IT IS ILLEGAL TO DUMP IN TEXAS
Texas Health and Safety Code Section 365.012 and Texas Water Code Section 7 states it is a criminal offense to illegally to dump waste in Texas. Depending upon the offense the person(s) can face penalties up to $100,000 and or up to 5 years in the state jail. Too many homeowners and lawn crews aren’t aware of the difference between storm drains and sewers. Sewers carry sewage “black water” that comes from toilets and other household drains. It is sent, via underground pipes, to treatment plants. Typically, we don’t see these pipes or openings. Storm drains lead to a separate pipe system. Openings are visible from the street. They are designed to route rain runoff into large pipes that lead directly to major ditches, bayous and other waterways, which ultimately empty into Galveston Bay. There’s no treatment or filtering of this water between your yard and the bay. It is your responsibility to make sure that nothing but untainted rainwater flows from your yard into storm drains. Lawn clippings, leaves and other debris often clump, contributing to flooding in your neighborhood. And that’s only the beginning. If you’ve used chemicals on your lawn or garden, they may contaminate the water that runs off from rains or your sprinkler system. Even nontreated lawn clippings do harm. When they decompose, they release carbon and nitrogen that feeds undesirable algae, which, in turn, use up oxygen in the water, contributing to fish kills.

10 Minutes from the Energy Corridor
16100 Cairnway, Suite 285 This is not just a matter of civic concern or responsibility. It’s the law: “Sweeping grass, leaves, grass clippings, yard waste, etc., into a storm drain is cited as a civil solid-waste violation of State Municipal Solid Waste rules, Chapter 330.15 (a)(1). Civil penalties are $50 to $25,000 per day per violation. Criminal penalties, if pursued, are $500 to $100,000 per day per violation.” The best option, ecologically speaking, is to re-mow several times so the clippings will sink down into the lawn and break down quickly, providing valuable fertilizer. Alternatively, bag lawn clippings, allow them to compost and then spread them on the lawn. Don’t put these bags out for the trash. This contributes to landfill problems. The pipelines that go through our subdivision is also not an approved solid waste site. If you send your clippings and other yard wastes off with your yardmen, please impress on them the importance of not flushing them down the drain or dumping them in an unapproved waste site. If you are someone that has dumped your yard waste onto the pipelines we will give you 30 days to remove this before we report you to the proper authorities. If you see someone illegally dumping down the storm drains report it to the Harris County MUD #284 at 281-240-1988. If you see someone illegally dumping on the pipelines or anywhere else report it to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at 713-221-6000.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 9 - 11, 2013
The recent passage of Senate Bill 485 (83rd Regular Legislative Session, 2013) changes the dates of the this year’s annual Sales Tax Holiday to August 9th - 11th, a week earlier than previously scheduled. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained at www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/ taxpubs/taxholiday/d/, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. The dates for the sales tax holiday are set by the Legislature.

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella.com - info@ mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.
‘BEGINNING WITH BEETHOVEN’ TAKES HOLD OF HOUSTON
‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.”

‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), August 17th, Saturday at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February. DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
