Nottingham Happenings DON’T DRIVE LIKE A FOOL We continually hear horror stories about how fast people drive on our subdivision streets - and it’s not always teen-agers. An adult driver was recently observed backing out of a driveway so fast he/she almost hit the school bus. Another day, this driver drove DANGEROUSLY close to children at the bus stop at a high rate of speed. I am told the reaction of the mothers of those children isn’t suitable for a family newsletter but suffice it to say, you wouldn’t want to incur their wrath. I’m bringing this up now because school will be back in session about the time this newsletter is delivered When driving, please be watchful of children walking to buses and their schools. SLOW DOWN! In related news, our MUD and the Green Trails subdivision have agreed to split the cost of adding a sidewalk on the south side of Kingsland between Fry Road and Houghton. Previously children walking to Nottingham Elementary and Taylor HS from the Green Trails side of Fry Road had to walk in the street or on lawns. This sideway will enable them to now have full sidewalks all the way from Fry Road to Taylor HS on the south side of Kingsland. The sidewalk should be completed about now or very shortly. This is an excellent area improvement and we thank our MUD and Green Trails for embarking on this endeavor. Football time in Texas!

BEST WISHES TO SGT. SIMON RAMIREZ For those of you who do not visit our website, it is with mixed feelings that we inform you that Sgt. Simon Ramirez, who was our lead constable, has been promoted within the ranks of the Precinct 5 Constables office and will no longer be our lead deputy. Sgt. Ramirez has done a tremendous job during the short time he has been associated with NC. We certainly wish him well and know he deserves the promotion. At the same time, we are pleased to announce that Sgt. Jeffrey Gragg has taken the place of Sgt. Ramirez. Sgt. Gragg has a long history in law enforcement and we believe he will do an excellent job although he certainly has “large shoes” to fill. Welcome Sgt. Gragg! We have been very fortunate of late in that the four constables who patrol our subdivision have really become part of the community and communicate effectively with the Board and homeowners. NC has a very low crime rate and a great deal of credit has to be given to our law enforcement personnel. At the same time, let me add that we homeowners can assist law enforcement by keeping a vigilant watch on what is taking place in the community and communicate with them accordingly. FIREWORKS MESS The 4th of July passed this year without any major issues. The Board would like to thank the NC homeowner who reported that Rennie Park was littered with used and unused fireworks the day after. This thoughtful homeowner took her own time to clean up the mess. We thank you! To those irresponsible folks who made the mess and then walked away, you won’t be doing it again next year, as we will prohibit any fireworks in Rennie Park. Your irresponsible ac-

tions now causes inconvenience for the rest of us. People are usually also negligent in cleaning up along the bayou after shooting off fireworks. Be advised that if this continues, we will have to forbid fireworks there as well. Be a good neighbor. We know fireworks are legal in NC but have some common sense next year and clean up your mess when you are finished. TOO MANY TRAILERS... Soooooooooo I know I sometimes sound like a broken record, but there seems to be an explosion in the birth of trailers! Once again, we are sending way too many letters to homeowners advising them to move their trailers off their driveways and the streets. Trailers offer great fun, but they should NOT be a permanent part of our neighborhood. If you a have a five wheel, four wheel, three wheel, two wheels or no wheel trailer, it CANNOT be parked in NC for more than a day or two. Find an offsite storage facility, please. CABLE ISSUE IN SECTIONS 1-3 If you live in Sections 1, 2 and 3, you may have noticed thin black cables that have been laid across the alleyways and even on some residents’ driveways. These are AT& T cables. After a kind homeowner informed us of this matter, we contacted AT&T and were told that the old existing telephone cables that go beneath the alleyways have deteriorated over time. With the advent of new products and services offered by AT&T, they find and they must replace the lines. We have a unique situation in those sections whereby there are no aerial lines and the cables have to be buried under the alleyways. AT&T upgraded the cabling, but then contracted with another vendor to go back and bury the cables. Of course this takes time. We have asked AT&T to take whatever steps are necessary to get the cable lines buried as soon as possible, because allowing them to lie out in the open is not an alternative. If you are a homeowner that has a line on your property or near your alleyway, you can assist us in this matter by constantly contacting AT&T and asking them to get this matter completed. Please call 713-826-4603 and ask for Mr. Do, as he is the field manager on this project.

HOW TO ADDRESS THE BOARD DIRECTLY

The monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are held on the second Thursday, at 6:30 PM at the Mason Creek Community Center Houghton Room. The facility is located at the corner of Houghton and Kingsland. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. However, due to time constraints, we cannot allow audience members to speak at the meeting unless they contact us ahead of time and get put on the agenda. As much as I dislike telling that to someone who has taken the time out of his or her schedule to come to the meeting with a concern, I must respect the time of the volunteers on the Board as well. To get on the agenda, simply call SCS Management Services, Inc. at 281-463-1777, ext. 7132. Of course, you may also feel free to put your concerns in writing to any other Board member or me, via email (our addresses are on the website at nottinghamcountry.org). During its regular July meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the conceptual design for the proposed second stadium. The stadium project is one of three projects being considered for the District’s Student Activities Facilities referendum this fall. Members of the community, as well as Katy ISD end users and support staff attended a two-day design workshop held on June 26th - 27th and developed the conceptual design presented at the July 15th Board Work Study meeting. The second stadium would support student growth and success with additional athletic and fine arts support facilities at the secondary level within the District. PBK Architects were deemed best qualified for the stadium project, having successfully completed numerous stadium projects across the state, including multiple projects at the Rhodes stadium complex. Two other architectural firms have been selected for the STEM Center and Agricultural Sciences Center that are also components of the Student Activities Facility Proposal. For more information on the proposed second stadium, visit the Katy ISD website.

2013 - 2014 CRITERIA FOR FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS Katy Independent School District announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals for children eligible under the federal income guidelines for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. A copy of the policy may be viewed at www.squaremeals.com.

Nottingham Country September 2013

Children living in households with incomes at or below the federally approved levels, based on household size, may be eligible for free or reduced price school meals. Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide documentation of their eligibility status. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. The online application can be found at the district website at www.katyisd.org. A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter was also distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they were eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. A new application is required each school year. The Nutrition and Food Service Department is located at 5364 Franz Rd, Katy, TX 77493. Staff is available Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 2:30 PM to assist parents in completing the application. Bring the names of all members of the household and their Gross Monthly Income. For any questions, call the Katy ISD Nutrition Department office at 281-396-6240. Applications are available online, at any district school and at the food service office. Applications may be submitted any

time during the school year starting in August 2013. The information households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining meal eligibility. Application information may be verified by school officials at any time during the school year.

The trio of 7th graders accrued more than 60 hours supporting Katy’s Krause Center with various projects and events. They organized and led an Art Workshop for younger Girl Scouts, culminating in a large canvas to be displayed at the Krause Center. Using their creative energies, the Cadettes designed inspirational posters and assembled fleece pillows for the residents there. They also hosted a flip-flop decorating workshop at the Krause Center with more than 40 residents. Each of these girls is continuing on with Girl Scouting and plans to earn the highest honor, the Gold Award.

families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization hasmatched over 100,000 enthusiastic students from around the world with caring host families across the United States. EF Foundation is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Program Sponsor.
