Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Re s t r a i n t i s d e f i n e d a s “ t h e control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises of the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower beds might keep cats away. HAPPY BACK TO SCHOOL! GET MOTIVATED! It’s that TIME! Back to school! Kiddos are NOT going to be excited, but most parents will be! How can you get your kiddo ready for another school year? Here are some tips: • Start getting into the school schedule mode in early August. Begin readjusting bed time, homework time and other regular school schedules. • Begin school shopping early. Have your child enjoy the experience and be positive! • Read as a family so kiddos will get into the reading mode. Kids lose their ability to learn most during the summer months. Refresh their skills! • Start winding down the family gatherings, get-togethers and activities and focus on the family. • Lead by example.
BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips:

If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them. • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults. • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance. • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 9 - 11, 2013 The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of the this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9th - 11th, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained at www.window.state.tx.us/ taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d/, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.

Thanks to the efforts of Boy Scout, Jacob Sealey, his Eagle Scout service project has provided new wood duck boxes for the wildlife of Lakes on Eldridge. Wood duck boxes provide safe shelter and a place to raise young for the various small waterfowl that reside in the area. These boxes were installed in and around the vegetation on some of the smaller ponds. An Eagle Scout service project is the opportunity for a Boy Scout to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of any religious institution, school or community. This is the culmination of the Eagle Scout candidate’s leadership training and it requires a significant effort on his part. The Scout must develop a project plan, coordinate fundraising to provide the necessary materials, schedule the work organize the personnel needed and give leadership to others in order to direct the project to its completion. Jacob, 15, is a Boy Scout with Troop 1283 based out of St. Elizabeth Ann-Seton Church in Houston. He has worked his way through the ranks from a young Cub Scout to the final rank in Boy Scouts, going above and beyond the requirements and, is now awaiting his Eagle board-of-review to become an Eagle Scout (the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve). We would like to thank Jacob, all of his volunteers and the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for their efforts and a job well done. The benefits of providing your service to the needs of our local wildlife and to this community are greatly appreciated.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH
Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 - Oct 15, 2013. THEATER/ARTS MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
Foxfinder by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Museum of Dysfunction IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. Rome by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella.com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.
‘BEGINNING WITH BEETHOVEN’ TAKES HOLD OF HOUSTON
‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Recommended by Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some Tom Tynan, of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurSportsRadio 610 am the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed rected including by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with

more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), August 17th, Saturday at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February.

KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG August 26th First Day of School! KATY ISD PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON Katy ISD is preparing for tropical weather hazards and the 2013 hurricane season that officially began June 1st. The district reminds families to prepare, as well by making a plan, putting together a hurricane survival kit and staying informed. The Houston region has many helpful resources to guide students, parents and school personnel through these three steps. “In order for Katy ISD to be ready for storms, we need our community to be informed and prepared,” said John Bremer, Katy ISD emergency management coordinator. “Prepared families help by allowing us time to close schools and secure the buildings well ahead of any impending threats. If families are prepared, then we can make better decisions about school operations.” The Texas Department of State Health Services has a number of tools for families to use, including a brochure on Hurricane Preparedness, an emergency supply checklist and a video on surviving disasters. The Ready Houston regional preparedness page also has helpful information on how to prepare

4526 Highway 6 Houston, TX 77084 for disasters, including hurricanes at: www.readyhoustontx.gov. “Make a plan, put together a survival kit and stay informed are three steps Katy ISD uses to prepare for hurricane season; these are the same steps students, parents and school personnel can use to be ready,” added Bremer. District preparations include annually reviewing and updating the tropical weather annex of the emergency operations plan; maintaining flood control features and inspecting roofs of the schools and making sure that emergency resources are available and ready should a storm threaten the Texas Gulf Coast. In order to respond ahead of any storm, Katy ISD stays informed by working closely with the National Weather Service and by listening to regional partners at the City of Katy, Harris County and Fort Bend County.
