HOME SECURITY TIPS FOR SUMMER

Deputy Glentzer, of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department, continues to patrol Villages at Lakepointe. If you take a summer vacation, be sure to notify him before you leave. He will keep an eye on your property so you can relax and enjoy your vacation! Also, he has the following advice for all residents: • Please arm your alarm system during the day. Homes that are vulnerable to break-ins either have no alarms or have alarm systems that aren’t turned on. Most break-ins occur between 10 AM and 3 PM when homes are generally vacant. • Put yard signs provided by your alarm monitoring company in the front yard so that they are readily visible. • Use timers for lighting that are automatically set to come on if you are going to be away. • Get to know your neighbors. Notice what vehicles belong to what house. Let your neighbors know if you plan to be away for an extended time. All vehicles belonging to residents of Villages at Lakepointe should display a blue sticker on the front windshield. If you are in need of a sticker, please contact AMI at 713-932-1122. • If you will be gone for an extended period of time, please notify Deputy Glentzer. He is always out and about in the neighborhood. Feel free to introduce yourself or give him a call. • Should you see anything suspicious, please call Deputy Glentzer or 911 immediately.

BECOME AN MVP AT VLP!

Consider volunteering for parties or events in our community. With the great ideas of so many residents, we can continue to host fun and exciting events for all to enjoy. Please contact AMI or any of your Board Members to get started.

DEED RESTRICTIONS

While we all love home improvements, please be sure to obtain approval prior to beginning. A complete list of the deed restrictions can be found on the website, as well as through AMI. Things such as landscaping, painting or staining, mailboxes and additions such as sheds are on the list. The architectural committee enforces deed restrictions at all times and is taken very seriously. Some simple things that help keep our neighborhood beautiful are: • Keeping your grass cut regularly, bushes trimmed and beds free of weeds • Keeping tree limbs trimmed high enough so that people walking do not get hurt and street signs can be easily seen • Keeping fences stained with the approved colors** **Currently a specific item that will AMI will be looking for. Please note that AMI will be sending letters to residents that are noncompliant. These deed restrictions are mandatory, not a choice! By complying with the guidelines, we maintain a consistently beautiful neighborhood. Plus, it helps property values!

THE LIBERTY BELL, THE BELL’S MESSAGE

The Liberty Bell’s inscription conveys a message of liberty, which goes beyond the words themselves. Since the bell was made, the words of the inscription have meant different things to different people. When William Penn created Pennsylvania’s government he allowed citizens to take part in making laws and gave them the right to choose the religion they wanted. The colonists were proud of the freedom that Penn gave them. In 1751, the Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly ordered a new bell for the State House. He asked that a Bible verse to be placed on the bell - “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10). As the official bell of the Pennsylvania State House (today called Independence Hall) it rang many times for public announcements, but we remember times like July 8, 1776 when it rang to announce the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. The old State House bell was first called the “Liberty Bell” by a group trying to outlaw slavery. These abolitionists remembered the words on the bell and, in the 1830’s, adopted it as a symbol of their cause. Beginning in the late 1800’s, the Liberty Bell traveled around the country to expositions and fairs to help heal the divisions of the Civil War. It reminded Americans of their earlier days when they fought and worked together for independence. In 1915, the bell made its last trip and came home to Philadelphia, where it now silently reminds us of the power of liberty. For more than 200 years people from around the world have felt the bell’s message. No one can see liberty, but people have used the Liberty Bell to represent this important idea.

713-896-9700 10 WAYS TO STAY HYDRATED THIS SUMMER

While it’s always a good idea to stay hydrated, it’s especially important when the temps of Summer start rising. Whether you’re spending your vacation camping and hiking or just doing more outdoor daily activities like biking and walking, I’ve got some tips for how you can stay hydrated during the warm weather months. • Eat your water. Chowing down on water-filled foods like watermelon, is an easy and refreshing way to keep hydrated. • Swap soda for sparkling water. If you’re trying to kick a soda habit, sparkling water is a healthy, but still fizzy, alternative. • Hydrate before exercising. Be sure to drink water before exercising to maximize your workout. • Drink water on the plane. If you’re traveling this Summer, don’t forget to drink up the H2O on the plane. • Stay hydrated at work. Even when working indoors, it’s important to keep the fluids handy. • There are five more ways, so read more. • Drink water before meals. By drinking water before meals, not only will you stay hydrated but you’re less likely to overeat. • Have enough on hand. When you’re spending the day camping or biking, it’s important to bring enough water to last the trip. • Spice it up with healthy flavoring. If you’re having a hard time getting enough water, spice it up with some natural flavoring. • Keep track of your daily water intake. Try this tasty and handy way to keep track of your H2O intake. • Keep a reusable bottle with you. Having a water bottle with you at all times is the easiest way to stay hydrated without even thinking about it.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDANT

The House and Senate successfully negotiated a two-year budget that will restore approximately $4 billion of the $5.4 billion in cuts to public education that were made by the 82nd Legislature in 2011. While the budget still needs to be approved by the full House and Senate and signed by the governor, this key negotiation between five members from each side is expected to be the basis for the new funding system through 2015. This is a huge step in the right direction for Texas public schools and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and I commend the members of the 83rd Legislature - specifically those within the CFISD delegation who worked diligently to make this education budget replenishment happen. I would especially like to thank Sens. Dan Patrick, John Whitmire, Joan Huffman and Glenn Hegar and Reps. Patricia Harless, Allen Fletcher, Bill Callegari, Gary Elkins, Dwayne Bohac, Sylvester Turner and Jessica Farrar for using the power of their votes to keep our students’ best interests in mind. We have been fortunate in CFISD to maintain academic excellence amid financial constraints, but the additional infusion of money will be paramount as we seek to provide students with the best possible educational experience. Thank you for any feedback you gave to our local legislators that stressed the need for a properly funded education system in Texas. Although we didn’t recoup all of the money cut during the last biennium, we will be in much better shape moving forward. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D

Throughout our 33-year history we have had over 130,000 injured, orphaned or ill wildlife pass through the hands of our caring volunteers. We provide veterinary care for injured animals and coordinated placement of wildlife with appropriately skilled and permitted rehabilitators, who care for wildlife until it can be safely released back into its native habitat. TWRC also provides a truly unique variety of educational outreach programs for the community we serve and two on-site rehabilitation programs to engage the public in helping care for wildlife during our busiest months. Please join us, Saturday, July 13th, for a fun night at Texas’ Oldest Craft Brewery and help TWRC Wildlife Center make a difference for wildlife in need! MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH

Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 - Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
