GREEN TRAILS’ ANNUAL FOURTH OF JULY PARADE AND POOL PARTY WAS A BIG HIT ONCE AGAIN

A hundred of our friends and neighbors walked, biked and rode from Crescent Green park to the Gerri Ayers pool and were cheered on by folks along the route. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed watermelon, popsicles, play time in the pool and our legendary hula hoop contest. A special thanks goes to our volunteers: Jim and Summer Austin and Mariah Salim. Steve, Laurie, Scott and Abigail Sawyer get a special shout out for planting the flags along the parade route. The day would not have been the same without all of your help. Green Trails would also like to thank the West I-10 Fire Department and the Harris Country Constables for leading the parade and making sure the day was both fun and safe.

ADULT CO-ED VOLLEYBALL TEAMS FORMING

Teams are currently being formed in Green Trails for its second season of adult co-ed volleyball. The fall league begins September 22nd and ends October 27, 2013. The matches will be played on Sundays, in the late afternoon, on the grass court located in Desert Ivy Park. Forty-four residents played last Spring and we hope to have more this season. Teams are expected to be formed by September 15th and should be comprised of an equal number of men and women over 25 years of age. All normal volleyball rules will apply except that no two men can hit the ball consecutively on the same side of the court. The purpose of the league is to provide a fun Sunday afternoon activity with family and neighbors. This is NOT a serious competitive league and all levels of talent are accepted.

Registration closes on September 14th (or sooner if the number of teams reaches six). To register for a team or if you have any questions, please email Peter Olyniec at polyniec@sbcglobal.net.

GREEN TRAILS TENNIS

ACCESS CARDS New residents needing tennis/pool access cards can contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761. Access cards are for residents only. Card access is the only way to insure our courts are only being used and cared for by our residents and their guests, please do not open the gates for anyone not having a card. Do not loan out your card. COURT RESERVATIONS To reserve court time, the sign-up bulletin board is located inside the tennis courts. Residents may sign up no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the sign up sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes.) This is to allow maximum court usage for all residents during prime times (mornings and evenings). Should you sign up prior to 48 hours in advance or for longer than 1 1/2 hours, your name will be subject to removal by a committee member. (Of course, you can walk on and play as long as you like if the courts are not previously reserved or in demand.) TENNIS LESSONS/COACHING Please book tennis lessons by signing up for a court 48 hrs. in advance during non-prime hours. (No evening or morning lessons, please.) If you or your child can only take lessons during prime time, please sign up for the single court at Park Cypress to prevent injury and frustration to our neighbors playing a match. It the lesson is to be a regularly set day and time, please contact the tennis committee for approval and court time can be blocked off for you at the Park Cypress Court.

If you have spots in your yard that are yellowing or dying, be sure you are treating the right problem. Chinch bugs, Brown Patch and Take-all Root Rot fungus are all possible causes. Chinch bugs can be a problem when the weather is hot and dry. Keep lawns properly watered. Excess nitrogen fertilizer makes the lawn more susceptible to chinch bugs. A few chinch bugs are normal, but large brown areas, especially near pavement, need attention. To check for cinch bugs, cut a plug of half-dead, half-alive grass and submerge in water. Chinch bugs (black bodies, white wings) will float. Even if bugs are present, keeping the area well-watered may keep the grass from turning brown. You can apply a solution purchased from a lawn/garden store to help control them.

Brown patch thrives in warm, humid environments, especially as nights get cooler. It can cause patches of your lawn to turn brown, wilt and dry up. If you pull on a clump, the blades will break off, leaving the runners. Turf affected by Brown Patch will grow back, usually from the middle of the area out leaving a round ring just before it rebounds completely. Brown Patch often appears in turf, which is high in nitrogen and overfertilized. Large amounts of grass clippings left on the yard may also encourage fungus. Wet soil also encourages fungus. If you irrigate, do so late at night, just before and at daybreak - not in the evening or just after dark. Be sure your yard drains and does not hold standing water. Consult your garden center or the internet for fungicide suggestions. Two or three treatments may be needed during a growing season. One suggested organic treatment for brown patch: Mix one TBSP baking soda, one TBSP corn oil and one gallon water. Spray a light mist of the solution to your lawn. In order for fungicides and fertilizers to work, you will need to test the PH of your soil. Lawns need to have a PH, which measures 6.5 - 7.0. You can use a PH test kit or a PH soil probe.

Take-all Root Rot Fungus attacks both St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns stressed by too much or too little water. If you pull on a clump of brown grass, it will lift easily - roots and all. It can appear in hot weather, unlike Brown Patch fungus, which usually appears when nights are cooler. For more info. on identification and treatment, go to www.plantanswers.com/root_rot_fungus. htm. Part of this information is from www.bugspray.com/article/fungus.

PRE-MOVE CLEAN OUT

WATERING TIPS Conserve water; water only when needed. Your goal should be 1 to 1 1/2 inches per week. Less frequent, deeper watering encourages deeper root growth and helps your yard endure dry spells. . Adjust your irrigation so that it does not spray paved areas or run off over curbs. Consider running two shorter cycles to allow water to soak in. Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day; you will lose more water to evaporation. For more tips, see http:// aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/newsletters/hortupdate/2011/apr/water.html or www.ktrh.com/pages/gardenline-watering.html.

HOW DO WE LOOK?

Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug.

• Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

Children living in households with incomes at or below the federally approved levels, based on household size, may be eligible for free or reduced price school meals. Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide documentation of their eligibility status. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. The online application can be found at the district website at www.katyisd.org. A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter was also distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they were eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. A new application is required each school year. The Nutrition and Food Service Department is located at 5364 Franz Rd, Katy, TX 77493. Staff is available Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 2:30 PM to assist parents in completing the application. Bring the names of all members of the household and their Gross Monthly Income. Applications may be submitted any time during the school year starting in August 2013. The information households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining meal eligibility. Application information may be verified by school officials at any time during the school year.

In May, Girl Scouts Anusri Shah, Rebecca Clark and Veronica Miko earned the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn, the Silver award. The trio of 7th graders accrued more than 60 hours supporting Katy’s Krause Center with various projects and events. They organized and led an Art Workshop for younger Girl Scouts, culminating in a large canvas to be displayed at the Krause Center. Using their creative energies, the Cadettes designed inspirational posters and assembled fleece pillows for the residents there. They also hosted a flip-flop decorating workshop at the Krause Center with more than 40 residents. Each of these girls is continuing on with Girl Scouting and plans to earn the highest honor, the Gold Award.

Want to help create a world with more birthdays and less cancer? The American Cancer Society is looking for passionate, committed volunteers to be a part of the 2014 Relay For Life of Katy planning committee! Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community support and underwriting, coordinate the cancer survivor dinner, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment activities, engage students at local schools and more. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track or park, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups and people from all walks of life - all aimed at celebrating the lives of those who have had cancer, remembering those lost and fighting back against the disease. If you would like to join the Relay For Life of Katy as a volunteer committee member, please plan to attend our informational meeting on Monday, September 23, 2013, at 6:30 PM, at the Cinco Ranch Library located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd. in Katy. If you are not able to attend, please express your interest to Erin Kasperek at the American Cancer Society by emailing her at erin.kasperek@cancer.org or calling 713-706-5652. MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped

Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization has matched over 100,000 enthusiastic students from around the world with caring host families across the United States. EF Foundation is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Program Sponsor.

SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the

Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.

STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.
