The winners for July are 6350 Pago, 13330 Hampton Falls, 13331 Misty Mill and 13346 Clayton Hill. Pictures are included in this issue of the Crier. 6350 Pago

Hurricane season began June 1st and runs through November 30th. Are you prepared for a weather emergency? In the event of an emergency, listen to local emergency officials: KTRH-AM 740 is the designated Emergency Alert Station for the Houston area. There are six basics you should stock for your home: water, food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies. There are also some special items to help pass the time. Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation in an easy to carry container. Possible containers include a large, covered trash container, a camping backpack or a duffle bag.

You can use this source to report lost and found animals. This has been a great help in returning lost and found animals to their owners. If you don’t have access to Facebook, you can call 281-468-9414. Please note, Harris County requires that all pets be on a leash or confined within your yard.

The permit application can be downloaded from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office website at www.hcso.hctx.net and click on forms. The application should be completed and mailed with the appropriate fees to the address shown on the application. A new permit will cost $35 and annual renewals are $10. DEED RESTRICTIONS Deed restrictions are in place to maintain continuity within the neighborhood. Without these standards, a home could be left in disrepair or abandoned and could become a plight to our neighborhood. At entrances to the neighborhood, there are signs declaring deed restrictions are strictly enforced and when you purchased the home you were given a copy of the deed restrictions. Please remember, this is a legal document in place to protect the value of your home. Crest Management handles most of the business transactions for Concord Bridge under the direction of your Board of Directors. If you don’t understand any correspondence from Crest Management, please call for clarification. The homeowners association pays for all correspondence related to deed restrictions; therefore, duplicate letters cost you and me additional fees. Do not ignore correspondence from Crest Management!
VACATION WATCH Vacations occur year round and the Precinct 5 Constables offer a very valuable service. If you complete a Vacation Watch form they will drive by and check your home while you are away. This form is available on the Precinct 5 Constable’s website, www.co.harris.tx.us/pct5 on the Concord Bridge website, www.concordbridgeonline.com and in this publication. You can also ask for a copy from one of the officers. Information on how to mail or fax it is on the form. It’s also a good idea to let a trusted neighbor know that you will be gone so they can report unusual activity at your home during your absence.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST • Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage.

• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

LOST YOUR PET?
Veterinary Public Health DIVISION (Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website. www.countypets.com.
VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”
The publisher assumes no liability with regard to its advertisers for misprints or failure to place advertising in this publication except for the actual cost of such advertising.
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governingthe dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”
Although every effort is taken to avoid mistakes and/or misprints in this publication the publisher assumes no responsibility for any errors of information or typographical mistakes, except as limited to the cost of advertising as stated above or in the case of misinformation, a printed retraction/correction.
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 9 - 11, 2013 The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of the this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9th - 11th, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained at www.window.state.tx.us/ taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d/, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.

August 26th HAPPY BACK TO SCHOOL! GET MOTIVATED! It’s that TIME! Back to school! Kiddos are NOT going to be excited, but most parents will be! How can you get your kiddo ready for another school year? Here are some tips: • Start getting into the school schedule mode in early August. Begin readjusting bed time, homework time and other regular school schedules. • Begin school shopping early. Have your child enjoy the experience and be positive! • Read as a family so kiddos will get into the reading mode. Kids lose their ability to learn most during the summer months. Refresh their skills! • Start winding down the family gatherings, get-togethers and activities and focus on the family. • Lead by example.
BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips:

• Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride. • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas.

• It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop.

• Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO.
• Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults.

• Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance. • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized. • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. GIRL SCOUTS GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS - The community is bigger now! Due to the administrative changes in San Jacinto Council, we have moved away from our service unit structure. The Copper Creek Meadows community has been created by merging the former Bear Creek, Copper Corners and Blue Bonnet Meadows service units. A team drawn from members of each of the three service units has been at work for several months during this transition process to create the structure for our new community. Membership is drawn from fourteen elementary schools and the corresponding middle and high schools. The elementary schools served are: Lieder, Metcalf, Wilson, Tipps and Texas Christian School; Birkes, Fiest and Lowery; Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. The plan is that more people and more resources mean more activities and more fun for all of us! You can read more about these changes in the Golden Link or on the Council website, www.gssjc.org. An open planning meeting was held on July 14th. Rally Days (when we recruit new members and leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled after schools are back in session. Look for more information soon!
Registration and other details regarding the reunion can be found at www.classcreator.com/Katy-Texas-Taylor-1988.
Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome.
For more information, please contact Holly Graham Murphy at 832-428-3035, Jacqueline Guttman Dolezal at 281-222-9133 or Wendi Zedler Lacki at 832-492-7466.
We also need adult (over 18) leaders for our troops. We can’t form new troops without new leaders! You need a background check and a little training to get started,

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Thanks to the efforts of Boy Scout, Jacob Sealey, his Eagle Scout service project has provided new wood duck boxes for the wildlife of Lakes on Eldridge. Wood duck boxes provide safe shelter and a place to raise young for the various small waterfowl that reside in the area. These boxes were installed in and around the vegetation on some of the smaller ponds. An Eagle Scout service project is the opportunity for a Boy Scout to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of any religious institution, school or community. This is the culmination of the Eagle Scout candidate’s leadership training and it requires a significant effort on his part. The Scout must develop a project plan, coordinate fundraising to provide the necessary materials, schedule the work organize the personnel needed and give leadership to others in order to direct the project to its completion. Jacob, 15, is a Boy Scout with Troop 1283 based out of St. Elizabeth Ann-Seton Church in Houston. He has worked his way through the ranks from a young Cub Scout to the final rank in Boy Scouts, going above and beyond the requirements and, is now awaiting his Eagle board-of-review to become an Eagle Scout (the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve). We would like to thank Jacob, all of his volunteers and the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for their efforts and a job well done. The benefits of providing your service to the needs of our local wildlife and to this community are greatly appreciated.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

‘BEGINNING WITH BEETHOVEN’ TAKES HOLD OF HOUSTON
‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February. We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping.

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.
Concord Bridge August 2013
The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.

CY-FALLS HIGH SCHOOL
Wednesday - 8 months, 20 lbs. Very sweet/outgoing. Good with dogs, kids, cats unknown. Med-high activity level. You may have heard of the area of town called “The Corridor.” Unwanted dogs are left there to fend for themselves. Well, somebody let me out there and drove away when my back was turned. Boy, was I scared! I had never been on my own and was not sure what to do. Thankfully, some kind people came along and offered me food, water and then invited me into the warm car. Whew! Major relief! I am cute, fun, with some puppy months left in me and with no hard feelings. I love to run, play and would really enjoy some kids of my own to throw a ball or take me out for a stroll in the neighborhood.

100 CLUB FUNDS ENDOWMENT FOR TERRY TAYLOR
Six months ago the Taylor family’s world was turned upside down with the sudden loss of Terry Taylor. Leaving behind a wife, two children and a nearly one-year-old grandson, Terry was killed while helping a police officer in the parking lot of the Bellaire-area Maaco Collision Repair he owned for 21 years... on Christmas Eve. Terry’s selfless act will be honored by a $50,000 endowment that will give a $5,000 scholarship in perpetuity to a Cy-Fair ISD student who wishes to pursue a criminal justice degree. Board members of the 100 Club, a non-profit organization that gives financial aid to families of those in law enforcement and fire fighters who are killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty, voted unanimously to make this gift to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. “Terry was a citizen who went above and beyond the call of duty to help an officer in need,” said Rick Hartley, Executive Director of the 100 Club. “It is a small way we can say thank you to Terry’s family.” The Taylor family was first offered financial assistance by the 100 Club but Kevin, Terry’s son who owns another Maaco Collision Repair in the Cy-Fair area, didn’t feel right about accepting the offer. “We wanted to give back to the community instead.” A 27-year military officer veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Terry Taylor was honored in February by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation at the annual Salute to Heroes event. Impressed by positive impact the organization is making in the lives of community students, Kevin had already started to visit with the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation about making a contribution for someone in need when he was approached by the 100 Club with their generous gift. “My dad believed strongly in the importance of a solid education. My sister is an engineer in St. Louis and my father and I both earned master degrees,” said Kevin. “We feel like it’s so important to help someone attend school who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.” The Taylor family moved to the Cy-Fair community in the 1970s from Kentucky. “My mom still lives in the same house I grew up in,” said Kevin. Terry was a quiet man who worked hard but also enjoyed camping and fishing. “He was an old-school military guy who always helped someone when they needed it,” said Kevin. “He never drank alcohol or smoked a day in his life and loved walking every night with his dogs,” said Kevin. On Christmas Eve morning, with his wife Judy by his side and plans to close up early to celebrate the holiday, Terry saw an officer having trouble apprehending a criminal after a car chase ended in the parking lot of his shop. laire Police Department Sergeant Jimmie Norman and Terry Taylor were allegedly shot and killed by the criminal who is awaiting trial for the murders. Kevin’s son turned one on the day of Terry’s funeral. “My son will never get to know his grandfather. My father didn’t get a chance to know his only grandson,” said Kevin. “We are trying to make sense of what happened and why. We know that bad things happen to good people and that we are living God’s plan so there is a reason, a purpose... I feel like this scholarship is one positive thing that will come out of this,” he said.
BUS BUDDIES, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2013 - 2014 SCHOOL YEAR
Come be a part of the “Bus Buddies Volunteer Program” in our Cypress-Fairbanks ISD schools. What is Bus Buddies? Bus Buddies is a partnership between the Cy-Fair community and Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District to provide assistance to elementary students helping them get off the bus at the correct location. The program requires one “Bus Buddy” per elementary bus the first three days of school. The approximate time commitment is from 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM on August 26th, 27th and 28th. You may choose to volunteer one, two or all three days. Your job is to simply assist the bus driver with making sure the children get off the bus at their correct stops. What is Required? (1) Attend one of the training sessions, if not previously trained. (2) Arrive and sign in at your assigned school where campus staff will assist you. (3) Enjoy helping the kids and driver!

When and Where is the 1 Hour Training? Training is held at our Berry Center located at 8877 Barker Cypress Rd., Cypress, TX. August 19th - 9:30 AM -10:30 AM August 20th - 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM (evening session) August 21st - 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM The Partners in Education (PIE) department is looking for the same strong Bus Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the Cy-Fair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. We do encourage all Bus Buddy volunteers to wear a shirt indicating the business or organization they are representing so that our employees, parents and the community will be aware of your organization’s support of CFISD. Volunteers wear many hats! We are askingYOU to wear the very important “Bus Buddy Hat” and support our number one priority goal - the safety and security of our students! Please, register for a training session and choose your school by visiting www.cfisd.net and selecting “Bus Buddies.” For additional information about the program, please contact the CFISD Partners in Education Department at 281-894-3949.

CY-FAIR ISD CELEBRATES VOLUNTEERS, COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS PARTNERS
The importance of recognizing volunteer contributions and the support of our business and community partners is essential to a strong volunteer and partners program. The administration, students and staff of CFISD enjoyed hosting and entertaining over a thousand of the tens of thousands of volunteers and supporters that have given so much to help us achieve our goals this year. With the commitment and generosity of several community businesses, tickets to this appreciation event were free. PBK Architects continues to serve as the underwriter for the VIPS Appreciation Luncheon. Additionally, the event was sponsored by: Allsafe Storage, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation, Cy-Hope, GameTime by Total Recreation Products, H-E-B, Kroger, Lone Star College Cy-Fair, Spring Creek Barbeque, Towne Lake and Rock Creek. As a district, we are so fortunate to have thousands of volunteers who actively give their time to our kids and many business and community partners who adopt and support our schools. As Superintendent, Dr. Mark Henry, says, “each volunteer plays a very key role in the lives our students and staff and it has not gone unnoticed. In these past years, with a struggling economy and the district dealing with huge budget cuts, you have kept us on top by being generous with your time and sharing your many talents to make our district the great success that it is.”
