NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

Since we have been rained out three of the last four years around the Fourth of July for a cookout, the Board has decided to celebrate National Night Out with a supper cookout, if all the logistics can be worked out. The date is Tuesday, October 1st. Watch the newsletter for updates. National Night Out is a police/ community awareness raising event held throughout Houston and the country.

YARD MAINTENANCE

Summer is here, it’s time to look after our yards and landscaping. Treat for weed growth before it takes over the yard, cut and edge your yards as needed, since growth is beginning as temperatures climb. If you have low hanging branches, carefully trim them back. You don’t want to get poked in the eye by a low hanging branch. If your grass is thin or gone below you trees, consider having the tree limbs thinned out to let more sun through to the grass below the trees. Let’s keep our community looking as good as it did last year, thanks.

2013 MAINTENANCE ASSESSMENT

Homeowners received their 2013 Maintenance Assessments in the mail with the amount remaining the same at $550 per home. Payment was due by January 31, 2013. It is your responsibility to contact Crest Management if you do not receive your billing statement. Avoid late fees and interest by paying on time. Crest Management has changed banks thereby offering more payment options to homeowners such as free e-check and more credit cards are accepted. You can pay your assessments on-line at www.crest-management.com. If you want to pay early before the billing statements come out, please contact Crest Management for your account number as they have changed from last year. The accounting department can be reached directly at 281-9454620, where you can also set up a payment plan if necessary.

Please note that Sheffield garbage pickup is twice weekly, on Tuesday and Friday (heavy trash day). Please DO NOT put your trash out at the curb until the night before pickup (Monday and Thursday). Tree trimmings should be in three-foot lengths and tied together if possible. Items such as televisions and computer monitors should not be put in the trash, but instead taken to a recycling center or to a trash site that takes these items. Harris County has special trash events 1-2 times yearly. Contact the Precinct 3 office for more information. Carpet and padding are also items that the trash company will not take. Please have

Please remember that you are not allowed by law to let your dogs and cats run loose in the neighborhood. If caught, you may receive a ticket in the amount of up to $500 for such a violation (we have had residents receive such a ticket). If you see loose pets you can contact Harris County Animal Control. A number of Sheffield residents either walk their dogs or let their cats run loose. It is a violation of deed restrictions to let your pet leave their poop on another resident’s lawn or the common grounds (they belong to all of Sheffield’s residents). If your pet does have to go to the bathroom, please be courteous and carry a plastic bag (store bags or the newspaper delivery bag are great for this), pick up the pile by placing your hand inside the bag, grab the pile through the bag, tie the bag up and throw it in the garbage. Leaving your pet waste around encourages the possible spread of pet disease, such as Parvo, which can be life threatening, or parasites. A number of complaints have been made about stray cats roaming the neighborhood. To report stray or unconfined animals call 281999-3191, Monday thru Friday during the hours of 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

10 FATIGUE FIGHTERS

When you’re feeling run-down and exhausted, try one of these methods for an energy - or attitude - boost. You know you haven’t run a marathon, climbed a mountain or even done much more than slog through a giant stack of paperwork - so why do you feel exhausted at the end of every day? That’s the tricky thing about stress, it can make you feel mentally and physically exhausted. If you’re so pooped you can’t socialize, enjoy hobbies or participate in activities that make you happy, it’s time to reassess. Find the fatigue fighter that leaves you feeling relaxed, refreshed and invigorated. 1. Exercise. It may seem counterintuitive - you’re so tired you can barely drag yourself home at the end of the day, so why would running a few miles help? The fact is exercise is one of the best ways to combat fatigue. More movement, not less, boosts energy levels. And you can exercise without leaving the comfort of your own home. Invest in some 8 or 10-pound weights and do some work on your arms while you’re watching TV or talking on the phone or buy an aerobic workout video and do 20 minutes in the morning for a before work cardio-boost. 2. Sleep. It sounds simple, but how often are you getting a good night’s sleep? If you actually keep a log of your sleep habits, you may find that your late-night puttering is robbing you of precious hours of shut-eye. Set a bedtime for yourself and stick to it. 3. Healthy diet. Stick to a healthy diet. While sugary snacks and caffeine-laden soft drinks may give you a short-term boost, they will quickly dump you into a low-energy slump. So what should you eat instead? Try dried apricots along with one ounce of almonds for a low-fat energy boost - this combo snack gives you up to 50% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A and 20% of your daily iron allowance. Raisins and yogurt or a fresh peach are some other nutrition-packed snacks that can help you boost your energy levels. 4. Cooling eye mask. Okay, you may feel a little silly, but who cares how you look? These eye masks typically contain a cold-retaining gel. Keep a few in the fridge and pop them on at the end of the day when your eyes are burning from computer glare or throbbing with tension. Look a little funny, feel fantastic. 5. Pounding beat. Put on some music that gets you going. Remember when you could dance until dawn and watch the sun rise? Those days may be long gone, but your old AC/DC album may give you

just enough energy to clean the kitchen. Or try an energizing yoga workout to rejuvenate your body and mind. 6. Astringent. Whether they contain herbal extracts, essential oils or pore-tightening alcohol, astringents are slightly tart face washes that are meant to be invigorating and refreshing. Choose your favorite and give it a try. At the very least, you’ll smell nice and have squeakyclean skin. 7. Just say no - to too many commitments, that is. Are you feeling exhausted because you’re trying to do too much? It may be time to say no every once in a while. And if the negative is super-hard for you to say, then practice with a qualified yes. As in, “Yes I can serve on the PTA committee, but I can’t do it this month. How about next month?” 8. Soak your fatigue away. Take a hot bath - the warm water loosens tight muscles and cuts stress, leaving you with more energy. A hot soak can erase the day’s tensions and leave you ready to face the rest of your evening with a little bit of pep. Plus, it will help you sleep better. 9. See a doctor. If your fatigue is persistent and you have other symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, sleeping too much or a loss of interest in your usual activities, you may want to talk to your doctor. Such symptoms can be a sign of depression. 10. Take a walk. Take a break at work or at home. Some fresh air can help clear your mind and fight that foggy feeling. Believe it or not, walking can help you fight off the blues. A recent Duke University Medical Center study found that a quick 10-minute walk may be enough to make clinically depressed people feel better. The study involved a group of inactive, depressed people who were 50 and older. After just eight minutes of walking, 82 percent of them said they felt less tense, tired and angry.

Back to School BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY

As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride.  • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas.   • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop.   • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO.  • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.”  • Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them.  • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults.  • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance.  • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized.  • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency.

HOW TO CHOOSE A BACKPACK FOR BACK TO SCHOOL

2. One size does not fit all. Ideally, the bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back and not be more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack’s shoulder-strap anchor points should also rest 1 to 2 inches below the top of the shoulders. 3. Comfort, convenience and safety are important. Features to look for include wide, padded, contoured shoulder straps that distribute the pack’s load over a large area of the shoulder, an abdominal strap, which can help distribute the pack’s weight evenly on the back, waist and hips and reflectors or reflective fabrics on the pack to add visibility when kids travel to and from school at dusk or dawn. 4. Prevent injury with a lighter load. To prevent discomfort and injury, load and wear the backpack correctly. The American Occupational Therapy Association recommends carrying no more than 15 percent of your body weight in a backpack. But the less you carry, the better for your back. Bullying is a big problem. It can make kids feel hurt, scared, sick, lonely, embarrassed and sad. Bullies might hit, kick, or push to hurt people, or use words to call names, threaten, tease, or scare them. A bully might say mean things about someone, grab a kid’s stuff, make fun of someone, or leave a kid out of the group on purpose. Some bullies threaten people or try to make them do things they don’t want to do. Bullying Is a Big Deal Bullying is a big problem that affects lots of kids. Three-quarters of all kids say they have been bullied or teased. Being bullied can make kids feel really bad. The stress of dealing with bullies can make kids feel sick. Bullying can make kids not want to play outside or go to school. It’s hard to keep your mind on schoolwork when you’re worried about how you’re going to deal with the bully near your locker. Bullying bothers everyone — and not just the kids who are getting picked on. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to more violence and more stress for everyone. Why Do Bullies Act That Way? Some bullies are looking for attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make themselves feel more important. When they pick on someone else, it can make them feel big and powerful. Some bullies come from families where everyone is angry and shouting all the time. They may think that being angry, calling names, and pushing people around is a normal way to act. Some bullies are copying what they’ve seen someone else do. Some have been bullied themselves.

Sometimes bullies know that what they are doing or saying hurts other people. But other bullies may not really know how hurtful their actions can be. Most bullies don’t understand or care about the feelings of others. Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. They might pick on kids who get upset easily or who have trouble sticking up for themselves. Getting a big reaction out of someone can make bullies feel like they have the power they want. Sometimes bullies pick on someone who is smarter than they are or different from them in some way. Sometimes bullies just pick on a kid for no reason at all. Gemma told her mom that this one kid was picking on her for having red hair and freckles. She wanted to be like the other kids but she couldn’t change those things about herself. Finally Gemma made friends at her local swimming pool with a girl who wished she had red hair like Gemma’s. The two girls became great friends and she learned to ignore the mean girl’s taunts at school. Bullying: How to Handle It Don’t give the bully a chance. As much as you can, avoid the bully. You can’t go into hiding or skip class, of course. But if you can take a different route and avoid him or her, do so. Stand tall and be brave. When you’re scared of another person, you’re probably not feeling your bravest. But sometimes just acting brave is enough to stop a bully. How does a brave person look and act? Stand tall and you’ll send the message: “Don’t mess with me.” It’s easier to feel brave when you feel good about yourself. See the next tip! Feel good about you. Nobody’s perfect, but what can you do to look and feel your best? Maybe you’d like to be more fit. If so, maybe you’ll decide to get more exercise, watch less TV, and eat healthier snacks. the way to school or recess or lunch or wherever you think you might meet the bully. Offer to do the same if a friend is having bully trouble. Get involved if you see bullying going on in your school — tell an adult, stick up for the kid being bullied, and tell the bully to stop. If The Bully Says or Does Something to You Ignore the bully. If you can, try your best to ignore the bully’s threats. Pretend you don’t hear them and walk away quickly to a place of safety. Bullies want a big reaction to their teasing and meanness. Acting as if you don’t notice and don’t care is like giving no reaction at all, and this just might stop a bully’s behavior. Stand up for yourself. Pretend to feel really brave and confident. Tell the bully “No! Stop it!” in a loud voice. Then walk away, or run if you have to. Kids also can stand up for each other by telling a bully to stop teasing or scaring someone else, and then walk away together. If a bully wants you to do something that you don’t want to do — say “no!” and walk away. If you do what a bully says to do, they will likely keep bullying you. Bullies tend to bully kids who don’t stick up for themselves. Don’t bully back. Don’t hit, kick, or push back to deal with someone bullying you or your friends. Fighting back just satisfies a bully and it’s dangerous, too, because someone could get hurt. You’re also likely to get in trouble. It’s best to stay with others, stay safe, and get help from an adult. Don’t show your feelings. Plan ahead. How can you stop yourself from getting angry or showing you’re upset? Try distracting yourself (counting backwards from 100, spelling the word ‘turtle’ backwards, etc.) to keep your mind occupied until you are out of the situation and somewhere safe where you can show your feelings. Tell an adult. If you are being bullied, it’s very important to tell an adult. Find someone you trust and go and tell them what is happening to you. Teachers, principals, parents, and lunchroom helpers at school can all help to stop bullying. Sometimes bullies stop as soon as a teacher finds out because they’re afraid that they will be punished by parents. This is not tattling on someone who has done something small — bullying is wrong and it helps if everyone who gets bullied or

sees someone being bullied speaks up. What Happens to Bullies? In the end, most bullies wind up in trouble. If they keep acting mean and hurtful, sooner or later they may have only a few friends left — usually other kids who are just like them. The power they wanted slips away fast. Other kids move on and leave bullies behind. Luis lived in fear of Brian — every day he would give his lunch money to Brian but he still beat him up. He said that if Luis ever told anyone he would beat him up in front of all the other kids in his class. Luis even cried one day and another girl told everyone that he was a baby and had been crying. Luis was embarrassed and felt so bad about himself and about school. Finally, Brian got caught threatening Luis and they were both sent to the school counselor. Brian got in a lot of trouble at home. Over time, Brian learned how to make friends and ask his parents for lunch money. Luis never wanted to be friends with Brian but he did learn to act strong and more confident around him. Some kids who bully blame others. But every kid has a choice about how to act. Some kids who bully realize that they don’t get the respect they want by threatening others. They may have thought that bullying would make them popular, but they soon find out that other kids just think of them as trouble-making losers. The good news is that kids who are bullies can learn to change their behavior. Teachers, counselors, and parents can help. So can watching kids who treat others fairly and with respect. Bullies can change if they learn to use their power in positive ways. In the end, whether bullies decide to change their ways is up to them. Some bullies turn into great kids. Some bullies never learn. But no one needs to put up with a bully’s behavior. If you or someone you know is bothered by a bully, talk to someone you trust. Everyone has the right to feel safe, and being bullied makes people feel unsafe. Tell someone about it and keep telling until something is done. SIX STEPS TO SMARTER STUDYING

How did you learn how to ride your bike? Someone probably gave you a few lessons and then you practiced a lot. You can learn how to study in much the same way. No one is born knowing how to study. You need to learn a few study skills and then practice them. Why work on your study skills? It will make it easier for you to learn and do well in class, especially as you move up to middle school and high school. Here are six steps to smarter studying: Pay attention in class. Take good notes. Plan ahead for tests and projects. Break it down. (If you have a bunch of stuff to learn, break it into smaller chunks.) Ask for help if you get stuck. Get a good night’s sleep! 1. Pay Attention: Good Studying Starts in Class Here’s a riddle for you: Did you know that before you even begin studying, you’ve already started? Huh? Here’s what we mean. When you pay attention in class and take good notes, you are starting the process of learning and studying. Do you have trouble paying attention in class? Are you sitting next to a loud person? Is it hard to see the board? Make sure you’re sitting in a good seat that lets you pay attention. Tell your teacher or parents about any problems that are preventing you from paying attention and taking good notes.

2. Good Notes = Easier Studying Not sure how to take notes? Start by writing down facts that your teacher mentions or writes on the board during class. Try your best to use good handwriting so you can read your notes later. It’s also a good idea to keep your notes, quizzes, and papers organized by subject. 3. Plan Ahead and You’ll Be Glad You Did Waiting until Thursday night to study for Friday’s test will make for a homework night that’s no fun! It also makes it hard to do your best. We’re all guilty of putting things off sometimes. One of the best ways to make sure that doesn’t happen is to plan ahead. Ask for a cool calendar (something you like and can keep by your desk or study area) and write down your test and assignment due dates. You can then plan how much to do after school each day, and how much time to spend on each topic. Are lessons or extracurricular activities making it hard to find time to study? Ask your mom or dad how to make a schedule of what to do when. 4. Break It Up! When there’s a lot to study, it can help to break things into chunks. Let’s say you have a test on 20 spelling words. Instead of thinking about all of the words at once, try breaking them down into five-word chunks and working on one or two different chunks each night. Don’t worry if you can’t remember something on the first try. That’s where practice comes in. The more days you spend reviewing something, the more likely it is to stick in your brain. There are also tricks called mnemonic (say: new-mah-nik) devices that can help you remember stuff. When you’re trying to memorize a list of things, make up a phrase that uses the first letter of each. For example, are you trying to learn the eight planets and their order from the sun? Think: My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nachos to remember Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Your teacher can give you ideas, too.

Another way to break it up is to study regularly instead of just the night before. You can always review your notes and read over the chapters you’re working on. Or, if you’re studying math or science, do some practice problems. How much studying should you do each night? Your teacher can help you figure it out. Most brains can only pay attention for about 45 minutes. So if you’ve been working for a while and find it hard to pay attention, try taking a break for some water or a walk around the house. Just fight the temptation to turn on the TV or stop working! 5. Lose the Confusion — Ask for Help You can’t study effectively if you don’t understand the material. Be sure to ask your teacher for help if you’re confused about something. You can check yourself by reading through your notes. Does it all make sense? If not, ask your teacher to go over it with you. If you’re at home when the confusion occurs, your mom or dad might be able to help. 6. Sleep Tight! So the test is tomorrow and you’ve followed your study plan — but suddenly you can’t remember anything, not even 2+2! Don’t panic. Your brain needs time to digest all the information you’ve given it. Try to get a good night’s sleep and you’ll be surprised by what comes back to you in the morning.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY  AUGUST 9 - 11, 2013

The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of the this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9th - 11th, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained at www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/ taxpubs/taxholiday/d/, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.

Six months ago the Taylor familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world was turned upside down with the sudden loss of Terry Taylor. Leaving behind a wife, two children and a nearly one-year-old grandson, Terry was killed while helping a police officer in the parking lot of the Bellaire-area Maaco Collision Repair he owned for 21 years... on Christmas Eve. Â Terryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s selfless act will be honored by a $50,000 endowment that will give a $5,000 scholarship in perpetuity to a Cy-Fair ISD student who wishes to pursue a criminal justice degree. Board members of the 100 Club, a non-profit organization that gives financial aid to families of those in law enforcement and fire fighters who are killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty, voted unanimously to make this gift to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Terry was a citizen who went above and beyondÂ the call of duty to help an officer in need,â&#x20AC;? said Rick Hartley, Executive Director of the 100 Club. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a small way we can say thank you to Terryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family.â&#x20AC;? The Taylor family moved to the Cy-Fair community in the 1970s from Kentucky. “My mom still lives in the same house I grew up in,” said Kevin. Terry was a quiet man who worked hard but also enjoyed camping and fishing. “He was an old-school military guy who always helped someone when they needed it,” said Kevin. “He never drank alcohol or smoked a day in his life and loved walking every night with his dogs,” said Kevin. On Christmas Eve morning, with his wife Judy by his side and plans to close up early to celebrate the holiday, Terry saw an officer having trouble apprehending a criminal after a car chase ended in the parking lot of his shop. Both Bellaire Police Department Sergeant Jimmie Norman and Terry Taylor were allegedly shot and killed by the criminal who is awaiting trial for the murders. Kevin’s son turned one on the day of Terry’s funeral. “My son will never get to know his grandfather. My father didn’t get a chance to know his only grandson,” said Kevin. “We are trying to make sense of what happened and why. We know that bad things happen to good people and that we are living God’s plan so there is a reason, a purpose... I feel like this scholarship is one positive thing that will come out of this,” he said.

Bus Buddies is a partnership between the Cy-Fair community and Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District to provide assistance to elementary students helping them get off the bus at the correct location. The program requires one “Bus Buddy” per elementary bus the first three days of school. The approximate time commitment is from 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM on August 26th, 27th and 28th. You may choose to volunteer one, two or all three days. Your job is to simply assist the bus driver with making sure the children get off the bus at their correct stops.

KIDS’ CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM’S SEASON STARTS SEPTEMBER 10TH

The Northwest Flyers Track Club Youth Cross-Country Team kicks off the fall season with registration and an orientation for parents and athletes on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 6:00 PM (location to be announced). The first practice will be held at the Cypress Creek YMCA on Thursday, September 12, 2013. The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a member program of USA Track and Field (USATF), the national governing body for track and cross country. The club is in its 26th year in the northwest Houston area. Ages 6 - 18 may participate in the team and both beginners and experienced runners are welcome. Our next evaluations will be Tuesday and Thursday, September 4th and 6th from 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM. On Saturday, September 8th between the hours of 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Cost is $75. Our practices will begin the week of September 23rd. Our first games will be October 5th and go through November 16th. MEN’S OUTWARD FLAG FOOTBALL: Come join men 18 yrs and older for our men’s Outward Flag Football league coming this fall. Practice/Games will be on Saturday afternoons around 2:00 PM. The league will have a tournament at the conclusion of the season. Evaluations for all players will be Tuesday and Thursday, September 10th and 12th from 6:00-7:00 PM and Saturday, September 14th from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. These will take place on the fields behind the church. Cost for the league will be $35 per player covering cost of officials and jersey. First games will be October 12th and season concludes on November 9th with tournament. Due to the administrative changes in San Jacinto Council, we have moved away from our service unit structure. The Copper Creek Meadows community has been created by merging the former Bear Creek, Copper Corners and Blue Bonnet Meadows service units. A team drawn from members of each of the three service units has been at work for several months during this transition process to create the structure for our new community. Membership is drawn from fourteen elementary schools and the corresponding middle and high schools. The elementary schools served are: Lieder, Metcalf, Wilson, Tipps and Texas Christian School; Birkes, Fiest and Lowery; Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. Boy Scouts BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome.

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

We also need adult (over 18) leaders for our troops. We can’t form new troops without new leaders! You need a background check and a little training to get started, but lots more training is available. Our leaders are of all ages, both sexes and a wide range of interests.

Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which

An Eagle Scout service project is the opportunity for a Boy Scout to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of any religious institution, school or community. This is the culmination of the Eagle Scout candidate’s leadership training and it requires a significant effort on his part. The Scout must develop a project plan, coordinate fundraising to provide the necessary materials, schedule the work organize the personnel needed and give leadership to others in order to direct the project to its completion. Jacob, 15, is a Boy Scout with Troop 1283 based out of St. Elizabeth Ann-Seton Church in Houston. He has worked his way through the ranks from a young Cub Scout to the final rank in Boy Scouts, going above and beyond the requirements and, is now awaiting his Eagle board-of-review to become an Eagle Scout (the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve). The summer has started off as an action-packed and adventurous time for the organization. At our Bridging Ceremony on June 2nd, we promoted Tiger Cubs to Wolves, Wolves to Bears and Bears to Webelos and wrapped up an extremely successful year for Pack 1445. Next, we had 12 Scouts attend the District Day Camp, earning numerous achievements towards their new rank and learning a variety of new skills. The Scouts had a great time with activities like Archery and BB gun shooting; Soccer and Ultimate Frisbee and working on craftsman activities including building a TV tray table. On the 4th of July, several of our Scouts participated in the Southdown parade and one of our leaders carried the flag through the parade. The boys had a terrific time. If you are interested in joining Pack 1445, please keep an eye out for our Fall Rally night coming to Lowery Cafeteria in September. We look forward to seeing you there!

‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.”

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK

During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays

involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. I t also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Residents of Harris County must be aware of the regulations adopted by Commissioners Court to meet the standards of the “Texas Rabies Control Act of 1981.” This ordinance, enforced by Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) is designed to protect the health and welfare of Harris County residents. • Requires the annual vaccination and registration of all dogs and cats four months of age and older. Vaccinated within the last twelve months, or; Vaccinated within the last 36 months provided that the animal was vaccinated twice within 12 months and the last vaccination was with a licensed 3-year vaccine. • Requires dogs and cats to be physically restrained at all times, without access to the sidewalks and streets. • Sets a REGISTRATION FEE for all dogs and cats: Updated 8/2011 $15 LIFETIME: for neutered dogs and cats. Proof of neutering required. $15 LIFETIME; for dogs and cats belonging to persons 65 years of age or older. •NOTE: All pets with lifetime registration must be vaccinated yearly against rabies. $75 TRIENNIAL LICENSE: for dogs and cats with qualifying vaccination status. Must provide proof of two rabies vaccinations within 12 months and the last vaccination must be with an licensed 3-year vaccine $25 ANNUAL: fee for all other dogs and cats. $5 REPLACEMENT fee for Harris County tag. Sets an IMPOUNDMENT FEE plus a boarding fee to be charged for each animal picked up. Owner may also be issued a citation for allowing the animal to run loose. OTHER • Impounded animals shall be kept three days to allow the owner time to redeem them. • The occupant/head of household of any premises on which a dog or cat remains for a period of seven days is presumed to be the owner of that animal. • All animals suspected of rabies, or animals that bite, scratch or otherwise attack any person shall be impounded at the discretion of the County Health Officer, for a period of ten days under veterinary observation. • Violators of any provision of this order are guilty of a misdemeanor and are subject to a fine of up to $200 in a Justice of the Peace Court.
