Back to School! BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY

As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride.  • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in welllit areas.   • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop.   • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes

them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO.  • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.”  • Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them.  • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults.  • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance.  • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized.  • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. HOW TO CHOOSE A BACKPACK FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

When shopping for a backpack for your child, keep these guidelines in mind: 1. Inspect before you invest. Check carefully for: • Sloppy stitching or loose threads, which can indicate poor manufacturing • Raw, exposed fabric edges, which can fray and weaken the fabric and possibly get stuck in the zipper • Zippers without covering fabric flaps. In our rain test, zippers that were not protected by flaps of fabric allowed water to seep in. 2. One size does not fit all. Ideally, the bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back and not be more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack’s shoulder-strap anchor points should also rest 1 to 2 inches below the top of the shoulders. 3. Comfort, convenience and safety are important. Features to look for include wide, padded, contoured shoulder straps that distribute the pack’s load over a large area of the shoulder, an abdominal strap, which can help distribute the pack’s weight evenly on the back, waist and hips and reflectors or reflective fabrics on the pack to add visibility when kids travel to and from school at dusk or dawn. 4. Prevent injury with a lighter load. To prevent discomfort and injury, load and wear the backpack correctly. The American Occupational Therapy Association recommends carrying no more than 15 percent of your body weight in a backpack. But the less you carry, the better for your back. How did you learn how to ride your bike? Someone probably gave you a few lessons and then you practiced a lot. You can learn how to study in much the same way. No one is born knowing how to study. You need to learn a few study skills and then practice them. Why work on your study skills? It will make it easier for you to learn and do well in class, especially as you move up to middle school and high school.

Here are six steps to smarter studying: Pay attention in class. Take good notes. Plan ahead for tests and projects. Break it down. (If you have a bunch of stuff to learn, break it into smaller chunks.) Ask for help if you get stuck. Get a good night’s sleep! 1. Pay Attention: Good Studying Starts in Class Here’s a riddle for you: Did you know that before you even begin studying, you’ve already started? Huh? Here’s what we mean. When you pay attention in class and take good notes, you are starting the process of learning and studying. Do you have trouble paying attention in class? Are you sitting next to a loud person? Is it hard to see the board? Make sure you’re sitting in a good seat that lets you pay attention. Tell your teacher or parents about any problems that are preventing you from paying attention and taking good notes. 2. Good Notes = Easier Studying Not sure how to take notes? Start by writing down facts that your teacher mentions or writes on the board during class. Try your best to use good handwriting so you can read your notes later. It’s also a good idea to keep your notes, quizzes, and papers organized by subject. 3. Plan Ahead and You’ll Be Glad You Did Waiting until Thursday night to study for Friday’s test will make for a homework night that’s no fun! It also makes it hard to do your best. We’re all guilty of putting things off sometimes. One of the best ways to make sure that doesn’t happen is to plan ahead. Ask for a cool calendar (something you like and can keep by your desk or study area) and write down your test and assignment due dates. You can then plan how much to do after school each day, and how much time to spend on each topic. Are lessons or extracurricular activities making it hard to find time to study? Ask your mom or dad how to make a schedule of what to do when.

Don’t worry if you can’t remember something on the first try. That’s where practice comes in. The more days you spend reviewing something, the more likely it is to stick in your brain. There are also tricks called mnemonic (say: new-mah-nik) devices that can help you remember stuff. When you’re trying to memorize a list of things, make up a phrase that uses the first letter of each. For example, are you trying to learn the eight planets and their order from the sun? Think: My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nachos to remember Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Your teacher can give you ideas, too. Another way to break it up is to study regularly instead of just the night before. You can always review your notes and read over the chapters you’re working on. Or, if you’re studying math or science, do some practice problems. How much studying should you do each night? Your teacher can help you figure it out. Most brains can only pay attention for about 45 minutes. So if you’ve been working for a while and find it hard to pay attention, try taking a break for some water or a walk around the house. Just fight the temptation to turn on the TV or stop working! 5. Lose the Confusion — Ask for Help You can’t study effectively if you don’t understand the material. Be sure to ask your teacher for help if you’re confused about something. You can check yourself by reading through your notes. Does it all make sense? If not, ask your teacher to go over it with you. If you’re at home when the confusion occurs, your mom or dad might be able to help. 6. Sleep Tight! So the test is tomorrow and you’ve followed your study plan — but suddenly you can’t remember anything, not even 2+2! Don’t panic. Your brain needs time to digest all the information you’ve given it. Try to get a good night’s sleep and you’ll be surprised by what comes back to you in the morning. Bullying is a big problem. It can make kids feel hurt, scared, sick, lonely, embarrassed and sad. Bullies might hit, kick, or push to hurt people, or use words to call names, threaten, tease, or scare them. A bully might say mean things about someone, grab a kid’s stuff, make fun of someone, or leave a kid out of the group on purpose. 4. Break It Up! When there’s a lot to study, it can help to break things into chunks. Let’s say you have a test on 20 spelling words. Instead of thinking about all of the words at once, try breaking them down into five-word chunks and working on one or two different chunks each night.

Why Do Bullies Act That Way? Some bullies are looking for attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important. When they pick on someone else, it can make them feel big and powerful. Some bullies come from families where everyone is angry and shouting all the time. They may think that being angry, calling names, and pushing people around is a normal way to act. Some bullies are copying what they’ve seen someone else do. Some have been bullied themselves. Sometimes bullies know that what they are doing or saying hurts other people. But other bullies may not really know how hurtful their actions can be. Most bullies don’t understand or care about the feelings of others. Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. They might pick on kids who get upset easily or who have trouble sticking up for themselves. Getting a big reaction out of someone can make bullies feel like they have the power they want. Sometimes bullies pick on someone who is smarter than they are or different from them in some way. Sometimes bullies just pick on a kid for no reason at all. Gemma told her mom that this one kid was picking on her for having red hair and freckles. She wanted to be like the other kids but she couldn’t change those things about herself. Finally Gemma made friends at her local swimming pool with a girl who wished she had red hair like Gemma’s. The two girls became great friends and she learned to ignore the mean girl’s taunts at school. Bullying: How to Handle It Don’t give the bully a chance. As much as you can, avoid the bully. You can’t go into hiding or skip class, of course. But if you can take a different route and avoid him or her, do so. Stand tall and be brave. When you’re scared of another person, you’re probably not feeling your bravest. But sometimes just acting brave is enough to stop a bully. How does a brave person look and act? Stand tall and you’ll send the message: “Don’t mess with me.” It’s easier to feel brave when you feel good about yourself. See the next tip! Feel good about you. Nobody’s perfect, but what can you do to look and feel your best? Maybe you’d like to be more fit. If so, maybe you’ll decide to get more exercise, watch less TV, and eat healthier snacks. Or maybe you feel you look best when you shower in the morning before school. If so, you could decide to get up a little earlier so you can be clean and refreshed for the school day. Get a buddy (and be a buddy). Two is better than one if you’re trying to avoid being bullied. Make a plan to walk with a friend or two on the way to school or recess or lunch or wherever you think you might meet the bully. Offer to do the same if a friend is having bully trouble. Get involved if you see bullying going on in your school — tell an adult, stick up for the kid being bullied, and tell the bully to stop.

If The Bully Says or Does Something to You Ignore the bully. If you can, try your best to ignore the bully’s threats. Pretend you don’t hear them and walk away quickly to a place of safety. Bullies want a big reaction to their teasing and meanness. Acting as if you don’t notice and don’t care is like giving no reaction at all, and this just might stop a bully’s behavior. Stand up for yourself. Pretend to feel really brave and confident. Tell the bully “No! Stop it!” in a loud voice. Then walk away, or run if you have to. Kids also can stand up for each other by telling a bully to stop teasing or scaring someone else, and then walk away together. If a bully wants you to do something that you don’t want to do — say “no!” and walk away. If you do what a bully says to do, they will likely keep bullying you. Bullies tend to bully kids who don’t stick up for themselves. Don’t bully back. Don’t hit, kick, or push back to deal with someone bullying you or your friends. Fighting back just satisfies a bully and it’s dangerous, too, because someone could get hurt. You’re also likely to get in trouble. It’s best to stay with others, stay safe, and get help from an adult. Don’t show your feelings. Plan ahead. How can you stop yourself from getting angry or showing you’re upset? Try distracting yourself (counting backwards from 100, spelling the word ‘turtle’ backwards, etc.) to keep your mind occupied until you are out of the situation and somewhere safe where you can show your feelings.

Tell an adult. If you are being bullied, it’s very important to tell an adult. Find someone you trust and go and tell them what is happening to you. Teachers, principals, parents, and lunchroom helpers at school can all help to stop bullying. Sometimes bullies stop as soon as a teacher finds out because they’re afraid that they will be punished by parents. This is not tattling on someone who has done something small — bullying is wrong and it helps if everyone who gets bullied or sees someone being bullied speaks up.

What Happens to Bullies? In the end, most bullies wind up in trouble. If they keep acting mean and hurtful, sooner or later they may have only a few friends left — usually other kids who are just like them. The power they wanted slips away fast. Other kids move on and leave bullies behind. Luis lived in fear of Brian — every day he would give his lunch money to Brian but he still beat him up. He said that if Luis ever told anyone he would beat him up in front of all the other kids in his class. Luis even cried one day and another girl told everyone that he was a baby and had been crying. Luis was embarrassed and felt so bad about himself and about school. Finally, Brian got caught threatening Luis and they were both sent to the school counselor. Brian got in a lot of trouble at home. Over time, Brian learned how to make friends and ask his parents for lunch money. Luis never wanted to be friends with Brian but he did learn to act strong and more confident around him. Some kids who bully blame others. But every kid has a choice about how to act. Some kids who bully realize that they don’t get the respect they want by threatening others. They may have thought that bullying would make them popular, but they soon find out that other kids just think of them as troublemaking losers. The good news is that kids who are bullies can learn to change their behavior. Teachers, counselors, and parents can help. So can watching kids who treat others fairly and with respect. Bullies can change if they learn to use their power in positive ways. In the end, whether bullies decide to change their ways is up to them. Some bullies turn into great kids. Some bullies never learn. But no one needs to put up with a bully’s behavior. If you or someone you know is bothered by a bully, talk to someone you trust. 100 CLUB FUNDS ENDOWMENT FOR TERRY TAYLOR

Six months ago the Taylor family’s world was turned upside down with the sudden loss of Terry Taylor. Leaving behind a wife, two children and a nearly one-year-old grandson, Terry was killed while helping a police officer in the parking lot of the Bellaire-area Maaco Collision Repair he owned for 21 years... on Christmas Eve. Terry’s selfless act will be honored by a $50,000 endowment that will give a $5,000 scholarship in perpetuity to a Cy-Fair ISD student who wishes to pursue a criminal justice degree. Board members of the 100 Club, a non-profit organization that gives financial aid to families of those in law enforcement and fire fighters who are killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty, voted unanimously to make this gift to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. “Terry was a citizen who went above and beyond the call of duty to help an officer in need,” said Rick Hartley, Executive Director of the 100 Club. “It is a small way we can say thank you to Terry’s family.”

The Taylor family was first offered financial assistance by the 100 Club but Kevin, Terry’s son who owns another Maaco Collision Repair in the Cy-Fair area, didn’t feel right about accepting the offer. “We wanted to give back to the community instead.” A 27-year military officer veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Terry Taylor was honored in February by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation at the annual Salute to Heroes event. Impressed by positive impact the organization is making in the lives of community students, Kevin had already started to visit with the CyFair Educational Foundation about making a contribution for someone in need when he was approached by the 100 Club with their generous gift. “My dad believed strongly in the importance of a solid education. My sister is an engineer in St. Louis and my father and I both earned master degrees,” said Kevin. “We feel like it’s so important to help someone attend school who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.” The Taylor family moved to the Cy-Fair community in the 1970s from Kentucky. “My mom still lives in the same house I grew up in,” said Kevin. Terry was a quiet man who worked hard but also enjoyed camping and fishing. “He was an old-school military guy who always helped someone when they needed it,” said Kevin. “He never drank alcohol or smoked a day in his life and loved walking every night with his dogs,” said Kevin. On Christmas Eve morning, with his wife Judy by his side and plans to close up early to celebrate the holiday, Terry saw an officer having trouble apprehending a criminal after a car chase ended in the parking lot of his

shop. Both Bellaire Police Department Sergeant Jimmie Norman and Terry Taylor were allegedly shot and killed by the criminal who is awaiting trial for the murders. Kevin’s son turned one on the day of Terry’s funeral. “My son will never get to know his grandfather. My father didn’t get a chance to know his only grandson,” said Kevin. “We are trying to make sense of what happened and why. We know that bad things happen to good people and that we are living God’s plan so there is a reason, a purpose... I feel like this scholarship is one positive thing that will come out of this,” he said.

BUS BUDDIES, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2013 - 2014 SCHOOL YEAR

Come be a part of the “Bus Buddies Volunteer Program” in our Cypress-Fairbanks ISD schools. What is Bus Buddies? Bus Buddies is a partnership between the Cy-Fair community and CypressFairbanks Independent School District to provide assistance to elementary students helping them get off the bus at the correct location. The program requires one “Bus Buddy” per elementary bus the first three days of school. The approximate time commitment is from 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM on August 26th, 27th and 28th. You may choose to volunteer one, two or all three days. Your job is to simply assist the bus driver with making sure the children get off the bus at their correct stops. What is Required? (1) Attend one of the training sessions, if not previously trained. (2) Arrive and sign in at your assigned school where campus staff will assist you. (3) Enjoy helping the kids and driver! When and Where is the 1 Hour Training? Training is held at our Berry Center located at 8877 Barker Cypress Rd., Cypress, TX. August 19th - 9:30 AM -10:30 AM August 20th - 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM (evening session) August 21st - 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM The Partners in Education (PIE) department is looking for the same strong Bus Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the CyFair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. We do encourage all Bus Buddy volunteers to wear a shirt indicating the business or organization they are representing so that our employees, parents and the community will be aware of your organization’s support of CFISD. Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District had the pleasure of honoring its district and state volunteer and business partner award winners during the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 5, 2013. The award winners were nominated by various schools in the district at which the volunteers and/or business partners generously donated their time and resources. These treasured volunteers and community partners were first selected as our district award winners and then competed with others in their categories from school districts around the state. The state level award winners were recognized by the Texas Association of Partners in Education during their annual conference held in Austin on January 29th.

For Cy-Woods High School Key Club members, however, it means having copious amounts of time to volunteer and serve the community. Because wildlife flourishes in summer’s plentiful sunlight, neighborhood parks need a lot of maintenance. To make their neighborhoods look their best, students can call their Home Owner’s Association and offer to trim or mow these parks or even build a bench or picnic table to make them more people-friendly.

For those who would rather stay indoors, nursing homes are always looking for extra hands. Seniors who need assistance doing everyday tasks, often don’t have many visitors and spend much of their time without company. Spending time with them can teach teens compassion, as well as brighten the day of the community’s elderly. Food banks also need helpers. Organizing food drives and distributing the items donated is a great way for Key Club members to volunteer during the summer because it supports the lives of those in need. Over the course of the year everyone accumulates old paraphernalia that isn’t used, but is still in usable condition. An efficient way to get rid of this “junk” is to host a yard sale and donate the proceeds to charities, reducing trash and giving back to the community simultaneously. The items that were not sold can also be donated to organizations like Cypress Assistance Ministries or Goodwill.

Everyone loves animals and a fun way to turn this love into community service is by volunteering in animal care at the Cypress Science Resource Center. During the school year, volunteers visit elementary schools throughout the district to teach kids about various animals and animal behavior by exhibiting live critters. These furry teachers need to be cared for year-round and summer is an especially fun time to help because the more time you spend with the animals, the better you get to know them. Animal shelters also look for animal-friendly volunteers, but unfortunately often have an age limit for applicants. For those who are eligible, caring for rescue animals is a fulfilling way to spend the summer. Although most teens spend their summer relaxing, not all members of the community have this luxury. Troops overseas are in constant need of personal care items and means of amusement. Donating extra (unopened) containers of shampoo, toothpaste, magazines, books, etc. to organizations like Cypress Cares supports our forces abroad. Cypress has lots of volunteering opportunities during the summer and for any Key Club member looking to catch up, keep up or get ahead on their hours, they don’t have to look far to find service opportunities that fit them.

By: Gaurav Lalsinghani Cypress Woods Key Club Representative Coordinator The course of nature is in harmony during the summer months as the activities of Cypress Woods Key Club continue. Along with recruiting new and eager members, we have occupied ourselves with various donations, events and socials. In order to encourage literacy and celebrate the wealth of reading, the Cypress Woods Key Club, along with several other Division 3N Key Clubs, will be collecting books, school supplies and back-to-school necessities at summer Presidential Council Meetings and other various events to mitigate the worry of financially-struggling families. I feel this project is significantly important for two major reasons. One being that it is unarguably aimed at celebrating and bolstering children. This is such a great cause in general, but it is also in accordance to the motto of Kiwanis International: Serving the Children of the World. This allows us to support the goals of our parent organization and thus our club itself. Furthermore, the donation drive encourages literacy and thus will teach the importance of reading to the children affected. Even more, this project will also teach them the importance of education in general. Such a valuable outcome facilitates the success and progress of the leaders of tomorrow. Our simple donations are stepping stones for children who aim for a better future, wisdom wells for the students whose thirst for knowledge is infinite and escapes for individuals dreaming of prosperous future. In the course of these summer months, many books will be donated and will begin their journey to transform the lives of many children, eager to learn and prosper; And hopefully, these children will grow to transform the lives of even more people. A cycle as elegant as this could transform the world undoubtedly for the better. The practicality and applicability of such an event are simple, allowing clubs across T-O to partner up with neighboring organizations and small businesses to reach out to the entire community. The efforts of Key Clubbers are the first steps towards such a future and I encourage you to fervently imitate these steps in this positive direction for the sake of children everywhere.

HOW KEY CLUB CHANGED MY LIFE

By: Nikki Carter Cypress Woods Key Club Editor For my freshman and sophomore years, I was a part of Key Club. However, I use the word “part” very loosely. My friends were joining. It looked good on college applications. Sometimes we get fed at the events. It sounded appealing enough to me, so I joined. Why not, right? I went to the meetings and completed my hours on time, figuring that was all there was to it. At the end of my sophomore year, I applied to be a Junior Representative; I needed another leadership position to list for my National Honor Society application. I got the position with no idea that it would turn out to be one of the best developments of not only my high school career, but my life. It was after this promotion that I finally threw myself completely into the wonderful world of Key Club and figured out that it is so much more than a bullet point on a college application. Volunteering is a strange concept to many. One gives of his own time and resources willingly to help someone else and expects nothing in return. In a society so focused on personal material growth, the motivation behind this is notion is confusing. However, one detail that is overlooked by those with a financial mindset is that the volunteer actually does get something in return. It sounds cliché, but the sense of worth that one gains after helping another is something that can’t be bought or exchanged and it makes one forget about and not mind not getting paid for his time. This is a fact that I have come to know throughout my time as a Key Clubber; the long, late hours of working concessions at sporting events and the impatient, frustrated parents of Jr. High cup stackers could never dampen my spirits enough to make me want to stop giving my time, because it’s not about my own comfort at all.

this past April, I was blown away by how friendly and accepting everybody was. The spirit of volunteering carries over easily into Key Clubbers’ social interactions; we put others before ourselves. Making a first-timer like me feel welcome and comfortable at a giant convention like DCON was more important to seasoned attendees than sitting and talking with old friends. That’s a hard thing for most high schoolers to do and it demonstrates just how incredible the bond is between people who live their lives for others. This organization is so much more than an extracurricular activity to those who truly pour their hearts and souls into it. Key Club has become a beacon of light in my own life by offering me countless opportunities to do the same in the lives of other people, which is, in itself, priceless.

Cheerleading this Fall. We will be having Upward Soccer for children 4 yrs. By September 1, 2013 through 6th Grade. Our Flag Football and Cheerleading will be for children in K this year through 6th Grade. Register before school starts. Our first evaluation is before school starts. Each child needs to attend an evaluation, not for the whole two hours, but for about 20 min. This year we have an early special price of $70 for those that register before August 18th. We have our first evaluation on Saturday, August 17th from 10:00 AM 12:00 PM in the back fields behind our parking lot. Our next evaluations will be Tuesday and Thursday, September 4th and 6th from 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM. On Saturday, September 8th between the hours of 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Cost is $75. Our practices will begin the week of September 23rd. Our first games will be October 5th and go through November 16th. MEN’S OUTWARD FLAG FOOTBALL: Come join men 18 yrs and older for our men’s Outward Flag Football league coming this fall. Practice/Games will be on Saturday afternoons around 2:00 PM. The league will have a tournament at the conclusion of the season. Evaluations for all players will be Tuesday and Thursday, September 10th and 12th from 6:00-7:00 PM and Saturday, September 14th from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. These will take place on the fields behind the church. Cost for the league will be $35 per player covering cost of officials and jersey. First games will be October 12th and season concludes on November 9th with tournament. ‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.
