TWO FAMILIES RECEIVE KEYS TO NEW HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME Thrivent Financial and area churches support affordable home construction Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County (Habitat NWHC) celebrates the construction of two more Habitat NWHC homes at a dedication ceremony on July 20, 2013 at 8:30 AM at Hamill Crossing, a completely designed and built Habitat NWHC neighborhood. The new homeowners, Katherine Garrett and Martha Turcios will thank all those who worked so hard to help them reach this goal and there will be an open house of the newly completed homes directly following. Each Habitat for Humanity homeowner puts in what we call ‘Sweat Equity’ by working on the construction site to build their home alongside local volunteers. Ms. Garrett and Ms. Turcios were no exception and both put in well over the minimum of 350 Sweat Equity hours required by the program. They will both be closing on their homes the week following the dedication ceremony. Ms. Garrett’s home is unique because it was sponsored and built by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and area Lutheran churches. Sponsorship is the process by which a church,
CY-FAIR ISD
company or organization gives a financial donation that Habitat then uses to purchase the materials to build the house. This generosity helps increase Habitat’s ability to build more homes in its ongoing effort to eliminate substandard housing here in Northwest Harris County. Ms. Turcios is unique because upon closing on her home, she will be the oldest homeowner that Habitat NWHC has ever had. At 74 years of age Ms. Turcios has never owned her own home or even had her own bedroom. Ms. Turcios’ home was also sponsored and built by area churches. Ms. Turcios and Ms. Garrett worked hard and formed a warm relationship with the volunteers that helped build their homes and the end result is two beautiful homes that their families can enjoy for many years to come. Through donations of money, materials and volunteer labor, Habitat NWHC was able to build the homes and sell them at an affordable price. Ms. Garrett and Ms. Turcios will purchase their homes with a no-profit loan and their monthly mortgage payments will be used to build more Habitat houses. “It has been exciting to get to know these two neighbors during the construction of their homes and the completion of the Habitat program. I was talking to Katherine [Garrett] just the other day about how amazing it is that all these people that didn’t even know her before came out and worked so hard so that she and her family could have a decent place to live. It truly is an amazing and awe inspiring process.” Karly Grilliot, Habitat NWHC Development Manager

CHURCH NEWS COPPERFIELD CHURCH HOSTS NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR...DON PIPER Copperfield Church is pleased to announce bestselling author and speaker, Don Piper, as its special guest on Thursday, August 22nd, at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7:00 PM and admission to the event is FREE!! On the way home from a church conference in 1989, Don Piper’s Ford Escort was struck head-on by an 18-wheeler, He was killed instantly - pronounced dead by four sets of paramedics. But God worked a miracle and sent Don back to a broken body. To date, 34 surgical procedures have taken place. He walks only as a result of miraculous and in some cases medically unexplainable circumstances. During the time he was dead, Piper was granted the extreme privilege of glimpsing Heaven itself. Ninety minutes after dying, Don Piper came back to life where he faced a long and grueling recovery. Don travels across the country and around the world sharing his amazing story of hope and healing. His message is simple... We can have a better life now and an eternal life someday through faith in Jesus Christ! Don has appeared and shared his miraculous story in numerous nationalmedia outlets, including Fox News, CBN, “The Today Show” on NBC and Newsweek. Copperfield Church is located at 8350 Hwy. 6 North, Houston, TX 77095, 281-856-2273. At the event, representatives from Mission Centers of Houston will also share a report on the life-changing ministry being conducted in the underserved communities in inner-city Houston, Attendees will be given an opportunity to partner with this ministry.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH
Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 9 - 11, 2013 The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of the this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9th - 11th, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained at www. window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/ taxholiday/d/, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride. • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas. • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure

their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop. • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO. • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.”

Online or On Campus. LSC-CyFair offers affordable and flexible options: Associate degrees, workforce certificates and more!
• Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them. • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults. • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance. • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized. • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. Visit www.missingkids.com for even more back to school safety tips.

What is Bus Buddies? Bus Buddies is a partnership between the Cy-Fair community and Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District to provide assistance to elementary students helping them get off the bus at the correct location. The program requires one “Bus Buddy” per elementary bus the first three days of school. The approximate time commitment is from 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM on August 26th, 27th and 28th. You may choose to volunteer one, two or all three days. Your job is to simply assist the bus driver with making sure the children get off the bus at their correct stops. What is Required? (1) Attend one of the training sessions, if not previously trained. (2) Arrive and sign in at your assigned school where campus staff will assist you. (3) Enjoy helping the kids and driver! When and Where is the 1 Hour Training? Training is held at our Berry Center located at 8877 Barker Cypress Rd., Cypress, TX. August 19th - 9:30 AM -10:30 AM August 20th - 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM (evening session) August 21st - 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM The Partners in Education (PIE) department is looking for the same strong Bus Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the Cy-Fair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. We do encourage all Bus Buddy volunteers to wear a shirt indicating the business or organization they are representing so that our employees, parents and the community will be aware of your organization’s support of CFISD.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
