FoundationsAcademy.com HONORING SEPT. 11 TH Twelve years have passed since the one day that changed our beloved America forever. We will never forget Sept. 11, 2001. There are many ways we can honor the innocent lives lost on this day. Begin by saying a prayer for their souls and continue to pray for the families affected. Volunteer and give to charity and do so without conditions. Plant a tree or flowers and say a prayer. Do something special for our first response teams. Last but not least, be thankful for your many blessings and gifts.

TEACHING KIDDOS THE MEANING OF LABOR DAY How can we teach our kiddos the meaning of Labor Day? Read on: The history of Labor Day: Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. This holiday is dedicated to appreciating the contributions of the working class and how they help build our country’s strength and prosperity. As a child, Brittanee couldn’t talk and was taught sign language. Today, she not only has great mastery of the English language, she has spent a lot of time helping by reading to younger children. She still enjoys reading to others, but as with most teenagers today, her favorite pastime is texting. As a student at Morton Ranch HS, she was a “Best Buddy” to an autistic girl. The scholarship funds presented by the Elks each year emphasize their motto: Elks Care - Elks Share. Nationally, the Elks are second only to the Federal Government in providing students with scholarship and grant funds. KATY GIRL SCOUTS FROM TROOP 17259 EARN SILVER AWARD

The trio of 7th graders accrued more than 60 hours supporting Katy’s Krause Center with various projects and events. They organized and led an Art Workshop for younger Girl Scouts, culminating in a large canvas to be displayed at the Krause Center. Using their creative energies, the Cadettes designed inspirational posters and assembled fleece pillows for the residents there. They also hosted a flip-flop decorating workshop at the Krause Center with more than 40 residents. Each of these girls is continuing on with Girl Scouting and plans to earn the highest honor, the Gold Award.

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt.

• When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

BOARD APPROVES CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR PROPOSED SECOND STADIUM During its regular July meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the conceptual design for the proposed second stadium. The stadium project is one of three projects being considered for the District’s Student Activities Facilities referendum this fall. Members of the community, as well as Katy ISD end users and support staff attended a two-day design workshop held on June 26th - 27th and developed the conceptual design presented at the July 15th Board Work Study meeting. The second stadium would support student growth and success with additional athletic and fine arts support facilities at the secondary level within the Dis-

trict. PBK Architects were deemed best qualified for the stadium project, having successfully completed numerous stadium projects across the state, including multiple projects at the Rhodes stadium complex. Two other architectural firms have been selected for the STEM Center and Agricultural Sciences Center that are also components of the Student Activities Facility Proposal.

Kendler holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and physical education from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in education administration from the University of New Mexico. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied

economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization hasmatched over 100,000 enthusiastic students from around the world with caring host families across the United States. EF Foundation is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Program Sponsor.
