HAPPY LABOR DAY! HONORING SEPT. 11 TH Twelve years have passed since the one day that changed our beloved America forever. We will never forget Sept. 11, 2001. There are many ways we can honor the innocent lives lost on this day. Begin by saying a prayer for their souls and continue to pray for the families affected. Volunteer and give to charity and do so without conditions. Plant a tree or flowers and say a prayer. Do something special for our first response teams. Last but not least, be thankful for your many blessings and gifts.

TEACHING KIDDOS THE MEANING OF LABOR DAY How can we teach our kiddos the meaning of Labor Day? Read on: The history of Labor Day: Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. This holiday is dedicated to appreciating the contributions of the working class and how they help build our country’s strength and prosperity. Labor Day has been a national holiday since 1894 and is considered the unofficial end to summertime, families often host barbecues, go camping, have picnics or attend parades.

Football time in Texas!

Take your child to work: Take your children to work with you. Allow them to meet the people at your workplace who can talk to them about their jobs. This is a great way to expose kids to various types of work. Talk to them how each specific job is important and how each person contributes to the company and society.

Let your child work: No matter how young, you can teach kids about labor through action. Kids can chores at home - from dishes to yard work. They can babysit, deliver newspapers, care for pets or help neighbors with chores. Discuss how certain kinds of work can help other kids - becoming a tutor to younger children, teaching computer skills, volunteering at kids’ clubs or helping out at children’s centers. HEALTHY SIDES WITH YOUR LABOR DAY BBQ! Millions of Americans are going to be grilling their favorites this Labor Day - long holiday. But what about some healthy side options? Oh yes! There are many other great things to eat while others enjoy their meat: • Tropical fruit salads - chop mangoes, strawberries, kiwi fruit, apples, pineapple, blueberries and toss with chopped walnuts. Serve super chilled and cool! • Ants on a log - a kid favorite. Spread peanut butter on celery sticks and top with raisins! • Easy Indian bruschetta - slice fresh French bread, lightly toast, spread cholesterol free butter, add chopped tomatoes mixed with chopped cilantro, salt & pepper, then top with provolone cheese, broil for 10 minutes. • Black bean salad - pan toss fresh corn, chopped red bell pepper, red onion with salt & pepper, no oil. Wash one can of black beans and toss with ingredients, fresh chopped cilantro, squeeze lime juice and enjoy!

WATER BILL INCREASE Many have been noticing an increase in their water bills. A visit to the monthly Fort Bend MUD 50 meeting (see their new website for more info: www.fortbendmud50.com) revealed that the increase is due to the Subsidence District’s groundwater reduction mandate, which has necessitated the expense of converting to surface water usage. For more information on this, go to the North Fort Bend Water Authority website at: www.nfbwa.com -From Helaine Fuss Clendennen

FREE WATER IRRIGATION SYSTEM EVALUATION Any homeowner in MUD 50 can get a FREE evaluation of their irrigation/sprinkler system. There’s a program being offered by your water supplier and the North Fort Bend Water Authority! You are invited to sign up today for the FREE evaluation by a licensed irrigator… The W.I.S.E Guys. There is no obligation on a homeowner’s part to purchase anything. You have nothing to lose, but you could learn a lot. You will be provided with a comprehensive evaluation of your system - checking the water patterns of your sprinklers and frequency settings of the controller. You will have access to the results on-line to help you learn how to use water more efficiently on yard and landscaped areas. That’s it…no pressure… you decide how to use the information. Why waste any more water… or money? Make an appointment now! Look for the details on-line at: www.nfbwa.com/wiseguys

If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of theleaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring.

Parkway Lakes September 2013

• St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appearsto stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applicationscan slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’digestivesystems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day.The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

EF FOUNDATION FOR FOREIGN STUDY HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENTS Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their

BRITTANEE GROCE NAMED KATY ELKS LODGE VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER The Katy Elks have long been known for their annual youth scholarship awards to local students; however, there is one award about which little may be known in our community. This is our State Vocational Grant program. This year, Brittanee Groce, a graduate of Morton Ranch HS received a $2,000 grant/scholarship to aid in her studies at HCC Downtown Campus in their VAST (Vocational Advancement Social Skills Training) Academy. “VAST Academy provides post-secondary transition programs and comprehensive support services which lead to meaningful credentials, employment and independence for differently-abled individuals.” As a child, Brittanee couldn’t talk and was taught sign language. Today, she not only has great mastery of the English language, she has spent a lot of time helping by reading to younger children. She still enjoys reading to others, but as with most teenagers today, her favorite pastime is texting. As a student at Morton Ranch HS, she was a “Best Buddy” to an autistic girl.

The scholarship funds presented by the Elks each year emphasize their motto: Elks Care - Elks Share. Nationally, the Elks are second only to the Federal Government in providing students with scholarship and grant funds. For anyone interested in pursuing any of the Texas Elks Scholarships for 2014, go to texaselks.org after September 15th when all current information should be posted. For further assistance, call the Katy Elks Lodge - 281-391-2763.

WILDLIFE

THE MEXICAN FREE-TAILED BAT

THE STATE FLYING MAMMAL OF TEXAS BY CHERYL CONLEY, VICE PRESIDENT, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER*

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when I say “bats?” Do you think of Halloween? Do you fear they will land in your hair? Do you think all bats have rabies?

Dr. Amy Vogt

Caring For Pets and the People Who Care for Them

Bats are not blind and they don’t intentionally land on your head. Less than 1% ever contract rabies and there’s approximately only one death per year in the USA from bat rabies. The largest colonies in the country are right here in Texas. They form colonies of millions. At dusk the bats leave their roosts in search of prey. Each bat eats 1/3 of its own weight in insects each night and it’s especially nice that they eat mosquitoes! Bats play key roles in keeping insect populations in balance. Reaching speeds of up to 50 miles per hour, they use echolocation (sound waves) to detect and catch insects. Pups are born naked and each female only produces one. About seventy percent of all pups are born during a 10-day period in June. The pups nurse for 5 to 6 weeks. They are furred and capable of flight and self-feeding at about 5 weeks. The adult Mexican free-tailed bat has short reddish, brown, gray or black velvety fur. The underside of the bat is slightly lighter. It has a wrinkled upper lip, rounded ears, large feet and a protruding tail. It’s small, only getting between 3.5 and 4.5 inches long. The wingspan is about 12 inches and they weigh about 1/2 ounce.

Most Mexican free-tailed bats migrate to Mexico in October and November and return to Texas in late February. *TWRC Wildlife Center is a 33-year-old non-profit organization that rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife with the goal of returning healthy animals back to the wild. Through educational outreach programs and camps for children, we promote awareness of the vital role of wildlife in our community. We have two locations, one at 10801 Hammerly Blvd. in Houston and one at 1118 Pruitt Road in The Woodlands. Last year nearly 6,000 animals were admitted to our centers needing our help. BOARD APPROVES CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR PROPOSED SECOND STADIUM During its regular July meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the conceptual design for the proposed second stadium. The stadium project is one of three projects being considered for the District’s Student Activities Facilities referendum this fall. Members of the community, as well as Katy ISD end users and support staff attended a two-day design workshop held on June 26th - 27th and developed the conceptual design presented at the July 15th Board Work Study meeting. The second stadium would support student growth and success with additional athletic and fine arts support facilities at the secondary level within the District. PBK Architects were deemed best qualified for the stadium project, having successfully completed numerous stadium projects across the state, including multiple projects at the Rhodes stadium complex. Two other architectural firms have been selected for the STEM Center and Agricultural Sciences Center that are also components of the Student Activities Facility Proposal. For more information on the proposed second stadium, visit the Katy ISD website.
