GRAYSON LAKES 4 TH OF JULY PARADE & FAMILY SPLASH DAY

GRAYSON LAKES COMMUNITY-WIDE GARAGE SALE

What a blast our residents had at the 4th of July Parade & Family Splash Day this year! The parade was a huge success! Resident families came out sporting their patriotically decorated bikes, scooters, wagons, cars, trucks and motorcycles. We even had parade floats this year! Our local Boy Scout Troop 230 lead the way and the Willow Fork Fire Truck brought up the rear!

September 21, 2013, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM Register Now!

The Parade was immediately followed by a Flag Raising Ceremony up at the Recreation Center, brought to us by Boy Scout Troop 230. Prizes were given for the best parade decorations, but everyone was a winner in our book! Thank you to all of the resident spectators who came out to support the kiddies! At the Family Splash Day, the kids enjoyed playing on an Inflatable Slip N’ Slide, having a wet and wild sponge ball battle and making lots of bubbles, big and small, while the adults had a watermelon eating contest and relaxed by the pool! Everyone was served a delicious hotdog lunch. What a great day everyone had! A very special thank you goes out to our new management company, Sterling, ASI, for sponsoring this wonderful event! We would also like to thank CJ’s Yardworks and Bent Code for donating the awesome gift card prizes! We truly appreciate Boy Scout Troop 230, Willow Fork Fire Department and Deputy Singh for their contributions to the Parade and Flag Raising Ceremony! Thank you to our Seven Lake’s High School Volunteers for all of their help and especially thank you to our Resident Volunteers! This group of women and men work so hard to make each and every one of our resident events special for you! We absolutely could not do it without them!

Clean out your closets, playrooms, garages and attics. It is time for a community-wide garage sale! The Grayson Lakes Community-Wide Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, September 21st from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. There will not be a central location for the event, each sale will be conducted on the individual homeowners property. All Participants must register in advance by completing the attached form and mailing it to Sterling Association Services, Inc., along with a check, for $10, payable to Grayson Lakes Home Owners Association. METAL TREE STAKES Are the supporting wires that initially held your tree in place slack or non-existent? Has your tree started to grow over the support wire and in danger of being killed? If either of these is true, it’s time to remove the metal tree stakes from your yard. This can be a chore. Your Board has heard that Grayson Lakes resident Lanny Hitchcock has equipment to pull these stakes and will do the work for free as long as he can keep the stakes. He can be contacted at LKHitch@yahoo.com.

(b) interpretation and enforcement of the Governing Documents and (c) establishing and upholding the Architectural Guidelines and Rules and Regulations and (d) administering the architectural review process for Grayson Lakes. (See Section 6.1 of the Amended and Restated Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions for Grayson Lakes.) These functions are intended to ensure that the quality of Grayson Lakes is maintained at the level intended and promoted, by the Developer. These are your guarantee that the quality of Grayson Lakes will not erode over time. In order to accomplish these goals, a volunteer Board of Directors is elected each year to carry out these functions on your behalf. It is this Board of Directors that is the primary object of the list of Rights and Responsibilities below. This list is rather lengthy. In order to reproduce this material from CAI, we are required to present it without modification. “Community leaders have the right to: 1. Expect owners and non-owner residents to meet their financial obligations to the community. 2. Expect residents to know and comply with the rules and regulations of the community and to stay informed by reading materials provided by the association. 3. Respectful and honest treatment from residents. 4. Conduct meetings in a positive and constructive atmosphere. 5. Receive support and constructive input from owners and non-owner residents. 6. Personal privacy at home and during leisure time in the community. 7. Take advantage of educational opportunities (e.g., publications, training workshops) that are directly related to their responsibilities and as approved by the association. Community leaders have the responsibility to: 1. Fulfill their fiduciary duties to the community and exercise discretion in a manner they reasonably believe to be in the best interests of the community. 2. Exercise sound business judgment and follow established management practices. 3. Balance the needs and obligations of the community as a whole with those of individual homeowners and residents. 4. Understand the association’s governing documents and become educated with respect to applicable state and local laws and to manage the community association accordingly. 5. Establish committees or use other methods to obtain input from owners and non-owner residents. 6. Conduct open, fair and well-publicized elections. 7. Welcome and educate new members of the community-owners and non-owner residents alike. 8. Encourage input from residents on issues affecting them personally and the community as a whole. 9. Encourage events that foster neighborliness and a sense of community. 10. Conduct business in a transparent manner when feasible and appropriate. 11. Allow homeowners access to appropriate community records when requested. 12. Collect all monies due from owners and non-owner residents.

Grayson Lakes August 2013

13. Devise appropriate and reasonable arrangements, when needed and as feasible, to facilitate the ability of individual homeowners to meet their financial obligations to the community. 14. Provide a process residents can use to appeal decisions affecting their non-routine financial responsibilities or property rights-where permitted by law and the association’s governing documents. 15. Initiate foreclosure proceedings only as a measure of last resort. 16. Make covenants, conditions and restrictions as understandable as possible, adding clarifying “lay” language or supplementary materials when drafting or revising the documents. 17. Provide complete and timely disclosure of personal and financial conflicts of interest related to the actions of community leaders, e.g., officers, the Board and committees. (Community associations may want to develop a code of ethics.)” From “Rights and Responsibilities for Better Communities,” Community Association Institute.

GARDEN TIPS FOR

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf.

KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG IMPORTANT DATE

August 26th - First Day of School! KATY ISD PARTNERS IN EDUCATION A world of thanks from Partners in Education! 18,560 community and parent volunteers walked into KATY ISD classrooms and made a difference! You rock and we say, “Thank You!”

KATY ISD PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON Katy ISD is preparing for tropical weather hazards and the 2013 hurricane season that officially began June 1st. The district reminds families to prepare, as well by making a plan, putting together a hurricane survival kit and staying informed. The Houston region has many helpful resources to guide students, parents and school personnel through these three steps. “In order for Katy ISD to be ready for storms, we need our community to be informed and prepared,” said John Bremer, Katy ISD emergency management coordinator. “Prepared families help by allowing us time to close schools and secure the buildings well ahead of any impending threats. If families are prepared, then we can make better decisions about school operations.”

The Texas Department of State Health Services has a number of tools for families to use, including a brochure on Hurricane Preparedness, an emergency supply checklist and a video on surviving disasters. The Ready Houston regional preparedness page also has helpful information on how to prepare for disasters, including hurricanes at: www.readyhoustontx.gov. “Make a plan, put together a survival kit and stay informed are three steps Katy ISD uses to prepare for hurricane season; these are the same steps students, parents and school personnel can use to be ready,” added Bremer. District preparations include annually reviewing and updating the tropical weather annex of the emergency operations plan; maintaining flood control features and inspecting roofs of the schools and making sure that emergency resources are available and ready should a storm threaten the Texas Gulf Coast. In order to respond ahead of any storm, Katy ISD stays informed by working closely with the National Weather Service and by listening to regional partners at the City of Katy, Harris County and Fort Bend County.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY
AUGUST 9 - 11, 2013 The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of the this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9th - 11th, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride.

JAMES E. TAYLOR CLASS OF 1988 ANNOUNCES 25TH CLASS REUNION The James E. Taylor Class of 1988 would like to announce its 25th Class Reunion. The reunion will be held on September 28th at Willow Fork Country Club in Katy. The event will begin at 6:00 PM. There will be a meet and greet and heavy hors d’oeuvres. The event features the House of Blues New Year’s Eve and 80’s band, “Thunderpants.” The event will conclude at 11:30 PM.

• Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas.
 • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop.

Registration and other details regarding the reunion can be found at www.classcreator.com/Katy-Texas-Taylor-1988.

• Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO.

For more information, please contact Holly Graham Murphy at 832-428-3035, Jacqueline Guttman Dolezal at 281-2229133 or Wendi Zedler Lacki at 832-492-7466.

• Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming

• Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized.
 • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. HOW TO CHOOSE A BACKPACK FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

• Carpentry • Sheet Rock (All kinds of textures, baseboards & trims)

When shopping for a backpack for your child, keep these guidelines in mind:

2. One size does not fit all. Ideally, the bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back and not be more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack’s shoulder-strap anchor points should also rest 1 to 2 inches below the top of the shoulders.

4. Prevent injury with a lighter load. To prevent discomfort and injury, load and wear the backpack correctly. The American Occupational Therapy Association recommends carrying no more than 15 percent of your body weight in a backpack. But the less you carry, the better for your back. Visit www.consumerreports.org for more information on chosing the right backpack for your child.

3. Comfort, convenience and safety are important. Features to look for include wide, padded, contoured shoulder straps that distribute the pack’s load over a large area of the shoulder, an abdominal strap, which can help distribute the pack’s weight evenly on the back, waist and hips and reflectors or reflective fabrics on the pack to add visibility when kids travel to and from school at dusk or dawn.

THEATER/ARTS A “MAGICAL” FUNDRAISER FOR HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER “Atlantic City Entertainer of the Year” nominee, Harry Maurer returns to HFAC Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) invites you to join them for five unforgettable performances filled with comedy, spectacle and wonder featuring “Atlantic City Entertainer of the Year Award” nominee Harry Maurer. The performances, August 2-4, 2013, will benefit the HFAC Fischer Studio, the new performance venue for the HFAC Actors Academy. We hope families take advantage of the opportunity to see one of America’s most talented magicians. Performances will be held on the HFAC Garza Mainstage located at 10760 Grant Road in Northwest Houston. Show times Friday, August 2nd at 7:30 PM, Saturday, August 3rd at 4:00 and 7:30 PM and Sunday, August 4th at 4:00 and 7:30 PM. We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.

August 2013

Grayson Lakes

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.

Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

EXCHANGE STUDENTS - FROM AMERICAN COUNCILS The U.S. Department of State sponsors exchange programs that bring high school students from over 50 countries from all over the world in the United State for an academic year to live with an American host family, attend high school and learn about American society. American Councils is always looking for interested and excited host families to host one of their students.
