GARAGE SALE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2013 The last garage sale of 2013 will be on Saturday, October 5th. You can post signs at 6:00 AM Saturday morning, but they must be removed by 6:00 PM that day. Our HOA guidelines allow for three garage sales on preset dates. If personal signs are not removed, a fine will be assessed. The first Saturdays in March, June and October are reserved for these neighborhood sales. The Board arranges for ads in the Houston Chronicle and the Greensheet and signs are posted at the entrances of the sub division early that week.

YARD OF THE MONTH
Yard of the Month judging began in May. There are over 1,600 homes in Concord Bridge. It’s an overwhelming task to select the best yards without repeatedly choosing the same homes. We extend our thanks to Pam Sommers and Ronnie Buegeler for their time and efforts in choosing the winning homes this year. The August addresses are 5706 Henniker, 5746 Malcomboro, 5935 Bryant Pond and 13626 Klamath Falls. Pictures will appear in this issue of the Crier.

WE LOVE DOGS, YES WE DO... We love our community and so should you! Besides being a nuisance, unleashed dogs and uncollected dog waste is a serious problem for our Association. Next time you’re tempted to let your dog roam free or leave your dog’s droppings on the lawn, please remember these facts: 1. The Environmental Protection Agency is becoming aggressive about enforcing the Clean Water Act. Our Association could be fined if dog waste goes uncollected. 2. Unleashed dogs are more likely to defecate in neighbor’s yards. Uncollected dog waste may lead to a special assessment. If fined by the EPA, the Association could face a potential special assessment that would be levied against all members - not just dog owners. 3. The appearance and quality of the common areas are known to a f f e c t home sales - not just for how much they sell, but how quickly. 4. The more residents complain about dog waste, the more time the manager

must spend on enforcement rather than serving the Association. 5. Uncollected dog waste spreads disease and attracts rodents who feed on pet waste. We love dogs - we really do. We also love our community! That is why the Association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years! Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you. We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.
HARRIS COUNTY ALARM PERMIT
A permit is required for all alarms in Harris County. Obtaining the required permit will avoid the issuance of a citation and excessive false alarm fees. The permit application can be downloaded from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office website at www.hcso.hctx.net and click on forms. The application should be completed and mailed with the appropriate fees to the address shown on the application. A new permit will cost $35 and annual renewals are $10. Should you have any questions, please contact the Alarm Detail office at 713-755-4600 during normal business hours.
State Farm, Home Office, Bloomington, IL
DEED RESTRICTIONS
Deed restrictions are in place to maintain continuity within the neighborhood. Without these standards, a home could be left in disrepair or abandoned and could become a plight to our neighborhood. At entrances to the neighborhood, there are signs declaring deed restrictions are strictly enforced and when you purchased the home you were given a copy of the deed restrictions. Please remember, this is a legal document in place to protect the value of your home. Crest Management handles most of the business transactions for Concord Bridge under the direction of your Board of Directors. If you don’t understand any correspondence from Crest Management, please call for clarification. The homeowners association pays for all correspondence related to deed restrictions; therefore, duplicate letters cost you and me additional fees. Do not ignore correspondence from Crest Management!
CONCORD BRIDGE PET HOTLINE The pet hotline at www.concordbridgepethotline.com is no longer in service. You can still contact them at 281-4689414 and on the new Facebook account, Concord Bridge Pet Hotline. You can use this source to report lost and found animals. This has been a great help in returning lost and found animals to their owners. If you don’t have access to Facebook, you can call 281-468-9414. Please note, Harris County requires that all pets be on a leash or confined within your yard.

VACATION WATCH
Vacations occur year round and the Precinct 5 Constables offer a very valuable service. If you complete a Vacation Watch form they will drive by and check your home while you are away. This form is available on the Precinct 5 Constable’s website, www.co.harris.tx.us/pct5 on the Concord Bridge website, www.concordbridgeonline.com and in this publication. You can also ask for a copy from one of the officers. Information on how to mail or fax it is on the form. It’s also a good idea to let a trusted neighbor know that you will be gone so they can report unusual activity at your home during your absence.
A NON-WORKING STREET LIGHT?

Please have as much information as possible, the location of the light, approximate address or closest intersection, and if possible, the number on the pole. The only way for a light to be repaired is for us to report it. You can report it by phone at 713-207-2222 or at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.

2745 Gessner Rd. Ste.C GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant.

HONORING SEPT. 11 TH Twelve years have passed since the one day that changed our beloved America forever. We will never forget Sept. 11, 2001. There are many ways we can honor the innocent lives lost on this day. Begin by saying a prayer for their souls and continue to pray for the families affected. Volunteer and give to charity and do so without conditions. Plant a tree or flowers and say a prayer. Do something special for our first response teams. Last but not least, be thankful for your many blessings and gifts.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season.

‘BEGINNING WITH BEETHOVEN’ TAKES HOLD OF HOUSTON
‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX

Call 1-855-351-GOLD

The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February. To find out more, visit Houston New Arts Movement online at www.artsmove.net.
HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK
During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.
Concord Bridge September 2013
There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 20132014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
EXCHANGE STUDENTS FROM AMERICAN COUNCILS
The U.S. Department of State sponsors exchange programs that bring high school students from over 50 countries from all over the world in the United State for an academic year to live with an American host family, attend high school and learn about American society. American Councils is always looking for interested and excited host families to host one of their students. For more information, visit http://inbound.americancouncils.org or email inbound@americancouncils.org. You can also contact Assia Baburi by email: assia.baburi@hccs.edu or by phone at 713-856-5020.
EF FOUNDATION FOR FOREIGN STUDY HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited

GIRL SCOUTS COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
Leaders from all around Copper Creek Meadows got a chance to meet each other at an event on August 18th. Copper Creek Meadows includes the former Bear Creek, Bluebonnet Meadows and Copper Corners service units, so we cover a wide area up and down Hwy 6. We are all looking forward to the new year of Girl Scouting and it was a great chance to get acquainted and make some plans for the 2013-2014 year! To quote from the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website, “Girl Scout programs are adapted to meet the developmental, educational, emotional and social needs of girls at five age levels.” Girls may become Girl Scouts at any age level and no previous Scouting experience is required. • • • • • •

Girl Scouting in the United States began in 1912 and it is continually changing and evolving, while remaining true to its core values, the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girl Scouts are active girls! Girl Scouts in San Jacinto Council have opportunities for many outdoor activities (sailing, horseback riding, canoeing, archery and more) at our beautiful camps. We also explore nature in our own backyards and neighborhoods, work on service projects and learn new skills. Girl Scouts also share in the traditions of the worldwide Scouting movement. Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following schools: Lieder, Metcalf, Tipps, Wilson and Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Owens, Kirk, Hairgrove, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. And that isn’t all, we also serve the corresponding middle and high schools! Home school and private school students are always welcome! Rally Days (when we recruit new leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled soon, so be on the lookout for more information! Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls. Wider Opportunities, Council trips and

BOY SCOUT TROOP 1296 EARNS SCOUTING’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS CONSERVATION AWARD:
Troop 1296 Eagle scout candidate Andrew Zarker, planned the conservation project, in association with Kleb Wood Nature Center director Mr. Fred Collins. As part of his Eagle project, he led the effort to organise the Troop participation in the removal of the invasive tree species Chinese Tallow from an ephemeral wetland. This is a valued marsh habitat that would be lost without intervention. The clearance of the tallow trees involved the majority of the Troop membership, scouts and family members, who removed the unwanted trees prior to Spring migration and nesting time for the marsh inhabitants. This large scale conservation effort earned the Troop the Hornaday Unit Award. The BSA National Council describes the Hornaday Award as being “equivalent to an Olympic medal bestowed by the earth” and the awards program emphasis is designed to incorporate an awareness and understanding of conservation. Andrew designed a sign, which is to be erected near the marsh, to educate Nature Center visitors about the marsh habitat and the invasive species removal.

BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY
Want to be happier and live a less stress-filled life? A Barna survey showed that people who participate in faith-based communities are more optimistic, less stressed and believe they are making a positive difference in the world. Yet, the number of Americans who identify as “unchurch” or “dechurched” has steadily increased over the past decade. With this in mind, September 15th has been designated as “National Back to Church Sunday.”
God and Family - Grades 4th - 5th: This program is designed to help youth understand the importance of family and God’s role in a healthy family. Young people and their families will explore their faith together.
Cornerstone United Methodist Church would like to extend a special invitation to come celebrate with them “Back to Church Sunday” on September 15th. The church is located at 18081 West Rd (across from the CFISD Berry Center). Special worship celebrations to “welcome back” those who once were active in a church, as well as those who have never been to a church have been planned for 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM and 10:45 AM.
These programs are officially recognized by the Boys Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA, Girls Scouts USA and American Heritage Girls as the religious awards program for youth. Awards

GET IN S.H.A.P.E. AT CORNERSTONE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Have you ever wondered “What on earth am I here for? Sure I race the carpool all around town or I sit in on more conference calls in a week that I ever thought possible - but is this really all there is for me? Is this the extent of my impact?” On Tuesday, August 27th, Trish Woodruff, the new Associate Pastor at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, began a six-week series with the acronym, S.H.A.P.E. It stands for your personal blend of Spiritual Gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality and Experiences. You’ll learn how to apply these attributes in ways that bring confidence, freedom, clarity and significance that can only come from our Creator. No previous experience or knowledge needed! Just come at 7 PM each Tuesday for an hour and a half and be part of the journey. (You can join in at any point after the beginning date.) Don’t wait any longer to unlock and unleash the power of your God-designed S.H.A.P.E. For more information or to sign up, please call the church office at 281-859-4141 or email Trish at associate@cornerstoneumc.org. Free childcare is available with advance notice. Do you feel overwhelmed? Intimidated? Insufficient? Inexperienced? Too old? Too young? Too invisible? or Too afraid? Join us as we discover God’s sufficiency in our lives. Join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM for this 7-week video study by Pricilla Shirer. Sessions will begin Tuesday, Sept. 3 - Oct. 15, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Aug 6th - 27th. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($13) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.
LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH
Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 - Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.
