YARD WORK Friendly Reminder during the summer, with the extreme high temperatures our lawns still need to be properly maintained. This includes weekly mowing depending on how fast the grass grows and edging on a routine basis. Lawns need to be watered during the summer months to keep there healthy appearance. The management company will be monitoring for homes needing to have the lawn mowed and rotten wood or painting done. Please make sure to complete and submit a Architectural Control Committee Approval form for any improvements. Our goal is to keep up the beautiful appearance of our community. POOL OPEN AND SAFETY RULES STRICTLY ENFORCED Even with the pool opening back in May, there are still several residents wanting to use the pool without having a valid 2013 issued pool tag. All residents must be in possession of a pool tag in order to have the privilege of using the pool. Residents in good standing, with a pool tag, are welcome to utilize the pool and amenities. There are rules to follow at the swimming pool and they are posted. Those who do not follow the rules will be asked to leave. Failure to obey the lifeguard’s instructions regardless of your age will result in suspension of pool privileges. SCHOOL’S OUT FOR THE SUMMER Once again, children are on summer vacation. Please, all drivers use extreme caution while driving throughout the subdivision. Expect that children will be playing, riding bicycles in and around the streets and crossing the streets, especially around the community center going to the pool. COMMUNITY CENTER/CLUBHOUSE, PAVILION They are available for usage by our resident’s and their guests. A $50 deposit for each one is required and refundable upon passing the exit inspection; contact Anita Ratliff at 832-814-7634, she is the only Board of Director authorized to take the deposit.

HARRIS COUNTY CURFEW
Most parents are unaware that Harris County has a curfew. Children under the age of 17 must be in at midnight (12 AM). Parent’s need to make sure that their children are at home the entire night. If children are caught wandering around at late hours after midnight, the Harris County Sheriff’s will give them a citation. This is a class C misdemeanor; both the child and the parent must appear in front of court and pay a fine. Usually it will take all day to take care of this and the fine may exceed $150.
OUR COMMUNITY SECURITY SUPPLEMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT
Westlake Place HOA-Board of Directors have hired off-duty deputies employed with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, for our community. Having security does not mean you should not secure your own property or not be responsible for your own security. Take time to make sure your vehicles are locked, parked in the garage if you can. That is the safest place for your vehicle. Get to know your neighbors. Call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office if you see any suspicious vehicles/ persons in the neighborhood. Notify the post office and paper delivery when you plan to be out of town. If you are going away from home for an extended period of time, contact the management company with an updated phone number for your file in case of an emergency. You can also fill out a vacation form with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
PATROL SERVICE REPORT
The Association receives many reports of speeding drivers and drivers running stop signs in the community. Monitoring of stop signs has resulted in some citations issued and other citations for different traffic violations. For the safety of the community and residents walking, children playing, please follow the speed limit and make a full stop at each stop sign to ensure everyone’s safety. The deputies has been notified of the complaints/concerns voiced by the residents and will continue to monitor this activity with zero tolerance. Please remember if you see a crime in progress call 9-1-1 and report any suspicious persons or unusual activity. On-going activity can be reported to Gail Mayfield our Security Supplement Liaison at 281467-0548.

So remember to abide by all traffic laws while driving through the subdivision. The Board’s number one priority is trying to keep the entire subdivision safer and informed.
REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES AND CRIMES
When you see suspicious activity and would like to file a report etc, call the non-emergency number. When a crime is in progress and or a human life is at risk call the 9-1-1. If at anytime someone observes a suspicious person or vehicle they should not hesitate reporting it to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. There are three ways to do this.

Again, let’s be the eyes and ears for the law enforcement. Residents should not hesitate to call the number above to report ANY suspicious activity. Do not waste time calling any Board member in an attempt to contact our security patrol personnel. If they are on duty at the time of your call our patrolling deputy will be monitoring the radio dispatches and will respond in addition to the on-duty deputy. Too often, we hear about situations in which the Sheriff’s Office should have been called but the resident was reluctant to do this. When calling the above number, don’t be put off by the voice mail menu. Stick with it until you are connected to a person who is able to help. There have been several residents reporting crimes to the Board, which we encourage residents to continue this practice.

This is the only acceptable way to post such signs. If posting a sign on a resident’s property, please ask for prior permission as a courtesy. If a resident places a garage sale sign in median of the front or back entrance and if this results in any type of damage to the sprinkler system, you will be charged for any needed repairs. We are requesting that all residents limit your garage sales to no more than once a quarter - meaning four times a year only.

Our association is charged for every streetlight each month, irrespective of whether or not the light is functioning. So please help us get value for your hard earned money!
GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a treat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbored or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow them to become a stray.” Restraints are defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances:

Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

KATY ISD PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON
Katy ISD is preparing for tropical weather hazards and the 2013 hurricane season that officially began June 1st. The district reminds families to prepare, as well by making a plan, putting together a hurricane survival kit and staying informed. The Houston region has many helpful resources to guide students, parents and school personnel through these three steps. “In order for Katy ISD to be ready for storms, we need our community to be informed and prepared,” said John Bremer, Katy ISD emergency management coordinator. “Prepared families help by allowing us time to close schools and secure the buildings well ahead of any impending threats. If families are prepared, then we can make better decisions about school operations.”

www.WeBuyGoldCenter.com “Make a plan, put together a survival kit and stay informed are three steps Katy ISD uses to prepare for hurricane season; these are the same steps students, parents and school personnel can use to be ready,” added Bremer. District preparations include annually reviewing and updating the tropical weather annex of the emergency operations plan; maintaining flood control features and inspecting roofs of the schools and making sure that emergency resources are available and ready should a storm threaten the Texas Gulf Coast. In order to respond ahead of any storm, Katy ISD stays informed by working closely with the National Weather Service and by listening to regional partners at the City of Katy, Harris County and Fort Bend County.
3. Comfort, convenience and safety are important. Features to look for include wide, padded, contoured shoulder straps that distribute the pack’s load over a large area of the shoulder, an abdominal strap, which can help distribute the pack’s weight evenly on the back, waist and hips and reflectors or reflective fabrics on the pack to add visibility when kids travel to and from school at dusk or dawn. 4. Prevent injury with a lighter load. To prevent discomfort and injury, load and wear the backpack correctly. The American Occupational Therapy Association recommends carrying no more than 15 percent of your body weight in a backpack. But the less you carry, the better for your back. Visit www.consumerreports.org for more information on chosing the right backpack for your child.
HOW TO CHOOSE A BACKPACK FOR BACK TO SCHOOL
When shopping for a backpack for your child, keep these guidelines in mind: 1. Inspect before you invest. Check carefully for: • Sloppy stitching or loose threads, which can indicate poor manufacturing • Raw, exposed fabric edges, which can fray and weaken the fabric and possibly get stuck in the zipper • Zippers without covering fabric flaps. In our rain test, zippers that were not protected by flaps of fabric allowed water to seep in. 2. One size does not fit all. Ideally, the bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back and not be more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack’s shoulder-strap anchor points should also rest 1 to 2 inches below the top of the shoulders.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 9 - 11, 2013
The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of the this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9th - 11th, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained at www.window. state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d/, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder,’ arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella.com - info@ mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

All proudly “Made in the USA!!” Our group welcomes singers, dancers, instrumentalists and “Ham’s” and creates an hour of musical entertainment for the audience. (We love audience participation!)

PLANTING THE RIGHT TREE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.
