GRAND LAKES NEWS And so I begin yet another crazy activity - training for a half marathon. Family and friends must think all of these extreme sports are nutty, but who doesn’t like a challenge? The best way to see things is: one life, so live it to the fullest. During training for the Susan G. Komen race/walk, I contemplated: hmmm. If I can run 3.5 miles, this means I can do double that. If I can run 7 miles, then I might as well train for a half marathon! Many of us feel “I can never do that.” Believe me, if I can, YOU sure can! It all begins with proper training. My lovely friend Heather and her husband have shared excellent tips and research with me and I realize that my training needed more structure. In less time, I am running Football farther, smarter and am less tired! It never hurts time to ask for help! Chalin Texas! lenge yourself and do
something new, too! In this month’s newsletter, be sure to read some super cool articles and reports about healthy side options to eat alongside your grilling favorites this Labor Day weekend, plus fuel your workout foods! Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.
HONORING SEPT. 11 TH Twelve years have passed since the one day that changed our beloved America forever. We will never forget Sept. 11, 2001. There are many ways we can honor the innocent lives lost on this day. Begin by saying a prayer for their souls and continue to pray for the families affected. Volunteer and give to charity and do so without conditions. Plant a tree or flowers and say a prayer. Do something special for our first response teams. Last but not least, be thankful for your many blessings and gifts.
TEACHING KIDDOS THE MEANING OF LABOR DAY How can we teach our kiddos the meaning of Labor Day? Read on: The history of Labor Day: Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. This holiday is dedicated to appreciating the contributions of the working class and how they help build our country’s strength and prosperity. Labor Day has been a national holiday since 1894 and is considered the unofficial end to summertime, families often host barbecues, go camping, have picnics or attend parades. Take your child to work: Take your children to work with you. Allow them to meet the people at your workplace who can talk to them about their jobs. This is a great way to expose kids to various types of work. Talk to them how each specific job is important and how each person contributes to the company and society.

Let your child work: No matter how young, you can teach kids about labor through action. Kids can chores at home - from dishes to yard work. They can babysit, deliver newspapers, care for pets or help neighbors with chores. Discuss how certain kinds of work can help other kids - becoming a tutor to younger children, teaching computer skills, volunteering at kids’ clubs or helping out at children’s centers. HEALTHY SIDES WITH YOUR LABOR DAY BBQ! Millions of Americans are going to be grilling their favorites this Labor Day long holiday. But what about some healthy side options? Oh yes! When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

STOP THAT BARKING! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you!

• Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electricshock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a midday visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.
GRAND LAKES DOG PARK Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

SIX TIPS FOR MANAGING AN INHERITANCE
A sizeable inheritance can represent a life-changing opportunity. Here are six tips to help you prudently manage your windfall.
Avoid landscape pitfalls... We bring our special knowledge and 17 years of experience to you so that your job is done right the first time.
Tip 1: Consult With a Financial Professional and Tax Professional. Depending on the type of inheritance (e.g., investments, life insurance, retirement account), you could be dealing with substantial federal and/or state inheritance taxes. Working with a financial advisor and/or a tax professional could help you plan the sale of any assets and deal with the tax implications. Examples include: (1) If your inheritance was from your spouse, there may be no taxes due. (2) Life insurance proceeds are usually tax free. (3) Non-retirement assets are taxed when sold and those assets typically receive a “step up” in cost basis. That means that any capital gains tax you owe will be based on the asset’s fair market value at the date of death of the benefactor. If you inherit an annuity or traditional workplace retirement account or IRA, you will have to pay taxes on the distributions. Be very careful when taking your distributions. For example, if you cash out your uncle’s IRA and roll the money over into your own IRA, the entire amount of the rollover will be subject to ordinary income taxes. Note too that there are considerations for spouses rolling over their deceased spouse’s retirement account. Tip 2: Park the Cash. Before you make any plans or major purchases, stop. Deposit the inheritance or investments in a bank or brokerage account. If you are married, you need to determine whether to put the account solely in your name or jointly with your spouse. Note that inheritances are considered separate property, in case of divorce. However, once they are commingled in a joint account, those assets lose that protection. Tip 3: Cut Down/Eliminate Your Debt. Your inheritance may allow you the ability to pay off your debt, including your mortgage. But first consider paying off those loans with higher interest rates, such as credit cards, personal loans and car loans. Then consider paying off your mortgage. Also fund an emergency account with at least six months’ worth of living expenses. Tip 4: Think About Your Other Goals. Identifying your financial goals can help you determine what types of investments to make or other types of accounts to open. These goals could include: Contributing to charity; setting up a trust or foundation; paying for a family member’s education; helping out loved ones and adding to your retirement savings Tip 5: Review Your Insurance and Estate Planning Needs. If you’ve inherited a significant sum, it may be wise to increase the liability limits on your homeowners and automotive policies. If you inherited jewelry, artwork or real estate, you may need to increase your property and casualty coverage. Consider an umbrella policy. Does the inheritance inflate the size of your estate so that it will be subject to estate

Tip 6: Do Something Nice for Yourself. Set aside a small percentage - no more than 5% to 10% - of your inheritance for “splurges.” Take a trip. Buy a new car. Just be sure to keep it small. After all, inheritances don’t grow on trees.
PARKS, TOWN SQUARE AND COMMON AREAS IN THE COMMUNITY In the community of Grand Lakes, there are several common areas for the residents to enjoy. These common areas are restricted to residents for individual and family use and for community events. It is important that we do not abuse these areas with events other than the activities mentioned.

BRITTANEE GROCE NAMED KATY ELKS LODGE VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER The Katy Elks have long been known for their annual youth scholarship awards to local students; however, there is one award about which little may be known in our community. This is our State Vocational Grant program. This year, Brittanee Groce, a graduate of Morton Ranch HS received a $2,000 grant/scholarship to aid in her studies at HCC Downtown Campus in their VAST (Vocational Advancement Social Skills Training) Academy. “VAST Academy provides post-secondary transition programs and comprehensive support services which lead to meaningful credentials, employment and independence for differently-abled individuals.” As a child, Brittanee couldn’t talk and was taught sign language. Today, she not only has great mastery of the English language, she has spent a lot of time helping by reading to younger children. She still enjoys reading to others, but as with most teenagers today, her favorite pastime is texting. As a student at Morton Ranch HS, she was a “Best Buddy” to an autistic girl.

The scholarship funds presented by the Elks each year emphasize their motto: Elks Care - Elks Share. Nationally, the Elks are second only to the Federal Government in providing students with scholarship and grant funds. For anyone interested in pursuing any of the Texas Elks Scholarships for 2014, go to texaselks.org after September 15th when all current information should be posted. For further assistance, call the Katy Elks Lodge - 281-391-2763.

EF FOUNDATION FOR FOREIGN STUDY HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENTS Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization has

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
