LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma. Nevertheless, if you lose or find a pet, the email list on the website has been very helpful in reuniting dogs and their families.
BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY
As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride. • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas. • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their
safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop. • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO. • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.” • Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them. • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults. • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance. • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized. • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. Visit www.missingkids.com for even more back to school safety tips.

HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB JULY YARD OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Judy and Ridge Stockdale at 7806 Sapphire Valley - Yard of the Month winners for July! The Stockdales’ deeply shaded front yard is a great summer garden, looking cool and inviting during the day, yet having a completely different look at night. During the day, the mature trees create deep shade, while bright white caladiums placed in circular beds near the walkway match the home. Shrubs pruned into architectural forms surround the house with contrasting textures and differing shades of green. At night the white flowers appear to float due to their stems and leaves fading into the shadows of the evening, while the colors of the variegated shrubs become much more pronounced. July’s Yard of the Month is a lovely summer garden to see for its inviting cool shade during the day and its ethereal white blooms at night.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

100 CLUB FUNDS ENDOWMENT FOR TERRY TAYLOR
Six months ago the Taylor family’s world was turned upside down with the sudden loss of Terry Taylor. Leaving behind a wife, two children and a nearly one-year-old grandson, Terry was killed while helping a police officer in the parking lot of the Bellaire-area Maaco Collision Repair he owned for 21 years... on Christmas Eve. Terry’s selfless act will be honored by a $50,000 endowment that will give a $5,000 scholarship in perpetuity to a Cy-Fair ISD student who wishes to pursue a criminal justice degree. Board members of the 100 Club, a non-profit organization that gives financial aid to families of those in law enforcement and fire fighters who are killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty, voted unanimously to make this gift to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. “Terry was a citizen who went above and beyond the call of duty to help an officer in need,” said Rick Hartley, Executive Director of the 100 Club. “It is a small way we can say thank you to Terry’s family.” The Taylor family was first offered financial assistance by the 100 Club but Kevin, Terry’s son who owns another Maaco Collision Repair in the Cy-Fair area, didn’t feel right about accepting the offer. “We wanted to give back to the community instead.” A 27-year military officer veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Terry Taylor was honored in February by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation at the annual Salute to Heroes event. Impressed by positive impact the organization is making in the lives of community students, Kevin had already started to visit with the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation about making a contribution for someone in need when he was approached by the 100 Club with their generous gift. “My dad believed strongly in the importance of a solid education. My sister is an engineer in St. Louis and my father and I both earned master degrees,”

said Kevin. “We feel like it’s so important to help someone attend school who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.” The Taylor family moved to the Cy-Fair community in the 1970s from Kentucky. “My mom still lives in the same house I grew up in,” said Kevin. Terry was a quiet man who worked hard but also enjoyed camping and fishing. “He was an old-school military guy who always helped someone when they needed it,” said Kevin. “He never drank alcohol or smoked a day in his life and loved walking every night with his dogs,” said Kevin. On Christmas Eve morning, with his wife Judy by his side and plans to close up early to celebrate the holiday, Terry saw an officer having trouble apprehending a criminal after a car chase ended in the parking lot of his shop. Both Bellaire Police Department Sergeant Jimmie Norman and Terry Taylor were allegedly shot and killed by the criminal who is awaiting trial for the murders. Kevin’s son turned one on the day of Terry’s funeral. “My son will never get to know his grandfather. My father didn’t get a chance to know his only grandson,” said Kevin. “We are trying to make sense of what happened and why. We know that bad things happen to good people and that we are living God’s plan so there is a reason, a purpose... I feel like this scholarship is one positive thing that will come out of this,” he said.

The Partners in Education (PIE) department is looking for the same strong Bus Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the CyFair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. We do encourage all Bus Buddy volunteers to wear a shirt indicating the business or organization they are representing so that our employees, parents and the community will be aware of your organization’s support of CFISD. Volunteers wear many hats! We are askingYOU to wear the very important “Bus Buddy Hat” and support our number one priority goal - the safety and security of our students! Please, register for a training session and choose your school by visiting www.cfisd.net and selecting “Bus Buddies.” For additional information about the program, please contact the CFISD Partners in Education Department at 281-894-3949.

CY-FAIR ISD CELEBRATES VOLUNTEERS, COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS PARTNERS
The importance of recognizing volunteer contributions and the support of our business and community partners is essential to a strong volunteer and partners program. The administration, students and staff of CFISD enjoyed hosting and entertaining over a thousand of the tens of thousands of volunteers and supporters that have given so much to help us achieve our goals this year. With the commitment and generosity of several community businesses, tickets to this appreciation event were free. PBK Architects continues to serve as the underwriter for the VIPS Appreciation Luncheon. Additionally, the event was sponsored by: Allsafe Storage, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation, Cy-Hope, GameTime by Total Recreation Products, H-E-B, Kroger, Lone Star College Cy-Fair, Spring Creek Barbeque, Towne Lake and Rock Creek.
As a district, we are so fortunate to have thousands of volunteers who actively give their time to our kids and many business and community partners who adopt and support our schools. As Superintendent, Dr. Mark Henry, says, “each volunteer plays a very key role in the lives our students and staff and it has not gone unnoticed. In these past years, with a struggling economy and the district dealing with huge budget cuts, you have kept us on top by being generous with your time and sharing your many talents to make our district the great success that it is.”

Cy-Falls High School Wednesday - 8 months, 20 lbs. Very sweet/ outgoing. Good with dogs, kids, cats unknown. Med-high activity level. You may have heard of the area of town called “The Corridor.” Unwanted dogs are left there to fend for themselves. Well, somebody let me out there and drove away when my back was turned. Boy, was I scared! I had never been on my own and was not sure what to do. Thankfully, some kind people came along and offered me food, water and then invited me into the warm car. Whew! Major relief! I am cute, fun, with some puppy months left in me and with no hard feelings. I love to run, play and would really enjoy some kids of my own to throw a ball or take me out for a stroll in the neighborhood.
Serena is a beautiful kitten, approximately 4 Months old. She has a gentle, playful disposition. Serena spends her days batting toys around. She is longing for a forever home.

Scouts GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS - THE COMMUNITY IS BIGGER NOW!
Due to the administrative changes in San Jacinto Council, we have moved away from our service unit structure. The Copper Creek Meadows community has been created by merging the former Bear Creek, Copper Corners and Blue Bonnet Meadows service units. A team drawn from members of each of the three service units has been at work for several months during this transition process to create the structure for our new community. Membership is drawn from fourteen elementary schools and the corresponding middle and high schools. The elementary schools served are: Lieder, Metcalf, Wilson, Tipps and Texas Christian School; Birkes, Fiest and Lowery; Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. The plan is that more people and more resources mean more activities and more fun for all of us! You can read more about these changes in the Golden Link or on the Council website, www.gssjc.org. An open planning meeting was held on July 14th. Rally Days (when we recruit new members and leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled after schools are back in session. Look for more information soon! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

We want to
We also need adult (over 18) leaders for our troops. We can’t form new troops without new leaders! You need a background check and a little training to get started, but lots more training is available. Our leaders are of all ages, both sexes and a wide range of interests. You do not need to be Ranger Rick or Martha Stewart (though you may find yourself developing unexpected talents). Don’t feel that you could make the commitment to be a troop leader? Do you have a special skill that you would be willing to share or a willingness to help on a limited basis? Please give us a call - we’d like to talk to you! A special event may need YOUR particular talent or skill! Please contact Dianne Massie (dianne.massie@att.net) or call 281-550-9148. The council website is www.gssjc.org.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School. Please contact Paul Cowan, Copperhead District Executive (713-689-9703 or email eaglewithpalms@yahoo.com) to find join a Scouting unit near you.

WE CAN DO IT ALL! NO JOB IS TOO SMALL.
GIDEON: YOUR WEAKNESS, GOD’S STRENGTH Do you feel overwhelmed? Intimidated? Insufficient? Inexperienced? Too old? Too young? Too invisible? or Too afraid? If you’ve ever struggled with insecurity or had trouble accepting your limitations, this study will help you see how God can use your weakness to unlock his strength in you. Join us as we discover God’s sufficiency in our lives. Join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM for this 7-week video study by Pricilla Shirer. Sessions will begin Tuesday, Sept. 3 - Oct. 15, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Aug 6th - 27th. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($13) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net. LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.

Theatre, Arts & Music MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season.
FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013.

A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre.
Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www. mildredsumbrella.com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

“Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), August 17th, Saturday at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.
Houston Area Project Linus, a nonprofit organization that provides new, handmade blankets for children who are seriously ill or traumatized, can use the following items you might be discarding: • Fabric - cotton, cotton blends, flannel and fleece • Yarn • Crochet thread • Narrow ribbon
HOUSTON AREA PROJECT LINUS
StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org.
If you have any of these items to donate or for information about Project Linus, please call Karen Hagin, Cinco Ranch resident and Project Linus blanketeer, at 281-693-7150 or Sally Burns, Houston Area Project Linus
The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

ADOPT A US SOLDIER
Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
