NOTES FROM THE BOARD
Hot? Come cool off at the Community Pool. Operational Hours: 12 Noon - 8 PM Tuesday - Sunday. The pool is closed Mondays, with exception to Holidays falling on Monday. Did you miss a Monthly Homeowner’s Meeting? Go to www. coppervillage.org to access Community ByLaws, Regulations and Meeting Minutes. Homeowner’s Meetings are held the 2nd Monday of the month at the Community Room located at the Swimming Pool. Here are a few of the projects the Board has been working on; • Removed Bottle Brush shrubs from the esplanade along West Rd at both East and West Copper Village Drive. Due to their height, they posed a safety hazard for motorist turning on/off of West Road. • Additional playground mulch has been installed in the Kid’s Play area within the park. • Installed a ceiling fan in the Community Room at the Swimming Pool. • Installed a Community Bulletin Board at the Swimming Pool. • Several new signs for the Pool area have been ordered and are expected to be installed in the coming weeks.
• A Bid to replace landscape timbers and mulch around the swing sets within the park has been accepted. Work should be completed in the coming weeks. • Bids to repair/replace faulty Irrigation equipment has been requested. We hope to have these issues resolved in the coming weeks. A variety of other projects are on our list and we will update you each month with our progress. Our local Municipal Utility District - MUD 172, is seeking candidates for an open Water District Board of Directors position. If you are interested in learning more regarding the position, please contact Jack Brooks at jackbrooks@comcast.net. If it looks like dog poo, smells like dog poo, it must be dog poo and it means our dog owners are still not picking up after their canine friends. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE pick up after your pet. MANAGEMENT NEWS: AMI, the community management company the we contract with for a variety of services has recently changed names to First Service Residential as part of an expanding partnership. After thoughtful consideration,

all 18 affiliated companies, many of which have long, established businesses in their communities like Association Management, Inc., have chosen to unite under the common FirstService Residential brand. Therefore, effective June 27, 2013, we are changing the name of our company to FirstService Residential. We are very excited about this milestone and the benefits it affords our clients. FirstService Residential has more than 100 offices providing residential management support to 6,000+ associations serving more than 1.5 million residents throughout North America. The company brings value to our managed communities by pairing the strength of robust corporate resources with the local leadership and market expertise of our associates – each of whom takes great pride in making a difference every day, to enhance the quality of living you and your fellow residents enjoy. For more information about FirstService Residential, please visit www.fsresidential.com. We believe that operating as one brand will enable us to optimize the benefits of scale, invest in future technology and share best practices across all of our offices. Please be assured that this rebranding is a change in name only. There will be no changes to our leadership team, your community management and support teams or the dayto-day business of your association. All of our contracts remain in effect and no other significant changes are planned. It’s solely a new name, not a new company. At no cost to your association, we will reach out to the homeowners during the coming weeks via a variety of communication methods, including email blasts, bulletin board notices, minutes and/or letters, to inform them about this initiative. Please call or email either of us or any member of our management team if you have questions or would like to discuss our rebranding initiative. As FirstService Residential, we look forward to providing even more tools, resources and services to you and your community.

10 FATIGUE FIGHTERS
When you’re feeling run-down and exhausted, try one of these methods for an energy - or attitude - boost. You know you haven’t run a marathon, climbed a mountain or even done much more than slog through a giant stack of paperwork - so why do you feel exhausted at the end of every day? That’s the tricky thing about stress, it can make you feel mentally and physically exhausted. If you’re so pooped you can’t socialize, enjoy hobbies or participate in activities that make you happy, it’s time to reassess. Find the fatigue fighter that leaves you feeling relaxed, refreshed and invigorated. 1. Exercise. It may seem counterintuitive - you’re so tired you can barely drag yourself home at the end of the day, so why would running a few miles help? The fact is exercise is one of the best ways to combat fatigue. More movement, not less, boosts energy levels. And you can exercise without leaving the comfort of your own home. Invest in some 8 or 10-pound weights and do some work on your arms while you’re watching TV or talking on the phone or buy an aerobic workout video and do 20 minutes in the morning for a before work cardio-boost. 2. Sleep. It sounds simple, but how often are you getting a good night’s sleep? If you actually keep a log of your sleep habits, you may find that your late-night puttering is robbing you of precious hours of shut-eye. Set a bedtime for yourself and stick to it. 3. Healthy diet. Stick to a healthy diet. While sugary snacks and caffeine-laden soft drinks may give you a short-term boost, they will quickly dump you into a low-energy slump. So what should you eat instead? Try dried apricots along with one ounce of almonds for a low-fat energy boost - this combo snack gives you up to 50% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A and 20% of your daily iron allowance. Raisins and yogurt or a fresh peach are some other nutrition-packed snacks that can help you boost your energy levels. 4. Cooling eye mask. Okay, you may feel a little silly, but who cares how you look? These eye masks typically contain a cold-retaining gel. Keep a few in the fridge and pop them on at the end of the day

when your eyes are burning from computer glare or throbbing with tension. Look a little funny, feel fantastic. 5. Pounding beat. Put on some music that gets you going. Remember when you could dance until dawn and watch the sun rise? Those days may be long gone, but your old AC/DC album may give you just enough energy to clean the kitchen. Or try an energizing yoga workout to rejuvenate your body and mind. 6. Astringent. Whether they contain herbal extracts, essential oils or pore-tightening alcohol, astringents are slightly tart face washes that are meant to be invigorating and refreshing. Choose your favorite and give it a try. At the very least, you’ll smell nice and have squeakyclean skin. 7. Just say no - to too many commitments, that is. Are you feeling exhausted because you’re trying to do too much? It may be time to say no every once in a while. And if the negative is super-hard for you to say, then practice with a qualified yes. As in, “Yes I can serve on the PTA committee, but I can’t do it this month. How about next month?” 8. Soak your fatigue away. Take a hot bath - the warm water loosens tight muscles and cuts stress, leaving you with more energy. A hot soak can erase the day’s tensions and leave you ready to face the rest of your evening with a little bit of pep. Plus, it will help you sleep better. 9. See a doctor. If your fatigue is persistent and you have other symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, sleeping too much or a loss of interest in your usual activities, you may want to talk to your doctor. Such symptoms can be a sign of depression. 10. Take a walk. Take a break at work or at home. Some fresh air can help clear your mind and fight that foggy feeling. Believe it or not, walking can help you fight off the blues. A recent Duke University Medical Center study found that a quick 10-minute walk may be enough to make clinically depressed people feel better. The study involved a group of inactive, depressed people who were 50 and older. After just eight minutes of walking, 82 percent of them said they felt less tense, tired and angry.

Six months ago the Taylor family’s world was turned upside down with the sudden loss of Terry Taylor. Leaving behind a wife, two children and a nearly one-year-old grandson, Terry was killed while helping a police officer in the parking lot of the Bellaire-area Maaco Collision Repair he owned for 21 years... on Christmas Eve. Terry’s selfless act will be honored by a $50,000 endowment that will give a $5,000 scholarship in perpetuity to a Cy-Fair ISD student who wishes to pursue a criminal justice degree. Board members of the 100 Club, a non-profit organization that gives financial aid to families of those in law enforcement and fire fighters who are killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty, voted unanimously to make this gift to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. “Terry was a citizen who went above and beyond the call of duty to help an officer in need,” said Rick Hartley, Executive Director of the 100 Club. “It is a small way we can say thank you to Terry’s family.” The Taylor family was first offered financial assistance by the 100 Club but Kevin, Terry’s son who owns another Maaco Collision Repair in the Cy-Fair area, didn’t feel right about accepting the offer. “We wanted to give back to the community instead.” A 27-year military officer veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Terry Taylor was honored in February by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation at the annual Salute to Heroes event. Impressed by positive impact the organization is making in the lives of community students, Kevin had already started to visit with the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation about making a contribution for someone in need when he was approached by the 100 Club with their generous gift. “My dad believed strongly in the importance of a solid education. My sister is an engineer in St. Louis and my father and I both earned master degrees,” said Kevin. “We feel like it’s so important to help someone attend school who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.”

The Taylor family moved to the Cy-Fair community in the 1970s from Kentucky. “My mom still lives in the same house I grew up in,” said Kevin. Terry was a quiet man who worked hard but also enjoyed camping and fishing. “He was an old-school military guy who always helped someone when they needed it,” said Kevin. “He never drank alcohol or smoked a day in his life and loved walking every night with his dogs,” said Kevin. On Christmas Eve morning, with his wife Judy by his side and plans to close up early to celebrate the holiday, Terry saw an officer having trouble apprehending a criminal after a car chase ended in the parking lot of his shop. Both Bellaire Police Department Sergeant Jimmie Norman and Terry Taylor were allegedly shot and killed by the criminal who is awaiting trial for the murders. Kevin’s son turned one on the day of Terry’s funeral. “My son will never get to know his grandfather. My father didn’t get a chance to know his only grandson,” said Kevin. “We are trying to make sense of what happened and why. We know that bad things happen to good people and that we are living God’s plan so there is a reason, a purpose... I feel like this scholarship is one positive thing that will come out of this,” he said.
BUS BUDDIES, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2013 - 2014 SCHOOL YEAR
Bus Buddies is a partnership between the Cy-Fair community and Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District to provide assistance to elementary students helping them get off the bus at the correct location. The program requires one “Bus Buddy” per elementary bus the first three days of school. The approximate time commitment is from 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM on August 26th, 27th and 28th. You may choose to volunteer one, two or all three days. Your job is to simply assist the bus driver with making sure the children get off the bus at their correct stops.

(3) Enjoy helping the kids and driver! When and Where is the 1 Hour Training? Training is held at our Berry Center located at 8877 Barker Cypress Rd., Cypress, TX. August 19th - 9:30 AM -10:30 AM August 20th - 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM (evening session) August 21st - 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM The Partners in Education (PIE) department is looking for the same strong Bus Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the Cy-Fair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. We do encourage all Bus Buddy volunteers to wear a shirt indicating the business or organization they are representing so that our employees, parents and the community will be aware of your organization’s support of CFISD. Volunteers wear many hats! We are askingYOU to wear the very important “Bus Buddy Hat” and support our number one priority goal - the safety and security of our students! Please, register for a training session and choose your school by visiting www.cfisd. net and selecting “Bus Buddies.” For additional information about the program, please contact the CFISD Partners in Education Department at 281-894-3949.

The importance of recognizing volunteer contributions and the support of our business and community partners is essential to a strong volunteer and partners program. The administration, students and staff of CFISD enjoyed hosting and entertaining over a thousand of the tens of thousands of volunteers and supporters that have given so much to help us achieve our goals this year. With the commitment and generosity of several community businesses, tickets to this appreciation event were free. PBK Architects continues to serve as the underwriter for the VIPS Appreciation Luncheon. Additionally, the event was sponsored by: Allsafe Storage, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation, Cy-Hope, GameTime by Total Recreation Products, H-E-B, Kroger, Lone Star College Cy-Fair, Spring Creek Barbeque, Towne Lake and Rock Creek. As a district, we are so fortunate to have thousands of volunteers who actively give their time to our kids and many business and community partners who adopt and support our schools. As Superintendent, Dr. Mark Henry, says, “each volunteer plays a very key role in the lives our students and staff and it has not gone unnoticed. In these past years, with a struggling economy and the district dealing with huge budget cuts, you have kept us on top by being generous with your time and sharing your many talents to make our district the great success that it is.”

You may have heard of the area of town called “The Corridor.” Unwanted dogs are left there to fend for themselves. Well, somebody let me out there and drove away when my back was turned. Boy, was I scared! I had never been on my own and was not sure what to do. Thankfully, some kind people came along and offered me food, water and then invited me into the warm car. Whew! Major relief! I am cute, fun, with some puppy months left in me and with no hard feelings. I love to run, play and would really enjoy some kids of my own to throw a ball or take me out for a stroll in the neighborhood.

You do not need to be Ranger Rick or Martha Stewart (though you may find yourself developing unexpected talents). Don’t feel that you could make the commitment to be a troop leader? Do you have a special skill that you would be willing to share or a willingness to help on a limited basis? Please give us a call - we’d like to talk to you! A special event may need YOUR particular talent or skill! Please contact Dianne Massie (dianne.massie@att.net) or call 281-5509148. The council website is www.gssjc.org.
Due to the administrative changes in San Jacinto Council, we have moved away from our service unit structure. The Copper Creek Meadows community has been created by merging the former Bear Creek, Copper Corners and Blue Bonnet Meadows service units. A team drawn from members of each of the three service units has been at work for several months during this transition process to create the structure for our new community. Membership is drawn from fourteen elementary schools and the corresponding middle and high schools. The elementary schools served are: Lieder, Metcalf, Wilson, Tipps and Texas Christian School; Birkes, Fiest and Lowery; Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. The plan is that more people and more resources mean more activities and more fun for all of us! You can read more about these changes in the Golden Link or on the Council website, www.gssjc.org.

Boy Scouts BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
An open planning meeting was held on July 14th. Rally Days (when we recruit new members and leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled after schools are back in session. Look for more information soon!
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.
Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
We also need adult (over 18) leaders for our troops. We can’t form new troops without new leaders! You need a background check and a little training to get started, but lots more training is available. Our leaders are of all ages, both sexes and a wide range of interests.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which

BOY SCOUT GIVES BACK TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND HIS COMMUNITY
Approved by the TWC Career Schools and Colleges
Thanks to the efforts of Boy Scout, Jacob Sealey, his Eagle Scout service project has provided new wood duck boxes for the wildlife of Lakes on Eldridge. Wood duck boxes provide safe shelter and a place to raise young for the various small waterfowl that reside in the area. These boxes were installed in and around the vegetation on some of the smaller ponds. An Eagle Scout service project is the opportunity for a Boy Scout to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of any religious institution, school or community. This is the culmination of the Eagle Scout candidate’s leadership training and it requires a significant effort on his part. The Scout must develop a project plan, coordinate fundraising to provide the necessary materials, schedule the work organize the personnel needed and give leadership to others in order to direct the project to its completion. Jacob, 15, is a Boy Scout with Troop 1283 based out of St. Elizabeth Ann-Seton Church in Houston. He has worked his way through the ranks from a young Cub Scout to the final rank in Boy Scouts, going above and beyond the requirements and, is now awaiting his Eagle board-of-review to become an Eagle Scout (the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve). We would like to thank Jacob, all of his volunteers and the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for their efforts and a job well done. The benefits of providing your service to the needs of our local wildlife and to this community are greatly appreciated.

Cub Scout Pack 1445 is chartered by the Lowery PTO and has monthly Pack meetings at Lowery Elementary. Scouting is a great opportunity for boys to learn new skills and valuable lessons while spending time doing fun activities with their friends and family. The summer has started off as an action-packed and adventurous time for the organization. At our Bridging Ceremony on June 2nd, we promoted Tiger Cubs to Wolves, Wolves to Bears and Bears to Webelos and wrapped up an extremely successful year for Pack 1445. Next, we had 12 Scouts attend the District Day Camp, earning numerous achievements towards their new rank and learning a variety of new skills. The Scouts had a great time with activities like Archery and BB gun shooting; Soccer and Ultimate Frisbee and working on craftsman activities including building a TV tray table. On the 4th of July, several of our Scouts participated in the Southdown parade and one of our leaders carried the flag through the parade. The boys had a terrific time. If you are interested in joining Pack 1445, please keep an eye out for our Fall Rally night coming to Lowery Cafeteria in September. We look forward to seeing you there!

Theater/Fine Arts MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
13707 West Road
FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. ‘BEGINNING WITH BEETHOVEN’ TAKES HOLD OF HOUSTON
‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino.

“Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.”

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH
Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 - Oct 15, 2013. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
