PICK UP YOUR DOG’S WASTE

When walking your dog, please do not allow them to walk in people’s yards. In the event your dog does wander onto someone’s property and uses the bathroom please pick up all of the waste. A single gram (about the size of a dime) of dog feces contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria. Dog feces may harbor dangerous bacteria and viruses such as: whipworms, roundworms, tapeworms, parvo, giardiasis, salmonellosis and cryptosporidiosis. Pet waste is not fertilizer. It actually kills plants and grasses. Improperly disposed of or left unchecked, dog waste pollutes our environment and can even filter into our water supply. Uncollected dog waste that washes into streams and storm drains is the #3 contributor to water contamination. Pick up your dog’s waste. Not only will it help the environment, but it will ensure you and your dog a clean and safe area to enjoy together!

HELP KEEP OUR LIGHTS ON

Cinco Ranch Residents pay a maintenance fee where a large portion includes the electricity to light our streets. Each streetlight costs the Cinco Ranch Associations approximately $30 dollars a month. This fee is billed to us whether the light is working or not. If you see a light(s) burned out, please help us by getting the number on the pole. You may submit the work order to Centerpoint Energy or report it to the Associations Office. To report the outage yourself you will either fill out the form available at: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage or you can call the information into Centerpoint Energy at 713-207-2222. PET LEASH LAWS IN THE CINCO RANCH AREA FT. BEND COUNTY - LEASH LAW

Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program

VACCINATION

Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Fort Bend County Animal Control - 1210 Blume Road Rosenberg, TX 77471 - 281-342-1512 - AnimalServices@co.fort-bend.tx.us.

Do you have a transformer in your yard? If you do, please do not directly surround it with mulch or dirt. Transformers must have the sides exposed so they can cool properly. Otherwise they will over heat and burn out. Also, the sides of a transformer can rust through due to mulch holding moisture against them. Please do your part and clear the area around transformers in your yard.

CC Building by Design, LLC DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!

Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake.

PROTECT STORM DRAINS

Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of $5,000 for each offense.

HOT WEATHER TIPS FOR PETS

Dogs and cats are much more susceptible than humans to hot weather related conditions such as dehydration and heat stroke. They have sweat glands only on their paws and mostly pant to cool themselves. Pets with “pushed-in” faces, like pugs, are especially prone to heat stroke as they cannot cool themselves as efficiently by panting. HEAT STROKE CAN BE FATAL. Dogs and cats can also suffer from sunburn. Fortunately, most of these problems can be easily prevented. Unfortunately, many pet guardians - even those who obviously cherish their four-legged family members - are unaware of these simple preventive measures. I’ve

6

August 2013

Cinco Ranch II

heard of a couple of fairly recent incidents in our area where dogs collapsed and died of heat stroke after being taken out for runs by their well-intentioned guardians. Here are some important hot weather safety tips: • Exercise your pet during the cooler parts of the day and never after a meal. Always carry cold water for your pet and allow him to drink periodically - he might be feeling overheated, thirsty and fatigued even if you’re not. Allowing your pet to drink from a pool of standing water is not safe - it may be loaded with bacteria, virus particles and organisms like Giardia. Easily portable pet water dishes are widely available. Soaking your dog’s coat with cool (not cold) water before exercising may help, especially if she’s long-haired. • NEVER leave your pet alone in a vehicle. Even with a moderate outdoor temperature and open windows, the vehicle can quickly become a furnace. A pet can die within minutes. • Make sure your pet is well-conditioned for a particular activity. Be especially sensitive to overweight and old pets. Remember that our pets age much more rapidly than we do. • Never leave your pet standing on hot asphalt. It may burn his paws. • For pets kept in the backyard or in a cat or dog “run,” provide plenty of water and shade. Bring your pet indoors during the hottest part of the day (which is most of the day during our summers)! Never leave your pet on a leash for prolonged periods. • Don’t shave your dog’s hair down to the skin. This takes away sun protection and may cause sunburn. • Biking and rollerblading with dogs on-leash is too hard on them, particularly in hot weather. In fact, in some cities (including those in cooler climates), it is against the bylaws to cycle with a pet on-leash. We can go much further on wheels before we tire out compared to our pets on their feet. Dogs will often push themselves to the point of collapse (and even death) to keep up with us. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY and can occur quickly. Signs are excessive panting, hot skin and dark pink or reddish gums. If these are present, soak your pet in cool water and take her immediately to the nearest veterinarian. Remember, prevention is key. Amba Balu, MD

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf.

KATY ISD PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON

Katy ISD is preparing for tropical weather hazards and the 2013 hurricane season that officially began June 1st. The district reminds families to prepare, as well by making a plan, putting together a hurricane survival kit and staying informed. The Houston region has many helpful resources to guide students, parents and school personnel through these three steps. “In order for Katy ISD to be ready for storms, we need our community to be informed and prepared,” said John Bremer, Katy ISD emergency management coordinator. “Prepared families help by allowing us time to close schools and secure the buildings well ahead of any impending threats. If families are prepared, then we can make better decisions about school operations.” The Texas Department of State Health Services has a number of tools for families to use, including a brochure on Hurricane Preparedness, an emergency supply checklist and a video on surviving disasters. The Ready Houston regional preparedness page also has helpful information on how to prepare for disasters, including hurricanes at: www.readyhoustontx.gov. “Make a plan, put together a survival kit and stay informed are three steps Katy ISD uses to prepare for hurricane season; these are the same steps students, parents and school personnel can use to be ready,” added Bremer. District preparations include annually reviewing and updating the tropical weather annex of the emergency operations plan; maintaining flood control features and inspecting roofs of the schools and making sure that emergency resources are available and ready should a storm threaten the Texas Gulf Coast. In order to respond ahead of any storm, Katy ISD stays informed by working closely with the National Weather Service and by listening to regional partners at the City of Katy, Harris County and Fort Bend County.

WOMEN’S FLAT TRACK ROLLER DERBY

KATY REBELS-D’ADDIECO TEAM

The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco team took first place at the June 8-9, 2013 Tournament for Hope in Austin, TX. This is now an incredible 5 first place finishes so far this year. In this tournament, the Rebels had key players missing and more key players battling through significant injury and they still managed to win the tournament. They showed some admirable grit and character to rise up as a team and pull together for the wins. The team shooting efficiency was well above their normal average all weekend, including a team record in both 2 pt. and 3 pt. percentage in the first game. The improved shooting, along with the typical disciplined defense, a steadily improving low post offense and domination on the glass were the main differences in the games. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on your fifth championship!

MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder,’ arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre.

“Atlantic City Entertainer of the Year” nominee, Harry Maurer returns to HFAC Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) invites you to join them for five unforgettable performances filled with comedy, spectacle and wonder featuring “Atlantic City Entertainer of the Year Award” nominee Harry Maurer. DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-4974904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many

families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. EXCHANGE STUDENTS FROM AMERICAN COUNCILS

The U.S. Department of State sponsors exchange programs that bring high school students from over 50 countries from all over the world in the United State for an academic year to live with an American host family, attend high school and learn about American society. American Councils is always looking for interested and excited host families to host one of their students. SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives.

34

August 2013

In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children – not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.

Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

SPECIAL PALS SUMMER CARE FOR ANIMALS

Special Pals Shelter wants to remind you to keep your animals hydrated and cool this summer. Leave your pets indoors as much as possible, since there’s no guarantee on how much shade they’ll get being left in the yard. Never leave your pet in the car; it only takes a few minutes for your animal to be exposed to deadly heat stroke, even if the windows are cracked! If you take your dog out for walks or runs, be sure to bring a bowl and a container of water and only exert them in the hours when the temps are lowest. Checks may also be sent to: Special Pals 3830 Greenhouse Road Houston, TX 77084 Houston area for over 30 years. For more information, contact us by email (clinic@specialpalsshelter.org), phone (281-579-7387) or stop by our facility at 3830 Greenhouse Road (Houston, TX 77084).

DACHSHUND RESCUE OF HOUSTON - We are a small group of volunteers right here in Houston and the surrounding areas and we love dachshunds! Our primary mission is to rescue (from pounds and shelters) purebred (and a few mixed) dachshunds that end up alone, abandoned and/or abused and for many of them, it can be an 11th hour rescue. All of our rescued dachsies receive a complete health evaluation by our accredited veterinary clinics and are either spayed or neutered (if not already), given immunizations, dental care and are started on any necessary medical treatment(s). Our focus following rescue, is rehabilitation and relocation into a safe and loving foster home. These dachshunds are all in need of a second chance at life and simple basics like human affection, which they may have been without their entire little lives. And for that reason… We’re in desperate need of Foster Parents! As a foster parent, you’ll have the opportunity to help so many dogs. You’ll provide them a place to stay and be loved until they are healthy and strong enough to be adopted. Fostering is very rewarding, and the puppy kisses you’ll receive are priceless!

Back to School BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY

As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride.
 • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas.
 • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure

 • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults.
 • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance.

 • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. HOW TO CHOOSE A BACKPACK FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

When shopping for a backpack for your child, keep these guidelines in mind:

1. Inspect before you invest. Check carefully for: • Sloppy stitching or loose threads, which can indicate poor manufacturing • Raw, exposed fabric edges, which can fray and weaken the fabric and possibly get stuck in the zipper • Zippers without covering fabric flaps. In our rain test, zippers that were not protected by flaps of fabric allowed water to seep in. 2. One size does not fit all. Ideally, the bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back and not be more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack’s shoulder-strap anchor points should also rest 1 to 2 inches below the top of the shoulders. 3. Comfort, convenience and safety are important. Features to look for include wide, padded, contoured shoulder straps that distribute the pack’s load over a large area of the shoulder, an abdominal strap, which can help distribute the pack’s weight evenly on the back, waist and hips and reflectors or reflective fabrics on the pack to add visibility when kids travel to and from school at dusk or dawn.

50

August 2013

4. Prevent injury with a lighter load. To prevent discomfort and injury, load and wear the backpack correctly. The American Occupational Therapy Association recommends carrying no more than 15 percent of your body weight in a backpack. But the less you carry, the better for your back. Visit www.consumerreports.org for more information on chosing the right backpack for your child.

DEALING WITH BULLIES

Bullying is a big problem. It can make kids feel hurt, scared, sick, lonely, embarrassed and sad. Bullies might hit, kick, or push to hurt people, or use words to call names, threaten, tease, or scare them.

A bully might say mean things about someone, grab a kid’s stuff, make fun of someone, or leave a kid out of the group on purpose. Some bullies threaten people or try to make them do things they don’t want to do. BULLYING IS A BIG DEAL Bullying is a big problem that affects lots of kids. Three-quarters of all kids say they have been bullied or teased. Being bullied can make kids feel really bad. The stress of dealing with bullies can make kids feel sick. Bullying can make kids not want to play outside or go to school. It’s hard to keep your mind on schoolwork when you’re worried about how you’re going to deal with the bully near your locker. Bullying bothers everyone — and not just the kids who are getting picked on. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to more violence and more stress for everyone. WHY DO BULLIES ACT THAT WAY? Some bullies are looking for attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important. When they pick on someone else, it can make them feel big and powerful. Some bullies come from families where everyone is angry and shouting all the time. They may think that being angry, calling names, and pushing people around is a normal way to act. Some bullies are copying what they’ve seen someone else do. Some have been bullied themselves.

Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. They might pick on kids who get upset easily or who have trouble sticking up for themselves. Getting a big reaction out of someone can make bullies feel like they have the power they want. Sometimes bullies pick on someone who is smarter than they are or different from them in some way. Sometimes bullies just pick on a kid for no reason at all.

BULLYING: HOW TO HANDLE IT Don’t give the bully a chance. As much as you can, avoid the bully. You can’t go into hiding or skip class, of course. But if you can take a different route and avoid him or her, do so.

Stand tall and be brave. When you’re scared of another person, you’re probably not feeling your bravest. But sometimes just acting brave is enough to stop a bully. How does a brave person look and act? Stand tall and you’ll send the message: “Don’t mess with me.” It’s easier to feel brave when you feel good about yourself.

Sometimes bullies know that what they are doing or saying hurts other people. But other bullies may not really know how hurtful their actions can be. Most bullies don’t understand or care about the feelings of others.

Gemma told her mom that this one kid was picking on her for having red hair and freckles. She wanted to be like the other kids but she couldn’t change those things about herself. Finally Gemma made friends at her local swimming pool with a girl who wished she had red hair like Gemma’s. The two girls became great friends and she learned to ignore the mean girl’s taunts at school.

Feel good about you. Nobody’s perfect, but what can you do to look and feel your best? Maybe you’d like to be more fit. If so, maybe you’ll decide to get more exercise, watch less TV, and eat healthier snacks. Or maybe you feel you look best when you shower in the morning before school. If so, you could decide to get up a little earlier so you can be clean and refreshed for the school day. Get a buddy (and be a buddy). Two is better than one if you’re trying to avoid being bullied. Make a plan to walk with a friend or two on the way to school or recess or lunch or wherever you think you might meet the bully. Offer to do the same if a friend is having bully trouble. Get involved if you see bullying going on in your school — tell an adult, stick up for the kid being bullied, and tell the bully to stop. IF THE BULLY SAYS OR DOES SOMETHING TO YOU Ignore the bully. If you can, try your best to ignore the bully’s threats. Pretend you don’t hear them and walk away quickly to a place of safety. Bullies want a big reaction to their teasing and meanness. Acting as if you don’t notice and don’t care is like giving no reaction at all, and this just might stop a bully’s behavior. Stand up for yourself. Pretend to feel really brave and confident. Tell the bully “No! Stop it!” in a loud voice. Then walk away, or run if you have to. Kids also can stand up for each other by telling a bully to stop teasing or scaring someone else, and then walk away together. If a bully wants you to do something that you don’t want to do — say “no!” and walk away. If you do what a bully says to do, they will likely keep bullying you. Bullies tend to bully kids who don’t stick up for themselves. Don’t bully back. Don’t hit, kick, or push back to deal with someone bullying you or your friends. Fighting back just satisfies a bully and it’s dangerous, too, because someone could get hurt. You’re also likely to get in trouble. It’s best to stay with others, stay safe, and get help from an adult. Don’t show your feelings. Plan ahead. How can you stop yourself from getting angry or showing you’re upset? Try distracting yourself (counting backwards from 100, spelling the word ‘turtle’ backwards, etc.) to keep your mind occupied until you are out of the situation and somewhere safe where you can show your feelings. Tell an adult. If you are being bullied, it’s very important to tell an adult. Find someone you trust and go and tell them what is happening to you. Teachers, principals, parents, and lunchroom helpers at school can all help to stop bullying. Sometimes bullies stop as soon as a teacher finds out because they’re afraid that they will be punished by parents. This is not tattling on someone who has done something small — bullying is wrong and it helps if everyone who gets bullied or sees someone being bullied speaks up. What Happens to Bullies? In the end, most bullies wind up in trouble. If they keep acting mean and hurtful, sooner or later they may have only a few friends left — usually other kids who are just like them. The power they wanted slips away fast. Other kids move on and leave bullies behind. Luis lived in fear of Brian — every day he would give his lunch money to Brian but he still beat him up. He said that if Luis ever told anyone he would beat him up in front of all the other kids in his class. Luis even cried one day and another girl told everyone that he was a baby and had been crying. Luis was embarrassed and felt so bad about himself and about school. Finally, Brian got caught threatening Luis and they were both sent to the school counselor. Brian got in a lot of trouble at home. Over time, Brian learned how to make friends and ask his parents for lunch money. Luis never wanted to be friends with Brian but he did learn to act strong and more confident around him. Some kids who bully blame others. But every kid has a choice about how to act. Some kids who bully realize that they don’t get the respect they want by threatening others. They may have thought that bullying would make them

popular, but they soon find out that other kids just think of them as troublemaking losers. The good news is that kids who are bullies can learn to change their behavior. Teachers, counselors, and parents can help. So can watching kids who treat others fairly and with respect. Bullies can change if they learn to use their power in positive ways. In the end, whether bullies decide to change their ways is up to them. Some bullies turn into great kids. Some bullies never learn. But no one needs to put up with a bully’s behavior. If you or someone you know is bothered by a bully, talk to someone you trust. Everyone has the right to feel safe, and being bullied makes people feel unsafe. Tell someone about it and keep telling until something is done. Source: kidshealth.org Reviewed by: D’Arcy Lyness, PhD Date reviewed: August 2012

SIX STEPS TO SMARTER STUDYING

How did you learn how to ride your bike? Someone probably gave you a few lessons and then you practiced a lot. You can learn how to study in much the same way. No one is born knowing how to study. You need to learn a few study skills and then practice them. Why work on your study skills? It will make it easier for you to learn and do well in class, especially as you move up to middle school and high school.

Here are six steps to smarter studying: Pay attention in class. Take good notes. Plan ahead for tests and projects. Break it down. (If you have a bunch of stuff to learn, break it into smaller chunks.) Ask for help if you get stuck. Get a good night’s sleep!

1. Pay Attention: Good Studying Starts in Class Here’s a riddle for you: Did you know that before you even begin studying, you’ve already started? Huh? Here’s what we mean. When you pay attention in class and take good notes, you are starting the process of learning and studying. Do you have trouble paying attention in class? Are you sitting next to a loud person? Is it hard to see the board? Make sure you’re sitting in a good seat that lets you pay attention. Tell your teacher or parents about any problems that are preventing you from paying attention and taking good notes. 2. Good Notes = Easier Studying Not sure how to take notes? Start by writing down facts that your teacher mentions or writes on the board during class. Try your best to use good handwriting so you can read your notes later. It’s also a good idea to keep your notes, quizzes, and papers organized by subject.

3. Plan Ahead and You’ll Be Glad You Did Waiting until Thursday night to study for Friday’s test will make for a homework night that’s no fun! It also makes it hard to do your best. We’re all guilty of putting things off sometimes. One of the best ways to make sure that doesn’t happen is to plan ahead.

Ask for a cool calendar (something you like and can keep by your desk or study area) and write down your test and assignment due dates. Ask your mom or dad how to make a schedule of what to do when.

in 4. Break It Up! When there’s a lot to study, it can help to break things into chunks. Let’s say you have a test on 20 spelling words. Instead of thinking about all of the words at once, try breaking them down into five-word chunks and working on one or two different chunks each night. Don’t worry if you can’t remember something on the first try. That’s where practice comes in. The more days you spend reviewing something, the more likely it is to stick in your brain. There are also tricks called mnemonic (say: new-mah-nik) devices that can help you remember stuff. When you’re trying to memorize a list of things, make up a phrase that uses the first letter of each. For example, are you trying to learn the eight planets and their order from the sun? Think: My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nachos to remember Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Your teacher can give you ideas, too.

6. Sleep Tight! So the test is tomorrow and you’ve followed your study plan — but suddenly you can’t remember anything, not even 2+2! Don’t panic. Your brain needs time to digest all the information you’ve given it. Try to get a good night’s sleep and you’ll be surprised by what comes back to you in the morning. Source: kidshealth.org Reviewed by: Steven Dowshen, MD Date reviewed: March 2010 Originally reviewed by: Chris Cortellessa, M.Ed, NCC

Another way to break it up is to study regularly instead of just the night before. You can always review your notes and read over the chapters you’re working on. Or, if you’re studying math or science, do some practice problems. How much studying should you do each night? Your teacher can help you figure it out. Most brains can only pay attention for about 45 minutes. So if you’ve been working for a while and find it hard to pay attention, try taking a break for some water or a walk around the house. Just fight the temptation to turn on the TV or stop working! 5. Lose the Confusion — Ask for Help You can’t study effectively if you don’t understand the material. Be sure to ask your teacher for help if you’re confused about something. You can check yourself by reading through your notes. Does it all make sense? If not, ask your teacher to go over it with you. If you’re at home when the confusion occurs, your mom or dad might be able to help.
