HAPPY LABOR DAY! TEACHING KIDDOS THE MEANING OF LABOR DAY How can we teach our kiddos the meaning of Labor Day? Read on: The history of Labor Day: Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. This holiday is dedicated to appreciating the contributions of the working class and how they help build our country’s strength and prosperity. Labor Day has been a national holiday since 1894 and is considered the unofficial end to summertime, families often host barbecues, go camping, have picnics or attend parades. Take your child to work: Take your children to work with you. Allow them to meet the people at your workplace who can talk to them about their jobs. This is a great way to expose kids to various types of work. Talk to them how each specific job is important and how each person contributes to the company and society. Let your child work: No matter how young, you can teach kids about labor through action. Kids can chores at home - from dishes to yard work. They can babysit, deliver newspapers, care for pets or help neighbors with chores. Discuss how certain kinds of work can help other kids - becoming a tutor to younger children, teaching computer skills, volunteering at kids’ clubs or helping out at children’s centers. HEALTHY SIDES WITH YOUR LABOR DAY BBQ! Millions of Americans are going to be grilling their favorites this Labor Day - long holiday. But what about some healthy side options? Oh yes! There are many other great things to eat while others enjoy their meat: • Tropical fruit salads - chop mangoes, strawberries, kiwi fruit, apples, pineapple, blueberries and toss with chopped walnuts. Serve super chilled and cool! • Ants on a log - a kid favorite. Spread peanut butter on celery sticks and top with raisins! • Easy Indian bruschetta - slice fresh French bread, lightly toast, spread cholesterol free butter, add chopped toma -toes mixed with chopped cilantro, salt & pepper, then top with provolone cheese, broil for 10 minutes. • Black bean salad - pan toss fresh corn, chopped red bell pepper, red onion with salt & pepper, no oil. Wash one can of black beans and toss with ingredients, fresh chopped cilantro, squeeze lime juice and enjoy!
HONORING SEPT. 11 TH Twelve years have passed since the one day that changed our beloved America forever. We will never forget Sept. 11, 2001. There are many ways we can honor the innocent lives lost on this day. Begin by saying a prayer for their souls and continue to pray for the families affected. Volunteer and give to charity and do so without conditions. Plant a tree or flowers and say a prayer. Do something special for our first response teams. Last but not least, be thankful for your many blessings and gifts.
GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.

• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of theleaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appearsto stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applicationscan slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’digestivesystems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day.The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH SEPTEMBER 15TH - OCTOBER 15TH
Each year, from September 15th to October 15th, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the economic, cultural and social contributions of the more than 44.3 million Latinos residing in the U.S. The dates of Hispanic Heritage Month were selected to include the Independence Day celebrations of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile and to incorporate October 12th, Día de la Raza, a holiday celebrated throughout Latin America to observe the colonization, exploration and multicultural heritage of the Americas. How to celebrate: • Visit a museum or gallery that has a Hispanic Heritage Month-related exhibit. You might learn about Hispanic artists, musicians or scientists who contributed to Hispanic culture around the world. • Go to your neighborhood bookstore or library to hear a lecture about Hispanic history. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about any one of the 21 countries represented by Hispanic society. • Attend a Hispanic dance performance or a Latin music concert. Take in the rhythm of the music or watch dancers move to the Latin beat. Or take dance lessons yourself, such as a salsa-dancing lesson. Ask ahead to find out whether or not you will need a partner for the class. • Watch a film in Spanish (with or without subtitles), see a play or musical related to a Hispanic tradition or see a performance put on by Hispanic Americans. If you don’t speak Spanish, learning a few words could open up a whole new world to you. • Volunteer for a Hispanic-related club such as a Mexican cooking club, Spanish literature group or Puerto Rican singles club. Begin writing for a publication written in Spanish or teach ESL. Whatever you choose, get involved in your community as a way to celebrate Hispanic heritage.

EF FOUNDATION FOR FOREIGN STUDY HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who
10
embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization has matched over 100,000 enthusiastic students from around the world with caring host families across the United States. EF Foundation is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Program Sponsor. Learn more about high school exchange contact Tammala at tammala.baszile@effoundation.org.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL Leaders from all around Copper Creek Meadows got a chance to meet each other at an event on August 18th. Copper Creek Meadows includes the former Bear Creek, Bluebonnet Meadows and Copper Corners service units, so we cover a wide area up and down Hwy 6. We are all looking forward to the new year of Girl Scouting and it was a great chance to get acquainted and make some plans for the 2013-2014 year! To quote from the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website, “Girl Scout programs are adapted to meet the developmental, educational, emotional and social needs of girls at five age levels.” Girls may become Girl Scouts at any age level and no previous Scouting experience is required. • Girl Scout Daisies are in kindergarten and first grade (roughly ages 5-7). • Girl Scout Brownies are in grades 2nd-3rd (ages 7-9) • Girl Scout Juniors are in grades 4th-5th (ages 9-11) • Girl Scout Cadettes are in grades 6th-8th (ages 11-14) • Girl Scout Seniors are in grades 9th-10th (ages 14-16) • Girl Scout Ambassadors are in grades 11th-12th (ages 16-18) Girl Scouting in the United States began in 1912 and it is continually changing and evolving, while remaining true to its core values, the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girl Scouts are active girls! Girl Scouts in San Jacinto Council have opportunities for many outdoor activities (sailing, horseback riding, canoeing, archery and more) at our beautiful camps. We also explore nature in our own backyards and neighborhoods, work on service projects and learn new skills. Girl Scouts also share in the traditions of the worldwide Scouting movement. Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following schools: Lieder, Metcalf, Tipps, Wilson and Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Owens, Kirk, Hairgrove, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. And that isn’t all, we also serve the corresponding middle and high schools! Home school and private school students are always welcome! Rally Days (when we recruit new leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled soon, so be on the lookout for more information! Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls. Wider Opportunities, Council trips and special interest groups (backpacking, archery, Green Starlettes and more) are activities in which our Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors participate. There will be a special event for Cadettes and Seniors November 1st-3rd at Camp Casa Mare, “It’s Your Story, Tell It!” This will be a fun filled weekend exploring the Media and Mission Sisterhood Journeys. For more information or if you would like to be part of the Girl Planning Board for this event, please see the September/October issue of the Golden Link. You may also contact Liz Alton (LAlton@sjgs.org) or phone her at 712-292-0269. Girls in grades 6-12 who love learning about the stars, sun and moon are invited to join the Astronomy Interest Group, which meets at the Girl Scout Center (they also go camping!). Please contact Rosie Haffemann (rosiehaf@windstream.net) for more information. Copper Creek Meadows will also be part of Region 4, with Cypress Bend and Wild Flowers neighborhoods. The larger group is planned to connect with existing interest groups

16100 Cairnway, Suite 285 and Council day and twilight camps and to identify and establish relationships with other programs. We know this is especially important to provide opportunities for our girls. Think these sound like fun? Give us a call - we’d love to talk to you! The Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website is www.sjgs.com or contact Dianne Massie (Dianne.massie@att.net), 281-550-9148. We also need GIRL SCOUT ADULTS! These are women (and men!) aged 18 on up to serve as troop leaders and to help with special projects and activities. A background check and some training are required to get started; lots more training is available when you need it. You do not need to be Ranger Rick, Martha Stewart or Wonder Woman (though we would be happy to sign them up too!). Some of our volunteers don’t even have children! You do need to be interested in working with girls, helping them achieve their goals and having FUN!

This large scale conservation effort earned the Troop the Hornaday Unit Award. The BSA National Council describes the Hornaday Award as being “equivalent to an Olympic medal bestowed by the earth” and the awards program emphasis is designed to incorporate an awareness and understanding of conservation. Andrew designed a sign, which is to be erected near the marsh, to educate Nature Center visitors about the marsh habitat and the invasive species removal. If you are interested in joining Boy Scouts, please call Troop 1296 Committee Chair, Mr. David Covington, at 281-855-2239. Boy Scout Troop 1296 meets weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM during the school year. Meetings include activities, skill sessions and planning for our monthly camp outs. Come join the fun!

CORNERSTONE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
P.R.A.Y. Program of Religious Activities with Youth Cornerstone United Methodist church invites all young people entering grades 1st through 5th to join us for the P.R.A.Y program. These classes are FREE of charge and will be held every Sunday at 9:30 AM beginning September 1st and will continue through the end of December. God and Me - Grades 1st - 3rd: Youngsters in this group will learn of God’s love while cultivating a “best friends” relationship with Jesus. In each lesson, children will make a game that will be kept in a GAMEBox (God And Me Exploring BOX). These games will reinforce the Bible lessons and provide opportunities for families to explore God’s love together. God and Family - Grades 4th - 5th: This program is designed to help youth understand the importance of family and God’s role in a healthy family. Young people and their families will explore their faith together. These programs are officially recognized by the Boys Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA, Girls Scouts USA and American Heritage Girls as the religious awards program for youth. Awards will be given in February to Scouts and any other child who commits to and successfully completes the requirements of this program. Since regular attendance is mandatory, make-up dates have been included in the schedule in case of absence. If you have any questions and/or would like to sign your child up for this four-month program, please contact Erica Knight at family@cornerstoneumc.org. ALL children are welcome to attend these classes as a regular stand-alone Sunday School class. If you would like additional information about the P.R.A.Y. program, please visit their website at www.praypub.org.
