BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY
As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride. • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas. • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop. • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO. • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.”
• Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them. • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults. • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance. • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized. • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. Visit www.missingkids.com for even more back to school safety tips.

(CPV) POOL & PARKS COMMITTEE
The pool had a theft and trespassing this last month. The trespassers came in after 11:30 PM at night and stole 2 tables. They jumped the fence and handed the tables over to the others on the other side. Three young men were caught on tape and were wearing their shirts over their head like hoods, so it was hard to distinguish their faces. This has been turned over to the Sheriff’s department for further investigation. If anyone hears anything about this, please call SCS or the Sheriff’s Department. Last month, we had the life ring removed from the fence, as well as the rope securing the deep end of the pool on several occasions. This is not a TOY and could save someone’s life!

Cameras are still monitoring activity, so be aware that you are on tape. If this type of theft and trespassing continues, we may have to shut the pool down for the rest of the season. This pool is for the homeowners to enjoy with their families and is there for your enjoyment. Also, a big reminder that you must have a key card to get in and you are not to let anyone in unless they are guests of the homeowner at the pool. Jumping the fence is TRESPASSING and carries a misdemeanor fine and charge! Several cars have been towed this last month on account that they were parked illegally after 9 PM. Suspicious activity has also been reported after park hours. The Sheriff’s Department is frequently driving by and checking the grounds. Please do not park after hours.
(CPV) A WORD FROM THE BOARD
We hope everyone enjoyed their 4th of July! Most important, it was great that no incidents were reported considering the drought situation. I believe all the homeowners were very careful and abided by the rules of safety. With the “no rain” situation, we find ourselves constantly watering our yards and gardens to keep them alive and green. Conservation measures have not been set up to date, but we may expect them if the drought continues.

Dogs and cats wander the neighborhood during the day and love to get into the trash. If you are trimming your trees, remember that the limbs must be bundled in 4-foot sections or they will not be picked up by the trash service.

Reminder that no changes can be made without prior approval from the ACC Committee! Forms need to be filled out and submitted for prior approval. Roofing, painting, landscaping or any major changes must be approved by the Architectural Review Board. If you are not sure of the deed restrictions or what colors are allowable under the current deed restrictions, please contact SCS Management at 281-463-1777. Many homes are in desperate need of painting or mildew cleaning! Any modification of the front yard, etc. that is out of the ordinary, should be approved before landscaping with the Architectural Board Committee at SCS. Please trim ALL bushes, trees, shrubs that are planted in the cross corner lots /section of the street! These must be kept trimmed and maintained for a good, safe view of incoming traffic at all times! SCS will be looking closely at all intersections during their drive through to insure that this is in compliance with the deed restrictions. There has been reported instances where palms, trees or large shrubbery is overgrown and not providing a safe view of the cross intersection. You may obtain your form for Architectural Board approval by visiting the Copperfield website at www.copperfield.org or contact SCS.

(MG) LAWN MOWING
It is grass season. So here is some facts from the Horticultural Department of Texas A&M. St. Augustine Grass mowing (most widely used type of grass in our client neighborhood yards) mowing heights may range from 1 to 3 inches depending on the frequency of mowing and the degree of shade present.
August 2013
Copperfield
At mowing heights below two inches, St. Augustine grass should be mowed every five days during late spring and summer. At a 2 1/2 inch mowing height, a 7-10 day mowing schedule is adequate. Grass grows quickly during the summer months! You can read more about this and other horticultural matters at: http://aggiehorticulture.tamu.edu.

Deed Restriction investigators are going to become more vigilant in citing the homes in violation. You are encouraged to report homes that are chronic violators to Graham Management. A link to contact Graham Management is also on the Copperfield website. You will remain anonymous. Your reports are appreciated.

(SC) FOURTH OF JULY PARADE AND CELEBRATION
On July 4th, Southcreek Village held their Annual Fourth of July parade. We had over 700 people attend the parade and celebration. Families were encouraged to decorate bikes, strollers, etc. and then participate in the parade. The parade began at the Autumn Laurel pool in the morning and proceeded down Royal Gardens to the Park Falls pool. Thank you to everyone who participated in the parade! Just to mention a few of those who participated: Sergeant Gary Rodgers and some of Deputies from Harris County Sherriff’s Department participated in the parade. The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department joined us with a ladder truck and a fire truck. CFISD Board member, Tom Jackson, dressed up as a Revolutionary soldier. The parade also included a Delorean car. And, even the Chick Fil-A cow participated in the parade! After the parade, families enjoyed food and summer fun at the Park Falls Park. The children enjoyed playing on water inflatables. Snacks, drinks, hot dogs and Snow Cones were served. Everyone enjoyed seeing the fire truck spray water and hearing the Civil War cannon go off! Those attending the party had the opportunity to have a temporary tattoo and caricatures drawn. We would like to

(SD) BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS FOR PARENTS
One of the hardest things about going back to school is getting back into the swing of things. It’s hard for children and parents, who have had months away from the rigidly scheduled days of classes, homework, sports practice and other extracurricular activities. Since there are a few weeks before school starts, put bedtime battles to rest now. If you start immediately, you can slowly adjust the lax summer sleep schedule to a school night bedtime. Put your children to bed 10 minutes earlier each night - that way the switch from 9:30 PM to 8 PM won’t be such a shock. Prepare for the deluge of forms. In the coming weeks, you’ll be getting everything from school supplies lists to health forms to permission slips to contact lists. Think through the organization of all that information now. Collect all forms you receive for each child and go through them at one time with your child(ren). Set up a filing system for everything. (You might consider scanning the forms to your computer, keeping a digital record rather than a cluttered paper trail.) Post your child’s class schedule somewhere you can see it. You’re guaranteed a better response when you ask “What games did you play in PE today?” or “What did Mrs. Martin show you in art?” rather than “How was school?” Shop your closets before hitting the stores. You never know what you might find. There may be barely used or new school supplies, forgotten clothes or an older backpack that’s suddenly trendy again. Keep receipts. Sure, the magenta ink pens look cool in the store, but what happens if your child gets to school and the teacher requires they use pencil

Volunteer your time or expertise. Dozens of research studies have shown that children whose parents are involved in their school do better academically and socially. Teachers appreciate parents who volunteer to come into the classroom or who are willing to raise funds for needed supplies or to advocate on their behalf. Run inside and play. This year, when you get home from work and school, don’t jump into the chores. Rather, make it a point to spend at least 15 to 30 minutes connecting as a family: play a game, take a walk, snuggle on the couch. This simple tweak in your evening schedule will do wonders to reduce whining, sibling rivalry and marital strife. Hopefully these tips will reduce the stress associated with the start of a new school year.

In case you have not heard of the Little Free Library, its purpose is to promote literacy and the love of reading and build a sense of community as neighbors share skills, creativity and wisdom through reading. The idea is simple “Take a Book, Give a Book.” The library will initially be set up with books that Erin has received from donations. The idea is that it

(WC) CRIME PREVENTION
If you cannot keep your vehicle in the garage, then please keep your vehicles locked at all times and remove all valuables. Vehicles are broken into and articles are taken each month in Westcreek and most of the time, vehicles were left unlocked. Truck tailgates are being targeted as an easy theft. The owner of a pickup should park the truck in a garage or back the pick up as close to the garage door as possible. Tailgates are easy to steal and bring in lots of money in the resale market. Be aware and alert for suspicious persons and activities. Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff Dept.’s non-emergency number 713-221-6000 (#1) remember to program this number into your cell phone.
(WC) NATIONAL NIGHT OUT (NNO)
Neighborhood Night Out will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 1, 2013. Please mark this date on your calendar and get to know your block captain. Many streets in Westcreek do not have a block captain. Serving as a block captain takes very little time, but it is a significant contribution to the neighborhood. If you would like more information on the role of a block captain and the minimum time requirement involved, contact Larry Berger at larry.berger@sug.com. Also, for National Night Out, you don’t have to be a block captain to organize the gathering of your neighbors on your street. Contact Larry Berger for the details.

www.WeBuyGoldCenter.com Be a friend to the Landscape Committee - If you see property near yours, like common areas, cul-de-sacs, a property on the market and not occupied, a family on vacation or your neighbors’ yard in need of some extra water, perhaps sharing your irrigation in these areas will help preserve our areas in these hot months and keep everything living. Friends helping friends is what makes our neighborhood the nicest and most welcoming in all of Copperfield. As a reminder, boats, trailers and motor homes should not be parked overnight on the street or in driveways. Many of us may be returning from vacations where these vehicles were utilized, but please abide by the HOA by-laws at all times - our streets are too narrow to safely drive on with such vehicles parked on, especially at night and beg for unwanted graffiti or damage.
(WC) AUGUST GARDENING TIPS LAWN/GARDEN CARE
As we head into late Summer and then Fall, preparation and prevention are the two key terms we should be considering as we address and deal with our lawn and garden concerns: • Insect control - thank you everyone that participated in the community pest control treatment weekend that was scheduled in June. It really helps when as many people within the community treat their yards for fire ants, mosquitoes and cinch bugs at the same time to prevent these pests from simply hopping over into a neighbor’s untreated yard and then ultimately returning to give more grief. o If your lawn is displaying patches of yellowing that you suspect is fungus or water deprivation, it may be caused by chinch bugs. Inspect the suspected areas closely for small, flea-sized bugs with white wing pods. Young chinch bugs will appear as orange and black. The excessive heat really brings these pests out! o If you are unsure of their presence, take a coffee can or similar container, remove the top and bottom, embed the can in an affected area and fill with
16
Call 1-855-351-GOLD
water. If chinch bugs are present they will rise to the top of the water within the can. o The most effective pesticide to apply is a liquid spray containing permethrin, cypermethrin or deltamethrin. This must be applied 3 separate times within a 21 day period - the egg cycle the chinch bugs leave behind must be killed, otherwise they will return. A liquid product will permeate all areas better and more effectively than a granular product, ensuring the infestation is defeated. o And please - if you see areas in cul-de-sacs, along connecting streets or otherwise not cared for directly by homeowners due to insects, fungus, or lack of irrigation, PLEASE help us by bringing them to the attention of Graham Management so that immediate attention can be placed on the areas to prevent substantial damage. • Don’t forget your trees! Many of our trees require lots of water and compete with our lawns to get it. Magnolia, Elm and Ash varieties are especially in need of deep watering to prevent summer heat damage. It is much easier and more visually pleasing to apply extra water now than to extract a dead tree later in the season. • Lawn looking generally yellow and insect and fungus has been ruled out as the culprit? Your lawn may need an application of liquid iron. This typically should only need to be done once annually, so check your feeding schedule to be sure to not over-apply iron. • All this talk fungus may make us forget not everything requires excessive gulps of H2O. If your Bougainvillea specimens appear to be growing well but fail to bloom to your satisfaction, remember that stress actually causes these plants to bloom. If containerized, allow the soil to dry out substantially and allow for the foliage to slightly wilt. Then apply water, but do not begin to over-water. If in-ground, you may need to consider either leaving in the container slightly above ground level and hiding the container with mulch in order to prevent excess water entry or severing some the roots around the root ball via a sharp shovel to introduce stress. • Remember to feed sago palms and azaleas one more summer feeding before we enter into fall. Most area sagos are looking really great this year.

100 CLUB FUNDS ENDOWMENT FOR TERRY TAYLOR
Six months ago the Taylor family’s world was turned upside down with the sudden loss of Terry Taylor. Leaving behind a wife, two children and a nearly one-year-old grandson, Terry was killed while helping a police officer in the parking lot of the Bellaire-area Maaco Collision Repair he owned for 21 years... on Christmas Eve. Terry’s selfless act will be honored by a $50,000 endowment that will give a $5,000 scholarship in perpetuity to a Cy-Fair ISD student who wishes to pursue a criminal justice degree. Board members of the 100 Club, a non-profit organization that gives financial aid to families of those in law enforcement and fire fighters who are killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty, voted unanimously to make this gift to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. “Terry was a citizen who went above and beyond the call of duty to help an officer in need,” said Rick Hartley, Executive Director of the 100 Club. “It is a small way we can say thank you to Terry’s family.” The Taylor family was first offered financial assistance by the 100 Club but Kevin, Terry’s son who owns another Maaco Collision Repair in the Cy-Fair area, didn’t feel right about accepting the offer. “We wanted to give back to the community instead.” A 27-year military officer veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Terry Taylor was honored in February by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation at the annual Salute to Heroes event. Impressed by positive impact the organization is making in the lives of community students, Kevin had already started to visit with the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation about making a contribution for someone in need when he was approached by the 100 Club with their generous gift. “My dad believed strongly in the importance of a solid education. My sister is an engineer in St. Louis and my father and I both earned master degrees,” said Kevin. “We feel like it’s so important to help someone attend school who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.” The Taylor family moved to the Cy-Fair community in the 1970s from Kentucky. “My mom still lives in the same house I grew up in,” said Kevin. Terry was a quiet man who worked hard but

also enjoyed camping and fishing. “He was an old-school military guy who always helped someone when they needed it,” said Kevin. “He never drank alcohol or smoked a day in his life and loved walking every night with his dogs,” said Kevin. On Christmas Eve morning, with his wife Judy by his side and plans to close up early to celebrate the holiday, Terry saw an officer having trouble apprehending a criminal after a car chase ended in the parking lot of his shop. Both Bellaire Police Department Sergeant Jimmie Norman and Terry Taylor were allegedly shot and killed by the criminal who is awaiting trial for the murders. Kevin’s son turned one on the day of Terry’s funeral. “My son will never get to know his grandfather. My father didn’t get a chance to know his only grandson,” said Kevin. “We are trying to make sense of what happened and why. We know that bad things happen to good people and that we are living God’s plan so there is a reason, a purpose... I feel like this scholarship is one positive thing that will come out of this,” he said.
BUS BUDDIES, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 2013 - 2014 SCHOOL YEAR
Come be a part of the “Bus Buddies Volunteer Program” in our Cypress-Fairbanks ISD schools. What is Bus Buddies? Bus Buddies is a partnership between the Cy-Fair community and CypressFairbanks Independent School District to provide assistance to elementary students helping them get off the bus at the correct location. The program requires one “Bus Buddy” per elementary bus the first three days of school. The approximate time commitment is from 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM on August 26th, 27th and 28th. You may choose to volunteer one, two or all three days. Your job is to simply assist the bus driver with making sure the children get off the bus at their correct stops.
Copperfield
What is Required? (1) Attend one of the training sessions, if not previously trained. (2) Arrive and sign in at your assigned school where campus staff will assist you. (3) Enjoy helping the kids and driver! When and Where is the 1 Hour Training? Training is held at our Berry Center located at 8877 Barker Cypress Rd., Cypress, TX. August 19th - 9:30 AM -10:30 AM August 20th - 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM (evening session) August 21st - 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM The Partners in Education (PIE) department is looking for the same strong Bus Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the CyFair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. We do encourage all Bus Buddy volunteers to wear a shirt indicating the business or organization they are representing so that our employees, parents and the community will be aware of your organization’s support of CFISD. Volunteers wear many hats! We are askingYOU to wear the very important “Bus Buddy Hat” and support our number one priority goal - the safety and security of our students! Please, register for a training session and choose your school by visiting www.cfisd.net and selecting “Bus Buddies.” For additional information about the program, please contact the CFISD Partners in Education Department at 281-894-3949.

CY-FAIR ISD CELEBRATES VOLUNTEERS, COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS PARTNERS
The importance of recognizing volunteer contributions and the support of our business and community partners is essential to a strong volunteer and partners program. The administration, students and staff of CFISD enjoyed hosting and entertaining over a thousand of the tens of thousands of volunteers and supporters that have given so much to help us achieve our goals this year. With the commitment and generosity of several community businesses, tickets to this appreciation event were free. PBK Architects continues to serve as the underwriter for the VIPS Appreciation Luncheon. Additionally, the event was sponsored by: Allsafe Storage, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation, Cy-Hope, GameTime by Total Recreation Products, H-E-B, Kroger, Lone Star College Cy-Fair, Spring Creek Barbeque, Towne Lake and Rock Creek.
As a district, we are so fortunate to have thousands of volunteers who actively give their time to our kids and many business and community partners who adopt and support our schools. As Superintendent, Dr. Mark Henry, says, “each volunteer plays a very key role in the lives our students and staff and it has not gone unnoticed. In these past years, with a struggling economy and the district dealing with huge budget cuts, you have kept us on top by being generous with your time and sharing your many talents to make our district the great success that it is.”

Cy-Falls High School Wednesday - 8 months, 20 lbs. Very sweet/ outgoing. Good with dogs, kids, cats unknown. Med-high activity level. You may have heard of the area of town called “The Corridor.” Unwanted dogs are left there to fend for themselves. Well, somebody let me out there and drove away when my back was turned. Boy, was I scared! I had never been on my own and was not sure what to do. Thankfully, some kind people came along and offered me food, water and then invited me into the warm car. Whew! Major relief! I am cute, fun, with some puppy months left in me and with no hard feelings. I love to run, play and would really enjoy some kids of my own to throw a ball or take me out for a stroll in the neighborhood.

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS - THE COMMUNITY IS BIGGER NOW!
Due to the administrative changes in San Jacinto Council, we have moved away from our service unit structure. The Copper Creek Meadows community has been created by merging the former Bear Creek, Copper Corners and Blue Bonnet Meadows service units.

A team drawn from members of each of the three service units has been at work for several months during this transition process to create the structure for our new community. Membership is drawn from fourteen elementary schools and the corresponding middle and high schools. The elementary schools served are: Lieder, Metcalf, Wilson, Tipps and Texas Christian School; Birkes, Fiest and Lowery; Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. The plan is that more people and more resources mean more activities and more fun for all of us! You can read more about these changes in the Golden Link or on the Council website, www.gssjc.org. An open planning meeting was held on July 14th. Rally Days (when we recruit new members and leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled after schools are back in session. Look for more information soon! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. We also need adult (over 18) leaders for our troops. We can’t form new troops without new leaders! You need a background check and a little training to get started, but lots more training is available. Our leaders are of all ages, both sexes and a wide range of interests. You do not need to be Ranger Rick or Martha Stewart (though you may find yourself developing unexpected talents). Don’t feel that you could make the commitment to be a troop leader? Do you have a special skill that you would be willing to share or a willingness to help on a limited basis? Please give us a call - we’d like to talk to you! A special event may need YOUR particular talent or skill! Please contact Dianne Massie (dianne.massie@att.net) or call 281-550-9148. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
Byron Bruess’
Tree Services
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.

On the way home from a church conference in 1989, Don Piper’s Ford Escort was struck head-on by an 18-wheeler, He was killed instantly - pronounced dead by four sets of paramedics. But God worked a miracle and sent Don back to a broken body. To date, 34 surgical procedures have taken place. He walks only as a result of miraculous and in some cases medically unexplainable circumstances. During the time he was dead, Piper was granted the extreme privilege of glimpsing Heaven itself. Ninety minutes after dying, Don Piper came back to life where he faced a long and grueling recovery. Don travels across the country and around the world sharing his amazing story of hope and healing. His message is simple... We can have a better life now and an eternal life someday through faith in Jesus Christ! Don has appeared and shared his miraculous story in numerous nationalmedia outlets, including Fox News, CBN, “The Today Show” on NBC and Newsweek. Copperfield Church is located at 8350 Hwy. 6 North, Houston, TX 77095, 281-856-2273. At the event, representatives from Mission Centers of Houston will also share a report on the life-changing ministry being conducted in the underserved communities in inner-city Houston, Attendees will be given an opportunity to partner with this ministry.

Bible Studies GIDEON: YOUR WEAKNESS, GOD’S STRENGTH Do you feel overwhelmed? Intimidated? Insufficient? Inexperienced? Too old? Too young? Too invisible? or Too afraid? If you’ve ever struggled with insecurity or had trouble accepting your limitations, this study will help you see how God can use your weakness to unlock his strength in you. Join us as we discover God’s sufficiency in our lives. Join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM for this 7-week video study by Pricilla Shirer. Sessions will begin Tuesday, Sept. 3 - Oct. 15, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Aug 6th - 27th. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($13) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net. LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.

Theatre, Arts & Music MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped

‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), August 17th, Saturday at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February. To find out more, visit Houston New Arts Movement online at www.artsmove. net.

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.

Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.

SPECIAL CHEERS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Special CHEERS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages living in and around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that we utilize animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits as an integral part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a non-profit organization, we are constantly looking for extra help around the farm. Therefore, Special CHEERS would like to welcome all high school and college-aged students interested in working with both children and animals to volunteer after school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e., summer camp). Please call our administrative assistant, Ms. Denise Pace, at 713-983-0075, for more information. A background check will be required of all individuals applying for a volunteer position at our facility.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
