CINCO RANCH LOST AND FOUND PETS NETWORKING VOLUNTEERS & SHORT-TERM FOSTERS NEEDED

With over 8,700 homes in Cinco Ranch, we need volunteers from each “neighborhood” to receive email blasts for lost and found pets in our community. Would you be willing to receive occasional emails when there is a lost or found pet in your area? We need additional caring, animalfriendly neighbors to help us network to get them back home quickly. If you would like to help reunite lost and found pets with their grateful families, please send your name and contact information to our volunteer coordinator at paigeh618@hotmail.com. **Also, please get a registered microchip implant for your pets through your vet and make sure they have on collars and tags with contact information to quickly get them back home safely. If you find a lost pet, always contact us FIRST by email at: LostAndFound@CincoRanchLife.org, so we can help with securing a place for a short term foster until the owner is located or they are placed into rescue.

PARKING IN THE STREET

Did you know it is against Cinco Ranch Covenants for residents to park in the street (Article XII, Section 2(a))? Additionally, when a number of vehicles park in the street, emergency vehicles have a difficult task maneuvering down the street. Due to the size and clearance needs of these emergency vehicles, a street lined with parked cars obstructs the passage and delays response time. While it is understood that during certain events, vehicles parking on the street is an unavoidable circumstance, please be aware of clearance needed for traffic. Ask your guests to park their car as close to curb as possible and not line both sides of the street. Be a courteous neighbor by communicating you are having a gathering at your home and may need additional parking. Ask if they would mind guests parking in front of their homes to help eliminate the congestion on the street. Remember, parking on the street for residents is prohibited and can impact the ability of emergency services to reach you or a neighbor in an emergency. Your cooperation will ensure Cinco Ranch retains its reputation as the premiere area to live in.

most have an NRC rep and many have 1st and 2nd alternate reps. These are volunteers from your neighborhood. Your NRC rep is a tremendous source of information and a resource you should use. But, you have to know who your rep is, in order to contact him/her. A quick call to the Cinco Property Association Office at 281-599-0408 is all it takes to find out the name and contact information for your rep. All the NRC reps are trying to build contact lists to keep you informed, but they need you to reach out and let them know you want to be added to their contact list. Many NRC reps have started Facebook pages to help keep their neighbors informed. There are many issues facing Cinco Ranch that you should be aware of. Knowing who your NRC rep is, is one way to stay in the know. So call today and find out who your NRC rep is and contact them to let them know you want to be added to their listing.

HELP KEEP OUR LIGHTS ON

Cinco Ranch Residents pay a maintenance fee where a large portion includes the electricity to light our streets. Each streetlight costs the Cinco Ranch Associations approximately $30 dollars a month. This fee is billed to us whether the light is working or not. If you see a light(s) burned out, please help us by getting the number on the pole. You may submit the work order to Centerpoint Energy or report it to the Associations Office. To report the outage yourself you will either fill out the form available at: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage or you can call the information into Centerpoint Energy at 713-207-2222. The electronic form is much faster as you won’t be put on “hold.” You can also report dim lights, leaning poles, etc. on the electronic form. Copy the email to the Cinco Ranch Residential Office at: CincoRanchCustomerCare@pcmi-us.com so we can keep the list of lights reported. Thank you for your help in this matter. PET LEASH LAWS IN THE CINCO RANCH AREA HARRIS COUNTY - LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

FT. BEND COUNTY - LEASH LAW

Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Fort Bend County Animal Control - 1210 Blume Road - Rosenberg, TX 77471 - 281-342-1512 - AnimalServices@co.fort-bend.tx.us.

Do you have a transformer in your yard? If you do, please do not directly surround it with mulch or dirt. Transformers must have the sides exposed so they can cool properly. Otherwise they will over heat and burn out. Also, the sides of a transformer can rust through due to mulch holding moisture against them. Please do your part and clear the area around transformers in your yard.

DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!

Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake. Thank you for your consideration and attention. - Management

Two phone numbers suggested you save in your cell phone are the nonemergency Harris County Precinct 5 Constables and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s numbers. 911 should always be used in case of an emergency, but many times we need to contact the Sheriff’s Department and need to do so quickly. Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff’s Department if something in your neighborhood seems questionable. This will give our contract deputies probable cause to investigate. This would include suspicious vehicles (vehicles exhibiting unsafe or erratic driving behavior), suspicious persons or behavior, activity at you neighbors home when you know they are on vacation and anything else that may be out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. It’s been a long, hard winter for your yard. While your plants go dormant to cope with the colder weather, your sprinkler system can feel the effects of winter, too. Cracks in the pipes can lead to costly leaks and broken sprinkler heads can waste water and money. You could be losing up to 25,000 gallons of water and more than $90 over a six-month irrigation season - the cost of about 300 daffodil bulbs! Now is the perfect time to spruce up your irrigation system before you ramp up your watering efforts this spring and summer. To get started, follow these four simple steps - inspect, connect, direct and select: • Inspect. Check your system for clogged, broken or missing sprinkler heads. If you’re not the do-it-yourself type, go with a pro - look for an irrigation professional certified through a WaterSense labeled irrigation program. • Connect. Examine points where the sprinkler heads connect to pipes/ hoses. If water is pooling in your landscape or you have large wet areas, you could have a leak in your system. A leak as small as the tip of a ballpoint pen (1/32nd of an inch) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month.

• Direct. Are you watering the driveway, house or sidewalk instead of your yard? Redirect sprinklers to apply water only to your lawn or prized plants. • Select. An improperly scheduled irrigation controller can waste a lot of water and money. Update your system’s schedule with the seasons or select a WaterSense labeled controller to take the guesswork out of scheduling. Don’t forget to add “sprinkler spruce-up” to your spring cleaning list this year. Learn more about maintaining a water-smart yard by visiting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense website at www.epa.gov/ watersense/outdoor See www.cincomud8.com/documents.html for REBATE information.

HOT WEATHER TIPS FOR PETS

Dogs and cats are much more susceptible than humans to hot weather related conditions such as dehydration and heat stroke. They have sweat glands only on their paws and mostly pant to cool themselves. Pets with “pushed-in” faces, like pugs, are especially prone to heat stroke as they cannot cool themselves as efficiently by panting. HEAT STROKE CAN BE FATAL. Dogs and cats can also suffer from sunburn. Fortunately, most of these problems can be easily prevented. Unfortunately, many pet guardians - even those who obviously cherish their four-legged family members - are unaware of these simple preventive measures. I’ve heard of a couple of fairly recent incidents in our area where dogs collapsed and died of heat stroke after being taken out for runs by their well-intentioned guardians. Here are some important hot weather safety tips: • Exercise your pet during the cooler parts of the day and never after a meal. Always carry cold water for your pet and allow him to drink periodically - he might be feeling overheated, thirsty and fatigued even if you’re not. Allowing your pet to drink from a pool of standing water is not safe - it may be loaded with bacteria, virus particles and organisms like Giardia. Easily portable pet water dishes are widely available. Soaking your dog’s coat with cool (not cold) water before exercising may help, especially if she’s long-haired. • NEVER leave your pet alone in a vehicle. Even with a moderate outdoor temperature and open windows, the vehicle can quickly become a furnace. A pet can die within minutes. • Make sure your pet is well-conditioned for a particular activity. Be especially sensitive to overweight and old pets. Remember that our pets age much more rapidly than we do. • Never leave your pet standing on hot asphalt. It may burn his paws. • For pets kept in the backyard or in a cat or dog “run,” provide plenty of water and shade. Bring your pet indoors during the hottest part of the day (which is most of the day during our summers)! Never leave your pet on a leash for prolonged periods. • Don’t shave your dog’s hair down to the skin. This takes away sun protection and may cause sunburn. • Biking and rollerblading with dogs on-leash is too hard on them, particularly in hot weather. In fact, in some cities (including those in cooler climates), it is against the bylaws to cycle with a pet on-leash. We can go much further on wheels before we tire out compared to our pets on their feet. Dogs will often push themselves to the point of collapse (and even death) to keep up with us. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY and can occur quickly. Signs are excessive panting, hot skin and dark pink or reddish gums. If these are present, soak your pet in cool water and take her immediately to the nearest veterinarian. Remember, prevention is key. Amba Balu, MD

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive

systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

BOARD APPROVES CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR PROPOSED SECOND STADIUM

During its regular July meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the conceptual design for the proposed second stadium. The stadium project is one of three projects being considered for the District’s Student Activities Facilities referendum this fall. Members of the community, as well as Katy ISD end users and support staff attended a two-day design workshop held on June 26th - 27th and developed the conceptual design presented at the July 15th Board Work Study meeting. The second stadium would support student growth and success with additional athletic and fine arts support facilities at the secondary level within the District. PBK Architects were deemed best qualified for the stadium project, having successfully completed numerous stadium projects across the state, including multiple projects at the Rhodes stadium complex. Two other architectural firms have been selected for the STEM Center and Agricultural Sciences Center that are also components of the Student Activities Facility Proposal. For more information on the proposed second stadium, visit the Katy ISD website.

BOARD NAMES NEW AREA ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

During its regular July Board Meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees named David Kendler as the new Area 3 Assistant Superintendent. Kendler is currently the principal at Taylor High School. David Kendler began his educational career in 1986 as a high school basketball coach at West Mesa High School. His experience includes serving as principal at Paul Revere High School and Sharpstown High School in Houston ISD. He has been in his current role as principal of Taylor High School since 2007. Kendler holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and physical education from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in education administration from the University of New Mexico. He has received many honors throughout his career including Secondary Principal of the Year while in Houston ISD and the Texas Music Educators Distinguished Administrator Award.

t L ove ric A pr P QUe Im adble m or Ho Aff at

In May, Girl Scouts Anusri Shah, Rebecca Clark and Veronica Miko earned the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn, the Silver award. The trio of 7th graders accrued more than 60 hours supporting Katy’s Krause Center with various projects and events. They organized and led an Art Workshop for younger Girl Scouts, culminating in a large canvas to be displayed at the Krause Center. Using their creative energies, the Cadettes designed inspirational posters and assembled fleece pillows for the residents there. They also hosted a flip-flop decorating workshop at the Krause Center with more than 40 residents. Each of these girls is continuing on with Girl Scouting and plans to earn the highest honor, the Gold Award.

Want to help create a world with more birthdays and less cancer? The American Cancer Society is looking for passionate, committed volunteers to be a part of the 2014 Relay For Life of Katy planning committee! Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community support and underwriting, coordinate the cancer survivor dinner, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment activities, engage students at local schools and more. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track or park, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups and people from all walks of life - all aimed at celebrating the lives of those who have had cancer, remembering those lost and fighting back against the disease. If you would like to join the Relay For Life of Katy as a volunteer committee member, please plan to attend our informational meeting on Monday, September 23, 2013, at 6:30 PM, at the Cinco Ranch Library located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd. in Katy. If you are not able to attend, please express your interest to Erin Kasperek at the American Cancer Society by emailing her at erin.kasperek@cancer.org or calling 713-706-5652. Go to www.relayforlife. org/KatyTX for more information on the Relay For Life of Katy.

EF FOUNDATION FOR FOREIGN STUDY HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENTS

in just 10 weeks!

Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization has matched over 100,000 enthusiastic students from around the world with caring host families across the United States. EF Foundation is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Program Sponsor.

SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. Call 2815996590 for Your Complimentary Consultation or Packet! SEVEN STRATEGIES FOR SAVING

Submitted by: Cheryl Borbey Are you doing your best to save for your future? It can be very challenging to begin a savings program. After necessities such as food, clothing and housing, there can be little left to put aside for future goals. Unfortunately, failing to save could mean the difference between enjoying a comfortable retirement and giving up some basic needs. Often it is a matter of making the decision to begin saving now in order to buy a new home or car later. The goals you set are important to you. Making changes to prepare for those goals can make a difference. • Don’t splurge with your tax refund. Instead of spending your refund, use it wisely by paying down debt, funding an individual retirement account or saving it for future financial goals. • Take full advantage of your employer’s retirement contributions. Your employer may match a percentage of the contributions you make to your retirement savings plan. It’s a good idea to do what it takes to get the matching limit. It’s free money that can really help your bottom line during retirement. • Start small and stay steady. The first word is the most important - start. You should begin as early as possible to get the most out of your savings plan. • Pay yourself first. Think of your savings or investments as a bill you must pay on a regular basis, much the same as a car or mortgage payment. Be disciplined and make the payments according to a set schedule. For better results, establish an automatic monthly deduction from your paycheck or checking account to fund an investment or savings account. • Create separate pots of savings for upcoming life stages. Retirement may be an important goal for which to begin saving, but other goals or events need as much or more preparation. Don’t short-change other goals while concentrating on one thing. Whether it’s a home, car or child’s education, it is important to give appropriate attention to each. • If you have children, find the right education plan. You have a number of choices when it comes to saving for a child’s education. Finding the one that makes sense for your situation takes planning and information. This takes us to the seventh and, quite possibly, the most important point…

48

• Work with someone you know and trust. Everyone’s needs and goals are unique. Just as you go through many changes during your lifetime, your financial goals may change. You should work with a professional who not only know about various plans and strategies, but knows you and will stay with you through the long haul. Most people feel the best guidance they receive comes from a financial professional they know and trust. In the end, it all boils down to making a plan, getting started and saying the course. When you make the decision to finally start, contact a financial professional who knows you and understands your needs.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH

Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading.
