NATIONAL NIGHT OUT PLANNED FOR OCTOBER 1, 2013

The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” in 1984 began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. NATW’s National Night Out program culminates annually on the first Tuesday of October in Texas. Join us for a fun filled event in the cul-de-sac behind the pool with food, music, prizes and more! BACK TO SCHOOL TIME! TIPS AND INFORMATION FOR BACK TO SCHOOL:

• School zones! School zones! School zones! • Traffic is suddenly going to get heavier - be patient. • The fine for passing a stopped school bus while it’s flashers are on is $999. • Watch out for children riding bicycles, walking and crossing streets (they are small and quick so keep a sharp eye out).

• Beginning September 1st, it is a citable offense to use a cell phone in a school zone (unless it is an emergency) unless you are stopped or using a hands free device. • Talk to your children remind them if they see or hear of anyone joking, planning or committing violent acts on school property, to tell a teacher or campus police right away. • Write and record the serial numbers of your child’s cell phone, there are numerous lost cell phone reports made during the school year, the serial number will aid in possible recovery. • Talk to your children about strangers and to never leave with anyone they don’t know. Have a safe and wonderful school year !!!!

CRIME TIPS - PUT YOURSELF IN A BURGLAR’S SHOES

One thing every homeowner should do at least twice a year is take a walk around and through your property with a close friend or neighbor who is not too familiar with your house. Start outside and ask yourself “how would I best break in?” The purpose of not doing it alone is your pal may spot things you’ll overlook. Return the favor and complete a survey for your friend. Besides the obvious “lived-in” look, don’t get into a habit of only doing certain things only when you’re not home. Chances are good you can tell when your neighbor isn’t home. Remember it’s a burglar’s job to know the same things. Most professional criminals can tell nobody’s home at least four or five houses away.

Several dead giveaways are always closing the drapes ONLY when you’re not home. Having no garbage cans out collection day or an empty can sitting at the curb, are tip-offs you’re not home. So are closing up the house as tight as a drum in the hot summer months without the air-conditioner running. Turning on a certain light or two and every other room is in total darkness. Ditto for picking up all the kid’s toys, taking in the dog, shutting the garage door if you frequently leave it open and turning off the lawn sprinkler.

If you use an answering machine never leave a message that you’re not home. Instead say you can’t come to the phone right now. EFFECTIVE BURGLAR DETERRENTS

You’ve probably heard it several times and it’s true! A dog is one of the best deterrents. Not because it’s vicious, it need not even be seen, but it has to be heard. A dog with a menacing bark will scare away a lot of would-be burglars, not only because they don’t know what kind of dog you have and what risk it would be to them if try tried to break in, but more likely because a noisy dog will create a disturbance and get attention - the last thing a burglar wants! If you don’t have a dog there’s nothing stopping you from pretending. A Beware of Dog sign on your fence, a doghouse in the back yard, even a loose dog chain or bowl can drive away a potential burglar. Don’t be fooled by companies that provide cheap electronic “dogs” who bark none stop if a intruder trips a relay or otherwise signals his presence. Most experienced prowlers are familiar with these devices and won’t be fooled or scared off. Electronic devices that are effective besides the typical whole house alarm systems for windows and doors are infrared or motion detectors that sense movement or the heat given off by one’s body. Anyone approaching too close will trigger any number of attached devices. The most effective are powerful lights or burglar horns that either flood the area with light or fill the air with a deafening sound without notice. Just like a barking dog, the would-be burglar will usually hightail it out of there for fear of being discovered. To be effective, the sensitivity of such devices much not be set too high or stray animals will set them off too frequently, which will get you on the wrong side of your neighbors. Also be sure such devices are high enough that they can’t be easily turned off or broken.

So each month, we will provide information on the most noted rule violations from the prior month to help provide an extra reminder of our responsibilities as homeowners and good neighbors. STREET PARKING: Not only is continually parking in the street a violation of the rules, it causes a nuisance to your neighbors and safe access for traffic. Please utilize your driveway and garage to park your vehicles consistently. We understand you will have guests visit your home, but please also make an effort to use as much of your driveway as possible and remind your guests to be courteous to your neighbors when parking. PET ETIQUETTE: We understand your pets are very important to you and we want to be a pet friendly community. INGREDIENTS: 1 (18 ounce) package small chocolate chip cookies (or Oreo cookies) 1/4 cup margarine, melted 1 cup hot fudge topping 2 quarts vanilla ice cream 1 cup whipped cream 12 cherries 1 additional cup of fudge topping (optional) Candy – crushed - such as Reese’s, Twix or use M&M’s (optional)

Meanwhile, soften 1 quart of ice cream in microwave or on countertop. After crust has chilled, spread softened ice cream over fudge layer. Freeze 30 minutes.

DIRECTIONS: Crush half the cookies (about 20) to make crumbs. Combine crumbs with melted margarine and press into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan or pie plate. Stand remaining cookies around edge of pan. Spread 3/4 cup fudge topping over crust. (Microwave the fudge for a few seconds to make spreading easier.) Freeze 15 minutes.

Instructions Pour the watermelon juice into a shallow glass baking dish. Add the sugar and lemon juice and stir well. Place the dish in the freezer and chill. Remove the pan every 1/2 hour and stir. The juice will form light, grainy ice crystals as it freezes. Repeat this process until the juice is fully frozen, about 4 hours, depending on the temperature of your freezer. You can also use an ice cream maker, following the manufacturer’s directions.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

In order to win, Chandwani had to receive an endorsement from her home Key Club District at District Convention (DCON) in Dallas in April. After her endorsement at DCON, she submitted her intent to run at the international level of Key Club before officially campaigning at ICON this month. Finally, she made it past the regional caucuses before being elected on Saturday, July 6th. As an International Trustee, Chandwani will become a figurehead of Key Club International and represent the Kentucky-Tennessee, Pacific Northwest and Eastern Canada Districts on the international level. “When I walked into Mrs. Kiklas’ room at Cy-Falls three years ago for my first Key Club meeting, I never imagined I would get this far in such a wonderful organization. Being elected as an International Trustee is honestly a dream come true for me,” says Chandwani. “I have to pinch myself every day because it doesn’t seem real.”

The Northwest Flyers Track Club Youth Cross-Country Team kicks off the fall season with registration and an orientation for parents and athletes on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 6:00 PM (location to be announced). The first practice will be held at the Cypress Creek YMCA on Thursday, September 12, 2013. The Northwest Flyers Track Club is a member program of USA Track and Field (USATF), the national governing body for track and cross country. The larger group is planned to connect with existing interest groups and Council day and twilight camps and to identify and establish relationships with other programs. We know this is especially important to provide opportunities for our girls.

Leaders from all around Copper Creek Meadows got a chance to meet each other at an event on August 18th. Copper Creek Meadows includes the former Bear Creek, Bluebonnet Meadows and Copper Corners service units, so we cover a wide area up and down Hwy 6. We are all looking forward to the new year of Girl Scouting and it was a great chance to get acquainted and make some plans for the 2013-2014 year! To quote from the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website, “Girl Scout programs are adapted to meet the developmental, educational, emotional and social needs of girls at five age levels.” Girls may become Girl Scouts at any age level and no previous Scouting experience is required.

Girl Scouting in the United States began in 1912 and it is continually changing and evolving, while remaining true to its core values, the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girl Scouts are active girls! Girl Scouts in San Jacinto Council have opportunities for many outdoor activities (sailing, horseback riding, canoeing, archery and more) at our beautiful camps. We also explore nature in our own backyards and neighborhoods, work on service projects and learn new skills.

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities. The National Marrow Donor Program received the support of Eagle scout candidate Lucas Bargar in a recent bone marrow registry drive, located at Langham Creek YMCA. Organizing the training of Troop 1296 adults and scouts, Lucas co-ordinated with bone marrow registry “Be the Match” to advertise the program and sign up potential donors during this local registry drive. His hard work and enthusiasm paid off, with almost one hundred potential donors being identified during the course of the project, each having the potential to save a life!

PACK 1102 - PET FOOD COLLECTION

Grant Pifer from Troop 1102 has set a goal to collect 8,500 pounds of dry Dog and Cat food to benefit the AniMeals on Wheels for his Eagle Scout Project. This program compliments the Seniors Meals on Wheel program supported by Interfaith Ministries. The collection date is Saturday, September 7th from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Hunters Park Community Center in the Bear Creek Subdivision. If you would like to donate or miss the collection date, pickup can be arranged by texting 713-858-3001.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 1296 EARNS SCOUTING’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS CONSERVATION AWARD:

Troop 1296 Eagle scout candidate Andrew Zarker, planned the conservation project, in association with Kleb Wood Nature Center director Mr. Fred Collins. As part of his Eagle project, he led the effort to organise the Troop participation in the removal of the invasive tree species Chinese Tallow from an ephemeral wetland. This is a valued marsh habitat that would be lost without intervention. The clearance of the tallow trees involved the majority of the Troop membership, scouts and family members, who removed the unwanted trees prior to Spring migration and nesting time for the marsh inhabitants. This large scale conservation effort earned the Troop the Hornaday Unit Award. The BSA National Council describes the Hornaday Award as being “equivalent to an Olympic medal bestowed by the earth” and the awards program emphasis is designed to incorporate an awareness and understanding of conservation. Andrew designed a sign, which is to be erected near the marsh, to educate Nature Center visitors about the marsh habitat and the invasive species removal.

LOWERY ELEMENTARY CUB SCOUT PACK 1445

Cub Scout Pack 1445 is chartered by the Lowery PTO and has monthly Pack meetings at Lowery Elementary. Scouting is a great opportunity for boys to learn new skills and valuable lessons while spending time doing fun activities with their friends and family. The summer started off as an action-packed and adventurous time for the organization. At our Bridging Ceremony on June 2nd, we promoted Tiger Cubs to Wolves, Wolves to Bears and Bears to Webelos and wrapped up an extremely successful year for Pack 1445. Next, we had 12 Scouts attend the District Day Camp, earning numerous achievements towards their new rank and learning a variety of skills. The Scouts had a great time with activities like Archery and BB gun shooting, soccer and Ultimate Frisbee and working on craftsman activities including building a TV tray table. On the 4th of July, several of our Scouts participated in the Southdown parade and one of our leaders acted as the flag bearer. The boys had a terrific time! We have many exciting events and outings planned for the upcoming year. If you are interested in joining Pack 1445, our Fall Rally Night will be September 10th in the Lowery Cafeteria at 7:00 PM. THE LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND

The Lone Star Symphonic Band to launched its 21st Season in August. The group recently recorded a Christmas themed CD, which will be available for purchase at all concerts this season. The Band is based in west Houston, with rehearsals and concerts held at CrossPoint Community Church off of Westgreen Blvd. and I-10 (The Katy Freeway). All concerts begin at 4:00 PM and feature the Lone Star Dixieland Band for 30 minutes prior to the main performance in the foyer. On October 13, 2013, the Band will perform a concert titled “Life in Living Color.” All selections performed will feature life’s many colors. December 15, 2013 will be the Lone Star Symphonic Band’s Christmas and Hanukkah themed concert, titled “Celebrate the Season.” On March 2, 2014, the Band will perform “Lone Star,” a concert as big as Texas! The Lone Star Symphonic Band will perform on May 4, 2014, a spring-filled concert titled “Spring into Fun!” The annual patriotic concert, titled “We Hold These Truths,” will be held on June 29, 2014. The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.
