MESSAGE FROM YOUR HOA PRESIDENT Greetings Cypress Mill Residents, I cannot believe that it is August already. Where did the year go? Here we are in the middle of summer and getting ready to send the kids back to school. I hope that you have taken advantage of the extended hours of the pool this summer. Thanks to everyone who came out to our Independence Day parade. I want to give a big thank you to Mike and Carolyn for all of their hard work to make this a success. But they could not have done it without the help of a few couples who really came to the rescue. Well, it took a while, but the new playground is in place at Cypresswood and the new shade structures are up at both Cypresswood and Cypress Mill. We have also installed turf under the two playground structures in the Estates. The new sidewalk by the retention pond in the Estates was installed by the M.U.D. The last thing I want to remind you of is the timing of putting the garbage at the street. Remember that you should not take your trash to the curb until after 6 PM the evening before pickup. This includes yard waste. If you have a lawn care crew that leaves bagged clippings by the curb, you are responsible for taking the bags back to where you store your garbage until it is time to put it out. I see bagged yard clippings all around the community on non-pickup days and we need to change this to keep our community looking nice. It is not difficult to do. Take care and God Bless,

PLAYGROUND UPDATE

JULY 4TH CELEBRATION

Thank you for all our wonderful volunteers for making the 4th of July Parade and Party a huge success. Our parade started off with Mary Jane Spevak handing out American flags to the marchers and spectators. The Fire Department led the parade with the Police Department, including our own fire engine that gave rides to the children after the parade. Everyone was greeted at the recreation center with ice pops. Kathy Foote, our wonderful face painter did her art work on 41 boys and girls and the children colored great patriotic pictures to decorate the windows. Rachel, the balloon lady, did a terrific job keeping everyone supplied with their favorite characters. There was plenty of food, drinks and laughs to say the party was a huge success.

DOGS RUNNING LOOSE/UNATTENDED HOMEOWNER INJURED!!

On June 28th, there was an incident where a senior homeowner was working in her front yard in Mills Park II when two dogs, a large black dog and small brown dog, ran towards her in a threatening manner. These two dogs may or may not have been dangerous, but put the resident in a frightening position where she felt the need to defend herself with a garden chair. Not only did this cause emotional distress but physical discomfort also.

At the beginning of July, there was a further incident where a homeowner was bitten by an unattended Weimaraner and required immediate medical attention and a dog belonging to another resident was badly mauled by the same unattended dog. The Weimaraner was subsequently caught and removed to the police authorities. If you are a pet owner, remember that there is a leash law in Houston/Cypress that requires your dog to be on a leash at all times when not on your property.

PROBLEM TREES ON MUD PROPERTY

If you see a tree on MUD property that needs attention, i.e. dead leaves, broken branches, insect disease, etc., please report it to the MUD board on their website www.cypresshillmud1.com.

Are you interested in seeing continuing or more social activities in Cypress Mill, especially for your children? Then call Mike Crahan and volunteer. Current events needing help are the Easter Egg Hunt, Santa Visit and the 4th of July Celebration. Without more volunteers these events are likely to go away. Your HOA Board has done a terrific job is providing better/new playground equipment, new chairs and covered seating areas at the pools, so why not have some fun with your kids and take advantages of these facilities.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS

As summer draws to a close, back-to-school season is in full effect. Safety should be a priority for every family as children return to classrooms this fall. It is important for parents to stay up-to-date on the proper safety precautions and share this information with their children to keep them safe throughout the school year. Back-to-School Safety Checklist - Use this checklist to review important safety procedures to make sure your children are fully prepared for the school year. TRANSPORTATION Traveling to School Safely - Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the bus to school, it is extremely important that they take proper safety precautions. Back to School: Safety Tips for Motorists - Not just parents, but all motorists, need to know how to safely share the road with school buses, pedestrians and bicyclists. On dark mornings, watch for students waiting for the school bus at the curb. Teen Driving Safety - The back-to-school season is a great time to learn about Graduated Driver Licensing and what practices will work best for your family. SCHOOL SAFETY Playground Safety - Every year more than 200,000 children visit hospital emergency rooms because of playground injuries, many of which could have been prevented. Backpack Safety - Overloaded backpacks continue to cause injuries, including bruises, sprains and strains to the back and shoulder and fractures. Preventing Bullying - Every adult plays an important role in addressing bullying and making schools a safe and respectful place for all children.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN CYPRESS MILL?

ATTENTION PET OWNERS

The block captains are all listed in the Cypress Mill Messenger with either their phone number and/or email address.

www.cypressmillhoa.com You can see/make announcements & see/post photos. This is YOUR website, so take a look!!

As much as we love our pets and consider them part of the family, please be respectful of your neighbors and remember the following: • If your yard backs onto a retention pond, please do not throw feces (or other trash) over the fence. Often this lands on the walking path which is both an eyesore for walkers and hazardous, especially for small children. • Do not leave your dog(s) outside for extended periods if consistent barking is likely to annoy your neighbors. If this is not corrected, you may get a visit from your local deputy. • Please restrain your dog from pounding against your neighbor’s fence. There have been several instances where dogs have broken through the fence into a neighbor’s yard. If your dog does break a picket, then replace it as soon as possible. • Limit the number of pets to the number as directed in your section bylaws. • Always carry a poop bag when walking your dog.

Do you want to know what’s happening in your neighborhood without waiting for the Messenger? If so, please let your block captain have your email address so that they can keep you informed of current news and events.

If your street does not have a block captain, think about volunteering…. it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors and be one step ahead of the news. Contact Mike Crahan on M.Crahan@pmghouston.com, if you would like to volunteer.

NEWSLETTER DEADLINE

The deadline for submitting articles/information to the Cypress Mill Messenger is the 6th of the preceding month. Please email articles to: M.Crahan@pmghouston.com Information should be sent as an attachment in Word document format.
