TWO FAMILIES RECEIVE KEYS TO NEW HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME Thrivent Financial and area churches support affordable home construction Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County (Habitat NWHC) celebrates the construction of two more Habitat NWHC homes at a dedication ceremony on July 20, 2013 at 8:30 AM at Hamill Crossing, a completely designed and built Habitat NWHC neighborhood. The new homeowners, Katherine Garrett and Martha Turcios will thank all those who worked so hard to help them reach this goal and there will be an open house of the newly completed homes directly following. Each Habitat for Humanity homeowner puts in what we call ‘Sweat Equity’ by working on the construction site to build their home alongside local volunteers. Ms. Garrett and Ms. Turcios were no exception and both put in well over the minimum of 350 Sweat Equity hours required by the program. They will both be closing on their homes the week following the dedication ceremony. Ms. Garrett’s home is unique because it was sponsored and built by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and area Lutheran churches. Sponsorship is the process by which a church,

company or organization gives a financial donation that Habitat then uses to purchase the materials to build the house. This generosity helps increase Habitat’s ability to build more homes in its ongoing effort to eliminate substandard housing here in Northwest Harris County. Ms. Turcios is unique because upon closing on her home, she will be the oldest homeowner that Habitat NWHC has ever had. At 74 years of age Ms. Turcios has never owned her own home or even had her own bedroom. Ms. Turcios’ home was also sponsored and built by area churches. Ms. Turcios and Ms. Garrett worked hard and formed a warm relationship with the volunteers that helped build their homes and the end result is two beautiful homes that their families can enjoy for many years to come. Through donations of money, materials and volunteer labor, Habitat NWHC was able to build the homes and sell them at an affordable price. Ms. Garrett and Ms. Turcios will purchase their homes with a no-profit loan and their monthly mortgage payments will be used to build more Habitat houses. “It has been exciting to get to know these two neighbors during the construction of their homes and the completion of the Habitat program. I was talking to Katherine [Garrett] just the other day about how amazing it is that all these people that didn’t even know her before came out and worked so hard so that she and her family could have a decent place to live. It truly is an amazing and awe inspiring process.” - Karly Grilliot, Habitat NWHC Development Manager If your company, church or organization is interested in partnering with Habitat NWHC please contact Karly Grilliot at kgrilliot@habitatnwhc.org or at 281-477-0460. GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST • Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage.• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY
AUGUST 9 - 11, 2013 The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of the this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9th - 11th, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained at www.window.state.tx.us/ taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d/, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.

HAPPY BACK TO SCHOOL! GET MOTIVATED!

NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas.

It’s that TIME! Back to school! Kiddos are NOT going to be excited, but most parents will be! How can you get your kiddo ready for another school year? Here are some tips: • Start getting into the school schedule mode in early August. Begin readjusting bed time, homework time and other regular school schedules. • Begin school shopping early. Have your child enjoy the experience and be positive! • Read as a family so kiddos will get into the reading mode. Kids lose their ability to learn most during the summer months. Refresh their skills! • Start winding down the family gatherings, get-togethers and activities and focus on the family. • Lead by example.

• It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips:

• Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO.
 • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.”
 • Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them.
 • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults.

• Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS when walking or biking and stay with a group while stand- from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in ing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride.
 each instance.
 • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should

• Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. A team drawn from members of each of the three service units has been at work for several months during this transition process to create the structure for our new community. Membership is drawn from fourteen elementary schools and the corresponding middle and high schools. The elementary schools served are: Lieder, Metcalf, Wilson, Tipps and Texas Christian School; Birkes, Fiest and Lowery; Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. The plan is that more people and more resources mean more activities and more fun for all of us! You can read more about these changes in the Golden Link or on the Council website, www.gssjc.org. An open planning meeting was held on July 14th. Rally Days (when we recruit new members and leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled after schools are back in session. Look for more information soon!

Stone Gate August 2013

We also need adult (over 18) leaders for our troops. We can’t form new troops without new leaders! You need a background check and a little training to get started, but lots more training is available. Our leaders are of all ages, both sexes and a wide range of interests. You do not need to be Ranger Rick or Martha Stewart (though you may find yourself developing unexpected talents). Don’t feel that you could make the commitment to be a troop leader? Do you have a special skill that you would be willing to share or a willingness to help on a limited basis? Please give us a call - we’d like to talk to you! A special event may need YOUR particular talent or skill! Please contact Dianne Massie (dianne.massie@att.net) or call 281-550-9148. The council website is www.gssjc.org.

BOY SCOUTS BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

BOY SCOUT GIVES BACK TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND HIS COMMUNITY Thanks to the efforts of Boy Scout, Jacob Sealey, his Eagle Scout service project has provided new wood duck boxes for the wildlife of Lakes on Eldridge. Wood duck boxes provide safe shelter and a place to raise young for the various small waterfowl that reside in the area. These boxes were installed in and around the vegetation on some of the smaller ponds. An Eagle Scout service project is the opportunity for a Boy Scout to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of any religious institution, school or community. This is the culmination of the Eagle Scout candidate’s leadership training and it requires a significant effort on his part. The Scout must develop a project plan, coordinate fundraising to provide the necessary materials, schedule the work organize the personnel needed and give leadership to others in order to direct the project to its completion. Jacob, 15, is a Boy Scout with Troop 1283 based out of St. Elizabeth Ann-Seton Church in Houston. He has worked his way through the ranks from a young Cub Scout to the final rank in Boy Scouts, going above and beyond the requirements

During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.

The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family.

With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.

here is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.

Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.

EXCHANGE STUDENTS FROM AMERICAN COUNCILS

Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

THEATER/ARTS MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

Foxfinder by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre.

Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Museum of Dysfunction IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. Rome by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www. mildredsumbrella.com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

‘BEGINNING WITH BEETHOVEN’ TAKES HOLD OF HOUSTON

‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), August 17th, Saturday at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February.

CHURCH NEWS COPPERFIELD CHURCH HOSTS NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR...DON PIPER Copperfield Church is pleased to announce bestselling author and speaker, Don Piper, as its special guest on Thursday, August 22nd, at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 7:00 PM and admission to the event is FREE!! On the way home from a church conference in 1989, Don Piper’s Ford Escort was struck head-on by an 18-wheeler, He was killed instantly - pronounced dead by four sets of paramedics. But God worked a miracle and sent Don back to a broken body. To date, 34 surgical procedures have taken place. He walks only as a result of miraculous and in some cases medically unexplainable circumstances. During the time he was dead, Piper was granted the extreme privilege of glimpsing Heaven itself. Ninety minutes after dying, Don Piper came back to life where he faced a long and grueling recovery. Don travels across the country and around the world sharing his amazing story of hope and healing. His message is simple... We can have a better life now and an eternal life someday through faith in Jesus Christ! Don has appeared and shared his miraculous story in numerous nationalmedia outlets, including Fox News, CBN, “The Today Show” on NBC and Newsweek. Copperfield Church is located at 8350 Hwy. 6 North, Houston, TX 77095, 281-856-2273. At the event, representatives from Mission Centers of Houston will also share a report on the life-changing ministry being conducted in the underserved communities in inner-city Houston, Attendees will be given an opportunity to partner with this ministry.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH

Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 - Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. Wednesday - 8 months, 20 lbs. Very sweet/outgoing. Good with dogs, kids, cats unknown. Med-high activity level. You may have heard of the area of town called “The Corridor.” Unwanted dogs are left there to fend for themselves. Well, somebody let me out there and drove away when my back was turned. Boy, was I scared! I had never been on my own and was not sure what to do. Thankfully, some kind people came along and offered me food, water and then invited me into the warm car. Whew! Major relief! I am cute, fun, with some puppy months left in me and with no hard feelings. I love to run, play and would really enjoy some kids of my own to throw a ball or take me out for a stroll in the neighborhood.

Six months ago the Taylor family’s world was turned upside down with the sudden loss of Terry Taylor. Leaving behind a wife, two children and a nearly one-year-old grandson, Terry was killed while helping a police officer in the parking lot of the Bellaire-area Maaco Collision Repair he owned for 21 years... on Christmas Eve. Terry’s selfless act will be honored by a $50,000 endowment that will give a $5,000 scholarship in perpetuity to a Cy-Fair ISD student who wishes to pursue a criminal justice degree. Board members of the 100 Club, a non-profit organization that gives financial aid to families of those in law enforcement and fire fighters who are killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty, voted unanimously to make this gift to the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. “Terry was a citizen who went above and beyond the call of duty to help an officer in need,” said Rick Hartley, Executive Director of the 100 Club. “It is a small way we can say thank you to Terry’s family.” The Taylor family was first offered financial assistance by the 100 Club but Kevin, Terry’s son who owns another Maaco Collision Repair in the Cy-Fair area, didn’t feel right about accepting the offer. “We wanted to give back to the community instead.” A 27-year military officer veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Terry Taylor was honored in February by the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation at the annual Salute to Heroes event. Impressed by positive impact the organization is making in the lives of community students, Kevin had already started to visit with the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation about making a contribution for someone in need when he was approached by the 100 Club with their generous gift. “My dad believed strongly in the importance of a solid education. My sister is an engineer in St. Louis and my father and I both earned master degrees,” said Kevin. “We feel like it’s so important to help someone attend school who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.” The Taylor family moved to the Cy-Fair community in the 1970s from Kentucky. “My mom still lives in the same house I grew up in,” said Kevin. Terry was a quiet man who worked hard but also enjoyed camping and fishing. “He was an old-school military guy who always helped someone when they needed it,” said Kevin. “He never drank alcohol or smoked a day in his life and loved walking every night with his dogs,” said Kevin. On Christmas Eve morning, with his wife Judy by his side and plans to close up early to celebrate the holiday, Terry saw an officer having trouble apprehending a criminal after a car chase ended in the parking lot of his shop. PM on August 26th, 27th and 28th. You may choose to volunteer one, two or all three days. Your job is to simply assist the bus driver with making sure the children get off the bus at their correct stops. What is Required? (1) Attend one of the training sessions, if not previously trained. (2) Arrive and sign in at your assigned school where campus staff will assist you. (3) Enjoy helping the kids and driver! When and Where is the 1 Hour Training? Training is held at our Berry Center located at 8877 Barker Cypress Rd., Cypress, TX. August 19th - 9:30 AM -10:30 AM August 20th - 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM (evening session) August 21st - 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM The Partners in Education (PIE) department is looking for the same strong Bus Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the Cy-Fair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. We do encourage all Bus Buddy volunteers to wear a shirt indicating the business or organization they are representing so that our employees, parents and the community will be aware of your organization’s support of CFISD. Volunteers wear many hats! We are askingYOU to wear the very important “Bus Buddy Hat” and support our number one priority goal - the safety and security of our students! Please, register for a training session and choose your school by visiting www.cfisd.net and selecting “Bus Buddies.” For additional information about the program, please contact the CFISD Partners in Education Department at 281-894-3949.

CY-FAIR ISD CELEBRATES VOLUNTEERS, COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS PARTNERS

The importance of recognizing volunteer contributions and the support of our business and community partners is essential to a strong volunteer and partners program. The administration, students and staff of CFISD enjoyed hosting and entertaining over a thousand of the tens of thousands of volunteers and supporters that have given so much to help us achieve our goals this year. With the commitment and generosity of several community businesses, tickets to this appreciation event were free. PBK Architects continues to serve as the underwriter for the VIPS Appreciation Luncheon. Additionally, the event was sponsored by: Allsafe Storage, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation, Cy-Hope, GameTime by Total Recreation Products, H-E-B, Kroger, Lone Star College Cy-Fair, Spring Creek Barbeque, Towne Lake and Rock Creek. As a district, we are so fortunate to have thousands of volunteers who actively give their time to our kids and many business and community partners who adopt and support our schools. As Superintendent, Dr. Mark Henry, says, “each volunteer plays a very key role in the lives our students and staff and it has not gone unnoticed. In these past years, with a struggling economy and the district dealing with huge budget cuts, you have kept us on top by being generous with your time and sharing your many talents to make our district the great success that it is.”
