WILDLIFE If you find a baby bobcat that you think is orphaned, please get it to a rehabilitator immediately. Put it in a pet carrier or box, away from pets, people, children and household activity. Keep it covered and do not handle it no matter how cute it is. These animals can easily become imprinted on its human caretakers. Please do not attempt to feed it. When we receive an orphaned bobcat into our care, every effort is made to get it with another baby to help avoid habituation. Handling is kept to a minimum and talking and visual contact is avoided whenever possible. Bobcats are roughly twice the size of an average housecat. The cat is named for its tail, which appears to be cut or “bobbed.” Having a bobcat (or any purebred exotic cat) as a pet in Texas is illegal. Each year, these cats are confiscated from their owners and we have to find new homes for them at licensed sanctuaries. Many of these illegal “pets” have unpredictable personalities. A seemingly friendly cat may want its head or back scratched one minute and then want to bite or swat your hand the next. This makes these cats difficult to place as no one wants to put their animal keepers at risk of injury. Both male and female bobcats spray and have razor sharp claws. Bobcats are shy and illusive. They are most active at night since that is when their prey is most available. They provide great rodent control but often succumb to poisoning from eating dying rats and mice that have been poisoned by humans. These beautiful creatures are often seen by ranch owners where the rodent and rabbit populations are abundant. They live solitary lives except when a mother gives birth. Bobcats do not typically pose a threat to humans and even a small child just doesn’t resemble a tasty bunny. As long as a bobcat has an escape route, it will always choose to avoid human confrontation. However, if cornered, it will not back down and will defend itself aggressively. TWRC Wildlife Center has two locations to accept injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife-Houston and The Woodlands. For more information and hours of operation, see www.twrcwildlifecenter.org or call 713-468-8972.

CC Building by Design, LLC BEE-WARY, BEE-SAFE THIS SUMMER With summer, the Canyon Gate HOA would like to remind folks that as weather warms bee infestation can be a problem for residents. Bee and wasp colonies can be a hazard to homes and neighbors especially those with small children or the elderly. Homeowners that see bees coming and going likely have a colony, which will continue to grow if not removed. The larger the colony, the likelihood for danger increases. Moreover, greater expense can be incurred for removal and potential liability to homeowners. Inspect Your Property • Listen for buzzing and look for bees entering or leaving the same area indicating a nest or swarm of bees. • Examine work areas prior to using noisy power equipment such as lawn mowers, weed cutters and chain saws. • Examine areas for bees before tying up or penning pets. • Never disturb a swarm or colony of bees - contact a bee removal service or pest control company. • Teach children to be cautious around and respectful to all bees. • If you know you are allergic to bee stings check with your doctor about a sting kit. Bee-proof your property • Inspect outside walls and eves of your house and other buildings. • Seal openings greater than one-eighth inch in diameter (1/8-inch) in walls, around chimneys, masonry, pluming and any other openings. • Install screens (1/8-inch hardware cloth) over rain spouts, vents, cavities of trees and fence posts, water meter, utility boxes, etc. • From spring through fall inspect 1-2 times per week for bee activity around your house and yard. What to do if you discover a bee infestation • Do not disturb a swarm or colony. • Bees should not be allowed to live in a house or other structure. The longer a colony lives in a structure the more

August 2013

Canyon Gate @CR

defensive they will become and the more costly removal and repair will become. • Call a professional bee removal service or pest control operator. Potential Bee nesting sites: Bees will choose a nesting site in many places where people may disturb them. Nesting cavities may include: buckets, cans, empty boxes, old tires or any container ranging in volume from as little as 2 to 10 gallons and more. Bees will also choose infrequently used vehicles, lumber piles, holes and cavities in fences, trees, even in the ground, in sheds, garages and other outbuildings between walls or in the open, low decks or spaces under buildings. Like all living organisms, honey bees need water for hydration. This becomes especially evident during hot dry weather when natural sources dry up and bees begin to collect water from sources close to people and domestic animals. We all want to help bees survive but sometimes that’s just not practical, especially when children are competing with bees for water. Bees will collect water where ever it can be found. It could be from a dirty puddle, a pond, a brook, your swimming pool, irrigation system, birdbath, dripping outdoor faucet, etc. Tips on keeping bees away from pools When you first notice bees around your pool, spray them with a soap-water solution. Soap-water solution: Mix 1 part dish soap to 4 parts water in spray bottle.
Spray all bees around your pool with this solution. The soap-water solution will kill the bees but doesn’t leave a harmful residue like an insecticide. Spray every bee until no bees return for at least one day. This will kill those water foragers telling others in the colony where your swimming pool is located. Eventually, you will kill all those bees foraging at your pool and prevent them from telling others about your pool. Other water foragers will find a different source of water, so don’t worry. It’s unlikely your pool is the only source of water within foraging distance. In reality you’re only eliminating a very small proportion of the foraging population and an even smaller proportion of the total colony population.

PARK USAGE

The mild weather has allowed many people to take advantage of our park fields on a regular basis, which is great. However, those utilizing the fields must be mindful of the homes along the park and be sure they are not causing any nuisance to the residents. We have already received complaints from nearby residents about noise and trash being left behind. Being mindful means keeping noise to a minimum (no cheerleaders or PA/amplification systems, loud music, etc.), no street parking or speeding near the park, and making sure all garbage has been picked up and placed in trash receptacles prior to leaving. DO NOT PLACE TRASH IN THE RECYCLING BINS - RECYCLING BINS ARE FOR RECYCLING ONLY. Use of our park is a privilege - we want our residents to be able to enjoy it, but not to the detriment of those living nearby.

HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS

Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement.com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problemfree residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns. Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordi-

ANIMALS / PETS CONTROL Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space….. remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. Animal control can be reached by calling 281342-1512 and will pick up strays and/or unconfined pets.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST • Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY
AUGUST 9 - 11, 2013 The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of the this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9th - 11th, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained at www.window.state.tx.us/ taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d/, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.

Have your child enjoy the experience and be positive! • Read as a family so kiddos will get into the reading mode. Kids lose their ability to learn most during the summer months. Refresh their skills! • Start winding down the family gatherings, get-togethers and activities and focus on the family. • Lead by example.

The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.

3. Comfort, convenience and safety are important. Features to look for include wide, padded, contoured shoulder straps that distribute the pack’s load over a large area of the shoulder, an abdominal strap, which can help distribute the pack’s weight evenly on the back, waist and hips and reflectors or reflective fabrics on the pack to add visibility when kids travel to and from school at dusk or dawn.

HOW TO CHOOSE A BACKPACK FOR BACK TO SCHOOL When shopping for a backpack for your child, keep these guidelines in mind: 1. Inspect before you invest. Check carefully for: • Sloppy stitching or loose threads, which can indicate poor manufacturing • Raw, exposed fabric edges, which can fray and weaken the fabric and possibly get stuck in the zipper • Zippers without covering fabric flaps. In our rain test, zippers that were not protected by flaps of fabric allowed water to seep in. 2. One size does not fit all. Ideally, the bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back and not be more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack’s shoulder-strap anchor points should also rest 1 to 2 inches below the top of the shoulders.

12

4. Prevent injury with a lighter load. To prevent discomfort and injury, load and wear the backpack correctly. The American Occupational Therapy Association recommends carrying no more than 15 percent of your body weight in a backpack. But the less you carry, the better for your back. Visit www.consumerreports.org for more information on chosing the right backpack for your child.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride.
 • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas.

• It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop.

• Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency.

• Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO.

Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. Visit www.missingkids.com for even more back to school safety tips.

• Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.”
 • Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them.
 • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults.

KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG August 26th First Day of School! KATY ISD PARTNERS IN EDUCATION A world of thanks from Partners in Education! 18,560 community and parent volunteers walked into KATY ISD classrooms and made a difference! You rock and we say, “Thank You!”

KATY ISD PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON Katy ISD is preparing for tropical weather hazards and the 2013 hurricane season that officially began June 1st. The district reminds families to prepare, as well by making a plan, putting together a hurricane survival kit and staying informed. The Houston region has many helpful resources to guide students, parents and school personnel through these three steps. “In order for Katy ISD to be ready for storms, we need our community to be informed and prepared,” said John Bremer, Katy ISD emergency management coordinator. “Prepared families help by allowing us time to close schools and secure the buildings well ahead of any impending threats. If families are prepared, then we can make better decisions about school operations.” The Texas Department of State Health Services has a number of tools for families to use, including a brochure on Hurricane Preparedness, an emergency supply checklist and a video on surviving disasters. The Ready Houston regional preparedness page also has helpful information on how to prepare for disasters, including hurricanes at: www.readyhoustontx.gov. “Make a plan, put together a survival kit and stay informed are three steps Katy ISD uses to prepare for hurricane season; these are the same steps students, parents and school personnel can use to be ready,” added Bremer.

Canyon Gate @CR August 2013

District preparations include annually reviewing and updating the tropical weather annex of the emergency operations plan; maintaining flood control features and inspecting roofs of the schools and making sure that emergency resources are available and ready should a storm threaten the Texas Gulf Coast. In order to respond ahead of any storm, Katy ISD stays informed by working closely with the National Weather Service and by listening to regional partners at the City of Katy, Harris County and Fort Bend County.

THEATER/ARTS MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON! Foxfinder by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder,’ arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Museum of Dysfunction IV December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. Rome by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www. mildredsumbrella.com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS ) Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass.

We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping.

Broadway (with our special emphasis on ‘Sound of Music”) and Patriotic music. All proudly “Made in the USA!!”

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.

Cell: 832-876-3010

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.

KATY REBELS-D’ADDIECO TEAM The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco team took first place at the June 8-9, 2013 Tournament for Hope in Austin, TX. This is now an incredible 5 first place finishes so far this year. In this tournament, the Rebels had key players missing and more key players battling through significant injury and they still managed to win the tournament. They showed some admirable grit and character to rise up as a team and pull together for the wins. The team shooting efficiency was well above their normal average all weekend, including a team record in both 2 pt. and 3 pt. percentage in the first game. The improved shooting, along with the typical disciplined defense, a steadily improving low post offense and domination on the glass were the main differences in the games. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on your fifth championship!

the nationally acclaimed Junior Master Gardener program supported by 28 universities, including Texas A&M University, which serves as JMG headquarters. This year’s curriculum is Wildlife Gardener and includes lessons taught by Master Gardeners and other subject matter experts about birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, vermicomposting and much more. “Twenty to thirty years ago, nearly all kids were exposed to nature on a day to day basis. Times have changed and it gets harder and harder for youth to have the same experiences. This camp gives youth the opportunity to learn about and experience the best that nature brings and get their hands dirty along the way” said Boone Holladay, Fort Bend County Extension Agent - Horticulture, who advises the Master Gardener volunteers. Kids’ Kamp will be held at the Fort Bend County Extension office at 1402 Band Road in Rosenberg from 9 AM until 3 PM each day. A registration fee of $50 includes all materials, snacks and a Tshirt and is limited to the first 25 paid registrants. TIMELY TIPS FOR SUMMER GARDENERS Summer is upon us and your garden may be feeling the heat. Mulch can help your garden plants weather the summer heat and still thrive. REDUCE WATER USE Mulch provides several healthy benefits to Texas gardens in the summertime. One of the most well-known benefits of mulch is to reduce evaporation and water use. In the heat of summer conserving water can be particularly important. Mulch provides a softer layer covering the hard ground, which serves as to insulate the ground from the heat of the day and as a moisture holding area after watering or rain. Water passes more easily into the mulch than into the hard ground giving

the soil more time to absorb the water from the mulch layer rather than having the water runoff into the street. Mulch helps hold the moisture in the ground by reducing evaporation. More moisture in the ground reduces the temperature of the soil around plant roots. REGULATE SUB-SURFACE TEMPERATURES Another very important benefit to mulch in the heat of summer is regulation of ground temperature. A 3 to 4 inch blanket of mulch is excellent insulation, protecting the ground from direct sun and greatly reducing the temperature several inches below ground level. This is where your plants’ roots live, thrive and do the hard work of absorbing moisture and nutrients. They will be much healthier and more productive with the reduction in temperature that mulch provides. TYPES OF MULCH As for types of mulch, Cornelius Nursery recommend hardwood or cedar wood for most gardens. Some gardeners prefer pine mulch, but while it is somewhat less expensive, it also breaks down more quickly and will need to be reapplied frequently. Cedar is the most expensive of the three but does help reduce garden pests in some instances, due to its natural repellant properties. To apply mulch, simply place it in the garden from the bag or with a shovel and carefully spread it around your plants by hand or with a rake. Mulch will reduce your water use, reduce the time required to weed, as well as reduce soil loss due to wind and runoff. Plus it will help your plants to thrive through the summer heat!

HOUSTON HEAT PRECAUTIONS AND WATER CONSERVATION While the spring has been a bit cooler than normal and the beginning of June saw some wonderful rain, the projected outlook for rain during the rest of summer is not good. While last summer did not have many days over 100˚F, 2012 was still the hottest year on record for the cities of Houston and Galveston and Hobby Airport. (www.srh.noaa.gov/images/hgx/climate/Annual_Climate_Article_2012.pdf). Based on their current charts, Houston is predicted to be very hot this summer with below expected rainfall. While projections can be wrong, we need to be prepared if they are correct. Houston Department of Health and Human Services offers the information below on being safe in the heat. Remember that small children, older adults and those suffering long term illnesses are often the first to suffer from high heat situations. Know your neighbors and be sure to check on anyone who falls into the above categories. Be sure to check on outdoor pets as well. www.houstontx. gov/health/heatillness.html. TIPS TO AVOID HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS: • Increase water consumption. Drink lots of liquids even before getting thirsty, but avoid those with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar because these can actually result in the loss of body fluid. • Conduct outdoor work or exercise in the early morning or evening when it is cooler. Outdoor workers should drink plenty of water or electrolyte-replacement beverages and take frequent breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned facility. Those unaccustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment need to start slowly and gradually increase heat

exposure over several weeks. • Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing that permitsthe evaporation of perspiration. • Do not leave children, senior citizens or pets unattended in a vehicle. • A wide-brimmed hat helps prevent sunburn as well as heat-related illness. Sunscreen also protects from the sun’s harmful rays and reduces the risk of sunburn. • If the house is not air-conditioned, seek accommodations in air-conditioned facilities during the heat of the day: malls, movie theaters, libraries, multi-service centers, etc. • Take frequent cool baths or showers if your house is not air-conditioned. One of the best ways to help your gardens is to use mulch around your flower beds and trees. A great long-term way to help reduce the temperature in your home is to plant trees. Large trees provide much needed shade. If you look at older family farms you can always spot which building is the homestead - it is the one surrounded by deciduous trees. Deciduous trees provide shad from the sun in the summer but allow the sun to warm the areas below in the winter when the leaves fall off the trees.

VACATION PLANS As summer gets into full swing and vacation plans are made, be sure to let a trusted neighbor know when you will be away. Remember to stop the mail (can be done on-line at https://holdmail.usps. com/holdmail/ or at the post office, 3 day minimum). Either stop newspaper delivery (https://myaccount.houstonchronicle.com/Login.aspx and log into your account) or arrange for someone

37

to keep them from collecting in front of your house. There no longer is a credit for undelivered newspapers. Our experience is that the newspaper never stopped coming, even though we requested a stop, so we just have someone pick up the newspaper. There is a great video online at www. howcast.com/videos/369734-How-to-Secure-Your-Homewhile-Youre-on-Vacation with some simple tips on securing your home. One simple suggestion you might not think of is to lock your garage doors from the inside, then unplug the garage door opener. This prevents someone from using a decoder and entering your garage and home.

St. Jude helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say Novena 9 times a day for 9 days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you St. Jude – MJK
