brought back wore what looked like Daisy Girl Scout uniforms. Junior troop 16257 delivered their cookie share to Ronald McDonald house, where they made friends with a young resident who is waiting for a double lung transplant. This troop also wound up their Scouting year with a trip to a dude ranch in Bandera, TX. “Carousel” events at Council camps during the year are an opportunity to experience a variety of activities on a “themed” day or weekend. Troop 16149 attended the Princess Academy carousel event at Camp Robin wood and went canoeing. Brownie troop 16398 bridged and “flew up” to Junior Girl Scouts. They made commemorative plates at Color Me Mine and used their painted finger prints to make different

animals. Troop 16164 attended the Skeeters Girl Scout Sleepover baseball game at Constellation Field. The girls participated in special activates before the game. After the game they pitched their tents on the field for a movie and a sleepover. It was quite a night out! As you can see, Girl Scouts are active and they have fun! If you have ever thought of being a Girl Scout leader, summer is a great time to get started. Lots of training is available, but you only need a little (and a background check) to get started. We can’t have Girl Scout troops without leaders and our leaders come in all ages (over 18), kinds and interests. Some of us don’t even have children! If you have a skill and or an interest and or a desire to help, we’d love to talk to you. Please contact Dianne Massie at 281-550-9148 (Dianne.massie@att.net) for more information.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH
Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre.

CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www. mildredsumbrella.com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-4974904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK
The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.

Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. What volunteers can do to show that they care is everything from providing caregiver relief, being the friendly visitor with the smile, holding someone’s hand, providing that extra loving care and being a good listener. Volunteering can include music or pet therapy and much much more. All those interested in volunteering, please contact Adrienne Harris at adharris@odyshealth.com or 281-463-3697 (VistaCare).
ADOPT A US SOLDIER
Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.
