NEWS FROM THE RESIDENT HOA BOARD MEMBER HI WESTGATERS! Summer is in full swing! I hope you are enjoying our pool and parks. The pool committee is still planning on adding to our reserve areas in the newer sections of the neighborhood; if you have any ideas on that, check out the Committee Corner further down and look under the parks/pool committee section. We are adding trash cans to the main park, a couple of benches in the new park area that connects Westgate Park Dr. to section 14 and we are discussing places to add dog waste containers to discourage leaving pet waste behind while walking our pets. By the time you read this, we will hopefully have begun our projects to maintain our wood and metal fences with staining and painting. Much like you do with home maintenance projects, it’s the HOA’s responsibility to keep up the appearance of the neighborhood. The ad hoc committee and I went through a detailed process of evaluating bids for this project. If you spot any areas that need our attention, please let us know by emailing the BGoard at westgatehoa@yahoo. com or calling VanMor at 832-593-7300. At the beginning of summer, we sustained some damage to our park’s gazebo and on a couple of other places in our parks through vandalism. Thanks to residents quick reporting of it, we were able to fix the issues quickly, which is really the best way to deter this kind of behavior. Often, if they can’t admire their “handiwork,” these kinds of vandals lose interest. To further thwart the future cost, we applied anti-graffiti stain to the gazebo. Even with this kind of event, Westgate is known to our law enforcement to be one of the safest and most quiet communities around. At time of publication, July 4th hadn’t happened yet, but I’d like to take a moment to thank the volunteers in general for their help. We will have photos available on Westgate’s Facebook group page: www.facebook.com/groups/WestgateSubdivision/. We’ll have results and info. in the August newsletter.

As a response to notes from residents, I’d like to highlight some pool rules to remember: • Wear proper swimwear, not every day clothes: some materials help clog the filter. • No foul language. • No rowdiness or rough play. • No alcohol allowed. • No smoking allowed. • Lifeguards have the ultimate authority; follow their instructions. Failure to do so may result in suspension of your pool privileges.

It’s time again for our Westgate Garage Sale; this year, the summer event will happen on Saturday, August 10th. So while you’re spring cleaning, go through that extra “stuff” you have in your closets, declutter your house and make some extra money! That week, we’ll have signs out at the entrances of the neighborhood to advertise the event for the community. You can put additional signs to direct people to your house, but please remove them after your sale is over.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
Every May, many of us take steps to prepare our families and our business for the seasonal threats posed by hurricanes and other inclement weather. If you live in a coastal county, (Harris County is classified as a coastal county) you are encouraged to prepare a basic emergency kit to provide essential needs when the risk posed by hurricanes threatens the availability of those needs. To begin your preparations, visit the link below or assemble your own kit with the following considerations: • What is your plan for surviving a severe weather event? Does it include meeting locations/alternate locations, insurance information, phone numbers and a basic needs kit for 3 days? • Where is your alternate shelter located pre, during and post evacuation? • Do you have enough water for each family member to hydrate regularly, wash clothes and dishes or meet your hygienic needs? • Do you able to provide food, fuel, fire for your family assuming no stores are open? • Do you have a first aid kit, with medications and are you properly trained to administer aid? www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/ready.php\ FEMA Private Sector Resilience Tip 6/3/13: Help your business prepare for severe weather like hurricanes with weather alerts, social media tips and tools. http://go.usa.gov/bWbR.

ANOTHER FACET OF PREPAREDNESS: KEEP LIFE IN YOUR FOOD STORAGE
With the outlook for storms and hurricanes on the rise this year, individuals should consider every facet when planning for an emergency including food storage. All living things must eat to stay healthy, so you may think that the foods you store must be of the highest nutritional content. While nutrition is very important, it is not the single most important thing to be concerned about when storing food. Your food storage program must be designed to sustain life. Here are a few suggestions for keeping life in your food storage program: • Store food in food grade containers that can be tightly sealed to keep bugs and moisture out; • Keep food, even when tightly sealed, away from gasoline, kerosene, chemicals or household cleaning products; • Store appropriate items as cold (45-55°) as possible for maximum shelf life; • Rotate food every five years and • Have oxygen absorbers such as bay leaves and dry ice on hand. They can be effective in keeping bugs away. Safe regards, David Vaughn, Crime Watch Chair Westgate Community
CRIME WATCH UPDATE FROM THE CHAIR
During the month of May and early June, several residents were victims of theft. Specifically owners of GMC products (Cadillac, Chevy, GMC) were surprised to learned the rims and tires on their automobiles were removed leaving them without a form a transportation. Obviously the victimization is scary enough, but look at the financial loss of not only time off from work, but also the cost for replacing the rims and tires. This information has been shared with HCSO and individually communicated with our ‘assigned’ deputies. Tips and suggestions for combating illegal activity is as follows: • Report it using the “URGENT ALERT” feature on nextdoor.com. (Contact me to be added to the forum.)
Westgate
Whiten teeth fast with the scientifically advanced Teeth Whitening System.
• Report suspicious activity to the Sheriff 713-221-6000. Reports generate stats, which allows law enforcement to make a more informed decision for committing resources to crime prevention efforts. • Report light outages. Crimes occur when opportunities (darkness) is abundant. • Participate in community based forums such as nextdoor.com and learn what is happening where you live. • Get involved, drive change, show pride for your community! In conclusion many challenges have been presented that strain our community and shape our perceptions of community safety. To brighten your spirits, I challenge you to do the research and speak with your sheriff’s department. You will be pleasantly surprised to learn the Westgate Community continues to be measurably safer than surrounding areas to include Copperfield. Understandably, one must consider the size of our neighborhood in comparison to others; however, our community awareness programs, maintenance and improvements continue to be the most visible lead measures in crime prevention and reduction. SUGGESTIONS FROM A NEIGHBOR TO AVOID WATER DAMAGE IN YOUR HOUSE
On our Westgate Facebook page recently, resident James Fontenot gave us a heads-up about a way to save us some damage to our houses so we wouldn’t have to go through what he recently endured: “This is a neighborly warning to all those home owners who wish to avoid having rain coming directly into their attic from the various holes in our roofs. The holes serve a purpose, venting bad stuff created inside to the outside. You likely have 5 or 6 pvc pipes sticking out of your roof. They are the short black (painted) pipes with a round black base. I had one removed from my roof this week. I noticed a small water stain forming on my ceiling and traced it to this base, which was cracked wide open, allowing nature into my attic. These rubber bases are made to last 10 years or so in our climate. The quality is likely very poor, given that the builders skimp on things like this (out of sight, out of mind). So if your house is 10+ years old, I would have a roof inspection done. At the very least, they can do some preventive maintenance like resealing around the edges and nail holes.”

If you haven’t yet paid your Westgate fees for 2013, be sure to call VanMor (832-593-7300) to discuss payment before more fees are tacked on - from the attorney, interest, etc. $600 can turn into $1,000 very quickly. Even if you don’t think you can pay all at once, you need to call VanMor to make payment arrangements; don’t wait and cost yourself more money. Many residents took advantage of the PrePayment Coupon Plan that we began in 2012, for the payment of 2013 dues. It was an excellent way to spread out the cost over four months. Now I’d like to encourage residents to take advantage of prepaying over most of this year for next year’s dues, so you don’t have to be burdened by one big payment at the end of the year; some residents have been doing this for a few years. You can arrange for automatic withdrawals from your checking account each month at www.vanmor.com, VanMor’s website. You can pay in installments online by accessing VanMor’s website, type in “Westgate,” select autopay (not “make a payment”) and set it up with a checking account for only a $2 fee/payment; this is for prepaying next year’s dues. At the Annual Meeting in March, Lynette Rink of VanMor also commented that partial checks for PREPAYMENT OF DUES are accepted before the final due date.

AJ and Cassie sent back a photo of the donation site in Moore, saying “Made it to Moore. Everything dropped off. Watched as locals gladly accepted our items.” 100% of it went to help the survivors of the tornado. Thanks to the generosity of these neighbors!

WESTGATE NEIGHBORS DONATE GOODS TO TORNADO SURVIVORS
In June, AJ Hutchinson and Cassie Jo Hagan, residents of Westgate, decided to travel to Moore, Oklahoma, while on a trip to Nebraska. They decided to donate some clothes and other items to the tornado survivors of that area and offered to collect goods from other Westgate residents who also wanted to help. They met people up at the pool parking lot to gather the items and also went to people’s homes when requested. They accepted anything except perishables. Before long, they had a truck full of boxes and bags! Before leaving on June 6th, they said, “The truck is loaded and ready to go with everyone’s donations! Great job coming together neighbors. Our donation may be a needle in the haystack, but these things will mean the world to someone.”

DO YOU KNOW YOUR DEED RESTRICTIONS?
In an effort to educate our residents, each month we highlight some deed restriction or other item that needs improvement in Westgate:
PUTTING AWAY TRASH CANS - OUT OF SIGHT!
According to our deed restrictions, trash/trash cans should only be outside the evening before collection and the cans must be “removed from sight” the same evening of collection. They must not be “exposed to public view or exposed to view from adjacent Homesites.” See the Westgate Deed Restrictions, “Declaration of Covenants, Conditions, Restrictions and Easements for Westgate Subdivision,” page 13-14. Why is this important? Besides improving the overall look of the neighborhood, this helps with property values when appraisals are done in Westgate on homes for sale. You’ll want your neighbors to do that for you when you want to sell; do your part to help now. It may not seem like much, but every little bit helps to keep our neighborhood an attractive place. Additionally, little things like visible trash cans can hurt the overall impression and discourage people from keeping up their yards. Copies of all Westgate founding documents (including the ARC form) can be downloaded from the Westgate website www.westgatetx. com, they are located under the HOA tab.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

The House and Senate successfully negotiated a two-year budget that will restore approximately $4 billion of the $5.4 billion in cuts to public education that were made by the 82nd Legislature in 2011. While the budget still needs to be approved by the full House and Senate and signed by the governor, this key negotiation between five members from each side is expected to be the basis for the new funding system through 2015. This is a huge step in the right direction for Texas public schools and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and I commend the members of the 83rd Legislature - specifically those within the CFISD delegation who worked diligently to make this education budget replenishment happen. I would especially like to thank Sens. Dan Patrick, John Whitmire, Joan Huffman and Glenn Hegar and Reps. Patricia Harless, Allen Fletcher, Bill Callegari, Gary Elkins, Dwayne Bohac, Sylvester Turner and Jessica Farrar for using the power of their votes to keep our students’ best interests in mind. We have been fortunate in CFISD to maintain academic excellence amid financial constraints, but the additional infusion of money will be paramount as we seek to provide students with the best possible educational experience. Thank you for any feedback you gave to our local legislators that stressed the need for a properly funded education system in Texas. Although we didn’t recoup all of the money cut during the last biennium, we will be in much better shape moving forward. Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D

COPELAND STUDENTS DONATE MORE THAN 180 PAIRS OF SNEAKERS TO HAITI
Students from Cy-Fair and Langham Creek high schools collected more than 180 pairs of shoes from Copeland Elementary School to push CFISD’s collection totals to nearly 1,100 pairs of sneakers for Haitian schoolchildren through the New Missions program GiveSneakers. com. Copeland’s drive ran from May 1st - 15th and combined with donations from Lowery Elementary School, Salyards Middle School and Langham Creek and Cy-Fair high schools, students shattered their initial goal of 900 pairs of sneakers. “When we first made our goal, we thought we might be overshooting it,” said Langham Creek sophomore Marin Anderson, who helped round up sneakers along with Langham Creek sophomore Andrew Hadad and Cy-Fair junior Blake Hayes. “I think the students here are very excited because they haven’t had a lot of opportunities like this yet. Their response has been phenomenal.” Copeland principal Michelle Rice, who coincided the shoe drive as part of the school’s monthly community outreach program, Copeland Cares, said she was not surprised by the outpouring of support. “The Copeland community is a very giving and generous community,” Rice said. “I am impressed with all the leadership we are developing within our students in Cy-Fair. We’re helping them look to the outside and this is a generation of children who want to be counted on by others.” Hayes helped launch the shoe drive last month with the support of his mother, Langham Creek director of instruction Rebecca Hayes. The Hayes family had visited Haiti over spring break and seen firsthand the impact that quality footwear can have on the academic success of children in the impoverished country. “I’m very impressed with these students at Copeland. I don’t think they even understand the huge impact they’ve already made for children in Haiti,” Hayes said. “These 180-odd pairs of shoes can go so far down there; they’re a ticket for the children to be allowed to attend school. I can’t wait to go back and see the impact that this shoe drive has made for them.”

We provide veterinary care for injured animals and coordinated placement of wildlife with appropriately skilled and permitted rehabilitators, who care for wildlife until it can be safely released back into its native habitat. TWRC also provides a truly unique variety of educational outreach programs for the community we serve and two on-site rehabilitation programs to engage the public in helping care for wildlife during our busiest months. Please join us, Saturday, July 13th, for a fun night at Texas’ Oldest Craft Brewery and help TWRC Wildlife Center make a difference for wildlife in need! FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella.com - info@ mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

It includes Dixieland Jazz, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Country Western, Broadway (with our special emphasis on ‘Sound of Music”) and Patriotic music. All proudly “Made in the USA!!” Our group welcomes singers, dancers, instrumentalists and “Ham’s” and creates an hour of musical entertainment for the audience. (We love audience participation!) HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK
During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.
Learn Day or Night.
Online or On Campus. LSC-CyFair offers affordable and flexible options: Associate degrees, workforce certificates and more!
The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH
Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 - Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.

GIRL SCOUTS OF AMERICA TURNS 101!
LAWN MAINTENANCE
Girls Scout across the country and around the world are celebrating a new century of leadership in Girl Scouts! This is the organization’s 101st year. Girl Scouts of America was founded in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia by a woman who was determined to empower young women and help teach them values. Juliet Low, started her first Girl Scout troop at her home in Savannah. It is now a museum and home of the national headquarters. Girl Scouts all over the planet invite you to take action this summer and volunteer, recycle, conserve, explore, teach and make the world a better place!
GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Corners Service Unit is changing! Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is changing to a new “neighborhood” format. We will be combining with Blue Bonnet Meadows and Bear Creek Service units in the fall. Members from all three service units have been working together to make the transition run smoothly. We don’t have a name yet for our new group, but our troops have been submitting some great suggestions. Look for more information to come!

Copper Corners would like to thank all our troop leaders, service team and especially our steering committee for all their hard work in the past year. We are looking forward to all the fun things we’re going to be doing next year! Girl Scout camp is on the horizon for many of our Copper Corners Girl Scouts. San Jacinto Council offers a variety of day, twilight and resident camps for Girl Scouts of all ages and interests. Camp is a great place to make new friends and learn new skills. Whether you are going through the “people washer” at day camp, making ‘smores at twilight camp or canoeing across the lake, you will have a great time with fellow Girl Scouts. The council website with information on all these camps is www.gssjc.org. Brownie troop 16451 finished up the year with a pool party and a special “Brownie Vest “cake. Daisy troop 16109 had a great time at Build a Bear. Some of the bears they brought back wore what looked like Daisy Girl Scout uniforms. Junior troop 16257 delivered their cookie share to Ronald McDonald house, where they made friends with a young resident who is waiting for a double lung transplant. This troop also wound up their Scouting year with a trip to a dude ranch in Bandera, TX. “Carousel” events at Council camps during the year are an opportunity to experience a variety of activities on a “themed” day or weekend. Troop 16149 attended the Princess Academy carousel event at Camp Robin wood and went canoeing. Brownie troop 16398 bridged and “flew up” to Junior Girl Scouts. They made commemorative plates at Color Me Mine and used their painted finger prints to make different animals. Troop 16164 attended the Skeeters Girl Scout Sleepover baseball game at Constellation Field. The girls participated in special activates before the game. After the game they pitched their tents on the field for a movie and a sleepover. It was quite a night out! As you can see, Girl Scouts are active and they have fun! If you have ever thought of being a Girl Scout leader, summer is a great time to get started. Lots of training is available, but you only need a little (and a background check) to get started. We can’t have Girl Scout troops without leaders and our leaders come in all ages (over 18), kinds and interests. Some of us don’t even have children! If you have a skill and or an interest and or a desire to help, we’d

Hunter Britsch and his sister Karsyn perform at a fundraising concert in his backyard benefiting CAM.
July 2013
Westgate
Boy Scout’s music concert fundraiser earns nearly $1,000 for CAM When Hunter Britsch, a sixteen-year-old sophomore at Cy-Ranch High School and Fairfield resident, began planning his Boy Scout Eagle Project fundraiser, he wisely decided to tap into his own musical talent as a singer-songwriter. The result was an extraordinary music concert held on May 18th in Britsch’s own back yard that was attended by over 100 people. Performed by a unique ensemble of professional and amateur musicians, the concert raised almost $1,000 for Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM). Donations of more than 50 pounds of non-perishable food items and toiletries were also collected at the concert and given to CAM. Britsch is a member of Explorer Post 1475 sponsored by the Fairfield Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Performing at the concert were two professional musicians, Abbey Hickman and Rod Branch and one former professional musician, Lisa Hickman, who played along with five accomplished musicians from Cy-Ranch High School, one Salyards Middle School vocalist and Britsch. A professional photographer, Lloyd Toby Dawson, volunteered to take pictures at the event. Refreshments for the audience were prepared by eight members of Explorer Post 1475. Michael Lucas emceed the concert. The concert, however, was only the beginning. It was followed on Saturday, May 25th, by a service project to resuscitate the landscaping at CAM’s pantry. Britsch walked the grounds, took pictures and made plans. He was able to recruit 19 volunteers to clean up and beautify the grounds and the materials were purchased with funds raised by the concert. Britsch would like to make the concert an annual event. Submitted by Chris Fults Photo provided by Lloyd Toby Dawson (with permission)

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
REMINDER OF HARRIS COUNTY BANNING OF SALE OF ANIMALS ALONG PUBLIC ROADS
In 2007, Harris County moved to ban sales of animals along public roads and parking lots in unincorporated areas. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor which can mean a $500 fine.

SPECIAL PALS SUMMER CARE FOR ANIMALS
Special Pals Shelter wants to remind you to keep your animals hydrated and cool this summer. Leave your pets indoors as much as possible, since there’s no guarantee on how much shade they’ll get being left in the yard. Never leave your pet in the car; it only takes a few minutes for your animal to be exposed to deadly heat stroke, even if the windows are cracked! If you take your dog out for walks or runs, be sure to bring a bowl and a container of water and only exert them in the hours when the temps are lowest. Checks may also be sent to: Special Pals 3830 Greenhouse Road Houston, TX 77084 Houston area for over 30 years. For more information, contact us by email (clinic@specialpalsshelter.org), phone (281-579-7387) or stop by our facility at 3830 Greenhouse Road (Houston, TX 77084).

Our hope is to intervene and intercept before a Dachshund ever ends up in a shelter in the first place!
DREAM has submitted application for our 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation, which we expect to receive soon. All donations, no matter the amount, go a long way to providing necessary medical care and supplies required to further DREAM efforts of rescuing as many Dachshunds as we can!
We are very passionate about the Dachshund breed and the health and well-being of each and every Dachshund we encounter is at the forefront of our mission. This is what drives our volunteerism and commitment to DREAM, as our sole purpose is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home Dachshunds in need of a second chance at life and love.

PET HOTLINE NEWS
Too many pets are getting out without any form of ID and collars. The shelters are filled up and will euthanize within 24 hrs. This happened to someone’s pet in Deerfield. Please put a collar and phone # on your pet. I will be happy to call the owner if you find a pet and let them know that it should have been kept in a safe environment. I do know that there are circumstances whereby a gate is ajar or a utility person leaves it open after checking the meter and that pet gets out. You can reach the county website at www.countypets.com and their phone number is 713-999-3191. Remember thunder and fireworks are reasons why dogs bolt from their yards. Help keep them safe. Looking for players to formulate a Bunco Club. If you don’t know how to play Bunco, that would not be a problem – it is just a roll of the dice. The best benefit is meeting lots of people just like yourselves, who want to enjoy an evening out, to enjoy the camaraderie of the other women, to get away from all the everyday stress. We would usually play about 2 hours an evening and another hour for eating and mingling, etc. It would be once a month, I am hoping to get at least 12 women who can play Saturday night. If Saturday night doesn’t work out, we could always select some other night. When you commit to this game, if you can’t make it on any particular night, it is your responsibility to get a sub to sit in for you. So if you can’t be a regular member, you may be interested in becoming a sub. Please call 281-682-1750 or send an email to: taylil3511@yahoo. com if you’re interested. Please state your name, contact information (please include an email address) and what night of the week you would be able to play.

BUNCO FOR FUN

The Cy-Fair Community Band was initiated about three years ago, with approximately five or six musicians coming together to explore their common interest in music and their enjoyment of playing together. They have grown to 33 members who just love to play music and share their talents for the enjoyment they get from playing. They have evolved into an accomplished group of band members and have recently changed their name to Sounds of Cypress. DeeDee Flores is director of group. By day she is a band director at Plummer Middle School. Her ability has led the group to develop polished performances, which they are anxious to share. This accomplished group is ready to perform for group events. They have a great program of musical selections. Also, they can tailor their selections to the interests age of your group. Children, teens and adults will enjoy the music of the Sounds of Cypress Band. For more information, email the director, DeeDee Flores at ddftex@aol.com or call her at 713-410-8051.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
