MESSAGE FROM YOUR HOA PRESIDENT

Greetings Cypress Mill Residents, School will be back in session. Please use care in the mornings, as the kids are making their way to bus stops. I would also like to remind you that it is illegal to use a cell phone in a school zone. It is easy to forget, but the police will not. If you have not heard, the Cypress Mill HOA and Cypress Hill MUD are working with TXDoT to get a 14 foot tall sound barrier put up behind Cypress Mill Estates, as they are expanding Hwy 290. This will be a drawn out process, but we will try to keep you informed. There have been a few incidents of people having things stolen out of their garages when they have left the doors open. We also continue to see cars burglarized when left unlocked. Please be diligent to close your garage doors and keep your vehicles and home doors locked. Also, do not leave anything in your vehicle that a thief might want. This does not stop all crime, because they may try to get in anyway, but it is at least a deterrent. Unfortunately, gone are the days that we can leave our doors unlocked with no fear of thieves. I am not saying that it is the fault of the victim because they left something unsecure, but it would make it more difficult for the thieves to commit crimes if we are more vigilant. Maybe they will eventually move on to easier targets. This brings us to the National Day Out on October 1st. We should all get out and meet our neighbors. There was a time in America where everyone on the block knew everyone else. It helped us to keep on the lookout for anything suspicious going on. For example, we got a call from a neighbor who wanted to know if we were home because there was a strange car in our driveway. We were and it was my son’s girlfriend, but we appreciated the call. But another example is when a moving truck was

pulled up at a neighbor’s house and no one knew it was actually thieves. Had her neighbors known her better, they would have known that she wasn’t moving and could have called the police. Finally, we are still having issues with trash cans being stored where they can be seen from the street. They should be stored out of sight. Out of sight does not mean in your driveway, outside your fence or behind the columns by your garage. We will be sending out letters for these deed restrictions. Take care and God Bless, Dennis R Brewer President, Cypress Mill HOA

LAWN CARE TIPS

If you decide to water your lawn, do so in the morning and only run the sprinkler(s) once or twice a week and give the lawn about 1 inch of water per week. Pay attention to local water restrictions. Mow at the highest setting recommended for your lawn. Doing so will help shade the grass from the hot sun and it will encourage deep root growth as well. Keep those mower blades sharp and balanced. Grass is typically under a lot of stress during the hot summer months, so only mow when necessary.

Become a Dental Assistant in just 10 weeks! 10 Week Course Saturday Classes Only Fall Classes Begin 10/5/13 Tuition $2950 • Payment Plans Training Since 1995

Think about what fall brings, besides football. You get cooler temperatures. More dew and rain. And plenty of sunshine. The soil is still warm enough to germinate seeds, but the cool air invites grass to grow a strong root system. That’s why fall is the best time for seeding and feeding your lawn. It will look great in the spring and will be better able to resist weeds and summer stresses.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW PROCESS

Read the Design Guidelines The Design Guidelines, as well as other legally binding documents, are provided to homeowners prior to closing on a house. Please read the guidelines and application requirements carefully before submitting your application. Submit an Application Submit your application, along with any other required documentation to the management company. Please allow the allotted time period for your application to be reviewed. Incomplete information only delays your project.

Note - the ARB enforces community guidelines but it is up to you to make sure you meet local permit requirements. GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves.

The Green Room Book Release Party at The Fish Gallery hosted by author Melissa M. Williams Be the first to get the second book in the Turtle Town Series and celebrate with us at Snap Shell’s Luau Party! Everyone who comes by will have the chance to win all kinds of prizes! Bookmarks, Tattoos, Leis, Grass Skirts, Surf T-Shirts, Refreshments, Real Turtles and BOOKS will all be there!

- Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

As much as we love our pets and consider them part of the family, please be respectful of your neighbors and remember the following: • If your yard backs onto a retention pond, please do not throw feces (or other trash) over the fence. Often this lands on the walking path which is both an eyesore for walkers and hazardous, especially for small children. • Do not leave your dog(s) outside for extended periods if consistent barking is likely to annoy your neighbors. If this is not corrected, you may get a visit from your local deputy. • Please restrain your dog from pounding against your neighbor’s fence. There have been several instances where dogs have broken through the fence into a neighbor’s yard. If your dog does break a picket, then replace it as soon as possible. • Limit the number of pets to the number as directed in your section bylaws. • Always carry a poop bag when walking your dog.
